First time visitor. We don't have these up in Central NY. We do have a spin off/variant that is close to where we live , but it's not Playa Bowls. This weekend while visiting family, we were treated to a trip to Playa Bowls. Bottom Line Up Front....I am a fan and I will be back. My only regret is that we don't have a Playa Bowls where I live. How have I never heard of this before?! When I saw someone eating one, I honestly thought it was an ice cream sundae. My daughter told me it was a tropical açaí bowl, and I had to try it. It starts with a base of frozen açaí (a superfruit), then they layer on granola, coconut, banana, and pineapple. Let me tell you--it was BETTER than an ice cream sundae. Well, to start off I found a strand of hair in my nutella acai bowl. It wasn't a long strand but a strand nevertheless. Anyhow, in terms of the nutella acai bowl, I'm not a fan. Something about the nutella not mixing well with the acai bowl in terms of flavor combinations. I enjoyed the cold brew though, unsweetend with oat milk. As a first-timer, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the variety of flavors and options, but Joel made the experience so much easier. This is a fun location! The art and decorations give a relaxed atmosphere. The bowls are good. I will say that you have to be VERY specific in your instructions, because they can take creative liberties when adding extra fruit or nutella (aka not adding it lol). It does take a while to make the food. I've been here three times, and every time it was just me and my friend ordering, and it took around 10 minutes to get 2 bowls done. Came here because a friend of mine wanted to get a smoothie post lunch Montclair is known to have parking headaches sometimes. Unless you work or live in area or snag metered street parking for .75. cents/hr - then it's not the easiest location to access I like the inside tho. Decorations and space. Lots of natural light during the day. Pumpkin spice season !!! So we tried the Pumpkin Pie Smoothie- small size. Very tasty and very thick/ heavy. I have been ordering from them on Uber Eats. I love their green juice, but every time I got less and less. I always get a large 20oz. Every time the cup seems smaller. The first picture is a 16 oz cup 60% full, second picture is the receipt shows that I've paid for a 20oz juice. The third photo is to put things into perspective for everyone, a 5.3 oz yogurt to the left and a 24 oz pickle jar when I paid for a 20oz juice, the fourth photo is the receipt shows my payment of a 20oz juice. A great addition to the Montclair neighborhood. It really hits the spot when I'm craving sweets after eating in Montclair but don't want to feel extremely guilty about dessert. It is my go to spot now. You'll know where to find me after lunch/dinner ;) Sometimes Playa Bowls is extremely crowded and you have wait quite some time to get your smoothie/bowl (good luck trying to find a seat), but other times, it ain't so bad. Bowl-wise, I've only tried the Acai bowls, I have yet to try the Pitaya, Coconut and Green based bowls. I guess I can make it one of my goals to eventually try all of them out. After all, they do have a Loyalty Card here :) Buy 12 bowls and get 1 free! What I love about Playa Bowls is there are so many options! Juices, smoothies, bowls, Harmless Harvest coconut water, you name it! Bowls start around $9 which may seem a bit steep for some but it is really filling. it's pretty much a meal in itself, I cannot finish one after consuming food beforehand. I like the ambiance here, although its nothing fancy, it somehow feels like eating in a restaurant on a tropical island. Gave this place a try because my usual go-to was closed. I ordered the nutella acai bowl without coconut flakes, + pinneaple, + kiwi. Order & delivery was quick. But all I got was a bowl of strawberries with coconut flakes. Playa is the new addition to Church St after Red Mango vacated the premises (much to my chagrin) - but it's nice to see that this is an equally, if not healthier, option for those with a sweet tooth. Playa Bowl offers juices, smoothies, and bowls with different fruit/veggie (or kale, mostly) bases. Between acai, pitaya and coconut fruit options, I tried both the dragonberry and the nutaya bowls. Although the bowls look small for the $9-$10 price point, with the fruit and granola it is more than filling as an afternoon snack or post-dinner dessert. The ingredients were very fresh and the bowls had an ideal balance of base fruits + additions. Extra toppings can be ordered for another 50 cents each. The ambiance is cute and West