We have been by here several times but today is our first in. Lunch testing. Have heard all good about this. They do handmade chicken fried steaks in evening but frozen ones at lunch. So will try the evening menu another time. Salad bar is good, nothing exotic. Burger for myself with some special parts going in. Jalapeños, blue cheese. no eggs available. Hot water drinks. Is cold day! Maybe cottage fries I got. Exceptional good. Reminds me of homemade potato chips my grandmother Irma made. Very similar. Really good burger. Sure one of better I have had. Honestly extremely disappointed. We went in and were immediately greeted and told to choose where we'd like to sit. Very nice! When we sat down the service was a bit flakey, but I digress-- when we had sat down and decided what to order nothing was said to us regarding our choices. It's important to note my father got the new york steak and I got the filet mignon. On the menu the there was a note saying to ask about current prime rib and ribeye prices-- nothing about the other cuts. However, when it was time to pay, my father noticed that the price was different from the menu! So, naturally, my father mentioned the price difference and the waitress tried to say that it was on the menu-- no, we specifically looked at what was on the menu and didn't get the specifically mentioned cuts. When we told her that it in fact wasn't on the menu, she pointed out that there was a sign by the door. Which, remember, we didn't even have time to notice and she didn't say anything when we ordered the food. Not to mention, I didn't think of it at the time, but I should have asked for a refund or something else because my filet mignon was bad-- and my sister's burger was mediocre, just to mention. I got it specifically because it's supposed to be tender and a better cut, but it was hard to cut and while I ordered a medium, it was more cooked than my father's medium well. While my father enjoyed his steak he tried mine and agreed that it was pretty flavorless and the charr was oddly overpowering. Overall while the waitress was nice and took off our drinks to try and make it right (despite it only really making up for mine and not both) the menu was outdated and the food was not very good. I lived in Los Angeles for the last 20+ years and prime rib is my thing. I went to every restaurant there that offered prime rib. This also included the famous, "lawry"s steak house that serves there prime rib table side on specially made stainless steel carts. John and Kayla Edward's don't have the fancy speciality made carts but what the do have is better than any prime rib experience I had in Los Angeles. The salad bar is amazing and John is a master at cutting you the perfect slice of the best prime rib. The quality of meat he serves is better than what I had on the west coast and very resonably priced. When I come to Hastings, going to the Plainsman is a must and is always a highlight of my trip. The locals need to be thankful to have such a fantastic restaurant in there community. If you haven't been to the Plainsman for prime rib yet than you have to go. My husband has wanted to come to the Plainsman for a long time! He just finished his medium rare steak! "Best steak I've had in a long time!" He didn't salt the steak it was seasoned perfectly. I had a local friend take me here for the Saturday night prime rib buffet and WOW it was delicious. You start with unlimited salad bar from a unique covered wagon then when you're ready you can head over to the carving station where they take off a slab of prime rib and you get to choose from various sides to compliment the meat. This is some high quality beef that doesn't get much better. Worth the weekend drive if you're around the Hastings area! read more

Very poor service sat 30 minutes in clear view of the staff only to be ignored. Only when I stopped a busboy to ask for some wait staff and then waited 10 more minutes for someone to come to the area. In the mean time others had arrived and when the waitress finally got there she took care of them first needless to say I walked out I have gotten sick from the food there once but was willing to give them another chance drove 30 miles to eat there should have just eaten at McDonald's. read more

During a recent trip to Hastings, a friend of a friend recommended Plainsmen. After my GPS had me drive down some dirt road in the middle of a corn field, I found the place. As I arrived, I was not sure what to expect, but this was about it: gravelly parking lot, 70's feeling decor, locals at the bar and good steak. I had the rib-eye as they only serve prime rib on the weekends. Dinners come with a salad bar, meat was pretty good and the service was excellent. I am giving it only four star mostly for the salad bar which was lacking in any fresh veggies. If you like iceberg lettuce and jello salad, it would be your dream, but -1 for me. ** WARNING** While I was there, I did overhear a group of folks (Owner and friends?) loudly complaining about some Mexicans who worked at a friends business who were speaking "Mexican" so they had to be told to speak English. The reasoning was that when they spoke "Mexican" they were probably talking about anyone who couldn't understand. Not sure if this is the norm, but be warned, you may get some Red State politics with your tasty piece of meat. I am not taking off any stars for this as I didn't go there for a political conversations, but just be warned. read more

Old school Nebraska steakhouse atmosphere. Opened in 1978 - decor probably hasn't changed much, but I like that about it. Loved the covered wagon salad bar - although contents weren't amazing - needs more fresh veggies. They're known for their prime rib - mine was excellent, with fresh horseradish (not the creamy kind). The beers are super cold in frozen mugs, wine selection not so much. If you want great prime rib, baked potato and all the iceberg with bluecheese you can eat - highly recommend the Plainsman. Besides the prime rib, other menu choices not as top notch, mom had the pork tenderloin sandwich and wasn't as pleased as I was with the prime rib. Hands down, THE BEST STEAK IN THE USA. 38 states.. I've been to every steak place worth mentioning so far. Consistency is the name of the game as well. Every single time I go, I get the same quality 4.5 star steak each and every time. Cooked medium rare with some bit of crisp to the edges, this place is the king of the New York Strip and even Kaiser of the Prime Rib. I always come where when i get a chance, even if it is a 240+ drive one way for me and I typically bring a friend. The staff is pretty laid back and casual Nebraska standard, and the place is dimly lit and easy on the eyes with dark wood interiors, a wagon for a salad bar which makes me chuckle. $16 for the best steak you ever had and a trip to the salad bar...it almost feels likeyou are stealing from them! I've been to places that had $100 steaks which weren't even on par. They use in-house meats which are cooked to perfection and always a good cut of meat that smacks of midland pride and washes down nice with a beer or cider beer. Have i had a better steak before? Sure! For the price? No way. Have I had the same level of consistency? Heck no! Most places i go it's a 4-5 star steak on my first visit and then its a 3 star every time afterwards.. usually with the meat being tougher and overcooked. No two cows are the same and tough cuts happen, but it takes a master of the grill like Plainsman Steakhouse has to make a steak the same each and every time! Is it worth going out of your way for? Heck yes it is! Stop eating fast food like a tool and go here! Add it to your bucket list... just trust me... unless you have unrealisitc standards or are going in there TRYING to hate the food, you will be pleasantly delighted with the meal! By the way, this is a sturdy old fashioned building... your phone may not get signal oin here when combined with its location... just a fair warning. The new management is great! They were very accommodating with a very large order paying separately. The food was delicious especially the steaks and prime rib... they know their meat. We have always enjoyed going to the Plainsman for a Friday or Saturday night prime rib. The prime rib we had Sat. night was better than ever. It was very dense and very tender and done to perfection. Ben always always walks around and ask "how's your salad" and then later comes by and asks "how's your meal". He will stop and visit for a few minutes also. Been coming here for years. Some of my earliest memories are from stopping here on the way to grandma's house back in the early 80's. The food is ok, but everyone else seems to love the salad bar and prime rib. My dad also thinks the prime rib is just ok, but he makes a pretty mean one at home...beer on tap is very basic and pretty boring. The atmosphere is nice, sitting by the fireplace on a cold day tends to invite strangers over to your table so they can warm up... The salad bar is set up in a covered wagon. Waitress are very busy and it takes a little while to get your drinks, but they don't forget about you, which is really nice. My grandma says the owners will walk around and talk to you, making sure everything was good, but I haven't seen them. That isn't a big deal to me though, the waiter/waitress can ask that same question. I'd give more stars for more/better beer selection, and more food options or new recipes maybe. read more
