Needed extra cash so I decided to visit this consignment store. I was told that they give cash on the spot... good deal. The drawback is that they only accept casual clothing. The brand is entered into the system to determine the amount they're will give. The second drawback is the selection of clothing is surprisingly disappointing. I saw torn Levi's selling for $12.00. Went to their Summer Fashion show last night and it was great! The models did an awesome job showing off the current trends and the DJ even had the emcee moving to the music. Once the show was compete, it took them no time to get the racks back in place for people to shop. In season, gently used, name brand clothing for teens and 20s. It's a place for my continuous growing teenager. I like it for it's prices and she likes it because she can find cute name brand items for much less. It's like most discount clothing stores where it's a HIT or MISS after sorting through tops and bottoms. I've tired selling some of my clothes here and they said it's out dated, too old, and not in season. Oh well at least I tired and just took them to Goodwill. I like the option of trying different name brand jeans in one place and seeing what fits well with your shape. The employees are nice and they have a reward system now all electronically no longer need a card for every $10 you purchase you used to get a stamp. I love Platos Closet! Any time I need to get some new clothes but don't want to spend too much money, I come here! It is a very student friendly budget, and their selection is pretty descent. The store is a bit crowded in space, but other than that it's usually pretty clean and easy to navigate their clothing sections. today I brought in a big bag of name brand clothes of all kinds (tank tops, dresses, shorts, sweats, long sleeves, jeans, and swimsuits) they only exepted about 5 things and told me that there were o ly looking for summer clothes, when half the stuff is warm weather clothes. NEVER shopping or bring stuff here again because they never except clothes. Also most of the clothes I brought in were 2 years to current day old all in great condition (no holes, stains or warn out) some of the clothes I brought in have never been warn before and a lot was the same style of alot of clothes that they are selling. DO NOT bring clothes here expecting to make money from your items because you wont. They are not as excepting of your items as they say in their adds. DO NOT COME HERE WITH THE INTENTIONS OF MAKING MONEY. You will be disappointed. If you have old stuff you want to sell go to a site like ebay or mercari and just sell it yourself. However if you have old stuff you were just going to get rid off this is a good option to see if you can make a few bucks off of some stuff before donating it. I'd like to start off my review by saying that reviews, by their nature, are ENTIRELY subjective. When I was in the hospitality industry, I often heard people cite a statistic that people are 3 times more likely to leave a review somewhere or tell someone a story about a BAD experience they had than they are if they had a GREAT experience. So everyone should take that into consideration if you're coming to Yelp in order to determine whether to shop here. Resale shops are just like thrift stores that take donations (except obviously better for people who are looking to declutter, because they have the *potential* to make some money on stuff that they were trying to get rid of anyway-- which is also a REALLY important thing for people who come into Plato's Closet to keep in mind). You can potentially find something amazing that is value priced because you were in the right place at the right time. You can also potentially get paid more money than you expected on some things that you are looking to sell. Do not come here looking to "make money". They have margins, they're a resale shop. They have to pay rent, hourly wages, and utilities. They're not running a charity, they're providing a service. All that being said, the garment selection process is extremely subjective and could be based not only upon the actual value that the store can hope to sell the item to a buyer for, but also based on the individual who is inspecting your items. It could come down to something as simple as whether the person who is at the register has a good vibe about you. That's just human nature, and that is a completely impossible thing to avoid. If you're going in there, or ANY resale shop, for that matter, to sell, you can't act indignant if they have no interest in your items. Either try again a different day if you think that the person making the selections was wrong, or try a different store, or if you truly believe that your used clothing is somehow some type of gift from God "worth hundreds," then try to sell it on eBay/Amazon, or this thing called Craigslist, all of which exist for exactly that reason. I get it, because I was younger than 28 years old once, and I thought that my clothing was worth more because I paid more. But I bought it new. And quite frankly, now that I look back, I find it kind of amazing that I was ever able to walk into a store