Coast-inspired - the typical Pinterest look you'd expect from a 'hip' new place in Montclair. Although some other reviewers believe the price to be reasonable, I still have to laugh at the idea that it's 'reasonable' to pay ten dollars for a bowl of fruit, even in Montclair. Fresh fruit isn't that hard to find, and the assembly line of workers make prep of these bowls a well-oiled process. It's a yummy bowl, believe me, but no way is the price point reasonable. It's expensive. But still, a yummy treat. If you come, know that since its opening the place has been jam packed mostly with high school aged girls that all seem to look alike to me in their leggings and Uggs, making me feel ancient - and making seating in high demand. It was much easier to take it to go and enjoy at home in front of the TV. I will come back as a special treat for myself. Maybe when I finally get my butt off the couch and start that exercise routine I've been saying I would do. P.S. Parking is a pain as this popular place is smack dab in the middle of Montclair's bustling dining/shopping area. I have my husband drop me off to pick up the order while he cruises around the block. Yup - came here again but only because my gf insisted. Personally I wanted to give Sweetberry a try. When we first walked in, I knew we were in for the worst experience ever. The music was so fucking loud that you could barely hear the person next you you let alone the names that were called when an order was ready. The kid in charge of açaí on this day was dancing up a storm in a desperate attempt to gain the attention of the cute cashier. He would occasionally glance over in her direction in an effort to see her super sleuth dance moves. We both ordered the the Pure Vida, sans honey with extra açaí. (It was almost 100 degrees out) What we received: About 5 tablespoons of frozen concentrated açaí with little to no ice added to break it up. 1 tablespoon of granola About $12 worth of blueberries (no doubt you guys are losing money) and a decent amount of sliced strawberries. I mentioned something to the dancing queen that we ordered extra açaí. She was happy to give us extra in a cup. This was before we realized it was PURE açaí concentrate. I ate the cup of açaí concentrate first and wanted to vomit. The strawberries acted as a buffer as they were less sweet than the açaí. When I went to eat the actual bowl itself, I ate all the fruit and granola, leaving the açaí. I'm not really too sure why the owner allows kids to run the place, but he does and it shows. Let me start my saying I've loved Playa Bowls in Montclair since it opened, but after today, it gets a one-star rating. I ordered an Orange Power smoothie and added strawberries. They charged 50 cents for the strawberries, but fine. Got the smoothie and it didn't have strawberries after all, but I didn't feel like complaining and waiting for them to remake it because I didn't have time to wait again. The bigger problem... I was drinking it and there were pieces I couldn't chew, but I chalked it up to maybe the core of the pineapple getting mixed in and just swallowed them scratchy and whole. Half way through, I decided to see what it was and took a few pieces out of my mouth... clear and stretchy... shredded plastic! I had been drinking PLASTIC for the better part of 20oz. I would strongly recommend not to go here! I brought a nico bowl and it had many pieces of white plastic in it, a couple very sharp. I call them and told them, and they responded, are you sure it is not coconut. They then said I could come back and get another bowl or a refund. When I got there all changed, I was told to take picture of it and send it to there HR in Montclair, I even had the bowl with me. I told them that I just wanted a new bowl and the reply I was told, is I can't just give you free food. I was embarrassed and mortified to be talk to like this. So I not only had no lunch that day as I was at work, but I got alittle cut from plastic, was chewing on plastic, was treated so very rude and wasted my time going back being told that she can not give me free food. I just left the store and I am shocked at the lack of customer service. I ordered my usual Coco Berry bowl but this time there was VERY little fruit but a ton of granola. I politely asked if they could add more fruit but the lady helping me stared at me for a minute and said "that's going to be extra." I showed her the bowl full of granola with very little fruit and she stared at me some more and proceeded to call out the manager's name. They both looked at me like I did something wrong. I used to go to the