An UPDATE from my previous review. I'm not sure if this store has a new owner or what's going on but whatever it is, it's not working. I used to love this place. I've been coming here for 6 years now and always felt they had a wonderful selection. As well as I always thought the women who worked there were truly great. Yet suddenly all of the employees have been replaced with much younger people and the quality of the vintage has gone downhill. The store which used to have a good selection of 1930s-60s seems to only cater to costume pieces from the 70s and "vintage" from the 80s and 90s now. To my surprise I found a men's costume shirt from the show Stranger Things shoved among the vintage items. I miss what this store used to be when it carried quality vintage items, and had staff who knew what they were looking at when you had a question. read more

Such a cute place and I will definitely be coming back because they had great clothing. The store was closing in about 30 mins, there were still about 15 people in the store when they shut off all the lights and said they were now closed. I had been shopping and had items in my hand, so I asked if I could still purchase the 5 items and one of the employees just said "nope". The thing that got me was that there was no "Last Call" or warning that they were about to close and to come up with final purchases. They really just kicked everyone out. I never realized how amazing this store is until I went in for the first time today. For starters, there is the infamous store cat, Tigerlily. The cutest little ball of whiskers there ever was and with her own throne to boot. My little pup, Paris, was with me and completely ignored Tigerlily and vice versa. Secondly, clothing is sorted by decade making it easy to find your favorite decade. They even have home goods, accessories, and tons of hat boxes. This collection alone is worth the stop by. Thirdly, it's best to go with an open mind because you never know what you might find. If you go in looking for this one specific piece, you might pass up so many treasures. I went in there just to browse and see what it's like in there and I walked out with a beautiful dress from the 1950s. read more

Plus I asked them if I could possibly rent just the props and not dresses since I don't want to be paying the full $80 just for gloves and fake pearls to go with the flapper look they didn't budge....I feel like Amazon is way better bang for your buck you could pay cheaper AND get all the accessories that you need will stick to Amazon or SheIn read more

This is fun store. They have a lot of costume and time piece costumes. I got some unique dresses here in the past. I didn't give it five stars bc I don't think the prices are great, but it's still a fun experience to visit. They have a cute cat that walks around. Less musty overall than most vintage. read more

I love this place. In all honesty, I've bought very little here, but even if you don't buy, it's a delight to walk through all the little rooms. It's like browsing through your grandmother's closet or your grandparent's attic, full of awesome vintage clothes and kitchenware and odds and ends and kind of creepy mannequins. This place is BY FAR the best vintage clothing store I have ever been to. The clothes are beautifully organized and tagged by decade and the prices are very reasonable. Moreover, the dressing room areas are absolutely perfect and spacious. This place is truly like stepping back in time and doing some wonderful shopping. I used to love playclothes, and I would always buy something. Friday, I was in the area and thought I would stop by. The sign said they opened at 11am, but actually they didn't open until 20 minutes later. It was so hot outside, and I could see employees inside. The least they could do is to walk over and tell me that there was a employee meeting. Walked in, and everything was so disorganized and cluttered. I literally found noting of interest which sucks because I wanted to buy something. read more

