I've been going to Planet Fitness consistently for a while now and overall, it's been a good experience. For what I need, it checks all the boxes without feeling overwhelming. I actually signed up through my insurance using their Active & Fit program, and the process was super easy. The staff were able to get me set up the same day so I could simply start right away and have stayed consistent since. It's a great benefit, and definitely something worth taking advantage of if it's available to you. It can get busy during peak hours, but since I mostly stick to cardio, it hasn't really been an issue. There's a good number of machines--ellipticals, treadmills, stairmasters--and I've never had trouble finding something open. Everything is straightforward and easy to use, which I appreciate as someone who's not doing anything too advanced. There's a mix of free weights (dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells) available and machines if you're trying to work specific muscle groups. The facility itself is well-kept, and you'll often see staff making rounds and cleaning. The team is consistently friendly too--they greet you when you walk in, which is a small thing but makes the space feel welcoming. The only downside is that the bathroom can sometimes smell pretty strongly of cleaning products, but honestly, I'd rather that than question how clean it is. If you opt for the Black Card membership, you can enjoy some extra perks like--massage chairs, hydromassage beds, tanning, and access to other locations. It's a nice bonus and makes the experience feel a bit more well-rounded. I don't have a ton of specific needs when it comes to working out, and for someone more on the beginner or casual side, it really works well. April 9, 2026, 5:15pm. Jessica Reyes (General Manager) & Lei (Clerk), both of them have a bad attitude. When we walked into the gym, Jessica "unpleasantly" called my son "Kim!? Can you call your dad?" My son communicated to Jessica she could tell him. She replied "you can't use the printed bar code to sign in" Why can't she explain nicely? We have been doing that for more than a year and no one said anything before. My son & I are customers who should be treated properly. So I went to the desk to ask the clerk to check my membership. All of a sudden, Lei cut me off trying to explain the conversation between the Jessica (manager) & my son. WHY? I was already talking to other clerk. After completing four months of membership at planet fitness and about 35 visits this is what I'd like to say. Overall, the members are very conscientious about sharing the equipment and behaving nicely with each other. There's a slightly religious theme that underlines the members sportswear, many wear T-shirts with Christian messages. It kind of reflects Hawaii's core conservatism. In fact there's more Christian T-shirts here than when I used to be a member of the YMCA. There is an older gentleman who I think acts like an informal pastor to members but he's not excessively pushy. It does get busy after work and there are a few GYM RAT type people of both genders that try to monopolize the equipment but overall that also has been manageable. Equipment at this gym is supposedly fairly new and it seems to be being maintained. As a somewhat of an environmentalist, I think an excessive amount of paper and Cleaner is used on the machine, surfaces, its better to have extra clean pads and handles than dirty handles and pads. There are two large fans by the cable machines and some of the aerobics stations that keep the air moving. If you're concerned about infection control, you can do a fair amount of working out under those stations and reduce your risk of airborne infection some of the other back areas of the gym do not have as good airflow in my opinion. I do see people wearing masks from time to time there. I imagine they may have more health concerns, which I think is reasonable in a indoor place with a large number of people. The locker room that I use is functional. In most cases the restrooms appear clean enough for the amount of use they get. Based on a demographic of who uses this gym, there aren't a lot of homeless people or marginal people using location it as their cleanup center. I'm unaware of any theft problems. I did have my car damaged in the parking lot the spots are narrow and someone with a bigger car damaged my bumper as they were turning out of the spot, which probably would cost more to repair than my entire year's membership, so be careful where how you park. Of course that's not the stores fault. I really hardly have spoken to the staff in the four months I've worked out there, but they have been responsive and they seem to divide the labor between doing front deskwork and maintaining and cleaning the facility. I would like the place to be open a bit later on Saturday night so I could work out after I finish my job but overall there is plenty of hours to use the facility. One thing I really like about the planet fitness is it has a no trainer policy. Trainers maximize gym equipment call attention to themselves and try to get their clients preferential treatment. I find it to be a big distraction in a gym and is inconsistent the planet fitness, no judgment philosophy. There are people who seem to act like self appointed trainers within groups of their of people working out, but so far it has not been a problem for me to adequately use equipment for workouts. And I did see someone wearing what I would believe to be a local gang affiliated T-shirt while they were working out in a group which concerns me, but I wasn't gonna be complaining about it. I have had people try to stare me down, while I am using equipment to make me feel uncomfortable, but I've also handled that without confrontation. So so far I would say this place is a five star experience hopefully I'll do another review after another 35 visits. The planet fitness on Maui is not like some of the mainland PF. This is not well-mannered on Maui. Most of the knobs the pull.tje machines are missing. It makes it hard for most women and older people. None of the bars where the weights are stored on are cleaned not lubricated with a disinfectant solution. Trip hazards when the cleaning staff walks around with the vacuum extension card. Clean facility with lots of machines. The dumbbells goes up to 75lbs and there is no bench press or squat rack. If you are ok without those, this gym should fit your needs. I really like how there are many cleaning stations positioned throughout the gym. Check-ins are made easy through their mobile app. There are other services such as a tanning area which haven't used but it's there if you want to use it. The place is relatively clean.. but that's all I can say that's good. Mostly it's the members themselves. They lack basic gym etiquette. No you don't get to do 3 different exercises on the smith machine at one time. People are waiting. Regardless of what you "saw" on instagram. This is supposed to be a judgement free zone, however; it goes both ways you need to have an understanding of how to work out at the gym and stop hogging equipment and free weights also the number of people that I watch hurt themselves daily is amazing because there is NO education at this gym. While most of the gyms in Maui leave a lot to be desired and have fallen woefully behind with regards to education and equipment but The members at PF are actually a huge part of their problem. read more

