I'm keeping Pizza Box at four stars but I have to say I had my eyes opened a little bit about just how good it is. On Friday night(3/5/10), my wife and I ordered a pie. Half meatball and half ham. The ham was really good. The meatball was decent but the ham was better. The crust was really good, especially when I ate it later as leftovers. I had my brother and a friend coming up from DC. We offered them leftovers but our meat and cheese pie violated both their religious beliefs so we went back there and they ordered plain slices. Both are from Long Island/NYC but haven't lived there in years. And both kvelled over how good the Pizza Box was. One ordered a third slice because he really enjoyed his first two. Something I noticed on both trips that night was the Margharita(sp?) pie. We saw it coming out the oven on the first trip and at a happy family's table on the second trip. It looked like a rectangle of Italian deliciousness. My wife remarked that it was a little like Sicilian but a thinner crust. So that is what I plan to order next time. My sister, and Arcadia student, recently took me to Pizza Box while I was visiting. The restaurant is only a few minutes for the campus, and clearly a favorite among locals. The restaurant had a variety of pizzas on display, and they all looked delicious. They also have a pretty big menu of other items. I ordered the chicken Cesar wrap and would not order it again. The lettuce and chicken both could have been cut into smaller pieces and wrap was lacking in dressing. I also ordered the appetizer sampler- the mac and cheese bites were delicious! I have been to Pizza Box Twice, so I think I'm fairly qualified to write a review. The first time I went to Pizza Box I picked up a plain pie and a 2 liter coke bottle. I wanted to eat two slices, and then save the rest for later or for my housemates. However, it was so good, and I was so hungry, that I believe I ended up eating 4 slices! The second time I went to Pizza Box just the other day with my friend. We were hungry after a long morning, and found ourselves arriving there at about 2:00. The employee helping us was very helpful even though we were the only patrons in the store at the moment. This time, we got some individual slices, and I have to admit, they were a little too greasy and not as good as the whole pie. So, if you, the reader, take one thing away from this review, remember that at Pizza Box I found the pies better than the slices. Also, the pizzeria can not take card payments, so I had to withdraw cash from the ATM, which was quite a hassle. With that said, the 10% discount for Arcadia Students, combined with the friendly employees still has me leaving a four star review. This place has the best Margarita pizza in the area. I drive over an hour to get here just for the Margarita pizza. I recommend not putting many toppings on as they can overpower the pizza flavor. They also have a very tasty Lobster Bisque soup if like Lobster Bisque soup. read more

