I've been shopping at Plato's for a couple of years now and I enjoy the thrifting aspect and environmental benefits that come with thrifting and buying second hand-- I can say the prices are affordable-- most of the products there are sold for pretty cheap. If your shopping for a specific brand it can be more expensive, but true to the item, I saw these Nike shoes that were reselling for $60 and they are used and worn through-- to be expected for a thrift but they were still in good condition-- I didn't end up buying them because they were out of budget for me at the time-- I might go back to see if they still have them maybe-- they have a lot of cute summer stuff, and they sell bras and all kinds of clothes-- you definitely have to sift through to find something really good! The staff is very to themselves unless your at the register or being direct with a question, other then that they don't really bother you while they are working-- seeing the other reviews kinda makes me sad because I do enjoy this place-- but I heard it can be hard if you're trying to resell your cloths and get some money off them! I haven't experienced this yet-- I've yet to want to sell any of my own cloths to this store, but according to the reviews I might choose elsewhere. read more

Dang. I feel like the reviews are harsh. I haven't ever sold stuff in this store but do see lots of people trying to sell their clothes in big bags. This is more of a hot spot for tweens and teens but you can find some good stuff here if you sift a bit. It still has the goodwill smell but not as bad. General rule of thumb: your clothes you bought for $50 are pretty much worthless the moment you walk out of a store. Plato's closet will probably give you less than $3 a piece because most of the stuff people bring is fast fashion. I've seen some good brands though like everlane, but most things aren't high quality. I did get lucky a found a very nice cashmere sweater, an all cotton sweater, and my new favorite corduroy skirt. My rule of thumb, brand is less important than the material they used so that's how I do my shopping. Staff here is pretty much teens so don't expect the best. Good luck! read more

I used to frequent Plato's, they had some good gets here and there I was never really happy with the re-selling prices, but that's not really what I went there for. I went in about a week ago and there were four young ladies at the register, and I said hello and all of them ignored me and I said HELLO, got a look, and was acknowledged. I was there to buy some shoes, a sweater, and hopefully a polo I did find some sneakers had a good price and I was also there to sell some old items that I didn't use anymore that they seem to be looking for as they needed men's clothing. They excepted the clothing. I walked around and shopped a little bit at which point the manager, Karen approached me and told me she would not be excepting my clothing today for purchase and I asked her why and she said that it's because I I just wasn't the vibe. I was confused at this point because I continued to shop and purchase some thing so I haven't been banned from the store. They just didn't want to buy my things but they were OK with me buying theirs. Being a long time shopper of Plato's, I was a little turned off by this. I believe they may have just changed hands so I had Fall dial couple times with the owner and the manager and they were going to have a conversation about me coming back to sell the items that I initially was there to sell. I spoke with Karen this morning and she said no and it's because they made the employees and the guests feel uncomfortable. The only thing that I did and I will fully admit when Karen introduced herself to me, I said, that is a very fitting name. Also the second hello when walking in the door was probably unnecessary, but to walk in and not be acknowledged by four people that are standing there is poor customer service, and after telling me that I made the employees and customers uncomfortable, she told me she thought I was trying to steal a sweater, this was after I had purchased some shoes. I mean I called these women back probably two or three times and had a very nice conversation with the owner. Carol, Karen not so much but I can see why they're struggling to accuse someone of stealing or me trying to steal after ive already purchased merchandise I don't even know what to say, but stay far away, and then I walked to my Mercedes and left without stealing the nine dollar sweater. This place sucks. I dropped my clothes off at 11 am and came back at 3:30 and they still hadn't gone through my single bin of clothes. Not to mention I live an hour away and had been wasting time in Portland for hours. When I went to check if they were done and they weren't I just asked for them back and they put them in a too small trash bag that broke on the way out the door. You're WAY better off bringing them to a place where people in need will actually benefit from the clothes. 0/10 experience. read more

