This place is off the road and in the woods outside of Chuburná. Look for the yellow sign of Africa…read moreto find it. We had reservations but did not really need because there was only one other table occupied. They do all the cooking in their wood fired oven which gives it a lot of flavor. We started the meal with a caprese salad. Nice mozzarella, tomatoes, basil in a balsamic glaze. We asked for more balsamic for our taste. I ordered the meat calzone and my wife ordered the baked ziti. My calzone was stuffed with sausage, pepperoni, peppers, onion, and cheese. Very good. My wife got the baked ziti. Her serving was the size of a casserole dish. It could feed at least 3-4 people so we have a lot of leftovers. The taste and the sauce was delicious. Wine selection is limited to Chardonnay or Syrah. Good pour on the wine. Waitress was very nice and provided great service. A gem off the beaten path.

My sister-in-law says it's bad for her because she lives close and will be breaking her diet too often now. The super clean, friendly, and could succeed in any town in the states. English spoken by some of the family (the part from Oregon). Cute little gallery run by them (next door) had stuff we bought to finish our Xmas shopping. Well earned 5 star review. By the way, staff quickly lost a chair as they saw her coming, and other than the table skirt being a common bit too low, the dining room was friendly to my wife's wheelchair, and so was the gallery. I did not use the bathroom, but believe it has 2-3 steps to get in. The dirt parking lot was hard-pack and there is a curb cut. Much more accessible than most other places. Ordered a mango and strawberry daiquiri and they were not blended. Rim was something strange. Not salt, sugar nor tajin. Service was very slow. The guy was nice but would rather chat with his coworkers. Ordered an avocado pizza, and it tasted like something from the school cafeteria. Chaya crepes were soggy, drowned in sauce to the point where it nauseated me. God help anyone who comes here looking for a fulfilling meal. Included gratuity into the check, but told me I didn't have to pay it if I didn't receive good service. What a weird spot to be put in!?

There's a great variety of drinks--nice traditional mezcalitas, chaya cocktails (with xtabentun), clericot, beer, wine, you name it. The last year or so they've had, in my opinion, a very fine singer/guitarist; she's there, I believe, Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and maybe Saturdays. Music starts at 8:30 (it used to start at 8:00, and I wish it still did or at 7:30) -- no cover. (That's not to say that on the other nights you won't hear good music; over the years there have been many fine trova singers.) All in the atrium of an historic building: in our opinion, a special if not unique place in Merida.
