My whole life whenever I go to the dentist even with Novacaine it would always be some sort of little pain when drilling was almost done. Dr. McKeeman and the staff were outstanding. My teeth were so bad I needed to get a cleaning twice as well as replace a filling and the bridge. But truly amazed me is the sophisticated equipment now it takes detailed pictures of your teeth as well as your jaw. The filling replacement was totally painless, as well as prepping for a crown. Husband was provided with a treatment plan to replace a bridge that only included the removal of the old bridge. Wasn't until the old bridge was removed and he had no option to turn back because they removed his tooth. Did he find out that an additional $5000 would be billed to him. There is no way we would've moved forward without planning for this type of expense. The response that I got from the front office staff was that the treatment plan is only an estimate and they had no way of knowing that our insurance would only cover $1000. I just can't believe that they wouldn't have provided us with the entire treatment plan and or made a recommendation that we follow up with our insurance. I have been going to this office for years and the service has gone downhill. It used to be a place that I would consider family and now it feels very transactional. I can't believe That they could bill us $5000 without letting us know that that could potentially be the cost upfront. Doctor Johnson is great - this was just an awful experience. read more

I've never left a negative review but felt it was necessary as I wish I'd read a review like this before becoming a patient at Pleasant Family Dentistry. I had a crown put on my tooth at the end of 2021. I immediately had pain and sensitivity that was never an issue before the crown. Obviously, some temporary sensitivity is expected after a crown, but the sensitivity and pain persisted. I had to go back to have the crown completely replaced and also revised several times. Eventually, they started shaving away at healthy teeth surrounding the crown to "fix" the issue. I knew that I needed to switch dentists and am so glad I did because I've since learned that is not normal and should never be done (shaving away at perfectly healthy teeth), and especially in my case. It was not necessary at all. They were very dismissive and rushed. In my experience, they value money more than a patient's well-being and oral health. I would not recommend this practice to anyone. I would however highly recommend Biological Center for Dentistry in Bluffton, SC. You will never find a more caring and knowledgeable staff who wants to get the root cause of oral health, and not just slap on a bandaid fix for the sake of $$$. This was my first trip to the dentist since moving to Charleston. The experience here was great from start to finish. Walking in, as a new patient, I was greeted with a new patient board with my name on it (nice touch). They proceeded to tour me around the facility which was amazing! At every step of the way, I felt that making me feel comfortable was of the utmost importance. The examination was one of the most thorough I've ever had. They took their time which I appreciated. I'm not a negative person & this place caused me MORE ANXIETY, EMBARRESSMENT, & UNECESSARY time back & forth. Ive never experienced anything like this. All I could think is , oh sure all these happy go lucky people in here coming for their cleaning WITH INSURANCE, of course the staff will be nice! You call & 1 of the 10 $ collectors up front are SO EMPATHETIC & KIND. Get there, holy moly, the worst experience EVER. It's literally Jekell & Hyde. They care on the phone, once you get there forget about it. There were several HIPPA issues I don't think they r even competent enough 2 get, that were completely violated. They caused a worse problem, did not want to fix it (bc i paid out of pocket up front) & send me elsewhere. What? No the doctor who made my situation worse needs to look at HIS WORK! AWEFUL.. I had 2 go & get it fixed elsewhere. I was literally lied to 2x, & by the second time I called the woman out in front of everyone. THE BILLING DEPT... what billing department. It was literally like a temp. answer the phone for a day person. I had to teach them & they could not answer basic questions (they should know) & they gave me an est. (good 4 90 days), the doctor told me the plan, they screwed up overbilled me 4 things i did not want. It's taken me awhile to be able to write this. THERE ARE A TRILLION DENTISTS here- incredibly competitive- & seeing that the dentist is still rated as the #2 fear a person has, man they need to do some serious damage control, right their wrongs, & I pray that NOBODY ever goes through this again. There are seriously30+ dentists in MP alone. I was on the defense when i got into the 2 offices i had to go to TO FIX the awful/painful mistake they made, and it was real empathy, real compassion, like exhale. DO YOUR RESEARCH, consider your source, and know that these 5 stars are 99.8% fully covered for their fraudulous charges by insurance. Wisdom would say, wake up people & for goodness sakes, TRAIN your staff properly. Not robotically repeating the clear MO, "oh don't worry we will work out a payment plan, I promise, it's going to be ok". Use caution!! I'm a Government DoD employee with excellent dental insurance yet I still received a bill from this dentistry for $215 ABOVE what my insurance company paid?!? This was JUST a cleaning?! Also, the dentist was tried to find anything to tell me I needed work done. Which I didn't! SmileWorks dentists didn't have any of the same concerns. So be very careful about getting stuck with frivolous billing and receiving dental work that you do not need! Wouldn't recommend this place at all! I need a crown fixed and called PFD for a possible appointment. I was astonished when the receptionists told me they could see me later that evening. Wow talk about making it convenient. I never had a dentist whose office did evening appointments. I went in and after some initial checks had my crown fixed in no time at all. My insurance covered some and my copay was very reasonable. What a deal! The staff was very nice and the Dentist was awesome! I was relieved to know I had found our new Dentist office! Looking forward to my next visit. read more

