I've always been avoiding Plum Valley because I thought it was too touristy and just too much for China Town. But last Sunday I had a huge craving for noodles and, to my surprise, it's actually quite hard to find good veggie noodles in Soho. So I did the 'no shit Sherlock' thing and headed over to China Town. I was with a fellow veggie and he suggested hitting up Plum Valley. All in all, the food was good and they had more veggie options than most places. They even did a really decent ficken (fake chicken) which had that crispy/chewy texture that I miss. Service was nice, we had a lovely seat by the window and food was good - hence 4 stars. It might not be very authentic, and if that's what you're after, it's worth going elsewhere, but Plum Valley is a pretty safe choice. read more

The restaurant claims fine dining but neither the service level or food were really what I'd consider exceptional. A luke warm experience -- I would not go back. This place serves very western-oriented Multi-regional Chinese food. We had spicy shrimp in green curry sauce. Excellent, the plum valley house chicken, also excellent. Dim sum selection, very good. Modern and innovative Dim Sum in the heart of London, UK!! We ordered lots of freshly made dim sums and they were turely the best I have ever had! Highly recommend the XO shrimp dumpling and the scallop dumpling. This place was decorated with modern interior and dimmed lighting. Plum Valley's dark interior is better suited for a romantic dinner than a lunch out or a place to go with children. But there are plenty of other places around here that fill that quotient so it's a nice addition to the usual chinatown fare. I only ordered the dim sum, so can only speak to it, the wasabi prawn dumplings were good kind of fooled myself into thinking I was eating sushi with that wasabi. The scallop cheung fun was probably my fav dish (and their scallop dumplings) and delicious. Bread cheung fun and prawn cheung fun were both yummy but are dishes to share, don't know why cheung fun is both so tasty and so heavy that it makes it almost impossible to finish one yourself! So basically, if you are looking for an evening spot that's a bit more trendy/posh than you can find usually on Gerrard St., I'd recommend it. Think you might be giving up a bit on food quality for ambience, but don't get me wrong the dim sum was still yummy, just short of down right delicious though. I've had more delicious dim sum in china town at a place whose decor could be said to be non-existent to run-down so really I think sometimes you are the luckiest to find a place with both great foot and great ambience and sometimes you have to go on your mode and pick one or the other! We usually visit for KTV with food inclusive. Lobster noodles are nice, we also like many other Chinese drinks here. Other dishes are not bad, a lovely place to party and reunion, Karaoke is sooo important to Chinese social life and that's why we love it. This place is simply outstanding. There is a trend for "haute cuisine" dim sum which started in Hong Kong years ago and this place exemplifies how beautiful a simple modern steamed dumpling can taste and look. Service was simply great with some of the nicest Chinese ladies I've come across so far in London, and the ambience was pretty contemporary Asian bistro. Watch out for some of the seats as the walkway to the tables slope upwards and one can get caught out a little. Overall, if one loves dim sum and not crazy enough to spend a fortune at Hakkasan, then this is about as good a dim sum restaurant as you will find in London's Chinatown. Yum!! Had dinner there last night using toptable's 50% off if you have a starter and main. Definitely worth it, as the main I chose (their signature cod in honey and champagne marinade) cost a whopping £30 on its own!! Lovely service, delicious food, well presented. I really liked this place. Only downside is that I can't seem to track down a menu online. I've been here twice and both times we were seated on the second floor. The setting is a bit dark and pretty romantic, if that's what you like. The service was good, aside from some wait time when we wanted to order fresh drinks. A great assortment of food (though with so many options available that it can be overwhelming to actually settle on a dish). Is it a bit pricey? Yes. But it made my vegetarian belly happy (and my partner's meat eating belly as well). read more

Went to satisfy a craving for dim sum. While the food was fresh and generally good it's a little overpriced - no doubt to match the trendy & modern decor. Service was friendly and prompt so no complaints there. I'll probably go back at some point but not before trying some of the other restaurants in the area first. read more

For dim sum, I think this place deserves a 3.5 (only because we think Royal China and Royal China Club are 4+, and it would be unfair to place Plum Valley at the same level). For main menu lunch/dinner, then this place deserves 3 stars. The decor is an oasis of calm and relaxation in the midst of bustling Gerrard Street in Chinatown. However, the toilets are cramped -- must one weigh no more than a supermodel to comfortably fit? The service is mixed, and can vary from bordeline rude to reasonably friendly. Steer clear of the goose foie gras dumplings (sounds good? doesn't deliver) and the lychee martinis. Make that the cocktails generally, as the cacophany of tastes can only result in acid reflux. The dim sum is good and worth a visit, but this place is certainly not the best or most authentic available. What is does offer is a clean and calm Chinese restaurant in an otherwise hectic and often less-than-sanitary neighbourhood. read more

As said in one of the previous reviews the place is "dark and intimate" and this really adds to it's charm. Staff were very welcoming, friendly and the service was good. We ordered the mixed platter for two which was made up of satay chicken, dim sum, prawn toast (with a huge prawn on top!) spring rolls and calamari. Followed by crispy duck, chilli beef and mango, kung po chicken and rice. Food really was good and as we had ordered far too much (the starter was bigger than we expected) we ended up getting it packed for lunch! read more

