I'm very pleased with the service that Saul provided and would definitely use Tim Whistler Plumbing & Gas Fitting in the future. There was an initial mixup about the appointment time, but that was soon sorted, and Saul contacted me prior to his arrival and arrived on time. Quickly getting to work, he identified the problem with our gas insert. He was able to fix the immediate problem to return it to working order and then explained what was happening and why. They are professional, punctual, knowledgeable and do good quality work. I very much respect the technician, but the problem appears to lie with the company's practices and fees. The main problem and downside is that they are very expensive and overcharge. Despite the Yelp page saying that the company provides a "free estimate", I was quoted $49 for the technician to travel. In addition, if I had not chosen to go ahead with the repair, the company would have charged me an additional $150 diagnostic fee. Essentially, despite the yelp profile stating a "free estimate", it will cost you closer to $200 to get a quote. I see this as false advertisement. In addition, when the technician concluded that the problem was the capacitor, I received a final quote of $600. When I googled the price of the same capacitor online, the price range was in between 75$ - 150$. Essentially, they are charging a premium of at least $450 per replacement for a single part (capacitor). Despite their professionalism and quality work, I do not recommend this company for the reasons stated above. If price is not a concern for you, and you would rather pay twice the market value for a job then you should definitely choose them. EDIT: I actually googled the price of a capacitor and offered to buy my own. I was told that by the technician that if I purchased my own capacitor that the company would not install it. In conclusion, they did not address any of my concerns. Unfortunately, after reading the other bad reviews, there seems to be a consistent pattern of discrepancies between what they tell customers and what they instruct technicians to say on site. Do not go here, they're scammers and extremely unprofessional. Similar to Julie A, whose review you should also go look at, I was bait and switched by this company. They said there was a $49 assessment fee to come out and look at my HVAC. (See attached screenshot of Yelp chat). When they got there, they assured me they could take care of the problem and would provide a quote. The visit ended with them charging me $219 somehow. I disputed the additional $170 with my credit card company because this is FRAUD. Even by their own invoice, they did nothing to earn anything past the $49 assessment fee and even that they don't deserve. They NEVER provided me with a written quote. Because I live in a condo building, they had someone call me back and say I would need to pay $10-15k to rent a crane so they could replace my HVAC system and that didn't include any materials, labor etc. Just the crane. They also said they would have to cut through my upstairs neighbor's unit for the repair and that I would be responsible for all of the costs of demolition and restoration. At the time, I was in a different state taking care of an extremely sick family member and when I asked clarifying questions about how they were going to do the HVAC replacement they just kept throwing out bigger and bigger numbers until I was deeply distressed. $10-15k for a crane, another $7k to run some tests on the lines that run to and from the HVAC system, an overall ludicrous quote of $40k--to replace an HVAC system!! They could've just said they don't want the job. They could've even refrained from following up. Instead they needlessly put me in distress and unjustly tried to take $219 from me while providing NOTHING in exchange. I ended up going with a different company who didn't try to take advantage of a young homeowner and didn't need to get a crane. Please don't go with this lazy, crooked company. AVOID THIS BUSINESS - especially if you are a woman or POC. In my experience, they are both offensive and costly, and in the end they did not even show up to do the job they promised to do. It's a bit of a long story ... First Tim Whistler sent Jose, who actually was great, did one job on the spot, and gave me a reasonable quote for a second job of replacing my shower fixtures. He understood and was sensitive to the fact that I had just lost both my father and my job and was struggling to get the house ready to rent (leaving me without a home). If only Jose could have carried out the job as we agreed, everything would have been fine. Instead, TW's assistant manager Chris and his phone guy Tyler took over - and wow. These people should not be interfacing with the public. When I first called to discuss the job Jose had quoted, I was told a different plumber (assistant manager Chris) would be coming instead. Chris came out to give me his estimate, and before even arriving, he called to berate me (literally) for not having my own parking space. (What?) There was (and always is) is ample street parking immediately in front of my house, which sits on a green NW residential street in Washington, D.C. I explained