I've been a member of this Planet Fitness for three years and usually the staff is great. On August 25, 2025, I asked the front desk--who I later learned was the manager, Miguel--if the TVs could be coordinated with their correct network tags. He seemed irritated. Later, while I was on the treadmill, Miguel and another employee looked at me and were talking; as I left, I asked the other employee if there was an issue? The employee yelled, "It's all about you, dude!" while eating and having ear buds in. I called the next day and told Miguel a better way to handle it would have been, "I'm sorry--I'll look into it." He apologized, I said that was all I needed, and then he disconnected the call. This didn't feel like a Judgment Free Zone, and I no longer feel comfortable here. I used to go daily here about 10 years ago. Just re joined . same old thing = the gazillion ellipticals and bikes are ALWAYS empty except 1 or 2. waste of space!! sell half and put in more weight machines. You CANT get on the weight machines from 5 to 10pm , WAY over crowded !! Mens room still reeks like it did in 2015 ! water fountain has almost NO pressure..same as 10 years ago . In town for work and was looking for a gym to join while in town. Came to this location and was denied access to the guest pass that was granted to me via PlanetFitness.com. The facility states that the franchise owner has not been honoring the pass that is offered online to guest. If this is the way a franchise owner treats patrons, I would suggest no one to establish membership at this location. Go somewhere where your business is wanted. read more

I've been a Planet Fitness member for years. I switched from the Urbandale gym to the one on SE 14th when my fiancé and I moved in 2018. When we first started going, it wasn't too bad. I was sad to see that the one on SE 14th does not honor or do the Black Card Trial Days like the one in Urbandale did. I even got an e-mail about it in October and was excited to try it out, with the hopes of signing up for it (honestly to make sure the amenities worked), and was told that they had no idea what I was talking about even when I showed them the e-mail from corporate. Lately, it seems like the upkeep on the machines and workout equipment is extremely lacking as well as general maintenance around the gym. I went in a few Saturday's ago to a broken outer front door and broken interior front door on opposite sides. Then proceeded to walk through to the women's room to see that both water fountains were not working, nor were 3 of the 4 brand new (within the last 2 months) stair machines. What makes it worse, in my opinion, is that they just take paper and write "BROKEN" and a huge sad face and place it on the things that aren't working. I haven't been to the gym in months without seeing at least 2 or 3 of these signs every time I go. My fiancé has claimed that the showers and toilets in the men's room are not the greatest and half the time the sinks are not working. Luckily, I haven't seen much of an issue in the women's room. Overall, staff is fairly friendly and always greet you when you check in. There's been a lot of turnover since I've started coming here, and there for a while it seemed like a manager was always around when I was there in the afternoons making sure things were stocked and cleaned properly. I know that I've seen the same piece of gum on the floor by the hip abductor machine for 3 months... so that's not getting cleaned. I understand that things happen, but I really wish management or the company would take charge and fix the things that need done. I know that the monthly fee is $10 or $20, but each year we also pay a club maintenance fee. It doesn't seem to be doing any sort of good if they aren't using it to keep us coming back. read more

This is a very large planet fitness which I love. The problem is the men's locker room was absolutely disgusting. This was not a busy time of day either. They had 2 dudes behind the counter on their phone. I guess none of the guys could be bothered to work. Toilet paper and paper towels on bathroom floor. Dusty lockers. Water all over floors and counters. Dust under every surface... this locker room never gets a full cleaning job done on it. read more

I would give zero stars if I could. The staff is never helpful. The tanning beds are always broken and when they aren't broken they are never clean. The staff holds meetings (with no one at the desk or on the floor) during peak hours (5:30-6:30) and won't come out of the break room even if you knock. This has been going on for years. I've asked 3 times in the last month to have a manager call me and I provided the desk staff with my contact information.... No phone call! read more

I've only been a member here for about a month, buy I've enjoyed it so far. They have a pretty good sized space with a clear divide between people doing cardio and people lifting weights. As long as you aren't there during the few hours where the place gets pretty packed (pre and post 9-5), then you always have your own personal space. Open 24 hours a day during the week and stay open until 9pm on weekends. I have yet to attend one (although I really should), but they offer a variety of different classes at numerous times. Costs are also pretty low. There are two different membership options at $10/month and $20/month. There's no reason to not go. read more

I don't know why anyone would rate this location below 4 stars. What are people expecting for $10/month? I just moved to DSM from Ames where my gym membership was close to $70. I did have more options at the pricier place, but still, $10/month... So far everyone has been nice (including the front desk staff which someone else mentioned in another review). It's only my SECOND day in Des Moines, and I decided that I wanted to sign up for a membership. I'm familiar with Planet Fitness, and I like their equipment and what they stand for. But as I'm signing up, I mention that I just moved from CA and the manager laughs without really explaining why... well, welcome to Des Moines I guess. Old machines, and the staff isn't knowledgeable about all of the equipment or tanning beds available. I went to the one in ankeny one day a few weeks ago, and there is just a huge difference in the machines and now updated they are. The staff still doesn't know anything about the tanning beds but I like their machines so much better to workout with that I will stick that Ankeny Planet Fitness. read more