It's my first experience of being a gym member, so I have nothing to compare it to. Also, it's a complimentary membership, so I'm not sure how the value compares to other outlets . I like that there's a wide selection of weight machines. There are a great number of cardio machines, like treadmills, stairsteppers, cycle, and elliptical. There is also a 30 minute intensive workout room. where you switch from one machine to another in a timed sequence. There are free weights, there is a stretching and yoga corner, and there are other items that I still haven't learned how to use. I notice a few machines are out of order every time I go, but still many other choices. I like the women's change room facility, with showers and lockers. I am enjoying the ability to pop in at my own convenience, and always have access to plenty of equipment. The staff are friendly, and it seems like all the patrons are enjoying themselves. read more

I just recently joined this gym after being a member of 24 Hour Fitness for a couple of years and Planet Fitness is a nice improvement. I know that its only been open for a short time but it is clean. Even the locker room was clean. For the weight training, they have 2 of each machines allowing people not having to wait to use it. They do have smith machines and dumbbells as well if you're not into weight training machines. The cardio area is extensive so you have a variety of machines to choose from. They do have the massage chairs as well as the hydro massage beds which is a nice way to either start or end a workout. They do have a tanning machine as well if you are looking to get a little tan. Of course this is for black card members. Planet Fitness is a nice welcomed addition to Maui. read more

I have been a member at different locations: California, Nevada, Missouri, Big Island and now here. Everything started out fine when I joined last March - I recently had an foot injury and was not able to do gym workout for 6-8 weeks. I don't know if this place is under new management - whatever- the woman's lock rooms shower area is in SERIOUS need of attention!!!! I told the nice young man at the front desk who was working alone that day and couldn't do anything. But as I told him the problem didn't happen today! 90% of the sinks are always out of order in the mens restroom. Always dirty and full of water on the sink countertops. Many treadmills are wobbly and several times (almost everyday) I need to remind the staff to refill the paper so I can clean my machine. I will also note that several treadmills I pointed out that were wobbly were never attended to months later. One particular treadmill that needs recalibrarting is still uncalibrated 1 year later, even though I reported it to the front desk on (3) seperate occasions months apart (speed 6 on the treadmill feels like speed 3). read more

