I was visiting Portland and stopped into the shop just to browse and kill sometime. I was pleasantly surprised by their selection and variety of both new and used albums. Having recently purchased a record player I picked up a few vinyls for my collection. If you're looking for music or just wanted check out a cool shop, definitely stop in for a visit. I could get myself into a lot of trouble at Moody Lords... and I did. They don't have the largest selection of clothing (half of the store is full of stacks and stacks of records), but the selection features quality items at good prices. I ended up finding a shirt and two skirts easily, and, although I couldn't afford it, I loved the original line of clothing that they have. This place was clean and organized, unlike what I've come to expect from thrift/vintage stores. Friendly woman working at the counter. Right above Strange Maine, Moody Lords hangs onto a little bit of Strange Maine's eclectic charm but refines it into a more traditional vinyl-browsing experience. There's plenty of vinyl records to sift through in the usual genre/artist setup and the prices seem very reasonable ($5-6 for classic punk and rock albums). There were some 7" records as well, though the 12" versions are much more available. Given that not everyone who is shopping for vinyl actually has something to play the tunes on, the place sells old record players as well. I also noticed a few CDs here and there, but I would certainly not come here for that medium. The other interesting selling point about Moody Lords is the corner of vintage/secondhand clothing. I noticed a few older shirts and outfits on a rack, while purses and shoes could be found nearby. The inclusion of retro clothing simultaneously allows Moody Lords to branch away a bit from vinyl while nicely adding to the decor. I'm not sure if, given the space, they're going to expand on their limited stock of vintage material, but for those looking for such things they're worth peeking at. With the very helpful guy behind the counter spinning what sounded like a Brazilian lounge record, as well as the comfortable vibe of the place, Moody Lords is worth the journey up the stairs from Congress Street. read more

I can't comment on the vintage clothing aspect, but as far as the vinyl selection goes here, it is phenomenal. The jazz selection in particular is right up my alley. I can't remember ever seeing a record by the Revolutionary Ensemble in a shop window before I found this place. I don't get up to Portland nearly often enough, but every time I stop in I am literally blown away at the stuff I find. The prices are VERY reasonable. I have found some pretty rare records here for well below what I might find them selling for on Ebay. And the folks behind the counter are friendly. The new location on the street is great too-- much better than the 2nd floor spot they previously occupied. Basically, Moody Lords is a must-visit for me whenever I am in town. read more

Probably my favorite record store in all of the [Port]land. Well curated, and they do a really good thing: they post pictures of notable new arrivals on their facebook page. This way I know when some desirable wax needs to be plucked on my lunch breaks. They have interesting vintage clothing too, but I don't purport to be an expert in this field. Some good tapes from time to time as well, if you're into that sort of thing. read more

Past experience has made a bit skeptical of the vintage shop / record store combo, but to date, Moody Lords was the poster child for exception. The record collection was limited in volume, but not in depth. They had duplicates in various conditions of several rock/folk artists usually picked over in the bins at most popular record stores - Neil Young, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, etc. Their jazz selection was eclectic. A bit pricey, but all the records were in great shape or marked accordingly. Nick, the sole employee working during my visit, was really nice. Moody Lords is a cool vintage shop, too. Their women's section was about 4 times as large as the men's, and I thought the prices were a bit high, but they stocked a bunch of really nice and diverse things. read more

My real nice find for our last trip to Portland. Situated above Strange Maine, who seems to try too hard to be weird, Moody Lords had a great selection of indie/underground records with a few nice gems. I spent nearly $100 and could have easily spent double that again. The owner was friendly though not imposing, and let me listen to a record I thought may have had a skip, and then left it on for the entire duration of my visit. Having second clothing was a real plus, cause that gave my wife something to look at while I looked at every record bin, which offered everything from punk and metal, to jazz, soul and funk. A bit of everything for everyone, and even a "classic rock" section if you're looking for something a bit more mainstream. Highly recommended! read more

A great little shop, do not pass on by! This store carries a wide variety of vinyl that are well organised by genre/artist. There is also a great selection of singles; we would have bought for way more had we not been on a travel budget. As a bonus, there is also quite a few racks of vintage clothing and jewellry sold here, once again all at reasonable prices. The vintage pieces are clean and very nice. I found a great pair of shoes as well as a scarf for under $20. The clerk was friendly but not pushy; he was a calm presence in the corner, which is all I need as a buyer. read more

Great little vintage clothing / records store. Browsed mostly the 45's which I had no trouble finding a stack of cool ones at reasonable prices. Owner was very friendly and gave me a break the price. As I was walking out I flipped through the garage LPs and saw a bunch of cool odd ball records as well as your quality standard fare. The 45's were pretty solid not a ton but mostly cool stuff. I'm sure you could find something here if you had 1 record or 1000. This is hands down the best vintage store in Portland. It does not have an infinite amount of filer to go through like some other places- they really go for quality over quantity here. So browsing through everything is really fun and exciting since its all great. The clothing selection is sooo good. The accessories are adorable. The record selection is killer. Great spot. I was on vacation with the family. I stayed at a spot down the block and passed this place for a week. Saw a pair of beautiful engineer boots in the window. Finally went in and tried them on. Perfect. They now had a home. The staff was nice. The clothing looked great. The record selection was great. The women behind was extremely helpful. Played a nice section of music. Found out about an Eno album I never heard of. Glad I finally went in. Will make sure to drop in each time I am in town. read more

A pretty cool record store and thrift shop sort of place. They have a good selection of used vinyl and a small selection of new stuff. Overall they don't have a ton of records, but enough to spend some time browsing. The vintage clothes looked pretty decent as well. read more

We spent the better part of a day in Portland venturing from Central Maine back to Boston and Moody Lords was by far one of the best spots we stopped at while in town. Great vintage selection and even better vinyl. I bought a stack of rare, extremely affordable LP gems. The perfect spot for a record buyer and / or vintage shopper. read more

This place is such a gem! I am in Maine on vacation and stopped in because my dad was looking for vinyl. Great vinyl selection but what I loved most was the clothing. Really neat vintage stuff. The staff was very friendly and I really enjoyed browsing. It is also very clean and organized. Wish it was closer to where I lived but I will definitely be returning on my next vacation.
