The main problem and downside is that they are very expensive and overcharge. Despite the Yelp page saying that the company provides a "free estimate", I was quoted $49 for the technician to travel. In addition, if I had not chosen to go ahead with the repair, the company would have charged me an additional $150 diagnostic fee. Essentially, despite the yelp profile stating a "free estimate", it will cost you closer to $200 to get a quote. I see this as false advertisement. In addition, when the technician concluded that the problem was the capacitor, I received a final quote of $600. When I googled the price of the same capacitor online, the price range was in between 75$ - 150$. Essentially, they are charging a premium of at least $450 per replacement for a single part (capacitor). Despite their professionalism and quality work, I do not recommend this company for the reasons stated above. If price is not a concern for you, and you would rather pay twice the market value for a job then you should definitely choose them. EDIT: I actually googled the price of a capacitor and offered to buy my own. I was told that by the technician that if I purchased my own capacitor that the company would not install it. In conclusion, they did not address any of my concerns. Unfortunately, after reading the other bad reviews, there seems to be a consistent pattern of discrepancies between what they tell customers and what they instruct technicians to say on site. Making an honest living is so much more rewarding than making it dishonest living.

If you are a customer paying Fick's Mechanical directly and not going through a home warranty…read morecompany, maybe you will receive better service. Unfortunately, that was NOT my experience. Fick's Mechanical was assigned to me through American Home Shield to service my central air unit. My service request was opened in late May, and here we are at the end of August and my AC still has not been serviced/repaired. Almost an entire summer! Things started off pretty decent, but the red flags quickly started showing once my diagnostics was completed and it was time to order a coil for my furnace. Communication is terrible. They barely answer the phones if you reach out too much, and when you finally reach someone and are promised a return call, don't count on actually receiving one. There were also delays with getting the necessary paperwork and information submitted to my home warranty company, which only added more time to an already lengthy process. My biggest issue was a situation with the part delivery and appointment. I was told the part had been ordered and eventually received an appointment with a service window. I took off work to be home for this appointment. THREE HOURS into my scheduled 8a-12p window, I received a call saying they had the wrong part and couldn't do the service. How do you schedule a customer for a repair without confirming beforehand that you actually have the correct part? When I expressed how inconvenient this was after taking off work, I was basically told it was "out of their control when these things happen and the owner is not going to do or give you anything for this inconvenience" and that they would now order the correct part. There was no real accountability or concern for the fact that my time and a day without pay had been wasted. If everything regarding my unit, diagnosis, and required part had been properly documented from the beginning, I still don't understand how the wrong part was ordered and this wasn't discovered until the day of my appointment. Make it make sense. The lack of accountability with this company is baffling. Whenever there was a delay, error, or something fell short, it seemed as though the responsibility was constantly being shifted back to the home warranty company. I understand that American Home Shield has its own processes and procedures, but the warranty company does not run Fick's Mechanical's business, answer their phones, return their customers' calls, submit their paperwork, order their parts, or provide their customer service. At some point, a company has to take accountability for the part of the process that IS within its control instead of making every issue seem like it falls on the warranty company. Eventually after me reaching out to AHS and for them to reach out to Ficks Mechanical essentially an appointment was made yet again. After experiencing issue after issue, I decided to read their reviews and noticed that several other customers described similar experiences. At that point, I ultimately decided to end my service request with Fick's Mechanical. My reasoning was simple, if I was already this unhappy with the service, communication, delays, lack of accountability, and overall experience before they even completed the work, what confidence should I have that I wouldn't experience additional problems during or after the repair? I wasn't willing to take that chance with my home or my money. Fick's Mechanical had lost my trust and confidence. I refuse to pay my hard-earned money toward an out-of-pocket portion to a company when I am already uncomfortable with the level of service I've received. Customers deserve communication, transparency, accountability, follow-through, and respect for their time. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend Fick's Mechanical, especially if they are assigned to you through a home warranty company.

Saved by Ehrhardt Brothers Quality Plumbing! (West of Baltimore, a.k.a ColumbiaPlumber)…read more Sunday evening, our water felt less hot than usual. Monday, it was only as warm as we keep the house, and only as much water as there is in the pipes! Our gas water-heater failed! Bad timing, too. Last week was what Chicago calls Fools'-Spring ... around 70°. But this week was back to Second-Winter, 30° (Mar 2026). And the next warm days, which Chicago calls the "Spring-of-Deception", is still ten days away. There was water leaking from the heater. This is considered the calm before the 50-gallon tsunami. If this is home-remedy advice, First call a friend who has successfully navigated this problem. Next shut off the gas and then the pilot. Next shut off the water inlet. Your friend will have at least one plumber to recommend. (They will enjoy that...) If your garden hose isn't frozen to the spigot, drain the water tank. If frozen, spend a sleepless night with the 24/7 plumber's number on speed-dial. We chose #2.  We made it through the night. Two of our friend's recommendations were small-businesses, our preference, and we asked all three for quotes and availability. Ehrhardt was ready to offer a price based on our descriptions and photos, of course with caveats for anything unexpected. I considered their bid to be a pretty-penny, but I'll say it was less than our friend's expectation, and more than our friend in Cleveland expected. A fair price. They came the next morning, and it might have been sooner if we had called right away. We cleared a path for them through the house, and they had the water heater replaced in 90min. Impressive. We went out for St. Pat's. But what we should have done was what they told us: check the pilot light for about 30min, and test the hot water after 60 to 90min. We came home to cold water. I'll admit some grumpiness. We called in the morning, and they came back in a jiffy (our apologies to everyone else who had appointments that day). In 30min, they figured it out: a faulty pilot in the new, just-unboxed water heater. They had a replacement part over-nighted. The next morning, in 30min, done. This time we did as told: checked the pilot after 20min (and nervously, an extra time again after that). Still lit! The second time we checked, the hot water outlet was noticeable warm. By 60min, hot water from the faucets! By 90min, much to relief of nearly everyone i know, a piping hot shower. AAAAAHHH :-) Ok, so how does three visits equal 5-stars! The hardest question answered first: Because the problem was the manufacturer's fault, and Ehrhardt handled it flawlessly: Excellent communication by Ehrhardt, priority attention to our problem, no excuses, just fast resolution. Great service staff, from the office to my house. Fair price. I admit that I'm writing this in the after-glow of that hot shower. This could be the start of a beautiful situationship.

The last thing that I wanted was to go public with my concerns. Yesterday, the plumbers at WRF & Son came to my house to replace three hose bibs. They did a nice job at replacing the bibs. However, when they turned the valve back on inside the house, they did not do it slowly. They opened the valve too quickly, and hence, shattered a PCV valve in the basement. I called to let WRF & Son know that in the future, the young plumbers would be wise to take it slow opening up the valve. It caused a big catastrophic problem in my home. Mallick Plumbing came to the rescue this morning and did a super job. It was Mallick Plumbing that informed me that the valve was opened too quickly. Again, I only wished to convey an important message to WRF & Son for future situations w/ other customers, but I say to you, beware, they are not interested in hearing/learning from their mistakes.
