I never thought I would be excited to go back to a gym, but I am. I have had many gym memberships in the past. I have been impressed by the pools, saunas, basketball courts, juice bars, and guess what I have never used? Yes-all of that. Hello What? I made the FALSE assumption that Planet Fitness was "janky", dirty, and had bad equipment because their prices were too good to be true. My daughter recently joined in Chicago. For a 20 year old it seemed like a great fit, UNTIL she sent us pictures and told us all about this gym. I was astounded at what she had to say, so I signed up for a membership in Shawnee. No contract, no commitment, and $25 a month for their best membership so I had nothing to lose (but $25)! Today I had a Hydro-massage, got a tan, walked on a treadmill, and lifted some weights on the machines. It was a DELIGHT! I am astounded. This place has SO many machines, and different areas to work out. There were no douchebags, no "extras" I won't use. It was just chill. I cannot believe it took me so long to realize how cool Planet Fitness truly is. I'm SOLD. read more

I've had a Black Card membership at Planet Fitness for a year and a half and have just visited the Shawnee location. I've been happy with my gym experience. Most of the staff have been friendly and I think the gym is clean in general. Maybe a little bit better on the mat areas in the corners would be good. But the machines are almost always in good working order and if they break down they tend to get fixed quickly. They are good about keeping the cleaning stations filled with paper towels and sanitizing solution and hand sanitizer. They have a lot of varied cardio equipment and nautilus and cable machines. They also have a decent amount of free weights which I primarily use. I enjoy the hydro beds are great! Overall I enjoy my membership and it's affordable even with the Black Card membership. read more

Worst gym ever! At least once per week nobody shows up in the morning to open the place. Went today and waited for a half hour and nobody showed up. Literally 2 bars on the crowd meter and all the machines are in use. Like literally anything you want; smith machines all taken, dumbbells, can't even fit in there. Equipment is constantly breaking and can take up to 6 months for them to fix it; especially the last half of the year. They have 200 treadmills for some reason though and really only about 10% of them are being used at any given point in time. read more

Working out here is a blast. This is not my home location, however, it is a wonderful substitute. This is a large location that has plenty of machine options. There are treadmills, ellipticals and bikes galore. I am a personal fan of the specialized "rooms" at this location, such as 12 minute abs, hips and abs, 30 minute extreme workout, etc. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because a lot of the machines are not updated. The machines at my home gym are the latest models and that is my personal preference. Even with the older model machines, this is a gym that I will continue to frequent. First of all Planet Fitness claims to be a "judgement free zone", which may be true if you're not actually trying to workout. My company pays for my gym membership at PF however I travel with my job and even with the black card which allows you to use any planet fitness nationwide, there are stipulations that only allow you to visit a gym that isn't your home gym 8 times per month, so after a little over a week, I have to travel to another gym across town after every 8 uses... ridiculous. If you make noise while working out you set off the lunk alarm and get warned, you cannot deadlift, you cannot drop weights, and you cannot wear tank tops. It's a gym... weights are heavy, and I want to make gains not maintain. PF needs to review its policies and make it judgement free for everyone, not just a select few who aren't interrelated in body building. I contacted PF several times via email and phone and never received a response. read more

