A Health Hazard Disguised as a Hospital…read more This was my first and only experience with Mercy Hospital under Dignity Health, and I can say without exaggeration that I would prefer to go to an unlicensed facility before returning here. My 75-year-old relative was admitted to the emergency department due to a mental health crisis. What we encountered was appalling: the room was filthy, littered with trash, floors unmopped, no bedding, walls stained, and an overwhelming stench filled the air. This was not an isolated issue--both rooms we were moved through were in similarly unsanitary condition. While the hospital often responds to public reviews citing privacy concerns, I found this ironic. As a licensed psychologist, I was shocked by the complete disregard for HIPAA. Conversations about treatment were held openly, with no effort to preserve the dignity or confidentiality of patients in crisis. I visited two different bathrooms on two different floors, and both reeked of urine. I'm not sure how a hospital could maintain a level of cleanliness worse than a gas station restroom, but somehow this facility managed it. Despite being cities away, I felt I had no choice but to remove my relative from their care. The conditions were simply unpalatable and not conducive to anyone's healing--particularly someone experiencing a mental health episode. *Highlights* (because credit is due): The security staff were very kind and helpful Phone calls were answered promptly Medical staff were personable and kind They showed compassion toward patients with mental health conditions However, compassion alone cannot make up for the deplorable conditions and lack of basic patient privacy. I sincerely hope Dignity Health re-evaluates the standard of care provided at this hospital--especially for vulnerable populations. "If you are ever in a crisis call 911 and ask for a different hospital intake."

Came back in and said she had the flu. They never checked her temperature, ears, throat, etc. they didn't do a physical at all to assess her. The dr didn't give me any care instructions, just that she was good to go In 3 days. And that she prescribed Tylenol/motrin. Then she walked out. Well my daughter didn't improve, even after 7 days! she will be going to see her actual doctor for a true diagnosis. Went to see her regular Dr. she has pneumonia!! As we approached the building, an employee slammed out of an employee entrance and nearly hit me. I jumped back and she mumbled an irritated apology. Then, we went inside. A bored receptionist told us that they would not be able to see my friend because she would need an x-ray and they don't do that on the weekends. Therefore, she said there were only two options: we could wait until Monday or we to the ER. She had no solutions that involved even helping my friend with the obvious pain she was in. Instead, we went to Golden Valley Health Center and they got her in immediately. She left there in under half an hour with a pain medication prescription, cray paperwork, and a sling. I just did not see the quality of concern or care at Get Well that one expects from healthcare providers.

No masks. All had to pass through the receptionist who just didn't care. All nurses calling patients in didn't say anything either.

At each visit he listens to my questions and concerns and he takes the time to explain what to expect (in simple, plain language) and options. I have never felt rushed and have the greatest confidence in his skills as a surgeon. The staff is not friendly or engaging. They do the bare minimum. The feeling I'm left with is that I'm an inconvenience; even the nurse acts like she can't wait to get out of the room. It's not uncommon to call and immediately be put on hold without any greeting or acknowledgment. And if a message is left, the call is NEVER returned in a timely manner if at all. Also the voice message says they're on the other line even if their office is closed. Case in point, I had a knee manipulation done on Thursday midday. We live 1 hour 10 minutes away. On the way home, post procedure, I got a text that my pain meds were being filled in Merced. I immediately called the office and was put on hold as mentioned earlier. Eventually someone did pick up (which in my experience isn't always the case) and I explained my situation; have left Merced already and on my way home. Asked if they could transfer the rx to the pharmacy closer to my home. Was told they would look into it and get back to me. 3 hours later there was no response and their office was closing in 30 mins for the day. I started calling and my calls kept going to voicemail. By 5 pm I thought I would try to manage the pain as best as I could and call the next day. Called on Friday and kept getting the voicemail so I called the surgical center only to learn that Dr B's office was closed Friday for Juneteenth. This meant no pain meds until Monday at the earliest. Not a good situation. So I left a voice message asking to speak to the office manager Monday morning. Monday morning came and went; no returned call so I called again after their lunch break. Spoke to the office manager who at no time acknowledged or apologized for my experience but was informed that they had a lot of messages to go through. What I would like for an outcome so that other patients don't experience this is the following: 1. Staff go through customer service training. 2. All calls answered with some sort of salutation before being put on hold. 3. All calls on hold are monitored and someone checking in occasionally to let the caller know they're aware of the wait. 4. Messages are triaged with more time sensitive calls (aka recent procedure) getting top priority. 5. Any patient who's had a procedure in the last 24 hours gets a response same day as their call with a description of next steps. Also be aware that the office uses air fresheners. So be prepared if you have an olfactory sensitivity. Needless to say, once I finish up my appointments for this current recovery I'll be changing offices. And I'm 100% confident that this office won't care.
