When I say I despise Plato's Closet as a company, I genuinely mean it. I wasn't even planning to leave a review, but after attempting twice to sell clothes and being told both times they were "at full capacity," I've completely lost interest in ever coming back. The first time was around 4 PM, and the second was before 2 PM. Even after being told to come at 10 AM instead, I have no desire to make a third trip just to get lowballed and have them mark them up in a mysterious price. If you've ever tried selling to Plato's Closet before, you already know this is the infamous reality. They have one of the worst business models I've experienced for a resale store, and it's frustrating that nearly every location seems to provide the exact same disappointing experience. The employees often come across as snobby, like they work on commission at a luxury department store and see themselves as fashion authorities. Mind you, I brought in genuinely good pieces that people in Fayetteville would absolutely buy. I had Coach bags, Marc Jacobs, Anthropologie, Lululemon, and more. So for them to advertise that they buy clothes all day, only for the rules and capacity to keep change depending on the day or time, is ridiculous. They lost out, not me. If I could leave 0 stars for every Plato's Closet location, I would. Nothing would convince me to return. I only decided to swallow my pride this time because I'm in town trying to sell my remaining clothes before donating them. I don't have personal ill will toward the employees themselves, but honestly, they deserve better than working under such a poorly run system. Seeing the "This Store Is For Sale" sign out front was honestly the cherry on top. While visiting this store, I dropped off a selection of clothing for review. When I returned to pick up my items, I was informed that none of them could be purchased due to an alleged "odor." Surprised by this explanation, I politely asked for clarification regarding what specific odor had been detected. Unfortunately, I was given little to no meaningful explanation. The employee then added that some of the items appeared to have stains and looked as though they had been recently worn. This was particularly confusing, as none of the clothing had been worn in approximately eight years. While the items were not washed immediately before being brought in, I had washed and sorted everything within the previous one to two weeks, carefully separating items for sale, donation, and disposal. After leaving the store, I placed the bags in my trunk. My daughter asked how much the store had offered for the clothing, and I explained that nothing had been purchased because the items allegedly had an odor. She appeared just as confused as I was. At that moment, I noticed another woman and her daughter leaving the store carrying their unsold items. They appeared similarly confused and frustrated, so I politely asked whether Plato's Closet had purchased any of their clothing. Before I could even finish my question, the woman explained that she had also been told her items had an odor. When she asked for clarification, she was informed that her clothing allegedly smelled like smoke. As we compared our experiences, we both found it concerning that two women of color had been given nearly identical explanations, yet neither of us received a clear or consistent explanation regarding the alleged odors. This naturally raised questions about whether we had been treated differently. It is important to note that this occurred before I had ever read any online reviews about this location. Seeking clarification, we returned to the store and requested to speak with management. Instead, we were met by a woman who identified herself as the owner. Unfortunately, the interaction was unprofessional and dismissive. The employee who had returned my items identified herself when asked, but the owner refused to answer questions, provide additional details regarding the alleged odor, or point out the stains that had supposedly disqualified my items. During this interaction, I was instructed to leave the store. At the same time, the owner was telling the employee who identified herself as a manager that she never had to provide her name to customers in situations like ours. As a woman of color, I found it troubling that another woman of color and I were both told our items could not be accepted because of an unspecified odor, yet neither of us received a clear explanation or any meaningful opportunity to address the concern. What makes the situation even more confusing is that on the same day, I successfully sold approximately $200 worth of clothing at Once Upon A Child, located right next door and operating under the same franchise ownership. Those items came from the same home, were stored under the same conditions, and no concerns regarding odor or smoke were raised whatsoever. I understand that resale stores have the right to reject items and that buying decisions are ultimately at their discretion. However, customers deserve clear communication, professionalism, and consistent treatment. Based on my experience, I left with more questions than answers and will not be returning. read more

