Called to cancel my membership because I was billed WAY more than expected they tell me I can't cancel over the phone and will continue billing me until I come in person. Usually like this PF a lot - but disappointed they took out the yellow 30-minute section. There were some machines there I liked (the ab with the ropes) and the steps were really useful for a range of exercises. And no ellipticals - just arc striders? It's always moderately busy unless you go later in the evening, but the staff has always been friendly and the place always clean and organized. I go late at night with my friend, we've been going for a while, recently There's been a couple more times at this location where iv had really uncomfortable experiences with older men. Once one was verbally harassing me and my friend and whistling at us and saying all sorts of gross stuff. I let the front desk people know, which was really already intimidating to have to explain and they dismissed it and said they thought the guy was special needs which we didn't think was true. We left after bc he was following us around. It was so sickening and made us feel so gross. I hated that they didn't care. I really hate returning to this location now. I am not a gym rat, I am just trying to get in better shape. I have been a member at gyms that are ruled by muscle bound baboons, and quit them Looking to find a more friendly and comfortable environment to improve my health. In case your are wondering it is at Planet Fitness, and specifically this one in Kalamazoo. I find the staff to be friendly and helpful, most times if they are not busy will chat with you for a sec. I have not found it to be dirty or out of supplies (towels etc), and seldom does a broken machine stay that way for more than few days. They do have rules about keeping the floor clear. For example no gym bags next to your machine, or over large water containers. I had a guest last year that liked to bring a bag with him from machine to machine, a staff member politely explained the rule and asked him to place it in a locker, handled nicely. No treats just a calm request with no threats. I have been impressed with this place so far. read more

The bathrooms here are abysmal. I've been here for a year now and they have not once washed the locker room floors or bathroom countertops it's really bad I think they literally only wipe down toilets and wipe showers and call it good. The customer service after hours for the few gentlemen at the front desk at night in rotation are never seen without fast food sitting on the floor watching movies or constantly away from the desk not to clean but to fuck off and hide from everyone I have seen the front desk guy walk off outside for at least a half hour talking on the phone then loud af come back continuing it inside out loud. read more

If you are from out of town, BEWARE, the staff will single you out. I have been a black card member for over 5 years now and have been to locations all over the US. I am courteous of other members and the PF policies (i.e. judgement free, no grunting, no slamming weights). I make sure to wipe down all the equipment I use and try not to disrupt others working out. Today I was wrongfully accused of slamming my weights. When I told them I was not slamming my weights, they said the noise came from "my general area" even though at least six other members were working out around me. They were insistent that it was me even though they did not see and only heard a noise from "my general area". Save yourself time and the headache and GO ANYWHERE ELSE. In numerous previous reviews, for this specific location, other members have had the same or similar experience. Well, the United States is a free country as long as you follow the constitution too, right? It's just simply the rules in both occassions. I've been loyal to Planet Fitness for several years now because of their affordable membership and easy to use gym equipment. This particular location is great - I like the layout, friendly staff, clean machines - which are rotated out if they get too old or newer machines arrive. Lately, it has been getting very crowded and the gym experience tends to be a little longer as you wait for machines to free up but glad people are getting their workouts in. The major issue I have with this place: I gotta have my music when I work out. It's a MUST. But connecting to Pandora or Spotify is such a pain because the WiFi is terrible. And very poor connection without WiFi. Consistently. Anything they can do to fix this would be much appreciated! read more

