I stopped in on a Sunday with my sister after some thrift shopping. We were intrigued by the brunch menu (I should have snapped a photo of it!). Anyway, there was no wait and the restaurant was really quiet, not many people there which I do hope they're busier other days/times cause this is my second visit and I enjoy the food. Walking it makes me feel like I'm at a resort it's decorated so beautifully. So we ordered the dulce de leche french toast & I believe the other was a chilaquiles, that was chips covered with queso fresco, salsa, onions, a fried egg, avocado & we picked birria for our protein. My wife and I went here on a Saturday night. We were seated right away. I ordered the Modelo Especial. The beer was the right temperature. My wife got the skinny margarita. The drink was very cool looking and a large size. She said it was very good. Our waitress came over right away with tortilla chips, salsa and a white sauce. The chips were perfect. Sometimes they can get greasy but these were very good. The salsa was amazing with just a slight heat to it. The white sauce was very smooth and delicious. I ordered the seafood enchiladas. They were cooked to perfection. The seafood was cooked just right and the sauce was very good. To me this was a very light dinner. Hit the right spot. The rice was a white rice. It was very good. My wife ordered the chicken chimichangas. They were cooked perfect. She said the rice was good along with the beans. We had the Tres Leche chocolate cake. It was very good and the portion was very big. The interior of the building is decorated very cool. It feels just like if I went to Mexico and went to a restaurant. The music was a little loud for me but it did make you feel like you were in Mexico. We will be back to try the many other items on the menu. read more

Great addition to town in need of restaurants. Swanky, upscale atmosphere with loud Latin music bringing the energy. Large menu and drink selection--very aesthetically served with flowers and such. The portions were not very big given the pricepoint, but very delicious. Highly recommend the El Jefe enchiladas--tender and flavorful carne asada steak drenched in a rich, savory corn sauce--reminiscent of a béchamel. Plaza Azteca is worth the hype! This is definitely one of those places you come hungry and wanting to order everything off the menu. We kicked things off with tableside guacamole, made fresh right in front of you, which already sets the tone for a great meal. The lady who prepared it for us was so sweet and did a great job with the guac. We tried the birria tacos -- juicy, cheesy, and perfect for dipping straight into that consommé. Definitely something I'll be returning for. Everyone's heads turned for the Texas fajita which came out sizzling with chicken, steak, and shrimp and smelled insane before it even hit the table. The piña loca was a standout -- a grilled pineapple stuffed with chicken, steak, peppers, onions, and melted cheese. Sweet, savory, and honestly so fun to eat! For drinks, we kept it interesting. Aclassic old fashioned, plus the cazuela that comes with a mini Corona and a mini Patrón bottle... talk about a good time! Since it's the holiday season, we also tried their festive drinks: the polar espresso, peppermint margarita, holly jolly hibiscus, and a Mexican hot chocolate that felt like dessert in a cup. After months of anticipation, the Plaza Azteca in East Windsor finally opened this past Monday. We went there for dinner today. Everything from the food to the service to the overall vibe of this location was wonderful. The complimentary fresh chips and sauces were nice. The chips were so good that I indulged a bit too much before my entree arrived. For dinner I had the Vegetarian Tacos. The well seasoned Soy coupled with the onions, mushrooms, poblanos and guacamole was simply phenomenal. The entree came with a side of beans and rice. I truly enjoyed this meal. My husband ordered the Burrito Texano. It was stuffed with a combination of chicken, shrimp and beef. He found it delicious but perhaps too much protein. I will definitely be back! read more

Not over or under, I was simply "whelmed" by the new Tex-Mex Plaza Azteca in East Windsor. The atmosphere still borrows much from the former Charlie Brown's location with dineresque boothing and dark wood accents but it's the service here that'a head scratcher. Entrees that arrive five minutes after your appetizer forcing you to set one or the other aside. I hate feeling like I'm "on the clock" especially in a half empty restaurant. And oh yeah, the food itself was very good but it was hard to notice through the rush hour service. Here's hoping they figure it out. Three optimistic stars. read more

