Maybe people have just come to accept the spacing between rows of seats, but I was in pain for most of the entire show because there's not enough room between rows for my knees to fit. Also, in the mezzanine, it was pretty much impossible to understand what the performers were saying, I don't know if it's the speakers broadcasting to the upper levels, or if it was just bad sound mixing for the entire theater, but just a very bad experience. read more

The playhouse square area is a beautiful area and the theaters are beautiful as well. The price for drinks and food are like movie prices but that's to be expected. I wanted to buy a t-shirt for my fiancé of the play we saw and it was $50. Come on! $50 for a plan jane t-shirt is terrible. I grew up in the burbs of Cleveland and lived there for a lot of years and yeah, it's great that they fixed up Playhouse Square, the theaters are beautiful, yadayadayada, now on with the review of my actual visit there. Went to the State Theater to see Bryan Ferry - a very nice elegant setting for a very nice elegant performer. First issue: getting from the preferred discount parking lot for the theaters (forget street parking in this part of Cleveland; you're lucky if you can find a lane to drive in that isn't designated for bus) to the actual venue to see the guy. The parking garages are in back of the entire Playhouse Square complex and right now they are rehabbing the walk way to get in, so you have to walk across a street, through a long tunnel, up and down some stairs, around corners, then through the beautifully rehabbed lobby of one of the other theaters in the complex (which is very nice to see), then through some kind of arcade/ mall (the shops of which were all closed, which I thought was stupid given that hundreds of folks were passing by on their way to a show) and finally into the box office area for the theater venues, of which there are several. Playhouse Square obviously realizes this is a long hike and has stationed various garage attendants, a policeman (at the street you have to cut across to get between garage and theater) and staff (inside the building) along the way to make sure no one gets lost, hit by a car, etc., and I appreciate that. I also had no problem with the long hike. But if I were wearing my super-high-heeled shoes for a fancy pre-theater dinner, or if I was arriving closer to show time, or if I was bringing my senior citizen mom to a show, it might be a bigger issue, so I thought I'd point it out. You need to arrive plenty early and anyone who can't walk a half-mile needs to be dropped off in front of the venue before you go park. I also don't think the refurbishment of the overhead walkway is going to shorten the distance much and it looks like it will still involve stairs. Based on what was available and the prices when I got my ticket, I opted for a balcony seat just a little to the right hand side. My seat was comfortable but I was a little dismayed that even though I was just a little to the right (not in the far right bank of seats), the stage was partially obstructed by a huge speaker hanging down the side. I had bought my ticket at the box office and no one warned me about a partially obstructed view. It worked out OK as the couple to my left decided to move to different seats or leave halfway through the show, so I was able to scoot farther towards the stage center, but I will be wary of any seat not right in the center for future shows. I also noticed that the balcony seats are not raked very steeply, meaning if you're a 5 foot 4 lady like me and a 6 foot man sits in front of you, his head is going to be right smack dab in the way of your view. Other than that, everything was nice and the sound and lighting were of the caliber I'd expect; also the theater's architecture and other details are very beautiful. The food and drink prices at intermission were reasonable too. My biggest problem was that the crowd, most of whom were people age 50 and up, behaved in some cases like total jerks and the staff didn't do a darn thing about it. Two people sitting nearby decided to have a loud shouting conversation (some old woman shouting in her old man's ear) while Bryan Ferry was singing, and the conversation was totally audible across the aisle and above the music. After this went on for an entire song I had to go across the aisle myself and tell the foghorn to lower her voice. Normally i would expect a staffer to be on patrol for that sort of thing - it's a theater, not an arena! - but like I said, there weren't any. Later in the show an obviously drunk person decided to do the drunk chicken dance in the aisle during several songs, which would be fine except they were bobbing and weaving all over the place and repeatedly blocking the view of the stage to an entire group of seats with their antics (to say nothing of, drunk people probably shouldn't be allowed to fling themselves wildly around in a balcony for risk of falling down the stairs or worse). A bunch of theater staff were standing around and doing absolutely nothing about it. I would expect this sort of thing at your average rock club, but those are usually general admission places where you can just move to some other portion of the club to get away from the annoyance. At a seated show with assigned seats, you don't necessarily have that luxury, plus you paid to sit in a particular seat and should be able to enjoy the show from there. I realize the Playhouse Square staff don't want to be perceived as unwelcoming, but please, be a little more vigilant so we all can have a good time. read more

The show was great of course and it's a beautiful theater (the Connor theater) but the seats were extremely uncomfortable. Worse than an airplane. I am a small person but my husband is 6'2 average weight and I couldn't sit back in my chair because him and the man sitting next to me had their shoulders in my seat. My back still hurts the next day. Everyone in our row was average size and we were all uncomfortable. I don't appreciate businesses that care more about making money than their customers comfort. read more

Love the playhouse... I go a lot. I went to see The Blueman Group. I enjoyed it.My great nephew went to for the first time. Age 4 he love it. It's funny because he was scared at first. We just saw Aladdin last night and it was amazing! I had such a good experience, from the speedy check in process, the fast concession lines, to my seat being easy to navigate to. I haven't been to the theater in years and it was just as gorgeous as I remember it being! Just bright and shiny and full of wonder. This is truly a Cleveland gem. One of the largest theatrical complexes in the country, featuring a variety of traveling Broadway companies and artists of many types. Also very busy during graduation season. These are classic theaters that have been restored and upgraded. They have great sight lines and acoustics. I love the attached parking garage in the winter. The only knock I had was the lack of dining locations nearby, but that has changed. Overall, worth a special trip to see a performance. read more

