Kazoku recently brought back their hibachi so we had to check it out. The options aren't as great, with only chicken, shrimp and steak. I'll forever miss the red snapper! Small spot- definitely recommend getting there right as they open to ensure quick seating. Tight spaces in between tables. Apps were fresh and the perfect amount to nibble on while waiting on our sushi to be prepared. We opted for the spicy sushi combo- three classic spicy rolls for 18 bucks! The sushi rolls were great. Can't complain about them, the chicken and shrimp combo was disappointing. Nothing special- just your basic combo, no flavor or seasoning whatsoever. Shrimp had a chlorine after taste as if it was soaking in chlorinated water. read more

Went here for supper tonight for our son's birthday, hands down the absolute worst service we have ever had. The sushi makers were rude and talking about customers while they were working. Our waitress disappeared leaving us with no drinks after she made us wait 20 minutes just to take our order while she was flirting with her boyfriend at the end of the bar. Our food plates came out while our sushi sat on the bar waiting to be brought to our table but our waitress never returned to do so leaving us to get up and ask for our sushi ourselves only to catch an attitude about it. Still did not get a refill on our drinks so we had to sit there with empty glasses hoping some ice would melt. Not one person in there acted like they wanted to be there to work, their attitudes as well as their service were absolutely horrible!!!! When we got up to ask for boxes the lady we went to was super nice and started asking where our waitress disappeared to, other employees started calling her and she was out across the street doing whatever she wanted focusing on her boyfriend instead of her customers. When she finally came in we had already paid, which we shouldn't have due to the quality of food and service, and boxed up our leftovers and all she could ask is if we needed a bag!! We needed our food brought to us, drinks refilled, and the other things we specifically asked for with out order, a bag was the least of our worries. We frequented this place quite often. It was our birthday go to, sushi fix and so much more. After tonight, we will not be going back. read more

We were wanting sushi for dinner so decided to check out this place after seeing pictures of their rolls. Their was bit of a wait for food but our server accommodated us which was nice. The rolls were worth the wait though. We had the kazoku, Downtown Mayberry, and Black Dragon roll. All were good but the Mayberry roll was the favorite. read more

This was one of our go to restaurants in Mt Airy. Our number one mysteriously closed suddenly (Old North State). And now they changed the menu here. They got rid of their hibachi grill. So no more hibachi chicken or beef. In fact there is no more chicken or beef anything. The sushi is good, the rolls are good. I have never had poke. So this place is now off our list and there is not much left in Mt Airy. There is no fine dining in Mt Airy. read more

Was super impressed with the sushi and food at Kazoku! The Thirsty Souls Roll and the Funky Roll were delicious. The fish tasted super fresh and the service was fabulous. Small space but cute layout. Clean and modern for a Japanese style restaurant. This must be a lunch hangout for the Downtown Mount Airy because it was packed. The hostess seemed bored to be there and she didn't give off a welcome feel. It appeared she was pained to seat us. But once seated, the waitress was friendly enough. She was preoccupied and a little stressed. She dropped and broke some cups and a costumer spilled a drink everywhere so I would be stressed also. The food was hot and fresh but didn't stand out from other small Japanese restaurants. Price point was average. The best part was the sushi. It was excellent which makes perfect sense because sushi is in the part of the restaurant name. Would I go back? Maybe. The highlights were the sushi and the atmosphere/decor. Kazoku is turning out to be a great addition to the Mt. Airy food scene, and I happily recommend it to anyone walking down main street or just wanting a lighter or fresher option. I've been here a handful of times now to dine in as well as order take out, and each time I've had a reasonably consistent experience. It isn't the only place in town that serves Sushi despite what some reviews have said, but it defiantly serves the best in town. The restaurant is divided into two sections, you enter into the main dining area where the sushi chef's station is set up so you can watch your roll being made and plenty of seating, and the upper dining area where the bar is and the tall bistro-style and window tables are set up. I always get seated in the upper dining area, the plus side is you get to enjoy seating with natural light, and the downside is your server may not know you're seated up there at first and you have to wait a few minutes longer than usual for service. Thankfully, the restaurant does have wifi, and is generally clean and inviting even when it's a slow day and the staff is just hanging out in the main dining room. I think it's important to note that I've never eaten here for one of their dinner rushes, and so there's rarely a large crowd of people when I'm there. I was pleasantly surprised with their menu, it's not overly crowded but still a lot of options, and I think the prices are extremely reasonable for the amount of food you get. It's also worth noting they have an entire section on the menu dedicated to vegetarian sushi rolls, so it's pretty vegetarian friendly as far as Japanese restaurants go, but if you decide you want to try the hibachi they don't offer tofu or a substitute protein option. As for the food, I've tried the Harumaki (spring rolls) and they're as good as anywhere else, the mixed vegetable hibachi, the cucumber roll, and the sweet potato roll. The hibachi is a pretty decent-sized plate of food that generally gets served with a white sauce, and I end up having to take half of home with me whenever I order it. It's not too heavy, but it's defiantly filling. For the cucumber roll, I was a bit confused because I'm used to a cucumber roll having avocado in it instead of the avocado roll being its own separate roll, and while it was enjoyable, I would recommend ordering it with the avocado for a little more flavor. The sweet potato roll, like a lot of their fried rolls, was massive, and it was falling apart because it took me two or three bites to get through a single piece. The flavor of the roll especially with the sweet chili sauce was fantastic, but it could have been rolled tighter and constructed better. I noticed a similar problem with the Happy Chicken roll my brother ordered, but I'm unsure if this is a common problem for all of their fried rolls or if the chef was just having an off day. As far as service goes, it isn't the best, but for Mt. Airy it's pretty good. Drinks and food have always come out in reasonable times, and even for three sushi rolls we only waited around 20 minutes for them to come out. When ordering take-out, the wait for two hibachi orders has never been more than fifteen minutes and my order has always been complete and correct which is rare for this town. The staff can be a little forgetful, but they're always friendly and take the time to answer questions and handle any mistakes quickly. Overall, tasty food, decent prices, and portions, and a really laid-back atmosphere. They also stay affordable by running discounts throughout the week; Tuesday is $1 off certain appetizers, Wednesdays is half off wine, and Thursday is $1 off single hibachi entrees and $2 off double. I'm excited to head back soon and try more of the menu, and hopefully update my review! read more