Don't even want to give them one star .. have no clue how to deal with guests. I've been before but they showed me that me and my money are not welcome any longer. Was in this evening at a 6:15 or so. Waited to order (no biggie). So now I'm ordering . Told the lady I would like to start with 6 wings and toasted ravioli . Rang me up and I paid . She then took care of Bruce so why interrupt me then. After a bit 10/ 15 minutes the 2slices salad and ravioli came up. 5 minutes later the wings were ready. So now at 6:50 I hear I young lady ask for my veal parm . My family was just about finished eating at this point and we need to be leaving shortly for an appointment. I tell the girl to cancel my veal at this point . She says to me " you were told it would take awhile" . 1st. I was not told that or I would have ordered something else since I knew I had to leave by 7:10 2nd . How would she know what I was told when she was not involved in any way with me when I ordered . 3rd. That is not how you respond to a guest .( the customer is always right ) Not one person apologized or showed any remorse over by bad experience. I have over 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry and have done everything from dishwashing to general managing. I guess Bruce spends enough money to keep them open. Yup! This is probably one of the hidden gems around philly (suburbs). But check this place out for some good pizza, and cheesesteaks. I would recommend the Stallone Pizza, my favorite thing to get here. Try also the Sausage/Bell Pepper/Onion hoagie! That is amazing!!!! Sadly, the worst gluten free pizza ive ever had in my entire life. It's basically a frozen piece of cardboard with melted cheese. I'm used to gluten free pizza that's are made out of actual dough. I've had various degrees of gluten free pizza and can deal with some mediocre pizza but this one I actually threw out, it was that bad. I honestly wish they wouldn't advertise GF pizza available because I would have rather ordered something else. Pizza Box did an amazing catering job for my father's 90th birthday and my parents 68th wedding anniversary. The event was for 165 guests and they mastered it with ease and precision. They aren't the smiliest bunch, but that doesn't mean they are not servicing the community well. Pizza box is the combination of two good types of pizza place, 1) the place run by an old-4th generation pizza maker who speaks Italian better than he speaks English, and 2) the place were you can get a slice with lots random, usual toppings (as well the usual toppings). Let me start by saying that I would have given this place 4 stars had they not fucked up part of my order. Mark got it in his head that he wanted pizza tonight, because he heard from the girl that cut his hair today that this was the best pizza in the area. You see, my wife is from Brazil, the undisputed pizza and arguably, the food capital of the world. The pizza in Brazil is incredible, fresh, not oily or greasy, and made to order in a high 800+ degree brick oven. If your looking for GREAT pizza, look elsewhere. The top pizza in the area in our opinion, is Trio's in Glenside and 2nd is New Venice Pizza in Elkins Park. Best pizza ever! Such a great selection of interesting pizza flavors. I go here with friends, sit outside when it's nice. The staff is so friendly. It can get busy at lunchtime but it's always great service. It's just a cozy eat spot and reasonably priced, as well. If you can get the barbecue and honey mustard chicken slice - go for it! Buffalo chicken is a second favorite. Just a regular slice is great but this is the place where you can be a bit adventurous because you'll be pressed to find something you won't like. They have little Stromboli and Italian delicacies available, as well. Their salads are good. Seasonally, soups are available. Best kept secret: They have a hot plate of fresh sugarcoated doughnuts complimentary. I have to hold myself back from these little sinful nuggets. When we first moved to Glenside, one of my best friends, a former resident said "Oh well you have to go to the Pizza Box." I was kind of turned off by the name of the place, at first. It just makes me think of the smell of warm cardboard, which is my least favorite part of the pizza eating experience. But Pizza Box is a-okay. It's quite good actually, and while it's not the best pizza I've had in all of South Eastern PA, it's easily the best pizza in Glenside. Last night, I had a serious craving for a meatball grinder. I wanted a crusty roll, covered in gooey cheese and full of meatballs and tomato sauce, and I wanted it toasted in the oven. I decided to chance Pizza Box; I'd had their pizza before but nothing else. The sandwich was fantastic and it was exactly how I wanted it prepared. I had only planned to eat half but couldn't stop myself from finishing it. We arrived there about one hour before closing and the staff was very nice. They still had pizza by the slice out, but it looked like it quite possibly had been sitting out for hours, so I wouldn't have wanted to chance a slice. I would definitely grab a slice earlier in the evening or on a busy weekend, though, because they have a nice selection of types available, from a nice thin crust with basil and tomato, to the standard sausage or pepperoni. read more

Being detached from my hometown for 20 years, I can get pretty nostalgic for the food I was raised with. Finding a good cheesesteak is easy in Philly, but I've found that capturing the classic Philadephia pizza has become more difficult. The neighborhood spots I loved as a kid have either sold, closed or passed on to a less competent 2nd generation. Attempts at staking out a new place have given me lukewarm results. What is a Philadelphia pizza? That's a tough question, but I know if when I taste it. Very similar to NY pizza, sure, but there is something about the texture of the crust, the mouthfeel of the cheese, the sweetness of the sauce and the oregano added liberally that combines for that special something. Pizza Box has that taste nailed down, with a dose of the old world sensibilities that was bee drifting away over the years. Notice the beautiful ovens and the massive pot of simmering sauce. This a serious pizza-centric operation with a lot of options, but also a place where an aficionado can be happy with just a cheese pizza. Throw in some very excellent cheesesteaks and free zeppolis while you wait and I'm completely sold. This is a guaranteed stop on my next trip home. read more

Just came back from lunch here for the first time and man am I stuffed! Huge $3 slices with all kinds of awesome toppings to choose from. I had a slice of buffalo calamari, which was just spicy enough and had that nice, creamy melted bleu cheese on top too. I also had a slice of cheesesteak-stuffed pizza, which weighed about two pounds. It was equally delicious and practically had me walking out of the place on all fours. I adore how sublimely delicious and creative pizza their combinations are (shrimp and vodka sauce to die for!) and I adore how reasonable their prices are. Thin crust, sicilian and stuffed - the make it all with perfection. Funny story: I once ate and walked out and forgot to pay!! I called back mortified and they said no worries!