Can't believe we are only in Cleveland. I get the Keybank Series Tickets every year, and I am always amazing with the quality and diversity of what I get. The tickets are also amazingly reasonable. This is a beautiful theater. The seats were spacious, the employees are more than willing to be of help, it's small so seats aren't far from the stage at all. Acoustics were right on, not too crowded. The restrooms are clean but they are down a pretty good set of steps. It was a great show. read more

Went to see The Wizard of Oz at the state theatre. The staff were very friendly here. The theatre itself is spectacular. Very old fashion decor and close attention to detail. The seats in the theatre could be a bit more spacious. It did feel a little cramped. Perhaps back then people were slimmer than nowadays. The play itself was great! I loved it. Overall a great experience. Easy parking as well! It was nice to know that Cleveland has gems like this theatre district. read more

I love the the whole vibe of the Playhouse Square District. The theatres are beautiful, the entertainment top-notch, ample nearby parking (free if you are willing to walk a block or two). So why only three stars? Simply put, the staff! My mother and I have been subscribers for years and each year the renewal process is worse than the one before. The sales staff are pushy and demanding and not willing to even discuss other seating options. More than likely my last year with renewal, I would just as soon save the money and buy better tickets to the one or two shows that I really want to see. read more

Very nice venue. Historic interior with beautiful detials. Bathrooms are in the basement down a very narrow staircase, not enough (esp for the men which is unusual). Seats were comfy, sat in the 7th row and the view/sound was amazing. Parking was a nightmare however- it took us 20 to leave our spot let alone the next 20 min to make it out the exit. Would go again but choose off site parking. read more

"Do Not Buy Tickets From Out of Town For Playhouse Square Cleveland"... We have gone to shows for many years. The venue was 5 star, but there was no communication from Playhouse Square after payment was charged weeks earlier. Two(2) days before the show, we still had no tickets. No info on when or if the tickets had been sent. We were told to call back Mon. evening for a Wed. show to verify tickets when we were flying in from out of town. Customer service was dead serious. We love Cleveland, but no one should be treated in this manner nor should it be condoned. Patronize places that are courteous and just treat you nicely. read more

This is an old structure but well maintained. We saw the Christmas Carol show in the Ohio Theater - it is a relatively small theater compare to the other one where we saw the Nutcracker ballet show. Overall, the show quality was pretty good, but I wish the theater has more depth and heights - the seats are not elevated enough row after row so I had to shift my head left and right throughout the entire show to avoid the head in front of me. I think this is partially limited by the height of the theater. read more

The FAQ section of the Playhouse Square website indicates, "we ask...when possible, our guests remain seated during all productions." Why was this not reinforced during the Lauren Daigle concert Thursday night? It was obvious, after a few rude girls in the very front determined for the entire audience that everyone should stand for the entire concert, that a chain effect ensued. The people directly behind them needed to stand, causing the people behind the second group needing to stand and so on. During the concert many people chose to sit back down desperately hoping they would send a message to others who were too self-absorbed to get the message. The older ladies sitting behind me were obviously too uncomfortable to stand the entire concert so I chose to sit and spent most of the concert looking at the backs of people a couple of rows ahead of me. I would have have felt terrible being the cause of ruining the view for those ladies. I wish the people a couple of rows in front of me had the same decency. All it would have taken to prevent this situation, (a diminished experience for my wife and me), is a simple announcement prior to the concert reminding guests to please remain seated during the performance so that all in the audience are able to enjoy the show. If there are violators the ushers or security politely remind them to sit down during the show. If just the first few girls had been asked to sit down the rest would have followed. I realize this is a concert. But this was not a rock concert at the Q. This was a date night concert at Playhouse Square, a theater experience where guests are requested to remain seated. Playhouse Square should have policies and practices in place that accommodate guests who abide by that request. They did not take us into account during the Lauren Daigle concert. read more

Last night we saw wicked .we sat in row u balcony.the seats were so horribly close together that it ruined our show.it was hot tight no leg room you couldn't sit up straight.i,think I touched the man next to me more in there hours than my spouse I the last 15 years..I'm so disappointed it was so uncomfortable! This is an amazing theater district! Possibly the best one that I've ever been too. I've been to the Palace and State theaters one time each. The Palace to see a dance show and then the State theater to go see a singing group. Both are beautiful theaters and would definitely go back to each of them again and the other theaters too. They have added some beautiful changes around since I last saw a show there to the outside of the theaters like the chandler which I love seeing. I recommend everyone who lives in this area to go see a show there at least once in their lives. read more

I Wish I could give this No STARS. I have been in contact with customer service and ticket sales about a website issue. I have called both numbers to resolve the issue of server maintenance while trying to reserve and purchase tickets with a promotion code that Playhouse sent me three days before tickets were to go on sale. I spoke to four different people and still unable to purchase the tickets needed for the event. I asked if there was someone I could speak to about website issues and was told no one was able to do anything but I needed to wait to call when tickets go on sale. What is the point of early ticket purchasing if I have to wait to get tickets like the general public. Thanks for the USELESS Promo code that you sent out three days before. I will not be back to this location and will find every location possible to write this review. I am sorry that Poor customer service and your staff are not able to maintain the website for such a beautiful establishment. I am very disappointed. read more