After searching 2 years for a good dentist & hygienist, I finally found one! I had gone through 4 other offices that were very aggressive telling me I needed work that wasn't necessary. The experience was amazing and everyone treated us fairly, but did not inform us at the beginning of our appointment they didn't accept medicaid even tho they took the card to scan. They took extra PA's which added to my billing. Was super expensive, ask about pricing before if you don't wanna spend 1k for a cleaning. read more

They have literally 6 staff members that all they do is collect payment when you walk in the door and they nickel and dime you on services that I have repeatable ask for the dental team not to perform. Pleasant Family Dentistry has put people first. They are working in conjunction with some other organizations to promote oral hygiene. They are calling it "Free Smiles". Each customer (up to the first 100) are allowed to choose from a free cleaning, free filling, or free extraction. The staff has been very courteous and attentive. The facilities are very clean and waiting room comfortable. They accept most insurances. If you are in need of a dentist, I would recommend calling to setup an appointment. This is the best dentist I've ever been to. Moving here from Pittsburgh, I needed to find a dentist in Mt. Pleasant and I figured I'd give this one a try based on good reviews I saw online. From the minute I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly desk attendant and my name on a board welcoming new patients. I thought that was a nice touch! She gave me a tour and a welcome goody bag (neither of which I've ever received from a dentist office before) and, as silly as it sounds, I really appreciated that. And I also love how aesthetically pleasing the office is. It doesn't feel like your typical, sterile dentist with ugly lighting and white walls. My hygienist was so friendly, the dentist was very friendly and complimentary and all of the technology used was more up-to-date than any office I've been to previously. They even have complimentary blankets if you're cold! Who does that?? Needless to say, I was VERY impressed by this office and really enjoyed my visit - something I've never said about a dentist appointment before! read more

Just took my 3 year old son, my 18 month old daughter and myself to Pleasant Family Dentistry. We walked in, and they had two helium balloons and two Bearinstein bear books about going to the dentist waiting for the kids. The hygienist was AMAZING with my three year old son to the point where he was comfortable in the room by himself and me in the next room over with my 18 month old. The hygienist tried all the different tools/tactics to get her to open her mouth and was able to polish a couple front teeth which I consider a win :) both kids left excited and smiling, and my son can't wait for his next trip! I also had my first appointment with them today and was thrilled that they didn't push anything on me. When I asked about wisdom teeth removal and my crooked lower teeth they said I could, totally up to me, but not necessary. And the water bottle gift was a nice touch. :) read more

This is the most thorough and comprehensive dentist I've ever been to. I pass by almost every day, so I see their business sign; then when I went to yelp, they were given consistent 5 star reviews. The entire staff that I had contact with were friendly and answered any questions I had. I have extreme "dentist office phobia" but they make me as comfortable and at ease as possible, and they let me wear the X-ray cape the entire time because I find it oddly comforting. Very knowledgeable practitioners, and everyone in the office is so incredibly friendly and welcoming. I love that they have everything in-house: oral surgery, dentistry, orthodontics, etc. Plus, their hours can accommodate people with odd work schedules such as mine. Overall the front desk staff and dental hygienists are courteous and friendly. However, I have not had an experience where I was billed correctly. Consistently, I have been overcharged and it seems that the current procedure is to charge as much as possible and hope that the patient doesn't look into it. Recently, I had my wisdom teeth removed and the procedure went smooth. After leaving the office I have been getting bills mailed to me after paying my portion. I then had to play phone tag between Pleasant Family Dentistry and my insurance carrier. When I finally got to the bottom of it, Pleasant Family overcharged the costs of the procedure. When I explained this to their billing, it was noted that they"hopefully" would have caught it before I paid for it. It seemed very unlikely to be caught though. To put into perspective my costs upfront were about $200, the overcharge would have been an additional $500. This was the largest cost, but this has happened on routine checkups and cleanings as well. If this occurred once, I understand that mistakes happen. The second time I started getting skeptical and assumed that I was just unlucky. By the third time it seems very obvious that this is a trend and its about time to find a new dentist. read more

I was very disappointed with services provided on a recent visit. I made an emergency appointment due to excruciating tooth pain, was praying I'd finally get some relief, after being examined, poked on and x-rayed, I was then told I couldn't be helped any further because I only had a 30 min appointment, needless to say, I left in more pain than when I arrived. I'm still at a lost as to why you would schedule a 30 min appointment for an emergency visit. I just wanted to be treated for the issues I was having. read more

I was not a patient here previous to this emergency and 3 other dentists made "consultation" appointments but couldn't get me into actually help.
