I've only been shopping at Playclothes for a little over a year. I was actually just a fan of their facebook page for a long time before it occurred to me that I really needed to check out their store. Their fan page is my favorite. They post the most amazing vintage photos. I wanted to see if their store was as much fun. Well, they didn't disappoint. First of all, it's HUGE. I'm not sure how many rooms, but it has to be the biggest vintage store in LA. Their selection is incredible and I love how they tag the clothes by era. It's like being in a museum. You can tell they really put thought and effort into the presentation. Every time I go in it looks different. The prices are great. I always find something special. The dressing rooms are bigger than my apartment was in New York. Seriously spacious and comfortable. If you're lucky you'll get to meet the store cat, Tiger Lily. She's like a dog. She's so friendly and has the most beautiful green eyes. She's obviously loved by the staff. As for the girls that work there, well, I adore every one I've met. The manager must have been a runway model at some point. She's tall and slender and always looks like she's walked out of a fashion magazine. Pure class. I've only met the owner once, but she was so sweet. Not sure what accent she has, but she's definitely a Southern gal with all that hospitality. There's a lot of redheads there so I feel like I'm a member of the club when I go there (I was born a ginger). They're all super helpful. So helpful in fact that when my car broke down behind their store last summer, Julie drove me and my fussy 2 year old all the way home to Santa Monica. I love her and she's an amazing photographer too. I really can't say enough wonderful things about this place! read more

Amazing selection of vintage clothes in great shape, very well marked by decade. I found a pair of gloves for $12 to take back to NYC but if I had another hour without my husband waiting outside, I probably would have walked out with at least one coat, a jumpsuit and a pair of pants. Coffee shop down the block and a lounge chair out front for him to wait on was helpful! Cheerful staff. read more

Given that my grandmother has been in the used/vintage business for 30+ years, I have a natural eye for anything vintage. Me and my 7 yr old daughter finally stopped in for a peek two weeks ago. What started out as a " quick peek" ended up being an hour long trip. There are so many fabulous things to look at. The setup is gorgeous and well organized. The alluring displays of vintage hats, pearls, vanity trinkets, and then some is just, well, pretty. My daughter has a natural appreciation for "old items" as she calls it, and adores owning vintage treasures. We found two cute perfume atomizer bottles, from the late 60's. They were $10 bucks a piece which was fair. HOWEVER, the people working there as some other reviews state really are RUDE. At first, I couldn't tell a customer from an employee, as not one of them said hello or god forbid cracked a smile. For such a pretty store, you can't help but want to smile and just have fun. At least that's how I felt anyway. Of course, since my daughter was with me, I took that into account despite the fact that she is extremely well mannered and understands the word DELICATE. Otherwise, why would I take her in with me? No one wants to hear, "don't touch that" "put that down" nag, nag - while they're shopping. Especially me. Anyway, after a while the negative energy was just pushing us out the door. While I paid for my items, the cashier made me feel like she was doing me a favor by I dunno, letting me buy the items?? There was no talking whatsoever except for, I'll go ahead and wrap it for you. Um, gee, that'd be nice since they are glass bottles and I did just buy the only two in the entire store. My daughter even thought the cashier was in a "bad mood" Ugh, I hope I just went on a bad day. read more

On a positive note... this store is full of awesome vintage clothes and collectibles laid out and merchandised extremely well. The fact that they are overpriced on many of their items didn't bother me. What did bother me was the complete lack of service and smiles from the employees. When I briefly chatted with the obvious owner (or manager) you can see why. A complete bitch with the demeanor of a prison guard. The vibe was so uncomfortable and the employees so clueless about their stock, I will absolutely NEVER step foot back in their store. Too bad, it could be a winner! read more

This store has some great finds. BUT, while I was eye-balling the items in the glass counter I overheard employees sharing stories about annoying customer experiences. It was not nice and led me to believe that they would rather not be bothered by customers. I won't be back. read more

Ridiculously over priced- The merchandise is good- fab in fact. Top to bottom anything and everything vintage even furniture, dishes- etc.. So overpriced though. Go to estate sales- trust me on this. My other favorite places are , the good will, salvation army, etc. 'Skip the Jewish Women's Council thrift store.' Good stuff but no prices- she sizes you up and then gives a price. (no offense) - just not a bargain shoppers store. read more

