Beat Mexican food I've had in a while and of all places, Iowa! If you live in this town and haven't been to this restaurant, go.. NOW! The service was fantastic as I was greeted, sat and drink ordered immediately. Food was fresh, hot and delicious! Great portions and everything was seasoned wonderfully. Delicious! Very friendly service. Gave me plenty of time to look over menu. My Diet Coke came in a very large beer mug which was awesome. The chips and salsa were great! My meal was delicious and highly recommend the beans! The only thing that was just ok were the tortillas but that's ok the overall experience and the food were excellent. Love Plaza Azteca! The food is excellent and the owners and staff are always friendly and recognize us. They even humor me and let me practice my pitiful Spanish on them. My only complaints are that, between the patrons and the music, it is very loud and that the restrooms are right beside the food prep area which is uncomfortable! Wow! Great Mexican food is not that common. This was outstanding. Passing through town and happened upon this place. Hostess was wonderful. Chips with salsa and Pico. Perfect! THIS RESTAURANT IS WHY WE SEARCH OUT MOM & POP PLACES. We are headed across the country on our way back to Arizona. We searched for a small town that would be safe to stay overnight, one with low Covid numbers. We landed in Atlantic, Iowa. Among the miles and miles of corn fields is this awesome Mexican restaurant in the middle of nowhere. Plaza Azteca is doing everything right. We had the Carne Asada and the Azteca favorite #47. The homemade tortillas top it all off. Everything was excellent. It was so good we couldn't stop eating and ultimately had to roll out to the car. The food and service were excellent. The people in this quaint small town have a real gem in this restaurant. If you find yourself driving through IOWA, stop in Atlantic and check this restaurant out. It is worth the trip. read more

I have driven by this place many times, little did I know such deliciousness resided within the walls of this brightly colored little restaurant. I was dragged here by my daughter, who insisted that we order the queso sauce. Cheese scares me; I flee from cheese as many would from a hungry mountain lion. Or a Jehovah's Witness. We were seated right way, into a festive booth, the table was a bit wet, and I felt as if the neighbors in the middle of the aisle might ask if they could share our ordered queso sauce; thankfully, this did not happen. One thing that immediately stood out were the number of patrons with giant margarita goblets in front of them. Had I died and gone to alcoholic heaven? I am not sure, but I feel this restaurant is where all the serious midweek drinkers go, as the place was PACKED. We were brought hot chips and salsa, unfortunately, we also had a bowl of queso. Our waiter was actually the owner of the restaurant, a delightful man, very welcoming. I was put off at first, as he addressed me as 'bonita'. Spanish is not my first language, nor my second, or third, for that matter. "Did he call me an eraser?" I asked my daughter, who has taken two whole years of high school Spanish, and is, indeed qualified to tell me whether or not I should be insulted. "He called you pretty". I ordered the carne azada, (slices of marinated flank steak, grilled over charcoal, served with guacamole, rice, beans and tortillas) which could aptly be renamed - 'So This Is What Heaven Tastes Like'. Biting into my perfectly seasoned steak tasted like eating a heaven cloud. Do not question my sanity or judgment on this - I'm going with heaven cloud. Our waiter checked on us often, dropped words like 'hermosa' and 'deslumbrante', which I incorrectly translated as 'sock' and 'penguin', much to the dismay and embarrassment of my queso eating daughter. We were lured into clapping and general merriment, as there was a birthday person present; all of the margaritaey people (of which there were a plethora) were given these shot glasses of liquid disguised as milk with chocolate sauce, but were actually something with rum. I wondered if my middle seated neighbor who earlier eyed my queso sauce would perhaps give me his free rum milk. Alas, that was not the case, and I had to be content with putting the remainder of my meal into a take away box. Did I mention the portions are quite large? Look out for me in future installments of 'My 600 Pound Life', as I plan on sampling much more of the menu. I'm not saying it's going to be pretty (hermosa), yet it will be delicious. read more

Drinks are great! Food? Well let's just say you won't find Mexican food this good 98% of Mexican restaurants. I live in Texas and worked in all the states. I'd put this Mexican restaurants in the top 1% no matter what you order here. By far there's nothing better in around to eat at and if you're a Mexican food lover this is beyond just good compared to most what you have tried. Ever! Just go try it. read more

We were in town to celebrate my mom's birthday. She had heard good things about Plaza Azteca, so we decided to try it. The team quickly tended to all six of us and delivered delicious chips and salsas. They also returned quickly after taking our drink orders. They're not messing around with the drinks here; they pack a punch, so be aware :) We all were pleased with our respective entrees, including a couple of nice vegetarian options. They all were quite generous in size. Our waiter heard us mention our mom's birthday, so he brought tequila shots for everyone at the table. As if that wasn't enough, they also brought us several complimentary desserts to celebrate. On a return visit, I was as equally impressed. Super cute little place Downtown with the best food you'll find in Atlantic, Iowa. The chip service is a little something different, serving cabbage & traditional salsa - we loved it. The margaritas are strong and smooth. Ask for the Top Shelf Coconut on the Rocks...I think I could skip the meal for a few more sips.