Don't waste your money!!!! it's dirty....and the Manager Brendon Hudson is even more ridiculous than the gym itself! if he doesn't like your looks, he treats you like crap and finds a way to destroy your membership! He will lie until he succeeds in getting you out of there with no way to contact Corporate. He will say there was a problem with you several years back, but continued to take the monthly and annual fees for 3+ more years! Then tells you to go! Ridiculous.....that's what I'm saying! Not sure whom the GM of this PF is... but all of the staff is always so polite and, beyond that, PERSONABLE! Tons of equipment, tons of space, and generally not so busy that I have to wait or can't find another machine to work whatever body part I'm working that day... still, it DOES get busy at times- Smith machines fully occupied, benches or cable machines in use, etc. - which is likely the case in any good gym upon occasion. I was able to prepare for and compete in a bodybuilding competition at this gym, and didn't have to go to a more expensive free-weights gym for the same effect. The team there is incredible, and though the machines occasionally need maintenance (which will be the case at ANY gym), you can't beat the staff, variety, and price... Still a newcomer to this gym but so far, I'm pretty pleased. It's just after the new year and so usage is really high but I've still not once had a problem getting a machine when I've wanted it and I tend to be there around 5pm (aka peak gym time). So that alone is a huge win. There are just tons of treadmills, ellipticals, bikes etc that you should almost always get to use what you want. Weight lifting equipment might be a little more likely to have an issue, but there is still a good variety and number there that I've not really had issues. I didn't get the leg press machine I wanted but there was another I could use that gets the same job done, so no worries. Open 24/7 with ample parking, you can't really beat that convenience. The staff have all been really nice and friendly so far and check in is always quick and easy. The locker room is nice and seems to have plenty of lockers (again, there during peak time and never have an issue). There are individual showers if you want to clean up there which is nice. If I had a complaint, it would be that the air freshener in the locker room smells like cinnamon rolls or some other bakery deliciousness, and well, that just seems rude considering we are at the gym... But at least it smells pretty decent in there instead of like sweaty gym socks, so I guess I can live with it... I like the equipment options, though I wouldn't mind an old school stair climber as opposed to the moving stair style ones (just a personal preference), but there is a machine that is a cross between an elliptical and stair machine that I can use instead if need be. There are tons of TVs all set to various stations so you have plenty to choose from while doing cardio. The machines all program to them so you can get the sound (so it appears, I haven't actually bothered with that whole set up, but glad it is there). The gym is big, filled with lots of equipment, the staff is nice and keep the place clean, the membership price is great ($10/month for a basic membership), and they are open 24/7. Can't really complain about any of that. read more

I was scammed. I went into the club in June to cancel my account because I'm moving. Well a guy claiming to be the assistant manager had me sign a sheet of paper and said everything was taken care of. Well today I get a $42.00 withdrawal from my account. I called the club and they told me they have no record of me cancelling ever and all the managers are FEMALES! Apparently i was also suppose to sign on the card pad as well. I was never asked. Now you can imagine how insanely frustrated I am and they are refusing to return my money. I will never use planet fitness again and I'll be sure to share the scam story with everyone i know. I love Planet Fitness. Clean and spacious facilities, more than enough equipment, and dirt cheap. I should caveat that this 5-star rating isn't compared to a Lifetime Fitness type of facility that offers more of a club environment; it's based on what I need out of a gym without feeling bad for not being there 5 times a week to get my money's worth. With the black card membership for $20/mo, I have taken advantage of the various massage beds/chairs they offer, as well as the "Total Body Enhancement" machine. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably just stick with the $10/mo basic membership, as I get the massages to make myself feel better about spending the extra money each month. Benefits I'm not taking advantage of include bringing a friend with me for free (unlimited), using other Planet Fitness locations, and tanning. read more

Machines and plentiful and I've never had to wait for one. They have a great full body 40 min circuit, a stretching area and clean stations everywhere so you can wipe the machines down. I have the black membership so I can tan, use the hydo beds (massage) and massage chairs, so worth the extra money. Also I can use the total body workout machine which is a 12 min session. They have classes that you can call ahead and get on the list. Plenty of staff to help you out. Friendly no judgement environment. read more

The gym itself is pretty nice, but don't be fooled by their marketing claim of only $10 or $20 a month...There are several hidden fees that I was misled about. It will end up costing you a $60 annual membership fee, which they split up, don't verbally tell you about and then stick in the small print of your agreement so you can't dispute it when it hits your bank statement. When I questioned the fees, the gym staff was EXTREMELY condescending and rude. To make matters worse, the corporate Planet Fitness office, upon seeing my negative rating on the Planet Fitness FB page, acted all concerned and then requested I send them a separate email explaining what happened. So I did. They ignored it. So I sent several emails asking what the status of my refund request was. I finally got a response declining a refund because (you guessed it) the fees were (hidden) in my agreement. I don't think they ever had any intention of refunding me. I think they side barred with me for show on social media. So yeah, I'm cancelling my membership (a $58 cancellation fee, by the way) out of principle. read more

