My first trip to Italy, and my first pizza in Italy! Okay, so I'm guessing that 'Strega' has something to do with witches, or wicked, or Halloween? The decor in this restaurant in general was really nice except for the cheap looking Halloween decorations. I'd drop the 'theme' if I were these owners. The restaurant is not in the main touristy area of Venice which was nice. There were tourists in the restaurant, but for the most part, the receptionist at the hotel told us this place is legit and I believe it. The restaurant was not full even though it was lunch time, and after getting lost trying to find it, we were hot, hungry, and ready to sit down for a decent lunch! We sat outside even though it was super hot and humid that steamy July day, but they didn't have 'air conditioning' in the sense that most Americans are familiar with it so sitting inside was no cooler. The whole outdoor area is under grape vines which made it feel really green and fancy. The server we had was great. I opted to go for the classic cheese pizza as my very first pizza in Italy and am not in any way sad I didn't do anything else. Although my wife's pizza, and my brother's pizza, and my sister-in-law's pizza also all looked amazing, just tasting the pizza in cheese form is what I wanted and it was really good! It was also really large! It also was not very expensive. I would think it would cost more in the US for a pizza that size. The dough was crispy, yet soft and not burnt on the edges, but just a golden brown. The sauce was perfect and the cheese... oh the cheese! I didn't think I would be able to eat the whole pizza, but then I ended up eating it all anyhow! So yummy!

This was the only place open by the time my husband and I decided to eat dinner. It was packed with locals so I thought it might be better than the reviews but I was wrong. Very cheap but super greasy and fatty pizza. I only ate half and felt disgusting after. Don't recommend unless you like your pizzas dripping oil down your arm while you eat. The only redeemer for this place was the good service and the decent prices.

Very pricey for the size of meals. Pizzas are alright and tasty but the pasta was super small, cold and had way too much garlic. Just recommended for pizza! The location is nice (backyard)

Good organic pizza, nice and uncomplicated service. We had pizza Capricciosa and Penne Arabiata. The later was very hot!

But what they've created can be a very fun experience if approached with the right attitude. Come during daylight hours, hopefully late afternoon (for lunch/drinks/appetizers) and sit only at an outside table along the Grand Canal. Situated near the bridge to Piazza Romolo, Rio Novo isn't on a very attractive part of the canal. Ignore the mass of people hurrying back to the bridge to catch their bus to who knows where. Look only at the canal. This might be the busiest, most intensely crowded part of the Grand Canal and it's a gas to watch. Motorboats kicking up wake, tourists on private water taxis making their way to a more attractive part of town and, once in a while some gondoliers taking passengers in a part of the canal far from serene. Is all of this fun to watch? Indeed. The staff here aims to please and will happily grab your camera and wait patiently for pedestrians to pass by before snapping a few dozen photos of you enjoying the place. After your meal, the server will return with an ice cold, complimentary Limoncello for you. And the food and drink? Very reasonably priced and satisfying (we enjoyed both spaghetti and lasagna), especially when you throw in the waterfront entertainment. There's a million prettier canal-adjacent restaurants, pricier and run by Italians. That said, Rio Novo is a fun place from which to enjoy the hustle-bustle of the canal along with well-priced, satisfying food and drink.

On our last evening in Venice we wanted some Crudo di Mare. Checked online and found this place…read more Reviews looked very good. So we came here for an early dinner (around 5pm), kitchen is open through! Took a nice table inside by the window. Our Bulldog was welcome as well. Staff/owner very friendly, helpful and made us feel very welcome here. Inside it's a nice, cosy atmosphere. Good selection of wine on the menu as well. For all kinds of budgets. And at the counter a nice display of all kinds of seafood. Lovely place. We've ordered the Crudo di Mare plate and Spaghetti Vongole. And a .375ml bottle of their white house wine, which turned out to be a good pairing with the seafood. Both dishes were excellent! Plenty of Vongole (clams) in the pasta dish, Spaghetti were perfectly cooked. Vongole were nice and fresh and the dish perfectly spiced (not too much, which is good). A real highlight definitely the Crudo di Mare. Two langoustines (so nice and sweet flavour), two red shrimp. scallops, tuna, swordfish, oysters and tuna tartare. All fresh, all tasty. An excellent mix of wonderful fish and seafood. Quality wise along on top with the best ones we've had so far (we love Crudo di Mare). And all is nicely presented. Really made our day, this meal here. After the meal we even got some aperitif on the house. A wonderful place. Feels very relaxed, lots of great items on the menu. And really fair prices, this is a real gem here with great value. And we will definitely be back next time in Venice. Highly recommended!
