We love this nursery . On our first visit we bought some outdoor plants and house plants and asked for the veggies . The lady said to come early on Friday for new veggie plants . We did and the veggies we got are thriving . Super friendly people and knowledgeable, too. The plants all look super healthy and it is a joy to look around . "They dont accomadate to customers." My experience was okay, it was my first time there and was impressed by the layout and the selection of cultivars the nursey had. While shopping for grasses I couldnt locate a wagon, meaning I had 4 grasses in 3.5 'inch pots on both hands. I thought i'd walk to the counter so they could hold them, (like every other nursery I been to.) When I approached a lady with glasses by the counter I asked if she could hold the grasses up here so I could continue to shop around. (Ive been to many nurseries and they usually let you.) I know this isnt ROSS and can't put things on layaway at a nursery, but at least hold them so I can PURCHASE them. I did let her know I was going to purchase the grasses but she responded with, " We can hold the grasses but you can't make this a reoccuring thing , plus what if another person wants them? We can hold them but I wouldn't reccomend you." I was going to buy more plants but after that exchanged I didnt feel comfortable nor I felt welcomed. Given that this was my first time at this nursery I will say that they have great selection in perennials. Unfortunately, I will not be returning. read more

It's hard to decide where to start... Have lived in SC our whole lives, so (attempted to) patronize this place on & off for what seems like forever. Unfortunately, it's become uncomfortably apparent that the majority of the workers here don't follow the custom standards of customer service. Specifically: multiple times when seeking assistance with plant information/choices, OR EVEN STANDING IN A LINE AT THE CHECKOUT, employees consistently "overlook" or literally look directly past (I'm talking finish helping the customer to my left, literally skip me, and start checkout out the customer BEHIND ME IN LINE ). I wish this had been an isolated incident but, without fail, about 90% of the time I/we have been here they make it beyond apparent they don't want to even acknowledge us, let alone want our business.... They're just unfriendly As for the selection... it usually errs on the side of miss (versus hit).... They tend to carry the same stock on repeat... Prices are comparable to, say, San lo downtown? I mean, lol, they're def nothing to go running for... but when u need a plant, ya need a plant. read more

I went to five nurseries and big-box stores in the Capitola/Santa Cruz area looking for a good selection of trees. Far West has the best overall selection, reasonable prices, and very knowledgeable helpful staff. The inventory they have is very well cared for. They do not have every possible tree, but I would give this place a try if you're in the market for something different than the standard stuff you find at the big-box stores. read more

I've purchased many plants from Far West Nursery through the years so I returned there to find a Japanese Maple for my very small backyard that would be appropriate for the sun exposure. To be fair, they have an amazing collection to choose from. After much discussion with a helpful employee, I purchased a small tree on sale (25% off) that was originally $147. We discussed the amount of sunlight it can handle so after getting it home I paid special attention over the next few days to see if it was going to be too much for the tree. I decided it would be and returned the tree to the store to replace it with a small evergreen. I purchased it on September 7 and tried to exchange It on September 13. The receipt says nothing about returns so I was quite disappointed that they would only exchange it within 3 days. The clerk referred me to a VERY small sign at checkout out that I did not see. It had not been removed from the pot, looked just as it did when I purchased it. I'm very disappointed that the return policy was not more visible, that it was not on the receipt or discussed with me when I checked out with my $200+ order. I will not return there - Franz Witte Nursery or Du-Rite In Meridian will be my go-to from now on. read more

We went there a couple weeks ago looking to replace a bush that we thought wasn't going to make it through the transplant. Looking pretty sad. Fortunately We were coached and helped by the staff to bring her back to life. In addition, they used a book to look up our issue. They shared the book/catalog with us so we were able to order one and be able self/help our own situations . Super helpful and friendly people there. They didn't try to sell or push into a replacement bush which is noble and appreciated . read more

Okay, so if you're looking for one of the largest nurseries in Santa Cruz, this may be it. In fact, I'd go so far as to say this is the best kept Botanical secret in the immediate Santa Cruz vicinity. Bamboo Giant is pretty rad too, but that's in Aptos, and I digress. Far West is a little off the beaten path; you have to access it from Frontage Road between 41st Ave and Soquel Ave. Anyway, you can find it, I've got faith in you. Once you arrive, expect to be blown away by the massive 2.5 acre lot, packed with plants and trees of all shapes and sizes. I can tell you if I were going to begin a new landscaping project, or even just searching for a few house plants, this is where I'd come. I deducted a star because one of the aloe plants I bought pretty much up and died within a month of my purchase. I thought about calling up and getting a new one but it was so cheap in the first place I just let it go. Meanwhile our other plant is thriving, and we love the pots we purchased here. read more