I've been coming here for months now and it's great! The workers are friendly and always say hi or goodbye. They are very helpful whenever I have a question on something or need something! It can get a bit crowded on the weekends and during the weekdays after 5 but that's expected! Every first Tuesday of the month they have bagel mornings! Locker room is always clean and the bathroom as well. I always see the workers going around and making sure the spray bottles and paper towels are full which is nice! I just moved back to Kzoo from Santa Fe. I've been a member of PF for three years. Most of those years were in Santa Fe. I tried both PF, stadium dr and the one one in Portage. Both are clean and has friendly staff. But the PF on stadium dr has four rowing machines which is a huge plus in my book. I am an avid kayaker and snowboarder. So I really appreciate the fact that there are four rowing machines- which me no waiting. Good staff, friendly people and clean environment. Thanks PF Staff for being friendly. To start, I would like to say I am not a huge guy. I dont eat raw eggs and live in the gym but I do like to get a good lift in a few times a week and make the time I do spend in the gym as effective as possible. If all you are looking for is to walk on one of the 45 (yes 45) treadmills then this is your place. Anything more serious than that, don't bother. Planet Fitness is not an ideal gym for people who are in shape and want to stay that way or make gains. This is a gym geared toward the obese and gym ignorant. I gave this place 5 months from the day it opened and it slowly got worse and worse. Here is my account of why. First off, the Lunk alarm. This is basically an alarm, yes an actual alarm with a light on the wall, that the staff sets off at the mere sound of either grunting or a weight hitting the floor (I will go more into this shortly). As they do allow you to bring 1 person in per day for free (one of the few good things PF offers) I have taken several people there and every one of them said they would not join solely based on this alarm. Its very annoying. Second, the grunting and weights. They have actual signs that say 'grunt free zone'. What is the point of this. When people lift weights they make sounds. It's a gym not the library. Also, if you drop a weight they will set off the alarm, then speak with you and even cancel your membership based on this. I don't mean dropping a weight from waist high, I am talking about mere inches. Basically if any sound is made by the weight as it touches the floor, LUNK ALARM! Third, as you can see, they like to dictate most of what you do at this place. They even dictate what you wear. Don't bother wearing a cut off. I was personally told I could not wear a cut off t shirt. Not a tank top, a cut off. Then when I challenged the manager to show me where it said that, he couldnt bc there is not policy of that. This guy was a control freak. The only free weights they have is dumbbells and they recently removed the heavier ones, once again alienating their customers who are serious about their time in the gym. The entire pitch of this place to its customers is 'a judge free zone' but they definitely judge you. Only not when your overweight or learning just when you are in shape and actually want to see some sort of significant gain. This place is a JOKE! Its really a women's gym (curves) that allows men. Do not be fooled by the price because honestly its not worth it. The icing on the cake for me was when I politely brought a few of these concerns to a girl behind the desk and her first response was ' Would you like to cancel?' WHAT! Let me start off this review by saying - I LOVE MY GYM! After reading the negative reviews on here, I really wanted to put up a positive review from someone that really loves the Stadium Drive Planet Fitness in Kalamazoo. First of all, I never thought in a million years that I would join a gym. I felt too self-conscious about going. I didn't want to feel out of place among all the in-shape fitness fanatics that I imagined filling every gym. Then, I started hearing about Planet Fitness from a few of my school friends that had joined. They talked about Planet Fitness being a "No Judgment Zone." I was intrigued, but also skeptical. It's one thing to say something - it's another to have that be the experience. I finally decided to go with one of my friends this past May as his guest. I wanted to see if this place lived up to its hype - both from my friends and from the Planet Fitness website. So, I went in and my friend gave me a tour... the free weight area, treadmills, ellipticals, arc trainers, exercise bikes, 30 minute circuit, the ab room, locker rooms - and also the massage chairs, Red Light therapy, and tanning beds. I was super impressed by the equipment, the friendly staff, the cleanliness, and by the patrons as well. What a diverse gym! Men and women of all sizes, ages, races, and ability statuses. My friend and I did the 30 minute circuit and 30 minutes on the elliptical. I didn't feel judged. I didn't feel self-conscious. I felt comfortable... and that felt good. I signed up for a membership that day. For only $10 a month, you can have unlimited access to all the equipment and the personal trainer, who offers classes and individual consultations. For $20 a month, you get those things, plus unlimited access to the massage chairs, Red Light Therapy, and tanning beds - plus you get unlimited guest privileges, which means you can bring in a buddy once per day. This works really nicely for me because my partner can come workout with me occasionally. Oh, one of the things about this gym that gets a lot