I'm a Vintage Diva and proud of it! I'm known for my addiction and have worked in a vintage store, modeled for vintage print ads, magazines, fashion shows, ebay; have a list of top vintage stores on here, and plain and simple: I wear vintage EVERY DAY. I adore this stuff. I used to shop at the old Playclothes location and was excited that they were moving even closer to me. (Actually, I think it's about the same distance but whatever). This new location is stunning: set in a corner building with a Victorian-molded interior (this was the set of a restaurant scene for the movie "Valentine's Day"); you feel like a princess or queen in your privy dressing room in your castle. (View my picture of interior). If you like architecture and vintage, it WILL take your breath away. Plus, now that they moved to this new location, Playclothes has expanded and took many of their pieces out of storage to finally display. As for the goods? This store has EVERYTHING and it is REAL vintage not vintage-inspired (which if you read my other vintage store reviews, you know I despise). Everything is clean, pressed, and of high quality. Of course the female clothing is in the largest supply but you will also find men's clothing and children's vintage -- which is rather rare at vintage stores to find children's clothing. The clothing is divided into decades with descriptive price tags and range from 50s prom and day dresses, 60s mod scooter dresses, 70s guinne sax, 80s prom, to aprons, shoes, purses, gloves, hats, costume jewelry, trinkets, household goods, blankets, etc. You can basically stock an entire household! And they have, because Playclothes provided much of the clothing and set design for "Changeling" starring Angelina Jolie. Prices are slightly above vintage standard but deserving of the quality ($20-$40 for vintage dress). Another great thing is that the "dressing rooms" consist of actual cute rooms that look like a bedroom versus the usual curtained corner of vintage stores. You feel like you are back in time and getting ready to go out. Service is also fabulous. The owners are just as kind as always even in this new location and they know their vintage (we've talked). Additionally, on Thursday nights, they feature a live band so you can mingle, listen to music, and shop. I am a child of the 90's. That means that when I was in high school, grunge was the thing...which also means that I've been shopping vintage (or goodwill) since I was old enough to buy my gas for 89 cents a gallon. That being said, there is a vast spectrum of quality when it comes to vintage shopping and apparel. Some shops are dingy, some carry obviously damaged clothing, some just pile a bunch of crappy things together and force the consumer to be a clothing archiologist. Playclothes is the antithesis of those types of places. This well stocked store is, hands down, the best vintage shop I have ever seen. Each clothing item has a tag which labels it's decade, a brief description, as well as it's price and the modern day size equivilant. The amount of clothing, accessories, homewares and jewelery is astounding. Not to mention the employees who are both helpful and knowledgable. I was on the hunt for a Derby Day outfit (and also in need of some retail therapy if I'm being honest) and found a lovely 1950's dress in my size (and being that I've been on the heavier side lately, that's hard to find). I found a beautiful pair of shoes from the 1940's and then asked for help with a hat and earrings. The ladies got to work and helped me find a great feathered hat and a pair of earrings that were perfect. All that, and under $175 bucks - which in and of itself is amazing. Needless to say I'm impressed and besotted with this place and will brave the horrible 101 traffic just to play again. read more

I had a 1920's themed birthday party to attend and this was the first place that popped into my head. I thought the clothes might break the piggy bank, but I lucked out. The clothes are labeled according to era style. A lot of the 20's dresses were adorable, but more than I wanted to spend at $75-150. I saw a cute black, beaded little number that would be perfect, but figured it would cost even more. How the hell this dress was only $55 beats me. It was perfect. They also have accessories such as hats and headbands. I wanted a headband, but it was over $50 due to the hand work and detail supposedly. Get creative and make one would be my suggestion. Buy a few black feathers from Michael's, attach some sequins and attach them to a headband. Voila! $5. Good vintage store for browsing if in need of Halloween costumes. Very impressed. A great vintage shop in a great part of Burbank, something not seen since the days of the Scarlet Dresser (yes, I'm that old...). A great selection of stuff, mostly women's clothing and accessories, housed in a beautiful location worthy of a visit on its own. On my recent vacation home, I discovered this place during a sunset stroll along Magnolia. Even though all I left with was a wallet (the most amazing, gold-metal-chainlink-sequined wallet ever - see pic taken at the Blue Room), I was thoroughly impressed by a handful of things: -massive selection -great use of space, organized in a way that makes you want to spend time exploring -no tired, irritated and too-cool looking teenage/twenty-something staff -very reasonably priced -friendly and attentive staff -though I found little for myself, I walked out excited to come back -it's a valuable addition to the neighborhood and it's growing rep as a vintage destination All in all, I'm very grateful they moved into the neighborhood and can't recommend a visit enough. read more

So the story goes...I arrived in search of a dress for a prom-themed party. My only inspiration was Andie (Molly Ringwald) from PRETTY IN PINK. I told this to the sales lady who directed me to the 80s racks. She was attentive, but not overbearing. When she left me to browse in solitude, it only took me about 30 seconds to locate the perfect dress: a black/lavender, lace/tulle, ankle-length, strapless Betsey Johnson. After trying it on, I revealed the look to the sales ladies who all applauded my choice sincerely. One suggested I get some black, finger-less lace gloves and a tiara to accessorize, so after making my purchase I skipped across the street to the Halloween store to complete my look. A note on sizing, which I hear can be complicated here...my dress is technically a 4, but I typically wear a 6. It fits like a glove. Just try it on...but don't force it! I didn't go to my high school prom, and I couldn't have imagined a more magical dress! This Saturday will be a night to remember...thank you Playclothes! read more

I love this shop. It's like walking back in time and there's a friendly cat here! This place is heaven. I could have very easily spent all afternoon here but I was with other ladies who were anxious for lunch so I did a quick scan of the store. I found my absolute DREAM of a skirt: red felt circle skirt from the 1950's with a snowman on it with "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year" embroidered on it. Golly it's just like I was meant to have it and it fits me like a glove. I'm sure it's handmade! I also got a black wool skirt that fits like a dream. They have all sorts of clothes in so many sizes and decades that I couldn't even conceptualize this perfection of a store. I gotta come back here alone so I can peruse at leisure! read more