that the issue of parking had never come up, but that if it was truly a problem I was happy to stand outside and guard his van if need be. He said his tools were stolen a few weeks earlier and he actually accused me of wanting to put his tools in jeopardy. I said OK forget it, if you can't accept the parking immediately in front of my home, I'll find another plumber. Then Chris showed up at my door, having of course parked his van directly in front of my house. But this was still not good enough. He whined about his lost tools (how is this my fault? and why didn't he have them insured?) He gave me a quote for more than 3x what Jose quoted. I said I would think about it, but I was alarmed by all of it. The price hike was especially upsetting, as I had made clear that I lost my job and was replacing the shower because I was losing my home. I decided, obviously, to go with Jose's first estimate, and went ahead and bought the fixtures for Jose to install. When I called to accept Jose's first estimate and to schedule his visit - I was given the run around and insulted by a guy called Tyler. Tyler was at first cheerful and ready to help. Then he put me on pause, and came back saying suddenly that they can't do my job because I live in a big apartment building and they can't handle big buildings. I noted that I lived in a single-family townhouse. Oops, he said. OK, let me talk to Chris again. He then came back and said they can't do the job because I don't have bespoke parking - though Chris and I had discussed the issue earlier and reached agreement. When I explained this to Tyler, he flat out said "so you want him to get his tools stolen again?" I was speechless. Tim Whistler had been recommended to me by close friends in Tacoma Park, and when I relayed this story to them - they were disgusted. If you can get Jose to do your plumbing work, great. But avoid Chris and Tyler at all costs. With me they were disingenuous and rude. And they have cost me WEEKS of delay with no shower or bath, along with hundreds of dollars in spending on equipment they ultimately failed to install. This sort of behavior in general leads me to question the company's values. Update and response to the owners reply: Alex A (owner) has since replied to this review (see below) - not to offer me help I should have received, or to take responsibility for the terrible treatment I was shown, or for screwing me over for a job they offered to do. Nope. Instead, he absconds from any sort of responsibility by saying, bizarrely, that it's not his fault that I don't have parking. He does not address that Chris and I resolved this issue, only for Chris to renege on the resolution. It is totally untrue that the company said anything to me about parking in the 3 conversations I had with them before Chris showed up and berated me. He notes some sort of form that made it clear? Except I never filled out a form - I always called the office directly as I was excited to get the job done. He should know this, as he notes they record their calls. And I remind him - TW gave me two estimates! Why do that only to refuse service? We needed some gas lines redirected, and Whistler was available quickly and offered a free quote. The employees were friendly and professional and pointed out some issues and made relevant suggestions. The work was agreed upon after we received the quote, and the service team were prompt and did an excellent job. These folks seem like honest businesspeople who don't try to upsell you. For disclosure, I also checked with Roto Rooter and they suggested a quote of $6,000 to redo everything, which was completely gratuitous. When the technicians arrived, they inspected my unit and determined that the fan battery needed replacing. I told them I needed time to think about it. At that point, the technician said the office never promised a free estimate and that I owed $135. This was very disappointing. I feel misled and bait-and-switched--especially after being explicitly told on the phone that there would be no charge for the estimate. I contacted this company due to my AC breaking down. They cancelled and rescheduled an appointment of which they put me out until Friday and said someone would arrive at 7 AM. At 8 AM. I called them and the dispatcher Heather refused to talk to me and made the other person tell me that their truck broke down and that they could possibly get me on the schedule today. Don't use these people if you actually want service fulfilled and especially if your furnace or AC has broken down. Response to Alex: your dispatcher Heather would not take my phone call and handed it over to Tyler who told me that your truck broke down. Tyler also said he may be able to get me on today's schedule. How much do you think that was going to happen? I had been rescheduled initially due to double booking the first go round and then suddenly your truck breaks down. This whole process started on Tuesday when my condenser was not working. With the upcoming weekend having extreme heat, I needed it to work. And this must be part of your problem because if you don't think making an appointment and keeping an appointment is part of your service then that is a huge issue. read more