This franchise is one of the worst and specifically this location...during a time of crisis and state emergency they still take there monthly payment as jobs are closing and there will be no resource of income for supply...I called today as the governor issued a state of emergency and a complete shutdown to get a refund due to needing supply for my children over the next month and all Matt the gm at this location no last name because he refused could say is we cannot give you a refund we will prorate your next month when we reopen...then gave me a number that just gave me an email to contact my local pf...lol I have contacted pf with email to close my account they should be more worried about the well being of society and not there franchise at a time like this ..good luck!!! read more

Equivalent of a prison gym. Shady clientele with shifty eyes. Reflective of the geographical location in the city. Tacky music that lacks any taste plays while you work out amongst the seedy underbelly of Des Moines. The staff is nice which is the only redeeming aspect about this gym. read more

I used to workout here when I lived in the area, great gym! The place is modern, clean, and friendly people. The entire establishment down to the locker rooms are very clean and well-maintained. There are a number of treadmills and ellipticals, I have never had to wait for one. Most days I went and there were only a handful of people there, the busiest day I was there it was PACKED, but I still did not have to wait for a machine. All the members keep to themselves which I like. The staff is always friendly here. They have a ton of TVs to keep your mind occupied. I had the Blackcard membership which I recommend, great price and you bring a guest anytime you want for free! They are also open 24 hours except select days. Great gym for people just starting to get back to a fitness routine or people who want to workout in peace. read more

I travel all over the US for work so I visit a Planet Fitness in almost every location that I visit. This location is one of my regular spots since I frequent Des Moines often. This location is a fairly large location and can get pretty busy around 5PM during the week. Although most of the traffic appears to be in the free weight area and around the weight machines. The cardio machines are a plenty and I have yet to see one not in working order. All in all a fairly typical location for PF. read more

Des Moines SE 14th I did like this gym I have been a member for years I am looking for another gym now !They installed new machines /got rid of most of the arm machines I was there today watched all the disappointed people walking around looking for these machine and then using free weights I need arm machines ,my legs don't need to be bigger The reverse curl machine is misdesigned I believe it will hurt someone, as with no back support I puts a ton of pressure on your back while trying to use . The gym is like designed for ladies now, all butt and leg machines Should the men go somewhere else? You know all the time they have had ripped pads ,machines not working having to watch boring TV and having to wait for the machines they got rid of and then right out side the garbage and crap all over not that big of deal ,but this will make me leave You can tell they have no pride it just a job ,Its too bad I will transfer to another location or another gym Mark I was a back card member for years Maybe its time to get closer to your business read more

It's not my first pick for a gym but the price is right. It's bigger than the one close to my work (in Urbandale) so even though it's kind of out of the way and more of a hassle, I do like this one the best. Staff is always very nice and overall the gym is always clean. The only thing that is slightly annoying (which happens at the Urbandale location as well) is the showers seem to NEVER heat up. I will stand there with it completely turned to hot for at least 2 minutes before I finally just give up. I turn it the all the way opposite direction just to make sure their plumbing isn't backwards and only gets colder. It never gets warmer than cool. read more

This is the worst workout experience I have ever had. I come to improve the quality of my life and leave frustrated and more agitated by the lack of professionalism and maintenance of the equipment. I live so close that this is a place I only go when I have no other means to get my workout. The leg press which is a major piece of workout equipment for people has been broken for 9 plus weeks! The staff says yeah I doubt it gets fixed anytime soon! Wow! I think this tells you that this is a gym built on a concept of marketing dollars not about improving the quality of their customers health. Terrible management training. Great value for the money $21.19 a month for workout, tanning & hydromassage bed. Plus the option of bringing a friend! The 30 minute circuit is nice for when you want a balanced workout with little time to spare. Little disappointed in the ab/stretch machines. They are very worn and have cracks and tears in the upholstery. There are plenty of machines and I've hardly ever had to wait to use a machine. read more

Basically I love this place! I come a couple days a week and enjoy yhe fact I can jump on my machine of choice without waiting for anyone to get off it. For most part, this a place where people work out, I don't see a lot of people hanging out in front the mirror taking pictures. The planet fitness I used to go is on SE 14 this place is dirty and the machines are old, I decided to cancel my membership 2 days after they withdraw my annual fee and they refused to reimburse my annual fee of more than $40.00 the manager was ignoring me when I said it was not fair and that I was not aware of their "policy" I would not recommend this place at all, this is a rip off and the place is not clean at all! read more