Reston Town Center location all the time and spent hundreds of dollars because I liked the bowls. However, maybe Playa is growing too fast, because the customer service is not what it used to be. They seem overwhelmed and rushed. Super cute place, I see how they attract a young crowd. It's placed next to an Urban Outfitters and has a Starbucks right across the street - great location in general considering all the other restaurant options in the area. If you're craving something sweet but you're trying to be in the healthier side this would definitely satisfy that want. I have not yet tried their poke bowls but their pitaya and coconut bowls are delicious. I don't normally like banana flavored things but this is an exception (a majority of their fruit blends have banana). Most options have a different combination of fruits with granola and honey. I would recommend the electric mermaid - it has pineapple, mangos, kiwi, coconut flakes, the pitaya blend, granola, and honey. I also tried the coco craze (i think thats the name). The coconut blend is a little more bland in comparison but the fruit on top definitely gave it flavor which it needed. I think the bowls are a little pricey considering the size. I sort of wish they had a smaller portion that was a few bucks cheaper. The size they have now is pretty filling and I normally don't want to finish the whole thing, it's not entirely "save-able" for later either. Changing my review from 2 years ago to a 2 star. I ordered from UberEats & realized our order was missing. I called the store to let them know and not even a "sorry" was said or any tone of apology. The employee said it wasn't her fault and it was her co-worker that made a mistake. She offered a free smoothie if I came and picked it up which totally defeats the purpose of ordering through UberEats. Before she hang up the phone she sarcastically said "have a good day". First of all lady, in times like this - the world doesn't need your sarcasm. You work at Playa Bowls & you're all a team. Your coworker's mistake represents all of you, you could've been more empathetic and apologetic. It doesn't hurt. Well - I sure hope it doesn't hurt you since you work in this industry. She gave no other alternative while other places provide a code or would suggest to re-order & they'll help out with the process. She said since I ordered thru UberEats I had to file a complaint thru UberEats. Mistakes happen all the time - we're all human but how you deal with that mistake makes a huge difference. A good solid acai bowl and a place I plan to frequent. I can't give 5 stars because I am biased and from California and there's something about the acai blend from my staple acai place that cannot be matched. But rest assured, this place is legit. Atmosphere: spacious. On early mornings they'll blast music loud. I didn't mind when I went once cause they were blasting Whitney and Broadway show tunes. Food: what I love about this place is that there is so much to choose from! They have acai bowls, pitaya bowls, chia seed bowls, green bowls, coconut bowls, and oatmeal bowls. Insane amount of choices! I've only ever tried the acai, pitaya, and chia seed bowls. The first time I came I had the tropical acai bowl. I will note that the coconut shavings here are legit. The acai blend was good but not as tropical as I had hoped (i.e. Lacking pineapple flavor). What makes me happy here is the chia seed pudding! I had the jetty and it was pure deliciousness, and totally filling. I really enjoyed the goji berries, and they're not stingy about the fruit! SO many delicious bowls to choose from! I will probably only visit for bowls (as opposed to drinks or food) because they are really amazing. Playa really fill their smoothie bowls with TONS of toppings to the brim. Makes for a great extra-filling breakfast/meal. I typically shy away from acai/smoothie bowl places because of small portions, skimpy toppings, and high price, but at Playa, you definitely get the opposite of that. So many options, but everything looked good! Your order is made fresh for you so it's easy to customize it exactly how you want. We shared the coco craze which, generally I would suggest each person get their own, but I wasn't super hungry, just more curious! Usually I am not a coconut person, but the coco base was really good! Very sweet and had almost a Greek yogurt texture. Layered with sweet crunchy granola honey and more fruit. Overall, a pretty solid option! Small seating area, and it definitely gets crowded on weekend mornings so be prepared! You can order ahead of time online to skip the line.
