Lovely, authentic, and quick service. A perfect spot for lunch or a quick dinner/takeout.

    Chicken tostadas (f'ing amazing)

I bookmarked this about half a year ago when I stopped nearby for ice cream. With so many great Hispanic options close to home I didn't have an urge to venture so far for tacos etc. But a few more 5 star reviews and the fact that I mentioned it to a coworker had me itching to try it. The online menu was enticing but I had 2 things in mind, tostadas and steak tacos. I arrived to a small shop with about 6 4 seaters all well spaced apart. A few were occupied at 12:30. My order was almost ready but I couldn't help but notice one diners entree, hominy in a yellow sauce with fried fish I think, even though I'm not entirely sure what it was, I want that next....... Curiosity got the best of me and I looked at my haul in the car. Good thing a phone call interrupted any idea of sampling it. Once home I dove into the tostadas, three huge homemade tortillas with a layer of black bean, grilled chicken and then topped with crema, cheese, guacamole, lettuce, onion and tomato. I added the green sauce they provided. I've had a lot of very good tostadas lately, but these were better. Thicker tortillas held ingredients better, but you ARE going to get messy eating this. I saved the tacos for dinner as they tend to reheat well. They used the same homemade tortillas and these were golden brown, the steak was tender with some char too. Included were condiments of sour cream, pico de Gallo and guacamole, nice touch. Both items are currently my favorite version of these dishes. I hope that this amazing restaurant can thrive in this little town, and with its more well known competitor a few doors away. You must be pretty confident in your cooking to open so close to an established business. I'm confident I'll be returning very soon!

    In a nutshell-steak and eggs 2.0.

The standard that I always judge a better Hispanic restaurant is-how good are the beans? If you haven't dined at Rudy's in Hightstown yet, get yourself there! Enjoyed an amazing appetizer there for lunch which portion wise I could only finish a third of and ordered a side of their Red Beans. Came in a little cup with diced potatoes and the delicious broth the beans created as they had simmered. The beans alone are enough for a return trip. I had the Papusas with Queso con Loroco which also came with a side of carrot and cabbage slaw-delicious. My date ordered the Chilaquiles with steak and eggs. So good!! Atmosphere pleasant and a lovely waitress. Two thumbs up!!!

I came with both my son and my daughter. Very nice breakfast. People are nice, and friendly. Me and my daughter also take out order for her boyfriend. He likes too. We also found street parking not far which is nice for winter.

The worst food I had in my life. It was bland and their rice and beans had no flavor at all. Would not go again.

Food was okay. I personally think it lacked in flavor. Great portion sizes and great service for take out. I would definitely try it again.

It's took me a long time to finally check this place out. I knew about it, and I even knew where…read moreit was supposed to be located, but I'd driven by it a thousand times without going in...largely due to the very small sign located over the location. I didn't actually realize it was where I wanted to go until I was parking in front of it. As mentioned in other reviews, the dining space inside is small and very basic--which is fine. The portion of the store selling Mexican food staples is in the front as you enter, and the handful of dine-in tables are located at the back of the store between the store's aisles and the kitchen counter. What finally got me there to visit was that it was open for breakfast, and while a lot of places say they're open for breakfast, opening up at 9AM twice a week doesn't qualify. El Sabor Oaxaqueño 2 is open for breakfast most days at 6AM, because they serve people who are working their butts off and who need a good meal. The breakfasts at El Oaxaqueño 2 serve that need. My Chilaquiles Verde were spicy, but not super spicy, and it was served with rice and black beans. My carne asada was an addition as were my fried eggs. You can also get chicken breast (pechuga) or a red sauce if that's more your style. My wife's Huevos con Chorizo were very flavorful and very filling. They were also served with rice and black beans, along freshly made tortillas and a stick of cheese to crumble over your meal. She was only able to finish off half her plate, and we took home the rest. Our next visit was for dinner, and because I couldn't decide on what I wanted, we split three plates between us. First up was my Tacos de Tripa. I asked for the tripa (pork chitterlings, not tripe) to be well cooked so that it was crunchy, and they served them up just as I like them. They were topped with chopped onion and garlic, and once topped with the spicy green fresh salsa, we gobbled them down. The tortillas were freshly made and had a nice texture. The next dish was the chicken enchiladas en mole. Four enchiladas were well stuffed with white chicken meat then bathed in flavorful mole and served with rice and beans. Thankfully, it wasn't topped with a ridiculously huge glob of melted cheese. Last was the Quesadilla--not your Mama's quesadilla either. It was huge, and it wasn't as cheesy as the quesadillas the average person knows. Inside it was stuffed almost like a taco with big pieces of shrimp in one half and carne asada in the other. There was cheese, but cheese was not the star as it is in the average quesadilla we're all used to. It was good, and we both enjoyed it--it was just a surprise. The place is far from fancy, but they serve real food, and it's real good.

My first trip to El Gallo Tropical was to try their fish tacos as part of my goal to find the best…read morefish tacos in/around Hamilton Township. I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.