I am a regular gym user here at Planet fitness and today was a huge letdown. The women's locker room flooded overnight and the lockers out by the gym floor were closed. So women had no access to the restroom or access to store their gym gear. I was willing to try and do a quick workout to avoid needing to use the restroom... but then I was told to leave my gym bag in my car. I have worked out at various PF's around the country and this by far is the worst one I have been to. I say this in terms of cleanliness and amount of pieces of equipment being out of commission. There is always equipment out of order and it never seems to be working again. The staff just stands around at the front desk. I have worked out at Lifetime Fitness and you pay a lot to go there. I realize one does not pay a lot to go to PF and I guess you get what you pay for. ‍ There are not a lot of options here on Maui so I am kind of stuck with PF. Ugh! read more

Going to Hawaii (Maui in this case) can be a challenge for working out...in a gym. But, now that I'm beyond my heavy lifting days, I can make due with most options. So it was very nice to see Planet Fitness in Kahului. It was a 20 minute drive from Kihei. Since I have a Black Membership there was no fee to use the gym and my wife was a free guest. The gym was busy and it looks like it will be successful. Good job PF. Oh, I will mention, entry into the locker rooms is totally opposite from our local Planet Fitness (and all others that I can remember), so pay attention when heading into the locker room! read more

I'll start by saying that the gym has a lot of nice machines. Most of the gym staff are very nice and helpful and they work very hard keeping the place clean. The bad part is when equipment breaks it can take months to fix. If you have a Black Card membership you may be disappointed. For Black card members, who pay extra for the perks, here is the current break down of what you get. Currently there are three hydro massage beds, but only one works. There's usually a waiting list to use it. Out of two tanning booths, none are working. Thats correct, none are working. One tanning booth has been broken since October of 2020 and the other has recently broke too. So if you're looking to tan you will be very disappointed. Out of three total body booths, for those that like red light therapy, there are currently two working. Prudent people would probably reach out to management regarding such matters. For those that reach out to management, I do wish you good luck. I haven't seen management in a long while, at least not in the late mornings and they also do not reply to messages left with staff. The managers are basically non existant. So for those that want a Black card membership just know that their equipment often breaks and stays broken for long periods of time. You might reach out to the manager, but they are not going to respond. If the managers ever fix the equipment the place would be truly great...So there you have it. read more

This is a medium-sized PF location with the usual assortment of free weights, cardio and toning machines. I like the stretching cage in the back area. Compared to other PF gyms I have visited, this one has less amenities and is a lot dirtier. Staff do not seem to clean the machines, floors or bathrooms very regularly. The equipment is quite well-worn. Users are not encouraged to wipe the machines down after use, so they don't. There are only a couple tiny video screens on the wall - too small to see. The bathrooms are a nightmare, especially the sink area and the showers. Those need to be cleaned hourly - they are horrifying. Staff are friendly enough but often distracted at the front desk. People wander in the door unnoticed, etc. read more

I love this gym! It's clean! Staff + members are friendly! Everyone cleans their machines well and I have yet to clean a machine and be left with a paper towel that isn't white still. Which is a great sign to me. I saw some iffy reviews so I was hesitant! All I have to say is don't wait and sign up now!! I went as a guest two days in a row and then signed up on the third. I highly recommend getting the black card. The hydro massage really saved me and made such a difference in how I felt after my work out! And the red light total enhancement. I feel like that's just a bonus for us girlies! And men too lol! So happy I signed up and I will be trying to get all my friends to sign up as well. read more

