So rude. I went to this location to sell some golf clubs, it was 20 minutes before closing. You'd have thought I'd asked this guy to do a heart transplant in 20 minutes. He continues with exasperation saying he could take my number and call me back tomorrow. If he says that nicely right away, perfect. Stopped in about a month ago for a new bike to commute around the city. They were closing soon but the guys at the counter didn't seem too annoyed by my presence and helped me with my questions. I unfortunately didn't have the money to buy a bike right then and there, and ended up getting a bike on OfferUp instead (don't recommend doing that, the bike I got is falling apart) but their knowledge and advice is when helped me find the right bike for me (and it is not their fault I was scammed into a poorly cared-for bike from another vendor). John was extremely helpful. I brought in my mountain bike that I had not ridden in over 5 years. He checked it out and recommended the basic tune up and a chain replacement. My hybrid bike was stolen and was looking for a similar ride with my mountain bike. John suggested swapping out the tires and gave me a few suggestions. Came in looking for baseball bag. Was not thrilled with the selection. One of the used bags we were interested in still had a protective cup inside. Not a big deal but I do think when taking in used product, looking for things like that matter. We did end up finding a new baseball tee we were interested in. Brought it to the counter and asked if it was possible to price match to Amazon which was $5 less. I much rather support a local business than Amazon but at the same time, my wallet also is important. The man shook his head no. No words. No discussion. Just head shake. I found it rude. I understand if that's their chosen business practice to not price match, but I do think using actual words and having a conversation isn't too much to expect. Why would anyone choose to pay more money and have poor customer service when you don't have to deal with that online. read more

Ahhhhhh! My family loves and appreciates that someone thought of this wonderful concept. You can get soccer shoes, tennis rackets and used bikes here. We have gotten all of the above at very reasonable prices. I love that these items are being recycled at a reasonable price and plan on donating sports equipment that we no longer use or outgrow. Solid establishment. I've purchased gear from this company in the past and continue to do so whenever I am in need of sports equipment. The one sport I'd like equipment in that this store doesn't support is bowling but for the other needs like biking equipment, free weights, gloves and occasional gifts I always find something suitable for my needs. I especially like the pricing. Anything lower than retail in the used category for my own use is fine, unless of course we're talking used attire. (I'm pretty sure they don't sell used jerseys, but if they did.. yeesh!) Play it Again Sports locations are few these days, so we are lucky to have this one on the North side. I've been a semi-regular customer here for a couple of years. My wife has a membership (15% off most goods and services) which has come in handy since we've been building a modestly active life together at the R. homestead about a mile from the store. We have purchased tennis rackets, tennis balls, a used bicycle, and a set of bike locks, and this is always our first stop when we are looking for something in the sports/fitness vein. I generally find the staff to be helpful and knowledgeable about their wares. The bike that I bought here last year needed a minor brake repair, so I brought it in on a Saturday morning. I waited behind one other customer, and the technician was able to help me within a few minutes. He took a look, diagnosed the problem within thirty seconds, and quoted me $10 for a brake tuneup. He said that he could have it completed in about 45 minutes, even though I saw that their shop was full and earlier on the phone someone had quoted me a Wednesday pickup. I told him that I would come back in a few hours. About 30 minutes later he called to say that the repair had been completed, and that it had required a $3 part, which brought my total to $13 before discount and tax. I really appreciated the fast service, follow-up phone call. and up-front cost estimates. This is my first bicycle in over ten years, so I don't have a good basis for comparison to other bike repair shops. That being said, I found the $13 to be quite reasonable to get me back in full working order for the season, and because of the fast, amiable service, I will definitely bring the ol' two-wheeler back here for its next repairs. read more

I went in to buy some equipment. In the span of 10 minutes I witnessed the owner being a complete dick to every customer and caller on the phone and every employee in the store. He tried to overcharge me and I think that he is a total psychopath and if not then he is the worst human being I have ever had the displeasure of having to interact with in a 10 minute span, possibly ever but definitely in the past few years or so. read more

