I am a property manager for 250+ units in downtown Madison. I just had a college student (who just…read moremoved in) call me saying someone was at their house to inspect their fire extinguisher. I didn't have anyone scheduled to come out, so I called my maintenance tech to go to the house immediately to see what was going on. Indeed, the person was from Fire & Safety Equipment III (who is contracted through my fire protection vendor to inspect fire extinguishers on an annual basis) was there for an annual inspection. He then wanted to get into two other units "right now" to inspect the extinguishers and was surprised that we wouldn't just let him in with no notice. I immediately called the manager of this company and told him what had happened. His response was "sorry but we can't call everyone to tell them when we are coming. Would you like us to call you next year before we come out?". I was BLOWN AWAY at this response! I informed him that our leases state that we will give 24 hours notice before entering an occupied unit. The manager's response was, "we have about 1000 customers, we can't call everybody!" So you just show up at people's houses/apartments unexpected once a year??? If you don't have the manpower to make a quick call or send a quick email or text regarding an appointment, then how do you have the manpower to just show up at people's houses/apts unannounced? What do you do when they aren't home?? And regarding the college students (or anyone for that matter)...do you expect them to just let any STRANGER into their homes without notice? Doesn't this go everything against what you learned about strangers?!? Fire & Safety Equipment III will never service one of my properties again.