Went here because dumpling legends was closed, the service was slow and staff were distant at best, rude at worst. Four of us ordered lunch there, but it was 45 minutes before the first dish arrived, then 15 minutes before the next. We ended up eating separately so our food didn't go cold. plum valley is definitely the cleanest looking place in chinatown, which was what lured me in. the food wasn't bad, but wasn't special and the staff was really crap. they hovered over us the whole meal, grabbing plates as soon as we finished and kept trying to rush us out, which i really hate. my wonton soup had 4 wontons, but very little broth, which was sad. i didn't love the pork buns, but everybody else did so maybe that was just me. out of the 8 dishes we ordered, only about 3 stood out as really good. the rest were okay, but nothing worth coming back for. then again, just because the inside of plum valley is so nice and the rest of chinatown is not, i probably will come back eventually.. * my group of four ate loads and only had to pay £10 each.. pretty good! read more

One of the best Chinese places in China Town. Interior is a bit dark and strange-overly swanky for china town. But the food is of very high quality, great. I wish I could give a 3.5 stars, but as I'm not completely sold as a fan I'll go for a 3-star rating. We had reserved a table for a group of twelve at this restaurant and a £100 deposit was required. When we arrived, the table that was prepared for us was a round table in a corner booth on the first floor, which was entirely too cramped to be reasonable. Our elbows gnashed throughout the meal, which was otherwise enjoyable. I was initially a little taken aback by the prices - £9.80 for a plate of morning glory is entirely too steep for my liking. I would have liked there to be more differential prices between vegetables and meat dishes, so on this front I find that there is a poor value proposition. The vegetarians in our party who ordered the tofu were served with a hefty portion of salty and one-note marmite-like dark firm smoky tofu, which if I hazard a guess can be purchased at any one of the local Chinese supermarkets and sliced up and heated through. The white rice we ordered was of poor quality and poorly cooked - chipped, dry in some parts and gummy in others. Very disappointing for this rice lover. However, most of the (meat) dishes were outstanding in value and quality. I particularly loved the braised pork belly, which came with two fried buns and two steamed buns for that extra satisfaction. The classical cooking here displayed in the rich-but-not-greasy soft folds of porky fat encased in the soft steamed bun was exemplary. The Plum Valley roast chicken was excellent and I highly recommend it with some rice on the side - the skin is crisp and the fat rendered. The beef hor fun was delicious and charred with the beef marinated in something that left it flavourful and tender despite being cut remarkably thin. Perhaps a tad greasy but fat is flavour after all. Salt and pepper squid in a tempura-batter lost its crispness after sitting a little, but the squid portions were generous albeit perhaps seasoned with something akin to MSG (that taste is too familiar...). I was not a fan of the tea-smoked ribs, or the wasabi prawns as they were a tad too sweet for me, but the ribs were tender and the prawns large and juicy, so your opinion may vary. I'm probably being a little harsh on a very respectable meal with some genuine highlights, but Plum Valley does need to sort out its service, which is currently not remotely close to the high-end restaurants of Hong Kong and Asia. Tables should be already set with rice bowls, water should be offered upon seating, and the peanut and pickle dishes should be refilled. The lack of consideration for seating yet the demand for a £100 deposit seems pretty ill-conceived on their part. This is a mixed review, but I will return and hope that given different circumstances I will get some good rice and service. read more

Something about this place just seems off. It is white tablecloth dining in Chinatown and it is only slightly more expensive than other Chinese. It just feels like it is trying too hard to be something other than a dressed up Chinatown restaurant. The service is better than other Chinese restaurants but far from say Hakkassan. The decor is dark but seems dated for some reason. That said it is really the only dining option of its kind in Chinatown. A good date place. I've not a massive fan of Chinese food, and whenever I do have one I'll normally have crispy duck and chicken with black bean. my boyfriend has wanted to do Chinese in Chinatown ever since I met him so we finally decided to do it last Friday evening. we first ventured into a restaurant called Tao Tao Ju but when we sat down and looked at the menu our appetites diminished quite quickly (fish guts and duck tongue are not my favourite dishes). Plum Valley looked like the safer option with both crispy duck and chicken in black bean on the menu. The duck was as good as you'd get in any Chinese restaurant. The chicken however was quite dry, I think they had reheated it (it definitely wasn't fresh). The starter of mixed appetizers was as you'd expect - breaded, breaded and breaded. I tried booking at least 5 times via top table but I never managed to get in for the 50% off. Finally I succeeded booking via time out. Even though the food was nice, a piece of advise: never ever go there without 50% off it is massively overpriced. I mean 9.50 for pak choi?? you got to be kidding! We started with Grilled Vegetarian Shanghai Dumplings (5.50) ok, but not terribly exciting and Mango Duck Breast Salad (9.50) which was served with lemon sauce and pomegranate seeds. The mango was ripe and lovely and the duck moist and tender. All worked together really well and it was quite enjoyable but 9.50?? For the mains we went for healthy options: the above mentioned most expensive Pak Choi of my life was nice but not 10-pounds-nice really. The Chicken in Claypot with Thai Basil and Shaoxing Wine (10.60) was a very generous portion indeed served piping hot. The sauce was nice and spicy and the chicken well cooked. I am using the word nice too much I know.. everything was nice but just not very special. So I would say, with 50% off it's a really good deal especially if you feel like Chinese but want to avoid major greasiness. without the half price, no way! I have been looking to find a go-to Dim Sum place for a while now, but while I have a place for soup dumplings (Leong's Legend) and just a quick dumpling (green place at the corner) I have struggled to find a place where I just can't decide what to order because everything sounds delicious. Now I have found it. My all time favorite BBQ pork buns were deliciously sweet and juicy, the Chilly Shrip dumpling were yummee, and the venison and fois gras deumplings were a good surprise. Only disappointment was the eal in rice roll. Could barley taste the eal...it totally dissapeared in the rice. What a shame read more