One of the guys I talked too, maybe he is the owner, is extremely knowledgeable and gave some really good insights. Plus it's just a few minutes drive to Capitola beach so it makes a nice day trip, visiting both on the same day. read more

This is one of my favorite nurseries in Santa Cruz. They carry pesticide free milkweed, which are always in good shape. Their staff members have worked there forever and are super knowledgeable. The quality of plants is always great too. I love this place! read more

Apparently idiots like me do not have enough sense to stay away from places they are treated poorly because I went back. Yup. Three times, in fact, just to be sure. First time, just talked to Justin. He was nice and knowledgable. He took his time explaining about the plants I wanted. Next time, I actually purchased plants, and again great customer service from a lady whose name I've forgotten. The final time I went with a friend of mine and she bought several plants. Justin helped us again. Such an improvement from my prior experience, so yes, I'm lovin' on Far West right now. Did I post a review too quickly the time I had such bad customer service. Maybe. And I seriously thought about deleting the bad review, but it was my experience. Did Far West read the review and improve or does the person mentioned in my previous bad review simply not represent the true service spirit of Far West? I don't know. Bottom line, still a previous bad experience but the more current ones were nice, and what should happen. I got plants I truly like that are prospering where I planted them. read more

Not the first time at Far West that I felt like if you're not a contract landscaper with an account there, you just don't matter. I agree with previous reviewers that the staff needs to come down off their high horses. I recently went in looking to buy roses in 5 gallon containers. The sales person at the "tiki booth" register completely ignored me as she warmly chatted with a landscape guy about his dog. She finally stopped to take a breath and responded to my question about their roses. She said, "They are all over there by that tree," waving her finger in a general direction to the far edge of the property. Uh, yes, thanks ... but the entire property is lined with trees ... which tree might that exactly be that you are pointing to?????? No assistance provided. No helpful information given. Is there any chance she might be interested in what type of rose I am looking for or, for that matter, how many containers, or to show me other plant options? Eventually I located their rose stock and looked for a good while studying my options - then choosing to purchase nothing. As I walked empty-handed back to my car, I deliberately passed her once again (still loudly chatting and laughing with the landscape dude) to see if it even mattered that I was leaving without a purchase. Obviously, it didn't. I then headed over to the Garden Center at ProBuild and after getting all my questions answered dropped a cool $100+ on five rose shrubs. read more

Over the past six months, I have gone to Far West Nursery 3 times, trying to give them a chance because of their native plant selection. However, I won't be back. Each and every time I went, I was virtually ignored by the staff working there; treated shortly like I was a disturbance when I would ask a question. The attitude was anything but helpful. After a recent third and final visit, I am sure I will spend my money elsewhere. It was not a busy day in particular, with several staff restocking plants, watering, but not helping customers directly. I mingled in the succulent section for over 10 minutes without a single person asking if I needed some help. Once I decided to take a more direct approach and find someone, I asked a gentleman for help. He curtly replied that he would check on it in a few minutes "when he had time"; all the while there were other employees around who he could have helped me. I decided to leave after futilely waiting around another five minutes. Total waste of time. I went straight to my favorite local nursery afterward, where I was welcomed, informed about some cool new garden facts (as usual), and on my way to planting 2 fruit trees; feeling happy and good about spending my money there. Of all things I appreciate in a company, excellent, personable customer service takes the cake. Far West Nursery could seriously benefit from some staff training on the art of good customer service as they are completely lacking in that area. read more

One of the better nurseries I've been to in Santa Cruz. It's a really big lot and their selection changes from time to time. Their prices are pretty competitive from the places around the area, unless home depot or orchard supply has a big sale. The staff are pretty helpful if you talk to someone that isn't the watering guy. read more

My experience with a staff member and supervisor was dishonest, offensive, and disorganized. Poor communication regarding plant inventory that resulted in a time wasting trip to the nursery followed by a dishonest claim by a staff member regarding prior communication of plant availability. A second incident involved poor management of the handling of industry clientele at the hand of a supervisor. Overall the supervisor was misinformed, offensive, and disorganized. Dark behind the scene undertones going on over here. Will never do business here again or refer associates to this nursery. Sierra Azul and San Lorenzo Garden Center are better choices. read more