I'll start by saying that Tim Whistler didn't actually do our repair job; this review is for honest advice they gave us when the job was potentially too big for them. We had a water main break near the street a couple weeks back, and the county said it was on our property not the public line. So we called Tim Whistler since we saw a picture of a dug-up driveway, which is what we expected out of this repair, and they came out within a few hours. When the plumber arrived (who my husband spoke with, I didn't catch his name), he spent some time evaluating the situation and said that we should call a specialty plumber (Mid-atlantic trenchless) because with the length of our driveway, it was possible if the leak was close to the house that they wouldn't be able to tunnel far enough with their setup but that the other company would be able to. As it turns out, the leak was actually within a few feet of the street - uncovered by the initial 5x5 hole that Mid-atlantic trenchless dug out, so Tim Whistler COULD have done it - but they couldn't have known that up front and they saved us a lot of potential expense by calling it out up front. They didn't charge us the service fee for the visit, even though they could have. Which, given the ultimate expense of the repair, was greatly appreciated. I also appreciate that they didn't take on the job and then risk partway though saying "this is too big, call the other folks." To me this shows integrity, so next time we need any (more basic) plumbing work, we'll call Tim Whistler. read more

I've used Tim Whistler since I arrived in the area in DC (2019), and I've always had extremely positive experiences (mostly for plumbing). But recently, our thermostat started beeping and I called Tim Whistler to ask them to take a look at our HVAC system. The person who arrived arrived hours late, and wasn't even an HVAC specialist--he was a plumber, and he wondered out loud why he was sent to my house. He did the best he could, but the problem was not solved. So now my thermostat is beeping almost constantly. I call back again to try to get the problem resolved, and ask why a plumber was sent out in the first place. But they're HVAC specialists are booked, and the secretary makes up something about Rheem making principally water heaters, and so when I said "Rheem," they just imagined i meant water heater (rather than call and double check). But as it turns out, the picture on their own website for "HVAC" service features a *Rheem* unit. So now, two days before Thanksgiving, I'm left with a thermostat that beeps morning, noon, and night, while my wife and kids try to sleep. We turn it off as late as we can and hope it doesn't get too cold in the night. All the while, I'm being given the runaround with nonsense excuses. Simply unacceptable. I ordered a new washing machine and when, the guys delivered the machine, they wouldn't hook it up...I was not happy. They said the washer connection needed to be replaced. So, I called Tim Whistler Plumbing. My favorite plumber, Frank, came out and made easy work of installing the new connectors. He always does an excellent job. There were a few snafus; I had to send my pictures 4 times and the date and time were mixed up. So, I would give the actual plumbing work a 5 and probably, four for the office. As always, everyone was as nice as can be. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for, and their work is top notch. This company didn't notify that there will be a $135 fee just to have someone come out to evaluate the drain issue. The technician came out performed his evaluation and surprised us with a $135 with no warning that there will be a fee. Called the company and they lied and stated that documentation was shown to my mom and sister that there will be a $135 fee just to have someone come out and take a look at the drain pipe. One said he'd have to pre-order a part and it would be a week until he could get out there. Another one said that he could do it, but it would involve ripping out the wall tile. I got a few estimates for a very straight forward repair, and Whistler's was more than $500 above the others. lf the price was $200 hundred more, I would've done it, but I felt like it was a big rip-off of an elderly person to ask for so much money. When I asked why it was so much higher than other companies, they replied that that's their prices. I understand it's a free market and you can charge whatever you like, but there's a limit. I requested my gas line to my stove be capped so I could replace it with an electric stove. Chris Haas and Remington Haas were my technicians and did a fantastic job. Everything was quick and professional. They went the extra mile by not just capping the line, but making sure the new stove would fit and that the gas line would not interfere with installation. They even walked me through where I should direct the electrician to put the plug and the electrical requirements. And they were nice! Company provides good value. How to differentiate a good from a bad contractor. Responsibility and honesty. We had a clog in our kitchen sink. I read some reviews online and called Tim Whistler for help. It costs $135 for technician Mike to come to inspect. He recommended some bio clean enzyme drain to try. It lasted 2 weeks then clogged again. He came back to replace approx. 40' of pvc piping. It costs a total of $1,700. Four days later, we noticed a small leak from the bottom of the disposer. Mike came back to confirm the leak but blamed it on the failure of the disposer. The disposer was installed when we renovated our bathroom located next to the kitchen in April 2023. The disposer performed fine and there was no leak until Tim Whistler came to replace the drain pipe. During the replacement, Mike rotated the disposer to line up to the new piping. It was obvious that Mike caused the disposer to leak. Mike refused to replace the 2 year old disposer. As a compromise, I offered to buy a new disposer for Mike to install. Tim Whistle's office management refused to assume any responsibility. Today 2/7/2025 I hired an appliance repair tech to help. It did not take long for him to identify the leak; the disposer's collar was lose that caused the leak. Again the disposer worked perfectly in the last two years. Who turned the disposer to line up with the new piping? who turned the collar of the disposer? Totally irresponsible Tim Whistler contractor. I will not use Tim Whistler any longer and will not recommend his service to anyone as he is an irresponsible and dishonest contractor.". read more