I live in the area and really make a point to patronize local shops. I love antiques, vintage clothes and accessories, so I was really excited when Playclothes moved into the neighborhood. Today was my first opportunity to get down there and I was immediately impressed with the store and the stock. I WAS NOT impressed with the people working there though [from overhearing them discussing where they get their stock, I suspect some present were owners or part-owners]. I spent fifteen minutes in the store, and looked at a few nice pieces of vintage jewelery, but... no one working in the shop could be bothered to so much as return a smile or offer a "hello." ...and there were only a handful of customers in the entire shop. Who wants to spend money in a shop where no one can be bothered to simply say "hello" or return a smile to a potential customer? Not me. There are a lot of other vintage shops in the Burbank and Studio City areas where shopkeepers are actually very nice and pleasant to customers. read more

I loved the store it was great experience to go for the first time I didn't go alone I went with my husband to see if we could find anything for him and myself you know what we found great outfits for our wedding day and there was a gentleman in the store he was great very helpful and so kind that he helped us choose these outfits he knew the taste that we like and also what we wanted and if you see this I want to tell you thank you to the gentleman that helped me and my husband. read more

This is one of my new favorite vintage stores in LA! =] Beautiful interior and I absolutely love the dressing rooms! Check out the pics I added of them! Prices aren't the cheapest I've found, but were still pretty reasonable. I bought a 60's pajama set (the top I plan on wearing as a dress instead, hah) for $32 and skirt slip for $16. There was a pretty pair of beaded red dress heels I almost bought for $30 but decided I wouldn't have an occasion to wear them. I had no problems with the staff, everyone was super friendly to me. The inside is very well organized and not cluttered despite how much inventory they have. They have a mannequin in the back sitting and staring out at shoppers that kinda creeped me out a little bit, but otherwise no complaints on the layout of the store. Plenty of street parking it looked like, and there's a tiny lot specifically for Playclothes customers in the back with about 5 spots. read more

It is such a cool store with so many beautiful items but I've been in twice and none of the salespeople ever say hi or engage in any way. In fact, they give off a bit of an annoyed vibe. Bums me out. If they even just said "hi" I'd be excited about going back but their lack of customer service will keep me from going here again. read more

What a cool store. Now if only I was a size 4. I went hoping for more size 12s but alas only a few were to be had. Browsing through the different decades was very fun. I marvelled at the clothes from the 40s. The prices were on the high end, especially the knic knacks. It's worth a hour of browsing but don't think I'd go again. read more

I always thought this place was a lingerie shop or something when I'd see it every night across the street from my local bar (the Starlite Room). Recently I had to pick up some vintage clothes for a party, and someone reminded me of this place. Surprisingly, they have a cool collection of clothes for guys, and everything is separated out by decade. I picked up an awesome tuxedo shirt from the 50s, and a vintage 70s button up shirt. It's not as expensive as you'd think either. If you're looking to play around, you can't go wrong here. read more

Today was my first visit to Playclothes and I feel like a fool for never having been there before! I went looking for a HIGH drama dress without a high drama pricetag for an even this weekend. I got what I came for and more. Every woman working in the shop collaborated to help me find something spectacular. Everybody was a joy to shop with. They did not make me feel like a waste of their time when I mentioned that I was on a budget, they simply worked with it. I cannot wait until I have a few extra bucks to spare and something to get dolled up for so I can go back to Playclothes and have a blast shopping like I did today. $150 and an hour and a half later and I'm happily toting home a charcoal grey boyfriend blazer, red croc clutch and a fabulous gold bangle!! It's everything they say it is and more! The workers are very friendly and helpful. I love how all of the items are tagged with their respective era and everything is displayed so neatly. They have a neat little display case with Bakelite jewelry and I have some pieces that I might sell to them and they recommended an appointment. Huge store with an amazing selection of vintage for men and women mostly from the 40's-70's. You could easily spend over an hour looking at everything, and I think the prices are pretty fair for the quality. I especially love the hats! The one gripe I have is the weird policy regarding items in the window. Twice now, I've spotted something I really liked, and was told it wasn't in the inventory, and I had to be put on a call list when it was up for sale. Each time, I never received a call. I honestly don't understand putting something out (let alone in the window!) if it's not ready for purchase. I've never heard of a store doing this. read more