with clothes that I no longer wanted or didn't fit me (back then it was because I'd LOST weight; now it's sadly the other way around-- wow, I wish I still had the energy I had in my late teens/early twenties) and GET PAID to get rid of stuff I couldn't use anyway. Don't go in there with clothes that you absolutely love and can't bear to part ways with unless you get nearly the amount that you yourself originally paid for it for the simple reason that that's a childish and spoiled mindset. To be clear, I've found really cool clothes at Plato's Closet, Savers, and Goodwill. Plato's was always a more convenient first go-to for me, because back before I was wearing button-down dress shirts all day basically every weekday for my current job, I was trying to be fashionable in high school and college. To have my wardrobe options narrowed down and sort of "curated" [if you will] was a big help in saving time and effort of going through clothing made for men much older and with a very different fashion sense than me like I needed to do at other resale shops or thrift shops like the ones I mentioned above. The bottom line is that people need to be realistic with what money (if any) they should expect to be able to get for things they've previously owned. Plato's Closet Batavia does not have the marketing and advertising budget to attempt to reach shoppers who have never heard of their location, nor do I imagine that they have the time/inclination to treat every single individual seller's inspection items as carefully and thoughtfully as they might take with their own *personal* garments and then turn around and offer them the most possible money they can. They're running a business. Holding their inherent *need* to pay their bills and still turn a profit (which is probably the most compelling reason someone opens a store in the first place) against them is kind of ignorant. Anyway, I gave them Five Stars not only because I understand what it's like to run a small business, but because they gave me an avenue in the past to put some money back into my pocket while also allowing me more room in my dresser drawers at a time in my life where that extra cash (little though it may have been/seemed/now seems in retrospect) in my pocket, meant I could put gas in my tank and do stuff that maybe I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise, had I not brought my clothes in there and sold them. Let's be reasonable with our reviews, folks. This isn't a factory outlet store that's "going out of business," where "everything must go!" It's a place that PROVIDES A SERVICE and GIVES PEOPLE JOBS. I've brought a lot of new and used clothes here on three separate occasions, and they accepted two shirts out of everything I brought. I do understand the need to be selective, but hearing no to name-brand lightly used and new clothes for so many times encourages me to look elsewhere. This store sucks I came in with over 20 clothes for guys and girls all were new or either worn once or twice. After waiting 20 mins they only picked 5 items and gave me 10 dollars for it. I have to agree with the other two reviews. How this place gets any good reviews is beyond me. This is the worst place to go. I brought a decent box of barely worn stuff and they took the ugliest shirt in the world that my boyfriend didn't want anymore and a single purse. And the. Told me "some of it's just too worn for us". Um. Ok? Not even close. We declined the pathetic $5 offer and walked out laughing the entire time and how pathetic it was. Maybe 2 things in that box I could see as being "too worn" but never worn shoes that are extremely in style right now? You cheap people/company just don't want to pay for good items. That's fine. I'll donate them to HM and get a coupon to use when I shop there. At least I know my donation goes to a really good cause and not to jut make some snobby stuck up dude rich. I went in Plato's Closet for the first time to see if I could find a nice jacket for my friend at work who just went through a rough divorce. The ladys running the store couldn't had been more helpful and showed me exactly what she would like. I showed the manager a couple pictures of my friend from work and she picked out the style and the correct size and all I had to do was pay for it. It is extremely clean, has great merchandise, and when I've sold clothes there they've always bought something from me! Delaney, the store owner, was extremely friendly and made me feel welcome. I have been coming to Plato's Closet for YEARS and all through middle school and high school it was the place to go for discounted clothing and saved me a lot of money! However, it has really deteriorated over the years. The owners are WONDERFUL and are so helpful, but the employees and their way of work lack more and more every time I go in. The girls sit behind the counter and gossip (loudly) and I feel like an inconvenience every single time I go to check out or need a fitting room. They have never been friendly which is a shame because the owners are the complete opposite! Many times I have gone in there may be 4-5 employees however only one cash register is open and a line is steadily forming. 