No doubt there is an art and science to staffing this property in NC mountains. We really have no idea hoe to recruit a staff in NC mountains Outstanding: Dinner salad, fresh baked bread, service and tonight Pirate's Pasta - linguine, marina, shrimp, scallops, clams, and mussels. Kakoura does not skimp on the shrimp and other seafood. My darling wife would greatly enjoy this pasta dish. Leah, our accomplished server is a great ambassador for Pirates Landing, and we suggest that Kakoura offer tastings to servers in order for them to offer recommendations. Pirate's Landing is a faux pirate ship, and is large with several dining areas. Suggest hostess stay on task and not stray. Pirate's Landing is a great venue for kids and their parents. We appreciate the large on-site parking lots. Menu features a variety of seafood at very interesting prices. Initially, I was thinking three stars, and as evening came together awarded five stars. Pirates Landing is walking distance from our hotel, Marriott Fairfield Inn, but most diners will be happier to take the one mile drive. Thanks Theo; We'll be back. read more

We've eaten here fairly frequently throughout the years, and some times it's fantastic and other times it's not. We ate there last Saturday and arrived 5:30. We were seated and our drink ordered were taken fairly quickly. We ordered a kids meal and app with our drinks, and were ready to order entrees when our drinks arrived. The FOH service was prompt. However it took a substantial amount of time for any food to arrive. I ordered a chicken salad and baked potato, and crab dip for the table. The kiddo had chicken tenders and fries. I explained to both server & MANAGER, that I was expecting a cream sauce and ordered that dish as I don't eat tomatoes. I WAS TOLD THAT THE COOK WILL NOT SUBSTITUTE WITH ALFREDO & THAT WAS THE ONLY WAY HE WOULD PREPARE THE DISH! WHAT??? WOW! SO I RETURNED THE DISH & DID NOT ORDER ANYTHING! this is the place for seafood. When I went to my table and looked around every platter looked delicious. My husband and I ate off of the senior menu. I had the catfish dinner. I was surprised I had two fillets of catfish. It must have come straight from the pan because it was hot and I had to let it cool for a minute to eat it. it was delicious. It came with coleslaw and a loaded baked potato. I wasn't thrilled with the coleslaw or the baked potato, but it tasted all right. My husband had the popcorn front shrimp and he said it was excellent. He also got a baked potato and coleslaw which he said he liked both. The place was very clean and nicely decorated like a pirate ship. It was a Sunday afternoon so it wasn't very crowded. Our waiter was nice but a little too talkative. He talked to the couple in the table next to us what seemed like forever and we wondered when we were going to get fresh drinks and the hush puppies he promised. BLAND food, disinterested staff. We had seen Pirate's Landing several times while passing by. It looked like a fun place to have a nice seafood dinner. Unfortunately looks can be very deceiving. It was a slow night with relatively few customers, so there was no excuse for bad service. The entire staff showed no sign of being friendly or even interested in doing their jobs. The greeter never smiled or talked to us, but Just led us to our seats and walked away. Ditto to our server. We ordered a salad with our dinner. It was nicely prepared and appeared to be fresh. That is where any sense of quality ended. We ordered an appetizer sampler and an entree. Our appetizer and entree were brought to our table at the same time. The appetizer was okay, not terribly fresh but very heavily fried! I ordered broiled scallops as my entree. They were rubbery and completely without any seasoning. No sear at all. I suspect they were microwaved not broiled. Same for the vegetables, bland, soggy and almost inedible. My wife ordered a Mediterranean seafood pasta entree. There was nothing fresh about the seafood and the sauce was laced with garlic. Surprising since that was the only attempt at seasoning on any of the food. I had to ask for a refill of my iced tea which our server reluctantly delivered without ice. Again disgusting! We were presented with our bill and never asked if we wanted dessert or wanted to see a dessert menu. The bottom line is too bad. This is a neat place with a fun filled theme. The bad attitude of the staff and complete disregard for quality in the food they serve is a sure sign of bad management. Don't bother wasting your time at this place. We enjoy our trip every time we visit Pirates Landing. The spinach and artichoke dip is stellar as an appetizer, they bring out fresh hush puppies to the table. There are plenty of options