Got myself a new pair, but got my 5 year old a pair for $19.99 and my 8 year old a pair for $14.99 They have just about every kind of sports apparel you could imagine at the most affordable prices. You can also bring in sports wear for credit. They will give you a credit of 40% of whatever they can sell it for. Not bad considering everything in there is really cheap. Great store! They buy and sell sporting goods. They have everything here from tennis balls and bicycles to weights and treadmills. Ooo, I even spotted a tandem bike in there this past weekend. Play It Again Sports has several locations so if they don't have what you are looking for at one location they can always call another store for you to see if what you want is available. They staff is extremely helpful and the prices just cannot be beat. I have bought so many things from these guys over the years and to be honest...as long as Play It Again Sports is around I probably will never go to a regular sporting good store again. I just discovered play it again sports on Irving Park and Ashland. They have tons of used and new sports equipment from hockey, bikes, snowboarding, skis, soccer, skating, etc.They also have FREE parking!!! We just scored some nice ice skates for $24 and they look brand new!!! And they're Jacksons!! I will definitely be coming here in the future since my little one is only 7 and she will outgrow a ton of gear. read more

I went in this store hoping to find an affordable bean bag-toss game. I did find them propped up in a cramped corner of the store. The games were homemade, and seemed to be poorly constructed. The prices were pretty high, so I decided against purchasing one. The salespeople were too busy yucking it up with each other to even bother to offer me any help. I walked the entire store--just to see what else they had--and no one even acknowledged my existence. The most offensive part about this store is this: they are dealing in stolen bikes! A man came in with a bike while I was there. The man seemed very rushed, was on a bike that was way too small, and was sweating profusely on a cool day. Within three minutes--and without requiring any ID--they gave the man a check for $80. Don't give this place your money! They are blatantly dealing in stolen property. Was your bike stolen? This is a GREAT place to check for it. Don't give your money to people who profit dishonestly off of other peoples' misfortune. Those of us who've had a bike stolen thank you in advance. read more

Ok here it goes.. I'll start by saying that this is the first negative review I've posted on yelp, and it's a shame that I have to. I've been to Play it Again a few times now, only for the bike repair shop. The first few times were non-events, but over the last 2 days Play it Again has frustrated me to the point that I have to say it - don't go there. I took my bike in to have the front derailleur fixed, and the guy I talked to suggested they remove it instead (I have a vintage road bike). No problem, he gave me a good price for the labor and said it would be ready that day. My boyfriend picked it up the next day, and the tire exploded as soon as he got on! The whole tire ripped apart. They had pumped up the tire pressure way to high. So, they replaced the tube and the tire, and he took the bike home. This morning, the tire was flat (the bike hadn't been ridden yet) so I pumped it up just to be sure. 30 minutes later, it was flat again. So, I took it back and explained that yet again, some part of the work they did was wrong. The guy I talked to said one word to me- "ok." While I stood there, another employee came in and asked what was going on. He then tried to blame my tire being flat today on an "old tube". I reminded him that Play it Again gave me that tube yesterday. After that, no one spoke to me again. I got my bike back, and hopefully this time the work has been done properly.. read more

Admittedly, I don't pay a whole lot of attention to sports and any help I can get is always appreciated. Enter Play it Again Sports. I initially thought this was a resale shop of sorts, but after a quick check of their Yelp reviews, realized it's more of a sports superstore (à la Sports Authority) but on a much smaller, more intimate level. Thank god! And yes, they do sell used sports equipment too. I must have walked in with a befuddled expression because I was asked if I needed help almost immediately (or, it could have been the 4-inch heels). In any case, said employee was extremely helpful and led me to what I needed in 2.5 seconds. They also have a parking lot! I'll definitely be back if the need for sports stuff arises. read more

STICK WITH CRAIGSLIST I went in to Play It Again with high expectations. I imagined a wide selection of slightly used sports equipment at great prices. It was supposed to be the place where I scored discounted golf clubs and tennis rackets that people used for a year before returning to their couch potato ways. Not so much. First I found a lot of brand new equipment at very high prices which was surprising. Second, a large portion of the used equipment isn't just used, it's ANCIENT. If you're dressing up as a 1940's tennis player for Halloween and need a wooden racket, then welcome to the promised land. You might be able to save a few bucks here and there, but for the most part prices are on par with Sports Authority, etc. I went in to purchase a softball glove, and the cheapest one they had (used) was about $35. I went to SA, and bought a brand new one for about $20 that suits me just great. Same with a bball...thinking I could snag one for $5 or so (like at other thrift stores), but the only ones they even had left were $30 +. I would say this place is good for kids stuff (they grow out of things quick and seem to have better prices), but I've never had much success. They do have a free parking lot just south of the building, which is a bonus...and seem to have a very large selection of new/used/late model bikes." read more