4 employees do not all need to be doing something around the store, a second register can easily be opened to save the aggravation and frustration of those in line. They do often hold clearance sales but the store is a mess and not much seems to cycle out, leaving the racks crammed with styles from 3 seasons ago. What has bothered me THE MOST is their selection process they use to take clothes in. Please DO NOT bring in clothes expecting to actually make money, you won't. I have brought clothes in for YEARS and they take 1-2 things and make excuses for everything else. They often put things all over their social media about needed specific clothes (depending on the season) and that is when I raid my closet. A few weeks back they posted about needing spring/summer clothes. I had a busting garbage bag full of clothes however I do admit about half was fall. My spring clothes were made up of Banana Republic, Pacsun, Tilly's, Forever21, etc. Now I am a clean person and am also not stupid, I would only bring them clothes in the best condition and majority was barely worn. I brought the bag to the 2 gossiping girls and walked around the store till it was ready. Out of everything in that bag, they took a dress, a bra, and one or two other items. $12. I was told my clothes were "outdated" or "this is what we can take." I'm sorry, but Pacsun jeans and a Banana Republic plain black skirt are not outdated. Especially when I go into the store multiple times and see the same dang shirt over and over from 2 years back. I have often bought leggings with a hole or a a sweatshirt that is later seen with a stain on it before I even put it on. I recognize that I should have noticed but that is supposed to be the job of the employees, not me. Not taking a pair of basic blue jeans but taking in a pair of Nike leggings with a hole is unacceptable and it is very hard to discuss that with the employees when majority of them look at you in disgust. I wish the owners could have run this place on their own because I would come in a lot more. I haven't been back in for a few weeks and don't think I ever will again. I hope this place improves over time because what used to be the first stop shop for me, is now a place that's on the end of my list when shopping for clothes. read more

I've never had a good experience with Plato's Closet, but I recently decided to declutter my closet and figured I could make some extra cash. I brought in at least 100 items, including name-brand clothing, shoes, and accessories. They ended up accepting about 5 things and I made about $20 on possibly hundreds of dollars of clothing. They told me the reasons they did not accept most of my items were that they were "worn" or "not in style". Did they forgot they are a used clothing retailer? I walked around the store and saw numerous pieces of clothing that were nearly identical or in even worse shape than the clothes I brought. I officially give up on Plato's Closet, and will just donate my clothing to Salvation Army, where I know they will be appreciated. read more

This place has really deteriorated over the years. I know it's the employees being picky because I have brought the same bag back to them and other Plato's Closets and each time they take something out of it. This time I brought a huge bag of different clothes all in great condition and some items I had bought less than a year ago! They took nothing saying they were looking for more recent items... This is a thrift store? A lot of things stay in style and people go here looking for cute stuff that isn't being sold in the stores anymore. That's not very realistic because people tend to wear the clothes that they've recently bought. The pricing is ridiculous too. I mean 17$ for a pair of Hollister pants? For three more dollars you can actually go to Hollister and get them brand new. I make way more money selling my items online on apps such as Poshmark and Mercari. Just take the same bag back here on a different day and I guarantee a different employee will take stuff from it. read more

Love this store. One of the best Plato's Closet locations in the Chicago area. The ladies here are always so nice & helpful when asked questions. The clothes are also some of the best I've seen at any Plato's Closet, not to mention how organized it is! They have out mannequins & display of trendy clothes, something I haven't seen at any other plato's. They also take a lot of the clothes you bring in. I brought in a bag that had been completely rejected by another Plato's & they took majority of the clothes. I shop here a lot and definitely will continue to! read more

I brought in two bags of barely worn clothes, including some with the tags still on that i had recently bought. All of the clothes were brand names, (f21, Aeropostale, h&m, Brandy Melville), and they offered me $26 for clothes worth easily $100. This is my second time selling at this location and I haven't had good luck either time. If you're still interested in selling with Plato's closet, I recommend going to the Schaumburg location, as they usually offer more money and take more items. read more