of complaints is their 'No Lunk' policy - which I actually appreciate because this isn't an issue with the way that I work out. Planet Fitness prides itself on being a gym for everyone, not just gym rats. If people are making a lot of noise when lifting (i.e., grunting) or drop weights - really, making loud noises that are disruptive to other patrons, the employees will fire off the lunk alarm as a warning. The alarm doesn't go off often, but it will surprise you the first time. I've been on an incredible weight loss journey this year. From January 25th through today, I am down 75 lbs - and Planet Fitness has a lot to do with that. It gets me out of my little in-home gym and doing different activity. I know this place is there for me 24/7 and I love that. Plus, everything is purple - my fave! The employees were very helpful, once you sign up (which only took about 20 minutes) they'll give you an informative & quick tour of the gym, on which they'll show you the abundance of clean & functional equipment. I had a membership for about 4 months, and I enjoyed my experience every time I went for a workout. The machines were very clean, and there was a variety of easy-to-use machines that target just about any muscle you can think of. The purple and yellow color scheme makes the place look cool and professional. Although I never attended, the gym offered daily, FREE fitness programs. When I finally cancelled my membership (that was only $10 a month, by the way,) it only took about 1 minute and I wasn't patronized for doing so. The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because of the hypocritical "Judgement Free" attitude enforced by the gym. While the "No Lunk" policy is effective at keeping the gym environment stress-free for irregular gym goers, I couldn't help but think of how hypocritical the Planet Fitness "no judgement" motto really is. They blatantly label someone who simply wears a cut-off T-Shirt and has a large water bottle as a "lunk" - someone who goes to the gym for the "wrong" reasons. I couldn't help but think that if I had a bodybuilders body, that Planet Fitness themselves would have judged me. The "lunk alarm" is a literal siren that goes off whenever someone drops a weight or grunts too loudly. It acts as a signal for everyone to look and judge the person who set it off. read more

Been a member here almost a year and I'm ready to sign up for another year. It's always clean, the equipment is well maintained, and the staff is friendly. It's no frills, but it has everything I need - weight machines, free weights, and LOTS of cardio equipment. And I love that I see all sorts of people there - high school and college age on up to senior citizens - and all fitness levels. (Well, I guess I haven't seen anyone who looks like a professional body builder, but some appear to be college athletes keeping in shape.) I'm a little confused about the huge complaint letter re: the "lunk alarm". I have no idea why it bothers people so much. Most of the time I go in (mid to late evenings) it never goes off. When it does, it's not like everyone stops & looks at you and points at you. An alarm sounds and a blue siren light goes on for about 2 seconds. That's it, end of it - nobody seems to really care (although it can startle you). Geesh - the guy (first review here) went on about it so much it started to make me suspicious - maybe he's got a stake in another local gym? Anyway, if you're worried about the lunk alarm, don't be, it's pretty much a non-issue. This is definitely a good value compared to other "athletic clubs" and the fact that it's open 24/7 means I don't have to rush around after work trying to get to the gym. Maybe that's why I've stayed commited to it - I can always make it fit into my schedule. And the price is right, so it fits into my budget too! read more

I began my membership before the building was even finished. Here's what I've found 6 months later: 1) The dreaded lunk alarm story is true. It's incredibly ANNOYING. I don't care for meatheads myself, but I'd prefer to hear grunting and weights than the ear-piercing alarm. I even heard it while in the tanning beds, with the machine running. THAT is loud. 2) My biggest issue is with the employees. None of them are knowledgeable in either fitness or just basic mechanics of working for a gym. I received different answers from everyone that I met about every little detail of the gym. There is absolutely no consistency. I paid the extra 10 bucks per month to use the unlimited tanning. What I found was nearly every time I would go in, they would forget to actually clock in my time. Which meant I spent the time getting ready, applying lotion, only to have to get dressed again, get lotion all over my clothes, and go all the way out of the room and up to the counter. This happened to me almost EVERY SINGLE TIME I would use the beds. Extremely annoying, and when I pointed it out (once even BEFORE it happened), they apologized and said it wouldn't happen again...again. I got so used to it I started taking my phone in to call the front desk and say turn the damn timer on. Ridiculous. 