The amount of beautiful items in this store is amazing! If I had all day to shop and try on clothes I would have. The ladies were nice and polite answering all my questions, they also have a great tagging system to let you know what era of clothing your looking at..The only reason they get 4 instead of 5 stars is because when it came to cocktail dresses they didn't have a variety of sizes. I understand the women of the 40-50's were smaller but showing me only 2 options was a bit depressing.. BUT the variety of every other type of clothing was incredible. read more

This place is GREAT! I went here a couple of weeks ago in search of some jewelry and various props, and walked out with a ton of stuff. The only reason why I didn't give them a 5 star rating, is because I wish that they carried more sizes...I know larger vintage sizes are harder to come by, but it couldn't hurt them to have a few more pieces for sizes 8-14. I lucked out and found a vintage 1960's romper that fit me like a dream, but most of everything else I tried on didn't even come close. (II'm a size 10/12). Most of what they carry is in sizes 2,4,6....they have some things are larger, but you have to hunt for them. However, their jewelry selection is lovely, and their hats, and furniture are even better. The women who run it are nice too! Definitely check out their place! read more

All the ladies working there are so kind and sweet and their selection is INSANE!!! I spent almost two hours looking through stuff and I still feel like there was a lot left to check out! I'm new to the area, and I'm happy to say I have definitely found my new go to spot. Plus, their prices are not at ALL bad for the product. Everything is sectioned by vintage year (50s/60s/70s etc) which makes it so easy to find what you're looking for. Also, most if not all of their stuff is genuine vintage! So expect to look for a bit before you find that perfect piece, but be assured that it's not a redesigned, modernized copy. 10/10. Great spot! read more

This place is amazing. So unique!!! It is worth going in just to get inspired by the displays and the amazing collection of antiques and vintage clothes. Amazing for period costumes, daily vintage fashion and accessories. Men's section is a smaller portion of the store BUT has a lot of really unique and hard-to-find items. Prices are fair and mostly in the same price range. The staff is very helpful, they can help you create looks, match and pair items, and allow you try things on. Although this shop has some reasonably prized items and is pleasant to look at, the staff leaves a great deal to be desired. I've been buying and wearing vintage and antique clothing since the age of nine. I have shopped across the U.S. as well as internationally. Now, I work as a costumer and designer for the industry. I'm always looking for pieces for myself and my clients. I live in the neighborhood and believe in patronizing small businesses. However, of the six or so times I have been in this shop, I have never been greeted with a "Hi" or given a "Thanks", even after I have made a purchase. Most times, they ignore me and won't even make eye contact or smile. They do like to talk about their customers at length once a customer has left. Today the two female employees went on and on about a customer who made a purchase that "they were glad to get rid of". Nice. They do have a sweet, very friendly and chatty kitty who followed me around for pets. As I neared the store front, an employee, hand on her hip, asked me if I was " done", (it was 15 minutes to their closing time). Yes, Playclothes, I am done. Good-bye. read more

Hi my name is Stephanie, and I'm a shopaholic. My drug of choice: shopping for amazing one of a kind vintage pieces that make me feel like a lady. It is all I ever think about. I dream about it, I wake up jonesing for it, just counting the hours till my next fix. I browse ebay at work, but it isn't the same. So when I cannot take it anymore, I make a visit to one of my local dealers. Playclothes happens to be my favorite, I would say, they are my pusher of choice. When I walk into the store, it is instant euphoria. 1,000 images of my ideal abode all decked out in vintage curtains and furniture, serving delicious vegetarian dinners on 50's era dishes, strutting around my place in a pair of pumps, a strand of pearls and the most gorgeous vintage apron you have ever seen. I have to catch my breath and remember, I cannot take it all home with me. The store looks like a home, everything is displayed in a casual but extremely organized manner. Each piece of merchandise is labled with the era that it is from, its size, any specific information about the piece and the price. There are few stores that take the time to make note of these things... especially the modern day size. When vintage shopping without my trusty tape measure in hand, knowing the size can cut hours off my shopping time. The men and women that work at Playclothes are absolutely wonderful, extremely helpful, and actually know about vintage clothing. The accessories section of the store is overflowing with hats, jewelry, belts, and anything else that you can think of to complete your special look. The prices are fair for the quality of vintage clothing that they sell. They range from in the mid $20s to a few hundred dollars, depending on what it is. So if you are a shopaholic like me, and you find yourself really needing your fix, make the drive out to Burbank and prepare yourself to spend some serious time at Playclothes. read more

