I live in Boulder Creek and have visited the Mountain Feed Store and found it very expensive. My other options aren't very good so I didn't have high expectations on my first visit. Well, I was blown away. This garden center has everything + the unusual. Vibrant, lush and humming with bees and butterflies. I NEVER see bees hanging out at other garden centers like I did here. The owner, Tom was there and he was running here and there assisting and answering questions. I saw 3 people come in while i browsed and they all left satisfied having had their questions answered. I was looking for certain types of flowering plants to go in a dry area and he was beyond helpful in pointing out options. I left with $70 of flowers and felt I got a reasonable deal. I wouldn't say it's cheap, but it's competitive pricing compared to other boutique or mid sized garden centers. I noticed there was no chemically kind of fertilizer smell either. read more

As i bought my new home in December, it was time to add some lively amenities to my home. I needed to find my most desired plant (lamb's ear) and got a six pack which are spreading and thriving in my garden. I bought verbena as they are gorgeous. I bought butterfly bush as well, i saw some dangling succulents, so i bought banana shape plant. I was so infatuated with the numerous amount of plants and flowers i almost bought a tree!!!! Lol. Horrible customer service! I was talked into getting a moisture meter by I'm guessing the owner and the very same day I went home and used it on about 5 plants and the tip broke off. I took it back to him a couple days later and he said he wouldn't take it back, that I had probably stuck it in the ground too hard. Well, I didn't and was quite honestly completely taken aback that he would not let me return it. I will absolutely not be back. And how stupid to permanently lose a customer over a $10 moisture meter? Really not smart for a small business in a small town. I'm happy to spend my money at Mountain Feed and Farm down the street! read more

Jan Nelson is the owner of Plant Works and is very helpful and knowledgeable. She writes a weekly gardening column in the Press-Banner, and I had emailed her some gardening questions last summer, to which she responded kindly and quickly (I'm a novice). Finally made it in to her store to get some ornamental plants and was pleasantly surprised with her reasonable prices. Most gallon plants are $10 or less, and she has a large selection of shade plants, which is so important for us mountain gardeners. Will definitely be back as I clear more of my yard to expand my garden. read more

I am a beginning gardener and went there to buy some plants. I wanted to buy some herbs and saw some cilantro and dill that didn't look great. I asked the owner if they were ok, and he said if I pruned them they would bush out and be fine. I bought them and then did some internet research on them, to discover that they had already bolted and were about to go to seed. If you are a newbie gardener, this place is the opposite of helpful. I stopped in here today to get some potting soil and a palm tree. The owner, Tom, was helpful, knowledgeable, and fun to talk to. He helped me pick out the perfect plants for my needs along with a great planter box. He helped me load everything into my car, a true gentlemen. Which I feel is lost nowadays. If you go to one of those big stores they just watch you struggle trying to load the heavy soil into your car. I could tell he has a love and passion for what he does, which makes it a real pleasure to shop at Plant Works. I will definitely shop here again in the future. read more

Lots available and some of the veg containers were already fruiting...that is great for us that live in sun challenged foresty areas in the valley. Tom is the owner and the gentleman that is there running the day-to-day operation. For whatever reason the ownership of this place is an ongoing "debate" in the valley. Anyways... Tom is a great guy. Love talking gardening with him. The place is not a fancy "boutique" like other locations in the area, but more of an old school nursery. It's all about the plants not the hippy chic that is currently all the hype... Vegetables, ornamentals, ground cover, I get it all from them. Regularly their selection of tomatoes, peppers, beans and items in the cucumber family surpass that of other places in the area. I grew over 15 different strains of tomato last season from them alone. For peppers they have everything from golden bells to ghost peppers. For a pepper fanatic like me it was heaven! The prices are more than fair and I have received numerous bulk deals on plants, soil and containers. If you are just getting started or an established gardener check this place out! read more

I paid Jan to come out to my house about 10 years ago to advise me what to plant in a very shady spot. She advised Hop Seed Bushes which I later found out from at least 8 different people at 4 different Nurseries and the web, was definitely NOT the plant for a very shady spot. Now I get to dig up all those plants and start over. She just sold me what she had in stock and took the extra money for her worthless advice. I wouldn't trust Jan to water my lawn. read more

This place is fun! As a beginner gardener, Tom has been super helpful in helping me find things I can't kill easily, and bring things I've thought were toast back to life. Prices are pretty reasonable. He won't sell you junky plants, and provides advice about the right kind of fertilizer, mulch, etc for the type of soil you have. They have a great selection, but like anywhere else they run out of things. read more

I recently bought a home in Ben Lomond very close to the Plant Works, having moved from the westside of Santa Cruz, and I knew I would need a new local nursery for starting my new garden. I slowly explored all the local nurseries in the SLV and Scotts Valley, finding the niche within each one. There are a lot of great places out there, but what what struck me as unique about Plant Works wasn't just the huge variety of plants but the expertise provided by the owner (Tom). His knowledge is so extensive and he will readily dispense helpful facts about whatever plant I happen to be buying. He also changed my approach to watering with the introduction of a moisture-meter to monitor soil. Furthermore, I once mistakenly bought a Gravenstein apple tree, and he let me return it (I chose to get more plants in exchange, of course). I have bought a lot of plants from him now, and my garden is growing in wonderfully. Tom's laid-back attitude, helpfulness, and the down-to-Earth vibe of the place make it my favorite local nursery. read more
