Advent Calendar: I have to confess that I've had an Advent calendar every Christmas for most of my…read morelife and intend to keep getting one for every Christmas season to come. An Advent calendar is essentially a countdown to Christmas beginning on December 1st and lasting until December 24th. There are 24 numbered "doors" or "windows" to open. Behind each one is a piece of chocolate (usually Christmas themed). Popping the chocolate into my mouth each year instantly brings me back to the best Christmases of my childhood. Typically, I opt for a more Christmas themed image, but being the Star Wars fan that I am, I was gifted with a Grogu stylized one from The Mandalorian. This particular calendar is distributed in the U.S. by Galerie Candy, and I believe the chocolate is made by Jean-Talon Chocolate in Canada. My only minor complaint is it seems like a wasted opportunity to not make the chocolates into various shapes from the Star Wars universe (ships, characters, weapons), they are instead the same shapes found in other Jean-Talon Chocolate Advent calendars. They are a tiny store, you can easily miss them, but they do set right off the road with good signage. The lot is small, but adequate. My visit was on a weekday in the Spring and they were not busy. I was greeted warmly and offered a sample of one of their well know bourbon candies with a single pecan on it. Of course I enjoyed and have actually had before. They make the chocolates for many of the distilleries in the area and have for decades. The business itself dates back to 1919. I did not do a tour, but it appears they offer. Ruth's offer a lot of variety and I do mean a lot! They also some of the branded boxes like Makers Mark. The service was top notch as everything was explained. I decided on a non bourbon chocolate so my wife could enjoy too. So I ordered a half pound of three varieties of chocolate (white, dark, milk) with almonds. The chocolate's in the case are put in their own box, as opposed to the gift boxes. I really enjoyed after returning from my trip, wife too! Easy 5 stars and will return at some point.

So basically, this part of Main Street is candy central. Maybe these guys decided to team up, and figured that a rising tide lifts all boats. The Candy Emporium seems to have more commercial and old-fashioned candies than the other place. They also seem to get nasty with the licorice here, and in particular, black licorice. OK! I won't let you know my opinion about black licorice, those murdered-out pieces of vile rubber, because I don't want to yuck your yum. But if you are a black licorice fan, this is your place. They have bulk chocolates by the pound here (minimum 1/8 pound), plus lots of packaged candies -- everything from Starbursts to Laffy Taffy to Razzles and Necco Wafers. The price points range from 10 cents to much higher, so you can bring a kid here with some pocket change, and they'll be able to get a little treat.

We especially loved the heart shaped red hot candies. They give out samples to taste. The red hots are perfect! Not burn your mouth hot! I bought several bags to take home to friends in California. We enjoyed exploring the museum room with all of the candy tins from years past. They have original candy making equipment and all of the history to offer a nostalgic experience. Be sure to try the marshmallow, chocolate carmel and pecan treat. The Modjeskas definitely came home with us to share with family and friends. I love these little town treasures!

Schimpff's Confectionery is a very good, old-timey candy store. However, while I can't say their ranking as #1 best candy store in America in 2025 by USA Today is undeserved.