This is a good gym. I went as a guest and liked the experience. It was clean, bright, and open. The staff was friendly, and there was plenty of equipment, especially treadmills. I did have to wait on some of the equipment, but definitely no wait on the treadmills. I also liked the numerous TV's to watch as you walk or run your legs off. There was much of the same equipment you'd find in a gym, but there was some that I hadn't seen before. That may be because it had been years since I stepped into a gym, but I was still impressed by them. I particularly liked the section that had the different exercise equipment and the routine to follow. I'll make a couple more guest visits and then decide on a membership. For $10/month, I have no real complaints. I'm not a gym novice. I've been a member of many gyms over my 37 years, and I am comfortable working out in public, taking classes, using weights, etc. I joined this gym because I'm training for the Chicago marathon and I need access to treadmills on a 24/7 basis. I don't need classes (I do yoga elsewhere), so it was pointless for me to join a more expensive gym. This gym is brand new (I think they opened on January 1 or right before that). I've never been to any other Planet Fitness locations, but this one is HUGE. They have at least 60 treadmills, 20 ellipticals, 20 bikes, plus Cybex machines and 4 of the good stair-steppers. They also have weight machines and free weights. Their locker rooms are nice, and they have three showers in the women's locker room, plus three changing rooms in case you're not comfortable changing in the main locker area. It has a high ceiling and a very open feel. There are 26 flat-screen televisions in front of the cardio equipment, with 13 different channels available. They also have a spa if you are a Black Card Member ($20/month instead of $10/month) but I'm not paying for that yet. This location is still under construction and they haven't finished the spa area. Unless you want to tan or use hydro-massage, there's really no need to pay the extra $10/month for the Black Card. Since it's the beginning of the year and this is a brand new gym, it's VERY busy, but I've never had to wait for a treadmill. My only complaint about this gym is the annoying purple EVERYWHERE. Every single piece of equipment is made specifically for Planet Fitness, so EVERYTHING IS PURPLE. I think it makes the gym seem tacky, but I also think that's what they're going for. They tout their "Judgement-Free Zone" and it truly is. I know a lot of people who would be annoyed by this gym, because there are people who have never worked out, don't know how to use the equipment, don't know proper gym etiquette, etc. However, for $10/month, I can overlook those people and also appreciate that everyone has to start somewhere on their journey to being healthy. So if you can get past the horrifying amount of purple and a lot of people who are new to working out, this is a great bargain for $10/month. read more

The location, hours of operation, and judgement-free zone make Planet Fitness-Shawnee a great spot to get your workout in! I'm still a gym noob. That's no secret. So, when it comes to gyms, fitness centers, workout facilities...whatever you want to call it, I'm always learning something new as I journey to optimum health. I've never been one to frequent the gym, but something about Planet Fitness-Shawnee just pulls me right in. I never feel judged. And, I can do my workouts in peace! I hardly come in during the day, so I can't comment on what the environment is like during that time period (although, from driving past it during the day, it looks pretty busy). At night, it's calm, relaxed, and not busy at all; there's never a wait for a machine! And, I get to witness the staff cleaning! Yay, for cleanliness! I just love it! General: Planet Fitness-Shawnee is open 24 hours. It is rather spacious. There's cardio, weights, and space to do your own thing. There's lockers available. The building is clean. Everything is purple. They have free tootsie rolls. They also have fun events like pizza night. ;) Memberships: When I signed up, there were a few different types of memberships you could sign up for. The basic memberships get you access to the gym and fitness trainings. The Black Card membership gets you the same amenities plus access to the Black Card Spa and other perks, like the ability to bring in a guest for free, or ability to visit other Planet Fitness locations for free. Black Card Spa: This spa area consists of 2 massage chairs, 2 hydro lounger beds, 2 hydro lounger chairs, total body enhancement light therapy, and a bunch of tanning booths. Note that guests won't have access to these facilities as they are only for paying Black Card members. My favorite thing to do is play games while on the hydro loungers, specifically Minesweeper. That game drives me nuts, but its a fun way to relax after a workout. Fun Fact: As of today, April 5th, 2016, I finally beat Minesweeper...on beginner level. Only took me a month, LOL :D In the past, I wasn't much for working out but I actually truly enjoy going to Planet Fitness-Shawnee. 10/10 definitely recommend. read more