Told me to come back multiple times during the week, because the wait times were too long. I came back 4 different times in a span of 1 week(from 11am to 2pm) to try to sell my clothes and still wouldn't take them. Disappointed in the staff, Also called when I was 20minutes away to see it they had time to take my clothes and they said their was no wait.... 20mins later their is a 4 hour wait time and told me to come back. Someone needs to tell the girls that people can hear them. Jeering at the clothing that people bring in is not okay. I could hear them making fun of someone's drop off from the back of the store. I went in here to sell clothes. I walk through the door with a trashbag of clothes in my arms and stand at the counter. There are no customers in front of me and there are about 5 teenagers standing at the desk talking to each other. I stand there for a good 5 minutes before they even acknowledge me only to be told they are not taking buys at that time. They saw me waiting, but finishing their conversation was more important than doing their jobs. Very irritating. read more

The downfall unfortunately is their customer service, definitely a younger staffing and unfortunately that leads to less-than ideal customer focus. I have found some cute clothes at this location, but unfortunately the customer service leaves much to be desired for. When attempting to make an return on unused article of clothing- I was denied and made to feel inferior. The salesgirls whispered about me and my item in front of me, and did not speak up until I asked if there was problem. (There was a stain on the article of clothing which was news to me- since I never wore it after having tried it on.) The store policy was then coldly explained to me, and after I said that that item had been unworn by me, all of the salesgirls simply walked away and left me alone at the counter, without a word. Since I am in a financial pickle like the majority of the working class, I love buying my tops, dresses, skirts, and accessories here. I don't go for the shoes or jeans because I'm very petite and it just won't work out! This interesting secondhand store actually gives you cash money when it's time to donate your clothing. Before bringing it to the Salvation Army or Goodwill, think about Plato's. I made $15 with one bag of clothing and $30 on another. Seriously folks, you get CASH for giving PC your unwanted fashion trends. However, there is a catch. Your unwanted clothing must not be from the 70s-2000s because they have a computer system that lets the consumer know if the merchandise still has value or not. Nifty, right? If you think you'll get money back for your items, try it out. It never hurts to try. I usually find good steals for close to 75% off. Some brands that I've bought from Platos range from Express, American Eagle, H&M and a whole lot more. I always go to PC excited because I know I'll find something! read more

The selection and prices here are great, but the smell is extremely off putting. As soon as you walk in the door, you're hit by a perfume that is overwhelming to the point of headache inducing. This is from an automatic air freshener that pumps out fragrance on a far too often basis. When I brought it up to the employees, I was told they were aware and it was 50/50 on people who enjoyed it and hated it. I repeat, they are aware that they are turning off half of their business with something that they can easily fix, and don't really give a care if you don't like it because some people do. There also seems to be no A/C, so expect to sweat in the dressing rooms. TL/DR; It's not a pleasant shopping experience, but you can find great stuff here. read more

Great prices when my wife was shopping there, however as mentioned in other reviews the smell is way to strong. I'm giving them one star for buying clothes as well as selling them, and the other star for prices. The smell alone is enough to ward away anyone over the age of 16. It is very reminiscing of that person that you know who showers in Cologne or perfume. As soon as you step foot in the place the smell punches you right in the face. For somebody that might have an allergy to any type of deodorants then stay away. They must let their employees every ten minutes run wildly in the store displacing oxygen. Platos closet in south Portland is probably the WORST place to sell clothes to. This isn't the first time this has happened but yesterday, on a Saturday, I went into the store looking to sell a bag of clothes. I stood at the selling counter for about 10 minutes patiently waiting for someone to help me. Everyone saw me enter the store and looked at me kind of weird lol. I still, waited patiently. After the short while, a young man came over and told me that because of their event they were having they were not buying that day and to come back tomorrow (Sunday) between 12-4pm. I took the time out of my day, again to go out there to sell them clothes. I walk up to the door and AGAIN the sign states they're not buying until the next day at 10am. I walked in, and the same young man was working. I said "you're not buying???" He replied with "noooo I'm sorry :\". This is terrible service how are you a place that buys clothes to resell but never is able to buy from anyone??!!! I was livid that he told me to come back and again it was the same results. This happened to me before when I went in to sell to them. Don't sell your clothes to these people they're lazy and take their time doing other things. Sell them somewhere else or donate them to someone in need!! Also very annoying that I was here on vacation trying to sell clothes I had got rid of when I moved so I'm not ABLE to come back to sell them another day. They don't take into consideration what they say to their customers. If they told me 12-4 and they weren't "able to buy" they should've accommodated me, especially since the guy remembered who I was. read more