that are not seafood to accommodate for family and friends who may not enjoy seafood specifically. My husband likes the calabash shrimp, my grandmother loves the salt and pepper cat fish, I love the chicken tenders. Stopped for dinner on way home from Florida to Ohio. We will not stop back again. Started out on a good note with fast seating and served hot delicious hush puppy fingers. Server took our beverage orders and brought them to us. Then things really slowed down. She kept saying she'd be there to take our order. I had a salad. It looked really fresh. That is except both my grape tomatoes had bad areas on them. I set them aside and didn't say anything. Figured it was just an oversight. Then I had the clam chowder. It said it was home made. Lots of potatoes, some celery and no clams that I could tell. Still never said anything, because that is how chowder sometimes odd and the flavor wasn't too bad. Waitress came by and refilled drinks, but never gave an update on our dinners. We waited a long time. When they finally came out my husband was missing his potato and the coleslaw wasn't fully chopped. His salmon was tasty, but not very warm. I had prime rib. The waitress went back to get my fixing for my sweet potato and the horseradish sauce for the prime rib. While she was gone I checked my steak. It was cold, overdone and extremely dry. She said she would take it back and get it corrected. She would also bring my sides. Meanwhile she had forgotten the horseradish sauce. It was about 10 minutes and she finally brought me my sides back and my husbands potatoes. By this time they were so cold. I could eat the potato, but not the vegetables. The cook told her he could make me another one, but it would come out the same way. I had the option of taking it that way or another steak. Or discounting the steak. Seeing husband was done eating I chose to have it discounted. I didn't feel like trying a second chance with the cook's attitude. I would not recommend this place. As of a few years ago they changed their Mahi. They buy it from another vendor. I've eaten Mahi all over the East Coast and it's the worst I ever had. Now for really good Mahi I go to Captain Toms in Kernersville. I haven't eaten Mahi at Pirates landing since my last visit in 2019. I now get the steak Diane which is phenomenal. read more

Saw this gem from the highway and had to drag my trusty and hungry road dog in with me to check Building and interior was super cool tons of nautical themed decor and pirate themed paintings. Ordered to go food was done very quickly and waitresses were super kind and friendly. Still waited 10 minutes before the hostess came and took our drink order. After Pat came over 10 minutes later to take our order the food did arrive to our table in a timely fashion. (I know I know, we should have left but we were traveling from PA to SC and still needed to drive 2 more hours to stop for the night and didn't want to drive around looking for a place to eat). Stopped on drive from FL to OH after driving around Elkin looking for non- fast food. Waited for 1 hour to get salad after asking for waitress twice. She claimed she had to chop lettuce. After asking for manager, Robert Lewis, a professional waiter based on his business card he gave us, yanked the waitress off our table and promised to make our order right. Our food arrived 5 minutes later. 1) Broiled Trio came scalding hot with jumbo shrimp, large sea scallops and crabcake which was excellent. 2 Senior dinners with flounder had warm fish . Steamed Vegs were cold, mashed potatoes were cold and 1 Yam was hot. After wasting over 2 hours for a Sunday lunch we do not recommend if you are traveling or in a hurry. Only one word to describe our experience....TERRIBLE. We were seated and the waitress was at the table wanting to take our order. We barely had time to open the menu. We then ordered a Jim beam and coke and Seagrams and sprite, we expressed our order twice. She brought us to sodas with no alcohol, she initially made no mention of not having alcohol. When asked she said "oh we only have beer and wine." We both ordered salads. One with salmon and other blackened filet. We have never had a worse salad in our lives. Salmon tasted bad and was not fully cooked, the Filet was not even 3 oz had no blackened seasoning! We wanted to complain but our waitress, who starring us down to take our order, was nowhere to be found. She never came back once she brought our food. We finally flagged down another waiter, 30 minutes later, just to get our check to leave. She came back and we told her it was terrible. She did not care at all, said that she could get the manager but doubted the he would do anything. Took our money and said nothing else.