I used to go more, but now I actually have 2 different memberships for different reasons. Planet Fitness used to be amazing but it is a JOKE during COVID. The staff sit on their cellphones ignoring the 50% of members exercising, gathering in groups, touching and hugging, with masks around their necks, NOT covering face, or pulled down to expose nose. There are NO employees monitoring that members are wearing masks or sanitizing as required. Also, they charged me without warning, $40 for the two months the club was CLOSED and we couldn't use member services. If I could, I would give this place a NEGATIVE FIVE STARS. Hire some mask enforcement, and reverse the charges for when the club was closed, or your business is going to go under because everyone is going to catch COVID at this virus cesspool. read more

Attended a Yelp event here tonight. Wow, this place is huge. And even better it feels and looks super clean. The facility is awesome with lots of equipment and machines. There are sections in the back of the gym that really caught my attention. There is a 30 minute work out area so you don't have to plan or think about it! Just follow the board and the buzzer tells you when to switch! The staff was super friendly and very helpful. The manager was so sweet and shared with us her experience with planet fitness and how she ended up here on maui opening up this one after managing one in California prior. The black card spa.... wow! I felt like I was at a high end night club! The bathrooms alone are massive and retro! This is a nice addition for those who like massage chairs and tanning machines! 30 minute express workout is in poor shape. at least one machine completely out of commission for at least two weeks, other machines squeaking like crickets and the leather on the arm machines is falling apart. when I approached the desk, the lady shrugged and said we are aware, waiting for parts, there is nothing we can do. when asked how long it usually takes to get parts, she shrugged again and said who knows. Planet Fitness has a great new facility, lots of room, new equipment, and a great location. However, it lacks "The Aloha Spirit". The staff never greet you entering the building. They stick out their hand to have your phone or membership card to verify membership. That's it. No greeting, no smile, absolutely nothing. I go at least 5 times a week and nobody has ever greeted me including their Manager (team mirrors their leadership). Very robotic snobby approach. The Front Desk staff is usually huddling behind the desk talking up a storm and oblivious to the customers around them. I am lucky if I even make eye contact with the staff. Being a professional myself dealing with customers, I can honestly say the staff, including management, all need to be trained in Customer Service. On the gym floor, paper towel dispenser are usually out and the machines need to be wiped down. Bathrooms are not the cleanest either. Instead of the Front Desk staff huddling and talking to each other killing time, they should focus on replenishing the gym floor and refreshing it. From what I observe I truly feel that the staff are not using their time wisely or even waking the floors. When I see the staff on the floors on occasion, they tend to flock in groups like an excursion doing nothing. I am not sure where my membership dues are going. The only staff that are passionately working are the Personal Trainers from my point of view. I am a long time member of 24 Hour Fitness and I been with Planet since they opened. It's night and day when it comes to service and 24 has them beat easily with an older facility. read more

This gym is going downhill. The selection of machines are great but if something doesn't work or is damaged you better get used to it because fixing things doesn't happen here. Also, the staff could do with a little retraining. They are not welcoming and seem to be preoccupied with talking amongst themselves than being productive. Whoever is the manager needs to do their job or be replaced because their staff are like a bunch of newly graduated high school kids hanging out while getting paid. There are some annoying things that happen on the gym floor. Temperature of the facility is one of them. I know I should sweat but why is it so hot when i enter the building? Also, what is sad is how normal it is to walk up to a paper towel dispenser to find out that it is empty. Then you'll walk to another to find out the same. All the while you see the staff leaning at the front desk talking up a storm. You don't really see them doing routine sweeps of the facility to see what needs to be cleaned or replenished. They do have the sanitizers filled most of the time though. The whole mask thing is another issue. Feel however you want about it but if they are making it mandatory to wear it they should enforce it. They walk right past people who have it under their chin. I don't want to paint the entire staff with the same brush. There are a few who do say welcome me and actually clean. However, the majority of this team seems to lean towards the lazy side. The female employees seem to be way less friendly than the male ones too. After reading many reviews and how PF responds it seems as though they don't give a rip. They just tell you to talk to the manager. The reason why there are poor performers is because there is poor management. So speaking with them wouldn't accomplish anything at all.