This is my GO TO for cool vintage accessories and Halloween costumes! The ladies & gents who run the joint are witty, helpful and fun. I could stay and play here for hours. This place is a wonderland of a gem. We were Mortisha & Gomez last year and I couldn't have found a better 1920s black pinned striped suit and fitted long black sexy dress! Playclothes has never failed to catch my eye when I'm looking for quality vintage clothing and acccessories. I love browsing through the inventory for hidden treasures, accompanied of course by the friendly feline (even though I'm a dog person). I'm amazed at the variety of items and the reasonable prices. The service has been surprisingly consistent--the women who work there are friendly and attentive, always making sure I find unique vintage apparel that fits well and is comfortable. During a recent visit, Julian greeted me with her signature smile and helped me find just the right outfit for a party I was giving. This is an *awesome* vintage store. After casing out approximately 15 vintage places in LA in the past two weeks, I can definitively say that their prices are reasonable and their selection is exceptional. I went looking for a 50s housewife outfit for Halloween, and left with the cutest yellow dress and lacy apron. They have lots of clothes for regular wear, and then an entire back room overflowing with costumes of all types. You will easily lose an hour of your life here. Get ready to be impressed! read more

The layout of the store is terrific. Everything is appeallingly displayed, and really easy to find whatever period or gender clothing you love. It's fun just to day dream and browse around too. I did get the feeling that the staff is not really interested in whether you're in there, or not. i.e. very disinterested and not too friendly. I guess they figure if you like it and you can afford it... buy it or don't, but leave me alone. They have super nice stuff (great jewelry and shoes too) that you can actually afford, so it's really worth checking out, but it's not a party to shop there. read more

I love this store! I have been visiting for years but I was finally in to see the new location on Magnolia Street yesterday. The interior is amazingly beautiful and even bigger than the last location. There is so much to see in here! My sister needed some obscure items for a vintage costume she is putting together and, of course, I found them. Playclothes has everything from stockings (in their original boxes), shoes, purses, hats, coats, gloves, jewelry galore, formal wear, day wear, bathing suits, slips, adorable vintage household items and more! Playclothes is the department store of vintage. One of my go to's if ever I'm in search for something fabulous. You can find anything from any era. I see a lot of people saying how expensive it is...It's not nearly as expensive as what etsy and some ebay sellers are these days. For me the quality and uniqueness is what places value on vintage. Fantastic shop! I love shopping here for my period piece films I costume design. Everything is so well organized, displayed very nicely, and clean. There is no weird vintage smell in the store, and the music for ambiance is fabulous! I also all appreciate how kind, and well informed the staff is! Not to mention the tags with the era on them are super helpful, and make shopping so much quicker, and efficient. The prices are very fair as well. This place is amazing. I have a Halloween party coming up and I was having a hard time finding something unique and not a piece of spandex that would set me back $100. This place has SO MUCH variety, their clothes are so different and beautiful, I spent two hours in there yesterday with my friend and we had such a fun time trying all the different options on, I even bought two costumes because I loved them so much and they don't rip you off. Not a big fan of vintage shops but this one changed my mind. The selection was impressive. Very diverse as well they had something for everyone. Found a vintage copy of my favorite childhood story "the velveteen rabbit" so that was an extra bonus for me. The staff was nice and helpful. This is a fun place to go shopping and i like how the store is arranged. Threre are different secitons. And don't forget to open up drawers you will find hidden treasures! The staff was helpful but you have to ask. I was looking for suspenders and they just got some in so I got first pick!!! I also found an amazing tie that still is in the original packaging! All super nice and cool people super super nice guy works there too. The prices were high if you are used to thrift shopping in the 80's for these items but it is nice that they have done the digging for you! I've been here a few times now and it's really starting to grow on me. The people who work there are very helpful and nice (even last minute on New Year's Eve day). They have an awesome selection of items, including jewelry, bags, clothing, and even knick knacks and a little bit of furniture. Simply one of the best vintage stores in Los Angeles. I spent almost 2 hours here looking at cute hats, dresses, jewelry and shoes. I was pleasantly surprised to also find authentic books and magazines from the 1920s- 1970s. Priced between $12-20, the magazines are a steal and are a fascinating look into the past. Also helpful was the way that the clothes are labeled with the decade they came from. The staff was attentive and pleasant and even offered me a frequent buyer card where I can earn points every time I come back to Playclothes. It's also open 7 days a week. read more