I had just gotten engaged and my finace and I decided to run off to Vegas and get hitched. I was looking everywhere for a dress and came across Playclothes..... Ok here is the reason for 2 stars. When I walked in a little old lady was stitching at the counter on a dress. I asked her if she had a dress in a modern size 12 or if she could help me. Her response was "good luck, we don't carry anything that huge." One I am larger in the hips and bust, my waist actually curves in. 2) I am not huge, nor fat But I am a size 12 in dresses. Needless to say I was put off but I searched anyways. Another lady came up and asked me if she could help. I explained to her the situation and she told me how they organize the items (by year, not size). And that she would help me as much as she could. She promptly looked at a rack and then walked off. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars was because the 3rd lady working there actually helped me find dresses that worked, although none of them were what I was looking for. This place had a HUGE selection, but if you need something besides a size 2-4 (modern sizes) you might want to go elsewhere. Sad because I love my vintage clothing. read more

Vintage. Ahhhhh, just listen to the sweet way that rolls off your tongue :) Owning, rocking and loving vintage is like taking part in a magical dance of fashion, style, personality and zing. It's that all-encompassing label that says, "I appreciate the works of creative others and I don't bother with bullshit like trends. No sirree Bob, I am timeless, classic and cool and...my Daddy says I'm pretty, so there." What? Vintage is grand and great and if you are a fan of it, then you will love this store. As the other reviews note, this isn't the cheapest store in the world and for the most part they don't really have a lot of the specific vintage stuff that I collect like curvy girl A-line dresses, but occasionally you will hit fashion gold and when you do, oh yay yay yay, it is a fun time indeed. What's great about this place is that it's not just clothes. Newp, they have a great variety of trinkets, jewelry, cigar boxes, pillows, furniture, you name it and it kinda feels like you stumbled upon a really awesome yard sale, only pricier. I don't hit this store nearly enough and that's a shame seeing as how I've lived so close to it for so long, but I now hand it off to you, fine people of LA, enjoy the find! read more

This restroom is possibly the holiest of restrooms in the Los Angeles County area. The portraits of our Lord surrounding the throne will both give you a sense of peace and possibly stage fright as you take care of your human needs. How you do your business is seriously challenged when you're suddenly aware that Creator of the Universe is watching. 4 stars for this quaint wash room and spiritual awakening. read more

In the old location, this was my go-to place when I needed something special. I like the colored tags organizing system, it's not the cheapest vintage clothing store, but for the most part, the prices are fair. Since they moved to the new location I've been there several times and not found anything--that's okay, not necessarily their fault. It also seems the date tags are a little less accurate, the prices are high for some items with serious damage, and the 7 day exchange policy has been amended to All Sales Final, which just feels a little unfriendly. But... I know we're in a tough economy, and I understand small businesses have to do what they can to survive. I've felt some of the snobbishness that other reviewers have mentioned, but I recently complained about an unfortunate experience with a saleswoman (who actually was not snobby), and received the nicest, most professional, even a little over the top, written explanation and apology. She probably handled it better than I did, complaining on Yelp. Found a great dress on that visit (in perfect condition), and I will, a little sheepishly, think of the nice letter from the saleswoman when I wear it. read more

Color me impressed. I just got back from Playclothes... and I am now a fan of this shop. I spent 3 & half hours with my comrades going through dresses, hats, jewelry and shoes writing descriptions for the fashion show '30 years of Pin-Ups" that I am a dresser for and I would say 95% of the clothes we picked didn't have any flaws and the other 5% were very minor. Prices range from $20 to $175. The vintage is really vintage & this includes clothing & accessories from the early 1900s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s & some 1980s. Like any great vintage boutique, tags describing the garments & their approximate date are included... so nice! ** Note be sure you are aware of your bust, waist & hips measurement & along a tape measurer...because what you think is a size 4... could be smaller it's called vanity sizing darling! The store also sells vintage & antique housewares & furniture. Wanda the owner is very sweet and knowledgeable. **The store will be moving to Magnolia St in 3 months so get on their mailing list ! Will I be back? Yes so I can do some shopping for myself. If I could have I would have bought half of the rack we ended up with for the fashion show! read more

I was in Burbank for a car event and came across this cute store. It had some feminine dresses out front and I thought being a tomboy I might find some help with an outfit that might attract my husbands attention versus my jeans and a car t-shirt. Unfortunately, the two girls working the front counter never said welcome in. I thought well, they were talking perhaps they didn't see me. As I walked around, I made sure to walk directly in front of them, nope, never said a word and not even a good bye upon my exit.