Had dinner here Thursday evening, July 23rd. Was our first time in London in over a decade, and had hoped to go to our favorite Chinese restaurant but discovered that it was long closed. So, we started to look for an alternate, and ended up here based on reviews, menu, and its appearance. Plum Valley certainly has a very attractive exterior and interior. Much more welcoming than many Chinese restaurants. But after that, most things left us wanting. Food was okay, but portions were small. Not what you typically run into at Chinese restaurants. We couldn't understand why they were looking at us oddly when we ordered a few items for the four of us. After the items arrived we realized why they looked at us oddly, as each was a very small portion, and not really set up for sharing as you would normally expect to find in a Chinese restaurant. We actually found the menu to be somewhat limited in choices. It would be very unlikely we would go back, and probably would try one of the other Chinese restaurants out in China Town or elsewhere in London. read more

There's only one word to describe this place : rubbish ! After a lovely evening watching a musical we want to polish of our evening at a fine dining place with a bit of privacy. So we came across Plum Valley. From the outside the place looked posh, menu certainly looked the part. They claim that thier chef is well known from guanzhou in China. I checked the reviews on my iphone just to be sure. However its was all too good to be true.... not only had the online reviews let me down but my own judgement failed ! I ordered a bottle of french white to get things going and three starters- The chilli tofu, dimsum platter, veg spring rolls,chicken satay. The waiter ordered us the wrong platter and then forgot the wine. The tofu wasnt deep fried as confirmed with the waiter, it was actually microwaved in a smelly sauce. On complaining the waiter described it lighty fried ! The Dim Sums and Spring Rolls were average and the chicken satay were rubbery and seemed to have been picked up from the buffet joint next door. The mains of chicken was exactly the same as the satay... unedible. The only decent dish was the thai prawns in basil and chilli ... not even a chineese dish ! The bill came upto 80 pounds for two and included the added a service charge. I couldnt believe that thier card machine then had the "add gratuity ". Did they really think I had the tax payers dough to blow away ??? Im a frequent traveller to Guangzhou in China and let me tell you this place would be shut down in a day..... with their untrained waiters and sloppy cooking. Lessons of the day like Brick Lane does'nt have authentic indian... China town isnt the place for authentic chineese food and plum valley is the probably the worst out there. On a scale of 1 to 10 .... rating this 1 seems rather generous ! We waited 15 minutes for a table. Not bad considering it was a busy Saturday night. However, everything went downhill after that. It took 10-15!minutes to be recognized by the rude waitress. During the middle of ordering, she said "excuse me" and walked away. When she finally returned and finished our order, we hoped things would improve. Half of our appetizers arrived and when we finished with them, we asked about the dumplings and they said they would check on them. Five minutes later they arrived barely warm. 30 minutes after our appetizers were done, we had to ask about our entrees. Two of the four arrived, one was cold. 15 minutes later the third entree arrived without the rice. 10 minutes later the assistant manager shows up with a hot second entree and the rice. At this point, what we had was pretty much finished. 45 minutes after the first entree arrived, we finally got the last entree. During all of this, multiple tables turned over parties and the second parties got their food the same time we did. Even a party of 14 came in after us and left 30 minutes before us. Went here a week ago (05/17/2017) and was extremely unimpressed. The best thing about this restaurant is the decor. I ordered some chicken in a claypot with wine sauce (sorry can't remember the exact name), which was served overcooked and rubbery. Another guest in my party ordered the Singapore noodles which barely had any flavor (come on its curry!), and the third guest ordered vegetables and rice with prawn which was unremarkable but otherwise decently prepared. We are from the U.S, and as the portion sizes in U.K are much larger we asked for a doggy bag. The waitress obliged and then took the food in the back to empty it into the containers. Everything was fine until that point, then a male manager-type came over and had the nerve to stick his finger in the bag and ask if we "brought that with us". He argued with the receptionist in cantonese or some other language (forgive my naivety) in front of our table over the matter and was insistent that we had committed some sort of food crime faux pas. We offered to just dump the food and pay the tab but he appeared embarrassed with himself and said "No, its ok" while looking straight down at the table. In the end we just dumped the doggy bag anyways because the food wasn't worth keeping and couldn't redeem the restaurant for the crappy service we received. read more