3) The "Judgement-Free" zone theme is a total joke. It's a no-judgement zone...but they monitor what you wear. And they don't have scales to weigh yourself. I asked about them and they said it was part of the judgement free policy, to which I responded I didn't want THEM to look at my weight, only me. How is that judging? Isn't knowing your weight a pretty integral part of fitness? Furthermore, all the machines ask for your weight. Are they judging us? 4) After all these issues, I asked to speak to someone about the problems. They did not have comment cards, and the manager was 'unavailable'. Canceling the membership has been hell. Like I said, I signed up before the gym was finished so I signed a contract saying I could cancel at any time. But that's not true. One employee told me the bill pays for the past month. Then when I tried to stop it after my payment, another told me it pays forward. So then I needed to stop it before it paid out for the next month. The next employee told me do it by the 17th, the day the money is drawn out. I was in there when I was told to be, and then the next employee said I had to be there a week earlier in order for it to be effective?? So I ended up paying for 2 extra months I did not want. This gym is good if you only want to use treadmills and don't mind douchebag staff. You get what you pay for, it's 10 a month. What did I expect? read more

Planet Fitness is amazingly affordable, and I have been going there for many years now. There is never a wait for machines and there are a lot to choose from. My biggest complaints however - and I have registered them many times with no response - are about the stretching room. We come in there really sweaty from the ellipticals or arc trainers, and they have a HUGE ceiling fan in there which is very uncomfortable - and dangerous for stretching muscles. This is on top of the air conditioning! I have to wear a fleece jacket with a hood to protect my neck and back muscles. I've asked repeatedly if they could at least turn this giant ceiling fan on slow, but it is always on high blasting away. Also - the new mats aren't big enough for a child. You cannot do down dog or any standing yoga on them - they are half size so all my stretches have to be right on the floor, which gets dirty so fast from ourside shoes. So i will start off with the good about planet fitness. If you are new to the "gym atmosphere" and do not know what you are doing yet. Then this is a good place to get familiar with everything. It is a gym with a happy atmosphere. All of the staff is really nice. Actually, they are so nice that my roommates and I would play a game that consisted of when we entered and left the gym seeing if we could do so without receiving a greeting or goodbye. That is aside the point. The gym is fully of people that do not know what they are doing. Which is good if you are a newcomer but maybe not so good if you are experienced. The price is pretty hard to beat. It starts off at $10 a month for the minimalist plan. It is month by month without contract. If you are overweight then this is a great place to go. Seeing as that you will definitely not be alone. Now for the bad or indifferent. I have been going to this gym for about 8 months now. I started going when it opened up. I loved it at first. But I was also in the "learning" phase of working out. As time went on I grew very irritated with the "lunk alarm". Which is an alarm that goes off if you drop weights. And when I say drop weights, by that I mean making any noise at all with the weights. You have to literally set them down as quiet and soft as you can. There is also a terrible selection of free weights. I am now what you would call a "gym rat". I have learned quite a lot about weight lifting. I get the feeling, every time I go there, like I am being held back. Whether people are messing around on the machines/weights (trying to figure out how to use them) or if i simply cannot do my routine because I don't have heavy enough free weights (the dumbbells and curl bars only go up to 60 lbs) or the machine I need is not there. There is not even a bench press. Now some people will say I'm wrong but in actuality I am right. There are four Smith Machines. These are the closest thing you have to a bench press. Which is fine, but using these you are not building the stability muscles and therefore if you start to dumbbell press weights, you will be shaky and may injure yourself because of this. There is not a stair master, which i understand is not the biggest deal but it would be nice to have one. Also, you can not wear a cutoff shirt or bring a gallon full of water. It is considered "lunking" and forbidden. You can actually have your membership revoked for dropping weights or doing the two things I previously mentioned. All in all it depends on who you are, what your goals are and what your experience level is. If you are overweight or looking to learn the ins and outs of a gym, this is the place for you. But if you are experienced and really want to get a hardcore workout in. I highly recommend that you choose somewhere else read more
