This place is really gross- flies everywhere, and me and my family saw a cockroach on the floor running around which means that there has to be more somewhere. Girls at the front aren't very professional, took quite some time to be acknowledged because they kept laughing with each other. I was in Elkin and wanted to try a restaurant I haven't been to in the past. I found John Boy's on Yelp. It's located just west of Elkin. With GPS it isn't difficult to find. They have a wide menu selection. Since seafood is in the name, I ordered the baby flounder. It came with 3 small filets and 2 sides. I ordered the fries and slaw. I had the option of a hush puppy or role. I ordered the hush puppy but received a role...but that was fine. I enjoyed the flounder and would be interested in trying some of the other seafood and their barbecue as well. The wait for my meal was less than 5 minutes. The restaurant isn't fancy but appeared to be clean. It has a basic diner look. The person working the counter was helpful and kind. Pricing was reasonable. read more

Classic 1960's style burger chain building both inside and out. Front counter and cook area are classic. It is a walkup order system with friendly counter people. I am surprised in the name being about Barbecue it appears they have one Barbecue product, pork sandwich or plate. A better description would be a small town seafood and sandwich shop. We tried the Big Barbecue sandwich with fries. The sandwiches were ready in about 5 minutes. However it took 25 minutes to get the French Fries. Not sure why. They were not busy at all when we arrived. Since this is the only product that I have tried at this store then I cannot give a full review of their foods. However, i would say that if they are going to use Barbecue in their name, then perhaps they should explore a more diverse array of Barbecue products and add a variety of flavors. I can say as i was leaving that the place was starting to fill up with I assume were local patrons. So while I cannot recommend, I cannot say you would have the same experience. read more

Great tasting, cheap BBQ place. Hit on the way to VA from NC. The large BBQ sandwich was great, full of meat and coleslaw. I would have liked a little more BBQ sauce, but they have small to-go cups you can get. The chips were very unique and were a mix between a potato chip and a waffle fry. Crunchy outside but soft inside with a small spice. Would definitely recommend both read more

We stopped at John Boy's BBQ on a fall colors your through the local foothills. We stopped at noon hoping to get an omelette and hash browns. They had closed for breakfast but had their lunch grill open. Our group ordered hot dogs and French fries. They were both better than average. The hot dogs were red hots. Each topped with diced onions, chilli and a unique mustard. The French fries were crispy and piping hot. Thanks John Boys for a pleasant lunch. Our second stop in Elkin was ok, but not the home run we'd hoped for. We tried the Chili Dog and a Chopped BBQ Sandwich, and while neither was bad, neither was more than just ordinary. The chili was too much on the sweet side for our taste, and the quality of the wiener was not especially good, it was almost mushy in texture. The BBQ is more pulled than chopped, and it is heavily sauced - also with a little too much sweetness. Wouldn't reorder either, but saw some really nice looking fried seafood being served. Definitely would like to try some of that on our next visit to Elkin. read more

1 1/2 years later, and this place still has the shrimp plate for $4.49 on their "specials" board. My wife ordered the shrimp, and I got the hamburger steak, which came with a baked potato, slaw and 3 hush puppies for $4.49.......what an incredible deal. read more

Good food, but they need to work on their A/C. So hot inside couldn't eat comfortably. Don't no how the staff can survive in that heat!!

Ya'll have got to come in and try the barbecue. They have a new smoker and we ate the barbecue today. It was so tender and so delicious. I'll have to say it was the best I have ever ate and I'm 70 years old. So that says a lot. They said they are smoking the ribs in there also.I already loved the ribs so I can't even imagine how good they will be now.Too bad today is Sunday and they are closed. Great food, large portions and very good prices. Only rated 2 stars due to terrible customer service. Not once has there been any kind of friendliness. No smiles, no friendly chatter, and never a thank you come again. Generally a feeling of being unwelcome from all staff. To go orders are always missing plastic wear, dressing for salads, napkins etc. When dining in is available there's usually the same issue of missing requested Condiments or extras that were ordered. Stopped by Elkin during a long car trip for a spot to stretch our legs. After letting the kids play at a local park we were getting back on the road when we spotted John boys. Amazing fried seafood. Everyone was friendly and kind helping make suggestions. My husband ordered catfish off the special board. My daughter got the pork bbq. I ordered the popcorn shrimp. The seafood was hot and tender. I never order catfish but after trying one of the four pieces of catfish from my husband's plate they have made me a believer. All washed down with sweet tea and Cheerwine. This place use to be one of our favorites. It has never been spectacular, but the last 3 or 4 visits were just plain bad. Orders wrong, fries hardly cooked, greasy. The last time was the final straw, so to speak, my son's couldn't even eat his. His fries were basically just defrosted. Their prices are good, but I'd rather pay more for better quality food. Only reason I give them 2 stars is the girls at the front counter are always nice. read more

Good AND cheap food! Breakfast is my favorite meal. At supper time, when they serve seafood, you get a lot of food, and it's not expensive at all. I usually eat breakfast there, and the morning staff are very friendly, but very business minded too. I recommend that you try it out. read more

Another good place to eat on the cheap side. It's a lot like Speedy Chef. Make sure you have cash on hand. They do not take debit cards.