I contacted Tim Whistler plumbing to snake my kitchen drain, the replies were responsive and polite, which was good. However, the plumber came on Jan 25 and snaked the kitchen, I paid $400. On Feb 10, only two weeks later, the drain was clogged again, I contacted the company again and they initially wanted to charge me another $400, then the representative talked to her manager and said they would charge me $200. I don't think that is fair because it had only been two weeks. If you are reading this, you may decide if you think a $400 plumbing job lasting two weeks is satisfactory. In the last, in the same house, other plumbers have cleared the same drain and it lasted at least one year. Overall, the job was not satisfactory, the communication was fine. read more

Yes, we did ask about the tech being able to access our basement and could they do so with some shoveling of snow. When told no,we hired someone to do just that with a path for complete access, as well a complete clearing of our back porch and steps. When I called to inform them of this, they then told me that they would not install the water heater that day It only be for an estimate. We were very unhappy that we would be without hot water for many more days. We were also told that someone would come by to give us an estimate, but at 3:30 and they still hadn't shown up we felt 1.It was clear that our business was unimportant and 2 .We needed to take our business elsewhere. The technician arrived within the appt window and completed the work professionally. He had difficulty taking out one of the parts because it was stuck and it probably took about an hour just for that. I was charged an extra fee because of how difficult it was to extract that part. My husband and I needed a faucet installation for a new master bathroom vanity and countertop. We reached out for a quote and received a speedy response, which we were super happy about. We sent over pictures and got a reasonable quote that included any sawing of the shelving for the plumbing if needed. The day of install, we received a text with the name of the plumber as well as a picture and ETA. When the plumber arrived he already seemed annoyed as he was having difficulties finding our place. He entered without shoe covers and headed over to the bathroom and immediately came back to us and stated " I don't do any cutting...have at it". which we were surprised since the quote included this. He then mentioned that the faucet we purchased was too short and could not be installed. Since that was the case, he proceeded to charge us with a "Dispatch Fee" of over $100.00.... fortunately the only redeeming factor was that the owner reached out to us immediately after emailing and gave us a full refund while being apologetic which we truly appreciated. read more

We had a number of punch list items and concerns after just buying our house and the staff at Tim Whistler that came out, first for diagnosis/evaluation, and second to resolve the problems, were awesome. After dealing with a shady plumbing company, they rescoped my sewer line and after pointing out the flawed methodology (putting it kindly) of the other scope job, literally saved me digging up my entire basement! I am so grateful for their professionalism in following up after that other company. They also fixed the gas line to our cooktop, installed two new sinks (after a shoddy remodeler did a poor install), and installed a hose bib so we could have a spigot in the back of our house. This company and its staff are super accommodating, professional, and most importantly, do great work. Our disposal started leaking in the evening. Chris, from Tim Whistler, was here by 10 am the next day. We sent a photo and he diagnosed then corrected the problem by 10:45 with a replacement they had on hand. Chris took time to discuss other plumbing issues and gave us some great advice. Overall, a great experience at a clear and fair price. We have owned our house, bought new, for seven years. We love it, except the plumbing. I had replaced my tile and carpet for LVF. Well my bathroom tile was from '74 and when it was removed, my flange for toilet was way to high to put my toilet back. Vanities didn't fit either. When we were looking for a company that serviced gas fireplaces, I read through a lot of reviews and noticed reviews for Tim Whistler mentioned Remi for his particular expertise. We made the appointment with Tim Whistler and Remi was assigned to do our service. He lived up to his reputation. We had neglected service on our fireplace for many years and Remi made it look like new again. After his work, it was spotless. He even managed to revive the remote control which seemed beyond repair. I also appreciated how much I learned about our fireplace by chatting with Remi, including what to look out for in the future for potential repairs. Great experience. read more

I think this is a good, trustworthy, quality company. However, their pricing seemed extreme. I gently reached out to their owner (upon receiving an onsite quote) and I did not get a response. The hourly rate worked out to between $400-$650/hour (labor only). I felt like something was amiss and reached out for clarification...maybe I was missing something? If money is not an issue for you then I think they do good work. But the estimates for what was required seemed pretty far out of line to me. Quote was $975 initial for replacement kit in toilet tank plus replacing two cartridges in Moen faucets. They offered to discount it to $775. Cost of these parts is minimal. read more

I recently used Tim Whistler Plumbing when I discovered a gas leak in my utility room. They had a technician over within a few hours (I contacted 4 businesses and no one could beat that timing) and the technician, Remington, was very polite and professional. I rarely call a plumber so I can't say if the service was pricey or not but the company did let you know at their website that the service had a set rate for just coming out for gas leaks.