Thanks for the help, guys. I felt like I accidentally walked into a hoarder's garage rather than a store. Everything was so unorganized and I felt very unwelcome. There were a few people working but they didn't even look at me. All I wanted was a cheap pair of rollerblades. I thought I had found a good deal, but when I Googled the unfamiliar brand name I found them brand new online for the exact same price. No thanks. Dick's had better prices on brand new equipment, and the employees there are actually helpful. I wanted to support a smaller chain and recycle and get something used, but they made it so difficult and not worthwhile at all. read more

This place makes me real happy. I know PITS are all over the country but I still love the concept, I love the name, and I would love to spend a lot of time here because they have so much stuff. I've been to this location a few times over the years and just went last week for a new (to me) pair of skates. That most recent visit prompted me to share some love. The employee whose name I wish I remembered took the time to go through a bunch of skates to help me find the right fit plus quality boot and blade condition. Well, he found me a pair of CCM that was SUPER cheap, fit perfectly, and was in nearly new condition. It was within an hour of closing time when I went, but this dude couldn't have been more friendly, approachable, and full of great advice. Plus, he offered to sharpen the skates when I bought them. Standard? Still cool. I don't think it's fair to judge Play It Again for the merchandise alone, even though for me that's another 5-star rating. I've found incredible bike shoes, bike supplies, spare baseball gloves, etc. over the years. Good for me. But I think it's most noteworthy that the people here are nice and total human beings. Not pushy at all and there to help when you need it. Win win. read more

This is my favorite place in the city to shop for sports goods. We've found some hidden gems here such as a brand new tennis racket for like $18. We've bought everything from baseball mitts and balls, bike locks, bike baskets, golf balls, and workout equipment. They have great prices and the service is always great. Used bike superstore is a better name for this place. Ton of bikes if you're looking to pick one up, not much exercise equipment. The suburban locations seem to have more of a selection of exercise and sports equipment. They also have a parking lot which is always a YAY! for this area. read more

I had a play it again sports in my home town back in Michigan and i loved the place. Growing up I at least tried to play every sport, which led to a lot of sports equipment being needed. If you have ever played sports then you know they are not cheap. So the idea of used gear for a solid price is great. When i came to this play it again on ahsland i felt like a kid again back in Michigan. I was starting up an adult hockey team with some buddies and we needed everything (most of us had not played in 10+years). For the most part we got everything we needed here at a pretty good price. I found a pair of barley used skates that go for 200$ new for 40$. The staff is real laid back, but very willing to help if you ask them. When i was buying my skates the guy working was telling me how they used to be known for there lack of blade sharping and there owner had just bought all new sharping equipment and had all the employees learn how to properly sharpen skates. I skate once or twice a week and have been getting my skates sharpened here and have had no problem with my blades. they are much cheaper then gunzo's is also. read more

I had higher expectations coming here, trading in a 26" three year old Easton bat (good condition) my 9ine y.o Son had been using since six. We were also looking for a new glove to replace his current and soon to be outgrown mitt. I don't exactly recall what we paid for the Easton bat at Target but a quick google says anywhere from $29.99 to $19.99....aware of my budget friendly sensibilities pertaining to "youth" sports ie, knowing interest could last a month, I guarantee I didn't drop $30 on a bat for a Six y.o. First impressions: The place is fairly cluttered, tons o equipment packed in albeit somewhat organized by sport, obvi. We were greeted straight away and the rep told us the bball equipment was at the back so there we went. Take-aways (exclusively from the search for said bat and glove bc that's all we came for and looking at): Very surprised to see *brand new* bats and gloves for purchase at top retail prices, many of which I was shocked...40-50-70$ for bats! Play something else Again imo. Fine, we move onto the used goods which are right beside but at least separated from, the new. It took a while to find a bat in the $20 price range for what we were looking for and if not for me talking up this place to my son we would have just walked and called it a day. We take it to counter and as he's holding and messing about with it, there is a ton of black rubber on his hand due to the grip being completely worn down. We inquire at the register, it would need to be re-gripped, $5. Goes to look for the material. Nothing, they don't have the re-grip material. No problem, we need to go. $6 was given for the exceedingly better quality bat we had in hand but at this point it mattered not. My advice. Shop prior to coming as this exercise was a great learning experience. [X] All on me, take my part for not doing due diligence. read more