Never again. We ordered online and we're quoted a 30-35 minute pickup. I arrive 8 minutes prior to said pick up time. Told they are working on your order. No problem I'm early. No one behind the sushi counter, figured some of the rolls have cooked parts so must be in the back. Nope. 10m later staff appear behind the sushi station. Ok so must just be starting a little late. I can be patient. Fast forward 35 minutes. I'm STILL standing in a corner. No updates, no apology, nothing. I finally went back to the hostess station to make sure the order wasn't forgotten. My order was just being done. I'm told they ran out of rice. In. A. Sushi. Restaurant. I would have totally accepted that had I been told when I arrived. Surely you knew the order wasn't even close to ready. Perhaps let me know it will be SIGNIFICANTLY later until food complete. Offer me a seat, a beverage, an opportunity to cancel my order. There were plenty of persons sitting around who could have easily done any combination of the aforementioned. Poor customer service. Sadly pretipped online. Despite having frequented this restaurant every time we're in Mount Airy, we will never patron this establishment again. read more

Was greeted and our drink order taken, my partner's beer is brought out it's the wrong one, I'm patiently waiting for my drink, it finally arrived 20 minutes in, after a different server Stops to check on us, i had finished my appetizer and my food had arrived but my drink still was not there. Then when the server brings it they state that it will be taken off the bill but it was not. It wasn't because they were understaffed they had plenty of staff wondering around chatting with each other. Providing good customer service is not difficult, it really is not. read more

The food is phenomenal, the service is impeccable, and the ambience such that you won't want to leave. We have dined here numerous times and each time leave completely satisfied. They have an extensive sushi and sashimi menu as well as appetizers and standard hibachi dishes. We choose 2 rolls each and seaweed salad (which was superb), spring rolls and spicy pork dumplings as appetizers. They also have a very nice bar with beers, wine and cocktails. I order from here all the time whenever I do not want to cook dinner. There food is so delicious the sauces they give you are good as well usually get a dragon roll and sweet potato roll. Being from California I'm used to having tons of phenomenal sushi options close by, NOT the case in North Carolina, and it took me quite a while to find a spot that lived up to my expectations, which are pretty high as I've even had the pleasure of enjoying sushi in Japan! Now, it's not Japan good, but it is really great sushi and I highly recommend! Sushi restaurants are not meant to serve expedited food, if you want fast food stick to diners or a drive thru. This place has a great atmosphere and friendly servers and of course, great food. If the owner reads reviews I would recommend considering adding a true Japanese fried rice to the menu! Today we went there, food was good. Service wasn't so good, everything was fine until we payed. It was me and my friend, we split our checks and she left the tip for both of us. The server was Benson. After we payed he came up to us, telling me that I shouldn't eat here if I didn't pay i tip. Leave in mind i gave him the couple extra dollars that I had. I'm also a minor but that doesn't matter, he shouldn't have acted that way to anyone. He proceeds to say that we should eat takeout if we aren't going to pay a tip. The best hibachi style chicken and white sauce I've ever had. My husband says the sushi is really Good. I also tried and loved the guaca poke. Sooooo good. We've been here twice in two days lol. So glad to have such a delicious restaurant close to home and not have to travel for good Japanese food. UPDATE: I've been back to eat here twice in the past month and have been disappointed. My food has been served cold both times and they are using some sort of seasoning (I think it's pepper) that really takes over the whole dish, leaving a weird taste. I will ask for no pepper next time I eat here. Hopefully they find their footing again, because I was really impressed with this place the first few times. read more

The Renfro sushi roll is absolutely amazing! I have only had food to go from Kazoku but it has been spot on every single time. The food is AMAZING, the staff is not. On one occasion I order mahi mahi while my two friends order sushi, I understand that cooked food takes longer than sushi, but about 30min later my food arrived (my friends were done eating) and they explained that my first mahi hadn't been cooked correctly so they had to redo it. On another occasion, my friend and I were told to sit wherever we wanted in an empty restaurant and didn't get drinks or menus after waiting 30mins. We were delightfully surprised at this gem of a restaurant. Last night we ordered hibachi plates (red snapper and a filet) with the two sauces (teriyaki and a white sauce). Red snapper (with fried rice) was enormous, filet (steamed rice) was perfect. The young man next to us ordered sushi and did wait quite a long time for his handmade rolls-which he pronounced "outstanding and worth the wait". This was the only downside, but then again, handmade perfection takes time. Our bartender was helpful with explanations of entrees, and a master at mixology. Walked in early with no reservation and were lucky to sit at bar. By the time we left, at least 8 people were in line to enter. We plan on revisiting this week, but we'll make a reservation!! Really good food...buuuut very poor service. The first time our experience was positive, but the second and third not so much. The second time we waited a full 45 minutes for sushi, which is all we got. Also, If you're not dining in with a large party, they will treat you like a ghost. Third time going there I called in an order to go, said that it'd be ready in 20 minutes. Got there in 20 minutes, the entree was ready but not the sushi. We had to wait another 20 minutes for our sushi which took 5 minutes to make. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, and say the Sushi chef is really lazy. read more
