He was great from the start--he gave me really good advice about waiting until the end of the flight (she was of course a bit distracted from the view once I asked her!). We spent over an hour in the air and went up to 3000 ft. Darrek had great control over the balloon--he touched down briefly on some water and steered us like a pro (I believe he has 15+ years experience). One thing I would note is that I did research some balloon companies that were slightly cheaper. A lot of the cost of the ride goes to covering fuel etc, so there isn't all that much variation in price. After riding with Darrek, I decided that it was 100% worth it to pay a little bit more in exchange for having an experienced pilot. Darrek stressed that hot air ballooning is quite safe, but I still felt better having him in control. When we arrived on the ground, he surprised even me by breaking out some celebratory champagne. This allowed us to book a private trip for 2 at a good price (for a private trip, the extra large balloon rigs charge for 4-6 people even if only 2 are going).* Derrick, the owner, is an avid balloonist. You can tell he really enjoys taking passengers with him on trips around the Quechee Gorge and the surrounding mountains. He even keeps packages of Southwest Airlines roasted peanuts to hand out during the flight as sort of a joke. Oh, and if you're comfortable with the ups and downs, make sure you ask him to venture down for a closer look at the fish in the small lake nearby . . . it will be the highlight of the trip!

Day visit only…read more Considering the hot weather while we were visiting Vermont, we figured we'd try to find places to swim. This turned out to be an excellent destination for that purpose. The water was comfortable and relatively clean. Good mix of shallow and deep areas, and a pier for jumping off of / ladder for climbing back up. Also a large sandy area with decent quality sand for building/playing. It was also nice that they had a changing room/restrooms (in good condition), and snack stand. Our kids had a blast and we hope to return one day.

There are numerous bowling leagues, but the walk in customers are treated as if they were regulars. I found the complaint from the " league bowlers at home" to be hilarious. Anybody who actually bowls knows that going to a new alley, with different oil patterns, using a house ball and different shoes is way more than likely to be way off their normal throw.

We didn't expect to hit our normal averages because we didn't have our personal balls or shoes. But how bad could we do? I was down over 70 pins per string. Well, since the balls all have exceptionally small holes, expect 16 lbs or more, I had to go up 4 lbs from my usual to find anything I could even use. And I feel the ball was off some how as my shots all seemed to curve to the right, like it or not. Scoring system was adequate but seems a bit antiquated. Would not recommend and will not return. $35 for worn shoes (my wife's were especially bad and they had none better when asked) and wonky balls that were too heavy unless you're a kid.

Hurricane Irene really took a toll on 20 foot hole. Most of the stream (and much of VT for that…read morematter) was devistated from huge flash flooding and the swimming hole was filled in with mud, silt,and rocks. Some of the locals have been trying to restore the swimming hole by scooping out the mud with buckets. I will update more this summer on this progress.

Amazing stop at Lynn's marina and Tavern at Lock 12. For starters, this is our third time stopping…read morehere on our Jetski trips. Lynn is the reason we keep coming back. He has always been super responsive to our group, and his knowledge of the area is extensive. We docked at his marina and stayed overnight at Big G's Pub airbnb just up the block. Lynn was super-accommodating. Ten of us descended on his Pub for a late dinner, and despite being short on help at that late hour, Lynn did not disappoint. Wings, burgers, steaks, fries, were all fresh, hot and delicious. Jim at the bar keep our drinks cold and full. We enjoyed the classic rock music and playing pool, but most of all we enjoyed chatting with Lynn and hearing of his exploits and adventures. Two of our ski's broke down on our way to Whitehall, so we left them at a marina on our way up. Lynn called us the next day to see if we were able to pick them up or if we needed help. If you are in the area, stop by for a beer, a bite and a chat with Lynn, absolutely one of the nicest guys we have ever met. (Lynn, if you are reading this, pencil us in again for next summer, we'll be back!)