Came here around 4 or 4:30 to drop off clothes and they stated we needed to go get a bin for the clothes or some type of laundry basket, left to grab a bin from walmart which is around the corner, came back and they stated it was too late and they only had 30 minutes left??? yet they don't close until 7 and it was 4:45 ish going on 5.... Along with that they also stated they only take 1 bin a day which was fine because I assume its per person... I had 1 bin of female clothes and my boyfriend had 1 bin of men clothes and both werent big bins, i could easily carry each bin with no trouble. Im just a bit lost because they said they required a bin and we came back after getting brand new bins in maybe 15 minutes max and then said it was too late, i feel like my time was wasted and i was given the run around, they couldve just said they werent in the mood to go through the clothes or something.. I came in to sell my clothes and they told me I needed to bring them in a bin so I went to Walmart and got one then went back. It took them 3 hours and when I finally got the message saying they were done this girl told me that's they didn't want any of my clothes because "it wasn't what they were looking for". I would understand if I was trying to sell winter stuff in the spring but I was selling in season clothes. Overall they were very rude and made the process very difficult. Let me start off by saying I should have read over the reviews for this location before making a visit there. Today was my first time at this location, but I have been to many Plato's before today. I got there about 15 minutes before opening and was waiting out in line for the store to open. A few minutes before the store opened up. The owner came out and told the gentleman before me he couldn't bring his clothes in. The gentleman asked why, and she gave him no answer and just told me to take them somewhere else. She then approached me and told me the same thing. I asked her "why?" and she told me because my clothes sticking up. So I told her it was just because I had a pair of shoes underneath and that I didn't mind taking the shoes out, and folding the jackets on the top smaller so everything would fit. That wasn't good enough. She then told me "no, I'm not taking them". So I said "Okay, I have another container in my car that I can put some of the clothes in if that would work?". She then stated "Did you not hear me? I told you I'm not taking your clothes". So I said "Okay... You told me the reason why, and I have two ways around that reason and you're still telling me no. So I guess it must be something deeper than the clothes." I pointed out that the lady she let in before me had a container that her lid didn't even shut, and she still got it. And she said "I don't care. Your clothes aren't coming in, so just leave" as she flagged me on with her hands. At this point based on the two people she turned around and the person she let it. I have a pretty good understanding that she probably just picks and chooses what skin color she wants in her store. My passenger that was with me heard how she was acting from the parking spot, and begin recording the whole incident, and I was underneath the store camera the whole time. So this whole interaction can be seen on now my footage, and the stores footage. And it will show her when she got in my face while I was folding my clothes back up to leave. I would never in my life do business here, or recommend anyone to go there. She also kept reminding me she was "the owner of these whole stores". So hearing that, I would assume she probably owns "Once Upon A Child" as well since they are independently owned sister companies. I was just going to let this situation go. But after reading all the other previous reviews with similar situations. It's obvious the owner/store does this very often to certain type of people. I dropped my bin of clothes off at 11:30 AM, expecting that they would be done when I came back after work at 5pm. Wrong. I would give -10 stars if it was an option. A lot of platos I've dealt with have terrible customer service but this one takes the cake. They open at 10am and I went for 5 days around 10:30 and they told me they're no longer accepting clothes for the day. That is ridiculous. They said they take the first 30 of the day and there's no way 30 people came in there before me. There were no clothes behind him where they would be. A man went in right after me and he took his stuff but not mine 2 min before. So Instead I took my clothing an hour and a half away to the platos in Durham and they were more than happy to take my bin of clothing and they had the best customer service I've ever had at a platos. The one in Fayetteville needs to be re staffed or closed down. They're lazy and they lie straight to your face. :) read more

Absolutely the worst business in town. Policy is not told to people when dropping clothes off. Nor is it in writing for you to sign and agree to. They offered store credit when we did not want store credit. We said we would just come back and pick up all of our clothes. After they did that, we went to pick up the clothes and they already put the clothes on the floor. Said we have store credit. They called the manager (Cat) on duty which explained to the associate that we were supposed to get ALL of our clothes and they still did not make it right by offering funds.. I have sold clothes here one other time and got about 20$ for a few things so it was okay. Completely cleared out my closet recently and thought I'd see what they'd buy. I had all kinds of clothes, men's, women's L/XL, Plus sizes, everything (I hadn't gotten thru my wardrobe in a while). They literally didn't take anything. I have Tommy Hilfiger and other designer items in there, no stains rips or obvious usage they wouldn't take them. I brought at least 30 items in they refused all of it. The manager/owner is extremely rude to everyone. The workers were very sweet and I feel bad for them because they work very hars in a toxic work environment where the owner yells at them and her customers. The owner commented on my size saying she wouldn't take my clothes and wouldnt even look at what I had even though they hadn't sold out. I had new clothes, in style, all in the past 18 months. This poor woman needs help before she hurts everyone around her, speaking to others the way you want to be treated is something she needs to learn.
