There used to be a Piu Bello in isla Verde/San Juan that we frequented on biz trips there. Turns out this place is not related. It's an independent that has been in this location about a year. But I was curious about the name. I looked it up and Piu means in Italian more or extra. That's a fitting description of the gelato here -- which is beyond all expectations and absolutely delicious. I've always known that there is less fat and calories in gelato than in ice cream. But even if that were not true, I wouldn't care. This gelato is so creamy and rich; it's the definition of sinful. And more than worth every damn calorie! Before deciding what to get, I tried their coffee gelato (very good) and one other. I chose to get a small cup with coconut and chocolate sorbet. I loved them both. The chocolate was like eating dark chocolate ganache. And it went well with the coconut -- which had small bits of actual coconut in it. My husband got their passion fruit gelato -- a medium cup sized portion. And our friends shared the dulce de leche with extra caramel in it. This really was some of the best gelato I've eaten in a very, very long time (and I'm old!). Do I wish I lived closer? Yes. Am I sort of glad I don't? Yes. Cause I'd be here every day....trying all their flavors.

I got the Stracciatella, which I do not think I have ever had in a vegan version. Got a couple of vegan/gf croissants for the morning: plain, and peanut butter and jelly. Everything is clearly marked as plant based, with gluten free noted when it is. They do serve a few animal based menu items, so pay attention to that. The worker was helpful and let us know it would be a bit for the croissants as he was putting out the gelato selections and serving gelato to customers. Ok by us as the croissants were ready when we'd finished our gelato. There are pictures on the wall describing the various gelato flavors, which is a nice touch. It's a small gelato store with a case you can sew into with limited seating, but it was welcoming enough for us to take a seat and enjoy our gelato. Patagonian white chocolate was also a wonderful combination. Freddo's is a bit pricy for what you get but pro tip.... You get more bang for your buck when you order a 2 scoop cone compared to a small cup that you can only get 1 flavor for less than $1.50 more and you get twice as much gelato to enjoy!