Plaza Azteca recently opened up it's East Windsor location after what seemed like years of renovation and remodeling of the former Charlie Browns which sat vacant for quite some time. The interiors are done nicely, with modern and trendy touches (which is considered quite fancy for East Windsor). It fulfills a much-needed gap as there just aren't many decent sit-down Mexican eateries with a bar in this part of New Jersey. If drinks with fancy presentation are your thing, then you're in for a treat here. They do have a list of daily specials, but their Taco Tuesday offering of 10% off specialty taco dinners seems kind of weak compared to competitors as those meals run $19 and up. Meals start off with complimentary chips and salsa, which is always nice to munch on. The chips (3.5/5) were served warm, and came with 2 types of salsa. We also got an order of the cheese dip (3.5/5), which was decent in quality without being overly cheesy and generous in portion size, but at $11, probably something I wouldn't order again unless sharing with a larger group of people...this is an item where they should offer a smaller portion for $6-7, and keep an option for a large size at $11. For meals, we got the chicken quesadillas rellenas (4/5), the pollo asado (4.5/5), and the vegetarian fajitas (4/5). The meals came out in less than 8 minutes after ordering which caught us a bit off guard, but all the food was filling, fresh, and flavorful. While it wasn't gourmet food, it was well above average and right in line with what I look for when it comes to Mexican cuisine. The waiter said we can swap out fries for rice and beans for the quesadilla meal without any additional charge, but the fries (3/5) didn't really have much taste to them, despite being crunchy. Service (3.5/5) was friendly, but I was a bit irked being overcharged for the quesadillas. It turned out they added an extra $1.50 for chicken over the $16.50 listed menu price for the quesadillas rellenas, which are listed as including a choice of chicken or beef. When I pointed it out to the waiter, he insisted there's an upcharge for meat even though it's clearly $16.50 in the menu. There is a listing for the quesadilla ranchera in the menu which is broken down by price depending on what kind of meat is chosen, but that isn't the case with the quesadilla rellena based on the menu pictures fellow Yelpers have shared. While paying $18 for the quesadilla rellena with chicken isn't going to break the bank for me, the disingenuous pricing will make me hesitate before returning and probably won't have me recommending Plaza Azteca to others, which is a shame because it was an otherwise enjoyable meal. I just wish they were more transparent with accurate menu pricing rather than resorting to petty upcharges and not owning up to it when I pointed the menu price discrepancy to them. read more

Let's go! - Good to have a new bar option in this area - Lots of staff + friendly/caring service - Plenty of drink options and everyone at my table seem happy with their selections - Chips with salsa and IDK what kind of white dip were perfect (I ate the whole basket myself) - Everyone at my table was happy with their dinner choices; as was I (grilled chicken with spinach) Yes there are some kinks that need to work out, and it didn't disrupted out plans. Prices are TOO HIGH. Bowl of soup was something like $16 dollars and trio of pork tacos were like $20. No offense, but even places like Meximodo in new Brunswick area with a larger footprint and amazing decor don't charge that much. I think owners didn't do their research about the east Windsor and Hightstown areas but this isn't NYC level restaurant or location. Food was a bit bland, but sauces on top were used for flavor. Had carnitas tacos and fish tacos. Mahi mahi fish was very dry. Chips and salsa were decent. I actually visited here after I tried another new place in trenton the day before called Toro del Fuego (all you can eat Mexican) and that place had AMAZING well seasoned food and meats, and all the sides were fantastic. Plaza Azteca delivered a great night out. The Spanish music set a warm vibe that made the place feel alive. The coconut Margarita stood out, full of flavor and easy to enjoy. I noticed other drinks coming out of the bar that looked just as tempting. The complimentary chips and salsa were fresh and tasty. The tableside guacamole was the highlight. You can customize it, and the result was incredible. I ordered the fajitas, and they came out hot, well seasoned, and generous. Our server, Jesus, was friendly and attentive. The food here is great, and I love the specific vegetarian section to the menu. The drinks are very good too and they have a lot of great weekday/happy hour deals! I had Veggie bowl and spinach enchiladas, both were good. Had classic marg as well which was pretty refreshing. Overall, super happy to have a top notch Mexican restaurant within a mile radius of my house. Stopped in for lunch to see the longest anticipated restaurant that replaced Charlie browns. Aesthetically the place is beautiful, they have a great bar area the decor is very chic. The waitress was very nice and attentive, which was expected as we were the 3rd table there. The complimentary chips were perfectly crunchy the salsa was ok a little too watery for my taste buds and could have used extra flavor. They also serve a white ranch style dipping sauce which was probably the star of the show. For our meal I ordered the lunch