Admittedly, one of my daughters has had good luck at this store in the past. Unfortunately, for two years in a row my other daughter has not. There is one employee who consistently "fat shames" girls of all sizes. Recently while there she told my daughter, "you're tiny, but not that tiny" while she was trying on a dress. While my daughter was in the fitting room she turned to another employee and said, "she's been here before, she thinks she a 00, but she's a 0". We had been told that day by the owner that they were still ordering dresses until Labor Day, so we knew the sizes might not be right, but were just looking for the style. This same employee also told another girl, "you need to try on size 6 and above, that's why nothing is looking good on you." I turned to her mother, who was appalled and told her that this is how this woman always behaves. I was hoping that this year would be better and last year was a fluke, but that was not the case. They have a nice selection of dresses and the pricing is the same as all the other shops. I just wouldn't recommend it unless your daughter is not bothered by comments about her body. We will not be back. The Prom Shoppe in Oswego is far better. read more

I just popped in with my mom looking for a dress for prom and we were immediately bombarded with questions. I told the saleswoman that I wanted classy and simple and she pointed to a hot pink sparkly ball gown. Eventually they let us look on our own. There were a lot of beautiful dresses but small selection in select sizes and pretty expensive. I found 3 I kinda liked and got a dressing room only to discover there were no mirrors! It was hard to figure out how to put them on and I wasn't comfortable exposing myself to a salesperson I just met so I just didn't come out in them. I found one I kinda liked and I may have got it if I wasn't immediately hounded with compliments and questions before I could even look at myself or find my mom in the room. After I barely said a word a girl came back with a dress I didn't ask for and I got really overstimulated. I ran out pretty fast after that. If you like this kind of shopping this must be great but pretty intense if you're used to shopping alone. Everyone was so nice, just try to read social cues a bit better. Just let the dresses speak for themselves sometimes. read more

My daughter and I visited Special Occassions in Batavia Sunday 8/18/24. When we walked in, we were immediately bombarded. We simply wanted to look on our own first, but they were immediately pushy when we entered. My daughter went through their small inventory and only found 2 dresses she liked. She tried them on and the lady waited outside of her dressing room. When my daughter came out, they asked her a million questions about if she liked it and she was visibly getting nervous. At one point, the woman barged into her fitting room without asking while my daughter was exposed. She was severely uncomfortable. They then went and picked a bunch of dresses we already saw and did not like. They were so pushy for a sale my daughter and I were both uncomfortable. I told them we had a budget of $300 or less as they were showing my daughter $600 dresses. She said, "Oh why didn't you say that." Then, in front of the multiple people who were in the dressing room, she discussed our budget and explained to look for a simpler dress. We had finally had enough and I told the woman we were leaving. She said, 'oh try this store!". She gave me the name of the store and told me to put in in my GPS which I did. When we got there, IT WAS A THRIFT STORE! My daughter was so embarrassed. We ended up heading to Elgin and Napervile and we got the beaded dress of her dreams for under $300 after we were made to feel poor in the store. We have money. I'm just a single mom on a budget. Not only did we find a dress elsewhere, but my sister is getting married in January and we are looking for stores to shop for bridesmaids dresses. I am also engaged and have 2 daughters who will need dresses for high school moving forward. Because of our treatment, we will never set foot in this store again. I am beyond appalled about this place I will never ever go here or spend my money here! First off my daughter tried on a dress last week wasn't 100% about it as the dress shop doesn't put dresses on hold for anyone, so we went back today to see if it was available and try it on with her friend! The lady look in her book said yes that dress is still AVAILABLE for your school! (they write down what school you're going to and what dress it is so there's no repeats) So they give us the dress and we try it on which my daughter looked absolutely stunning in, so we where going to buy it! Well there was another woman in there with her daughter as she pulled the owner to the side and something was said, then all of a sudden they took the dress from my daughter and said it wasn't available no longer after we tried it on! Remember they don't put dresses on hold for anyone, well the owner said well that's my friend and her daughter wants dress as it should been tagged plus she not here, so my daughter can't have the dress the girl not here, really I thought you didn't put dresses on hold and before my daughter put the dress on you told her it was AVAILABLE, this is not how you do business at all, let's grow up!!! read more

My experience with Special Occasions is not a personal one, but I wanted to write a review anyway. I worked with Special Occasions, and Mary in particular, for a major event at the high school I work for. We do a male beauty pageant each year, and a local dress shop allows us to "borrow" dresses for the evening for the ladies involved in the formal wear portion. We have worked with Special Occasions now for two years, and our experience with them has been great. They are incredibly patient with the high school girls involved in the show who go in to have fittings, and have an incredible selection of unique dresses. The girls looked absolutely beautiful and had only positive reviews of the store employees. I would highly recommend this location for all of your Prom and Wedding needs! read more

We traveled to Special Occasions based on the Yelp reviews we read here. What a wonderful experience!! The staff were attentive, helpful, and so very generous with their time. They pulled dress after dress for my daughter to try on and even undressed the mannequin for her to try that dress on as well. After many selections of many different styles of dresses, the very last dress my daughter tried on was the one!! We would have never selected that one ourselves, but thanks to the amazing staff, we found her prom dress!! They have a nice selection of dresses if you wear smaller sizes. They do have a few in larger sizes. After my daughter tried on a few dresses and we went out to look at the dresses again, no one talked to us again. It has been my experience with other stores that they will at the very least offer to look to see if the dress can be ordered. Budget was not a concern for us. We found a dress elsewhere and will skip this shop when looking for homecoming and prom dresses next year. read more

Incredible selection, latest styles, outstanding service. And definitely NOT the shop to go to if you are looking for last season's bargain basement priced, run of the mill dresses. Purchased a Homecoming dress for my daughter last October and we were both treated courteously and professionally. The dress and school were noted in their files so another girl going to this same dance could not purchase an identical gown. I live in town and have watched this store exceed many girls' expectations over the years. They do not "up sell", push accessories, or rush you through a purchase. Implying a teen age girl that she isn't the ideal weight is extremely rude and if I could give you 0 stars I would. I wish I could give this store zero stars. I took my daughter there to look for a prom dress. I will admit they have a nice selection of dresses. Initially their staff is friendly but they become extremely rude and arrogant when they realize that you are not going to spent $400+ on a dress. There is a rack of "under $200 dresses" but I couldn't find any that were under $300 on it. In addition, the comments that I overheard the staff make about other girls were appalling. On the day we were in the store, there were a few girls from other schools trying on dresses. The staff let these girls run around the dressing rooms like they owned the store. Those girls made horrible comments about other girls within earshot of the staff who never put a stop to it. I'll never recommend this store to anyone. Ugh. Never again. Tried on many dresses and found one we liked but needed a different size. While waiting to be measured, a lady came in for a refund on an order and it was something you don't want to hear from someone in customer relations. We stood by waiting for measurements and finally ordered the dress. My daughter went to pick it up, and was told she was too fat for that size!!