Planet fitness on Shawnee Mission has a very bad customer service associate. Went to the gym there one night to get a quick workout in with my mother and when we enter we were having trouble with the app and asked on of the associates for help and she decided to turn away and go to the back. At first when we arrived and we talked to the associate working there at the time she decided to let it be known that she called on of her coworkers a slacker and decided to say that he was lazy.With having experience in customer service for 2 years I think that the statement that was being made in front of guests was very inappropriate and unprofessional. I then proceeded to walk through the gym and when I realized I forgot my AirPods in the car I told the same associate that I was leaving to get my AirPods from my car and would return back and asked if that was alright. And she said that was fine. And when I came back she confronted me saying that me and my mother got into the gym for free. But for a fact we both knew that she was lying because before we went into the gym we scanned our keychains and asked if we were go to go on through and she said yes. This said associate decided to accuse me of not being a member when I have been a part of this gym for the past four years!!! I feel very violated, disappointed, and dissatisfied with my time at this gym. read more

In the KC are this is the newest one and honestly I was disappointed, it isn't as nice as some of the older location and the squat racks are not as good as the others they have a weird suspension system that I've never seen before which is good for lighter weight lifts but not when you're squatting heavy read more

I do wish they had weights that went heavier on the machines and the Dumbbells. Three kids, and 80 pounds later, it's time to get my butt in gear and get some weight off. I read and read and read reviews about Planet Fitness before taking a short drive from Bonner Springs to check them out. I went last Sunday evening around 6pm. They were busy, but not ridiculously. There were two other people there to get the tour. Our "tour guide" was a very young girl, who was so quiet when talking I couldn't hear her. She VERY briefly explained the items in the gym, and the entire tour of this facility took about 5 minutes. One person decided not to sign up and left, and myself and the other person asked to walk around again and check everything out. I ended up signing up for the $20 per month plan. This gym has everything I could ask for and more. For $20 a month, I can use level 3 and level 4 tanning beds (which would cost $100+ at a tanning salon), total body enhancement red light therapy, hydro massage, massage chairs, tons of cardio equipment and weights. I worked out Sunday, and worked out again today. I like the "judgement free" ideals, and I feel VERY comfortable working out here. I don't feel like anyone is staring at me in particular, and anyone who does happen to look in my direction always offers a smile. The staff could be a little more helpful. I got no directions when using the tanning beds, or the total body enhancement booth. They don't tell you how to go about getting on "the list" for those things either. They just kind of throw you out there, leaving you on your own. Im not afraid to ask questions, so I just bug the crap out of them until I feel comfortable. May not be okay for some other people, but for me it works just fine. I feel like for the price of this place, you can't beat it. read more

Love the price and the convenience because this gym is close to home. The workout equipment is great....just CANNOT STAND working out in a gale force wind!!! They have the giant ceiling fan cranked up so high it's uncomfortable to workout in those conditions. If anybody has been charged more than one time in a month you need to file an attorney general complaint, it is free and easy. It takes maybe five minutes. Planet fitness charged my account four times in one month in Feb. it is now Aug. and nothing has been done to correct the matter. They asked for a copy of my bank statement, I obliged, and still nothing. I have talked to at least (2) managers who have assured me the matter will be taken care of. When nothing was done I went back to talk to a manager and nothing. They have even gone as far as to tell me that they don't have a manager at the Shawnee, OK location that someone has to come down from Tulsa to help with the store. Here it is almost seven months and nothing has been done. This place is a joke and a scam. I will never use planet fitness again and will tell everyone I know what this place is. Now I have to pay $26 for a stop payment after reading other review where cancelation didn't event work. Extremely Sketchy!!! read more