portion birria tacos and the chicken chimichanga. The birria tacos come 2 in a lunch serving with the consume which was delicious. In my opinion the plate was missing something else small rice or salad not sure but something. The chimichanga had a very good cheese sauce on top the chimichanga itself was small and wasn't crispy at all. This plate was served with rice and refried beans which were too watery for me and should have been served in the plate a little different maybe in a small bowl/cup. I ordered a small side of guac which was good. We ordered 2 drinks which I enjoyed very good, the Paloma mezcal and passion martini. Lastly the dessert which was highly disappointing, it was suppose to be tres leche but the cake was extremely dry and dense with strawberry and whip cream in the middle and a cream cheese Icing on the outside. I came here with my family after hearing a rave review from my father and he was right, it was an excellent experience. The atmosphere was bright, welcoming and fun and our waiter Anthony was incredibly attentive and friendly. It was a slow night because of the weather but our food came out very quickly. All of the portions were quite generous with enough to take home for a second meal. Chilli Rellenos was cold, soggy and a mystery! If I didn't know what I ordered I would not have guest it was a Chilli Relleno!! Beans were watery and a mess on the plate. Put in a small bowl! Chicken frittata was not sizzling and only warm. Chopped in smaller pieces than we are used to, again poor presentation! A sizzling plate should draw attention when being served. Do better Plaza Azteca! As proud full-blooded Mexicans who have enjoyed authentic Mexican cuisine throughout our lives, we were excited to try this establishment. We waited two years for it to open. Given its name, "Azteca" which resonates with deep roots and our heritage, we expected rich authentic favors. Mexican food is made with love and quality ingredients like other beautiful ethic cuisines and if it's not you definitely taste the difference! Plaza Azteca unfortunately disappoints. What we ordered: App: Tableside Guacamole (very good) & Queso Fundido (not good; they used cheap nacho cheese instead of Queso Oaxaca/ Chihuahua and was not served with tortillas. Main 1: Chile Rellano plate, came with only 1 small Chile dressed with very little sauce that lacked depth, a scoop of Spanish rice that was just ok and 3 flour tortillas that were not handmade, No beans served. Drinks: Horchata was not naturally crafted. It seriously tasted like watered down cold milk. Sadly, you could taste the powder used to make it. Main 2: Mole enchiladas filled with spinach plate. Came with 3 enchiladas, 3 pieces of fried plantains, a scoop of white rice. Mole is such a special sauce, it dates back to the indigenous. When made right it is velvety smooth, nutty, spicy, rustic, hint of sweet and so much depth. Sadly, this mole was pasty and sweet. The enchiladas had no cheese inside just sautéed spinach and very lighted dressed in this mole sauce. Not good. However, the fried plantains were delicious. The white rice lacked favor. No beans served. Drink: Jamaica (Hibiscus). Again not naturally crafted. Overall: Ambiiance is beautiful however the food / drinks/ portions not good especially at this price point. BEWARE: Ensure you are getting properly charged. My husband and I visited the new restaurant on December 22nd, late lunch. I had the Burrito de carnitas 18.50 and he had Burrito Fajitas (steak) 19.50. The food was good and the service was fine and I would have rated this 4.5/5. However, we were over-charged for our meals by 1.50 each. It wasn't a service fee or a credit card surcharge, just each meal did not reflect the charge that is on their menu. I didn't even realize we were overcharged until we got home and I didn't feel like calling or making a huge deal out of it. I just simply will not go back. Six old guys came to try out the new Mexican restaurant. We had a great dinner.....hard to have the six of us all pleased at the same meal. Everything was really good, no food complaints at all....amazing. Service was excellent. Our waiter was really professional, despite having to wait for us to make up our minds.....he was cool and helpful about the menu. We will return. There always has to be something to improve....we were seated in the bar area and the music was so loud that we had to shout to each other to be hear. Two stars because the bar itself looked great and I appreciated the atmosphere. Do not get the combos. You might as well go to Taco Bell because that is the level of quality you will be getting. The chicken quesadilla was so overly salted I could not even eat it, and the food overall was greasy. We were disappointed because we had really been looking forward to this place opening. We are going to give it another shot and I plan on trying one of their signature burritos or main entrees in hopes that they are better than the combos. As for service, our server was very sweet, but it was clear they did not know the menu and may have never served tables before.