If I could give a lower rating, I would. Went with my best friend who's Hispanic to sell some pairs of shoes. As soon as we walked in, employees were eyeing us as we were the only males in the store. One of the employees quickly walked up to us and told us they need to take the shoes and asked for our names. We gave the shoes to them with no hassle and shopped while we waited for them to review the shoes. They never touched the shoes and we eyeing us the entire time. After 30 minutes, we both sat down and were talking to pass the time. The worker that took our shoes then came up to us and told us "if you guys disrespect and trash our store You need to leave". I don't mind shopping here, the store is easily set up. HOWEVER, this store is consignment.... every time I come in I have a negative experience checking in clothes. The last time, I was offered a wildly low price for luxury brand shoes (Giuseppe Zanotti shoes are worth $700- they said $70 .. Worn ONCE lol). And today, a clear night with no wind, rain, or snow- there is a written note on the door "Closing at 6PM due to weather conditions". I've had 0 days off since November 15th and have been holding on to this stuff to bring in. I walk in with the box at 5:45, and while helping someone else- she looks over to informs me she can no longer check anything in. I tell her I work close by, but I usually work the same hours that this Platos location is open, and i wouldn't have time to come back and forth yet again. I asked if it would be possible to leave it overnight, and to pick up on my lunch break tomorrow. She says no & says that this is not accepted, and nothing can be held as she is "the only one working"...... The girl behind the desk is the ONLY associate working?!?!?! I'm a retail manager and this is absolutely ridiculous considering the square footage of this store. At LEAST 2 people! Good lord! And on top of that a written note saying they will be closing 3 hours early. Classic. You're better off selling your clothes at literally any other consignment store at this point. read more

Went to Plato's today to get some fun fall fashions. Came home and unpacked all my purchases and decided to wear a top that I had purchased from them. I put it on and went out to dinner. In the middle of dinner I look down to see that the elastic on the inside top of the shirt is completely separated and ripped away. Later, on the same shirt I notice that there is a HUGE rip in the under arm of the left sleeve. I completely understand that with buying used clothes comes imperfections BUT there is no reason that clothes that are ripped should be on their shelves let alone being sold to other people. read more

I can take this store in small doses. Why? First, you walk in and it smells like a teenager's room right before a high school dance (if they still do those things). Secondly, the music is a tad loud (again teenager's room). I guess that is their focus group they are trying to lure in there, but my GAWD, turn down the everything to also maybe appeal to the slightly older crowd that have their own money to spend. Just saying. You could get a broader age if you just tone it down a bit. Really. You could. Also, after hearing a mom become quickly impatient with her daughter, toning down the sensory overload may help keep the moms from dragging their teens out before they can spend any money. I personally use this place to grab a few shirts for work where I don't need to be top notch and won't cry if they get ruined since I'm not paying full price. It works for that..... They don't greet you or provide any quality customer service in this store. I tried for the 4th time to bring my clothes and shoes down to Plato's Closet Plato's Closet - South Portland which is almost a 40 minute drive for me. Every time I try to call or come in I'm told that they're no longer accepting clothes for sale even when I show up 2 hours before they close the store. There's almost no information online. The first time I called they said they stopped selling 1 hour before they close so I showed up almost 2 hours before they close and they still stopped selling. I work 3rd shift I can't come down here in the mornings and I explained that to them every time I called but they don't care. When I went into the store they didn't even acknowledge that I was standing there they made me feel like a jerk for trying to get someone's attention. They give you reasonable prices for what they do take, but they ask for name brands and then refuse to take them, even when in season. Absolutely ridiculous. I've been here several times. Live about an hour away, so this is really far for me to get to, so I would expect good things to be available. This place seems to be a good place to shop if you wear a small or an extra small. Anything over that size range is gonna be hard to shop for. And I don't think you can purely blame this on being a consignment shop. I've been to several consignment shops closer to me, and while there are more smaller sizes, it's nothing to this scale. For every 1 large article of clothing, they have about 7-8 small pieces. I truly think that 70% of the entire store are those two sizes (small and extra small). It's frustrating not being able to find anything that fits and wasting so much time to get there to leave empty handed. My recommendation for this store is to actively look for larger sizes and try to stock them more. I'm not saying everything in there should be a 3XL, but it would be nice to have a wide variety of options for different body types. read more