Do not choose this gym if you have a senior fitness program through your health insurance. The "free" membership has cost me $66.36 in three months. I have Silver & Fit through my insurance, and the Planet Fitness Urbandale was convenient for me, so I chose it. However it took three visits before I found someone at the desk who said they knew how to get my membership active in their records so I could use the facility. I had my printout for the program that stated it covered a regular membership, but the counter person put me in as a black (premium) member that's not covered. I got a call two months later saying that I owed $30 plus. I went in to cancel the black card and get the regular membership, and the people at the desk seemed helpful and understanding. They said I had to put my credit card on record to cancel the membership, but there wouldn't be any charge. I thought I finally had everything set, but today I got my credit card bill and they put through a charge of $66.36! They are either incompetent or this is how they get extra money. Probably the worst planet fitness I've ever seen. Yes the location is large but their equipment is old and not updated to what most other planet fitness' have. When I walked in nobody was there to greet me at the desk or scan me in. Apparently it's so informal there you just scan it yourself (there's no sign telling u to do so) but I had to wait at the desk 5 minutes before someone else came in and just went up to the scanner and scanned themselves in. I finally get to the machines and have to wait for a biceps weight machine. When I finally get to use it it's like I said out of date so there's no extra weights you can add on for in between weights. There equipment had grip stickers on it where they had been used so much the finish had wore off and looked run down. Instead of updating they just slapped a sticker on it. Smh read more

Very clean, only complaint is that almost everything is machine resistance. There are no free weights racks. A lot of the machine have weird intervals or weights, like some might be missing weight blocks. read more

No lunks. No (open) judgement. Gray, open spaces. Plenty of clean, working machines. Quite a change from other facilities. I was able to get in, get my workout in and get out without any waiting and no annoying pitches for classes, gear or nutrition supplements. And if you join with the black card, you can do aqua massage or tanning. All still 1/2 what we were paying elsewhere. read more

I've been a member for about a year. Lost 120+ pounds so are...20 !to go. Staff remembers my name and is very friendly. Like "Cheers" for fitness. Workouts are at YOUR pace, no fancy girls to mess you up. Trainer is available when you're stuck or bored. Best $20/month ever!!!! read more

if Planet Fitness is "a no judgement " gym and you "strive" to give clients of all ages the best experience possible someone should tell the trainer what that means. I am 61 and had not exercised which I told the trainer LaVern when we had our consultation. He said he would make an individual plan for me. I had only been working with him for 2-3 weeks and the last day I was there I was struggling to do what he had wanted. He spent more time with another client at the same time. He berated me about how I was not focusing and wasn't taking this seriously. He talked down to me to the point I was crying. I noticed his other client just standing there listening to everything he was saying to me. I asked him if it was professional to have another client listening and instead of telling the other client to maybe take a walk he had the client JOIN US! I have never been treated so badly in public in my life. I left there humiliated and in tears. He certainly does judge people and he definitely needs a refresher class on how to be non judgmental and strive to help people instead of bringing them down, humiliated and leaving in tears. This one on 14th is a crap hole, too many promotions for a dollar to join it brings in idiots who tear up equipment, never re rack weights, and never wipe off the equipment they just sweat on. Used to be a good gym but seriously has gone down hill, the smell of dead rotting rats in the bathroom is hard to deal with also. They are more concerned about how someone dresses and what slogans are on your clothes so you don't offend anyone. Lol this is the Walmart of gyms I think. read more

With limited time, I chose to do the 30-minute circuit. I quit about half-way through out of frustration because even though space is reserved for the circuit, too many people were using the space but not moving when the lights indicated. The space is supposedly monitored by staff but no one came during the time I was there. read more

I've joined PF recently and just completed my first month here. I moved back to Iowa after living on East and West Coasts for the past 20 years. I know my way around gyms, and have had at least 5 memberships over the past 2 decades. What sparked me to sign up was the beginning of the year special. The price was right and the gym didn't seem too bad. I have worked out at much worse facilities. The girls who work the front desk don't seem very friendly or in shape. The gym is full of middle aged men and women who don't act like they want to be there. You see obese members doing weights and working out at the machines, when clearly they have had no instructional training or fitness goal setting. They have good cardio options and happily for me, they aren't used much. If you're looking for a gym with lots of "pretty people", this is not your spot. But if you wanna place to do the basics and then some, this might be a good fit. read more

Pretty sad I've been a member at planet fitness for over 2 years and today I decided to ware a tank that has the rebel flag on it and the words "if you are offended by this shirt you need a history lesson."Absolutely zero profanity and absolutely zero references towards race but i was approached by the manager saying I couldn't have that shirt on because they had complaints that it was offensive. Isn't planet fitness a judgment free zone? Isn't the United States suppose to be a free county. 1st amendment of the constitution says free speech. But yet somehow I was judged for what I was waring. Pretty sad actually. Since they decided to tell me I couldn't have that shirt on I went ahead and terminated my contract with them after 2 years of being with them. If your reading this I would strongly suggest an alternative gym for your fitness goals because obviously planet fitness doesn't stay true to their word in being a judgement free zone ! read more
