Great tasting, cheap BBQ place. Hit on the way to VA from NC. The large BBQ sandwich was great, full of meat and coleslaw. I would have liked a little more BBQ sauce, but they have small to-go cups you can get. The chips were very unique and were a mix between a potato chip and a waffle fry. Crunchy outside but soft inside with a small spice. Would definitely recommend both

We stopped at John Boy's BBQ on a fall colors your through the local foothills. We stopped at noon hoping to get an omelette and hash browns. They had closed for breakfast but had their lunch grill open. Our group ordered hot dogs and French fries. They were both better than average. The hot dogs were red hots. Each topped with diced onions, chilli and a unique mustard. The French fries were crispy and piping hot. Thanks John Boys for a pleasant lunch. The only negative was that there was no outside seating options.

Our second stop in Elkin was ok, but not the home run we'd hoped for. We tried the Chili Dog and a Chopped BBQ Sandwich, and while neither was bad, neither was more than just ordinary. The chili was too much on the sweet side for our taste, and the quality of the wiener was not especially good, it was almost mushy in texture. The BBQ is more pulled than chopped, and it is heavily sauced - also with a little too much sweetness. Wouldn't reorder either, but saw some really nice looking fried seafood being served. Definitely would like to try some of that on our next visit to Elkin.

1 1/2 years later, and this place still has the shrimp plate for $4.49 on their "specials" board. My wife ordered the shrimp, and I got the hamburger steak, which came with a baked potato, slaw and 3 hush puppies for $4.49.......what an incredible deal.

    Barbeque,slaw,baked potatoe,and hush puppies.

Ya'll have got to come in and try the barbecue. They have a new smoker and we ate the barbecue today. It was so tender and so delicious. I'll have to say it was the best I have ever ate and I'm 70 years old. So that says a lot. They said they are smoking the ribs in there also.I already loved the ribs so I can't even imagine how good they will be now.Too bad today is Sunday and they are closed. Can't wait until late Monday evening. YUMMY

Sad! The food is awful! I should have known when I pulled in the parking lot and it was empty! The food was terrible and overpriced!

Good food, but they need to work on their A/C. So hot inside couldn't eat comfortably. Don't no how the staff can survive in that heat!!

Great prices and good food! I can feed my family of 5 for about $26 and we all be full when we leave. Pretty fast also!

Another good place to eat on the cheap side. It's a lot like Speedy Chef. Make sure you have cash on hand. They do not take debit cards.

When we were arrived we were the only folks there and we had our choice of seating. There isn't tons of seating inside, maybe room for 50 total. We took a seat in the smaller room on the left. The server came quickly to drop off menus and get drink orders. Maybe not completely necessary to mention, but their sweet tea here is good and not overly sweet. The menu is a little more diverse than you'd expect at a BBQ place. Lots of good options. We ordered buffalo chips with ranch to start. They arrived hot and crispy. These were probably my favorite part of the meal. I ordered a hot dog with the special side of the day (buttered corn) and was sharing a 1/4 rack of ribs and mac and cheese with friends. The server had to make sure they had ribs ready. They did. The food for the table came out and my hot dog and corn was dropped off. The ribs were "on their way." A group of 11 came in and the servers started to focus on them. The hot dog was good. A classic NC red dog that had a little crinkle/wrinkle to it which I like to see cause I know they are well-cooked. Toppings were ok. Seemed like they were stingy with the chili (see pic for evidence). The corn was bad - barely warm, watering, and lacked flavor. We had finished our meal and the ribs hadn't come out of the kitchen. We waited and waited. Eventually catching the server's attention. The kitchen hadn't seen the ribs on the ticket. They apologized, took it off the bill, and would get it to us quickly. The rib plate came out. I was going to ask for one of their signature sauces but the plate was dropped and the server headed away quickly. Ribs were great - well smoked and tasty. Definitely would have loved to try their sauces. The mac and cheese was mediocre. barely warm and you guessed it, lacked flavor. Some highs and lows from Wood Box but I'd probably go back and try some of their other items.
