Just to put it in context to you... my ancestors must have been from the tribe that lived closer to the ocean rather than near a farm lol! Fresh seafood for me is something I really enjoy! So driving by this location I really said to myself I needed to ask if they could ice pack some treats to take back. They had a sign on the window for fresh crab as it was in season. So I decided just to get two crab legs (it's lots of work) as a nice appetizer and some fresh Matane shrimp. The shrimp was $12.49 a pound but. I asked if fresh and the store owner said "oui Monsieur". So I got a small amount of both and was able to eat the crab when. I returned and the shrimp for the next two days with no issue. Both were very fresh and super tasty! Definitely I'd return when in RDL. If you want fresh Seafood in the Rivière Du Loup area it's a great option. They gave me a small bag of ice that worked well in my cooler to keep it fresh. Good stuff!

He said just get one. With a beer, blueberry pie du lac St Jean, you can't go wrong! "It's a Boucherie next to a dollar store". "Just go" he said! Also mentioned was when it's the December holiday and Christmas time they need to prepare all their tourtière du Saguenay three months in advance as demand is so high. So my intrigue and curiosity was on super high alert!!! I was travelling with a cooler as I'm always looking for new food adventures. For sure I needed to stop by! We entered the store and the people there gave the look of you definitely are not from here! I explained what we were in search of and they showed us lots of local treats. Really they felt honoured we were told of their shop! One guy even spoke English to me (a rarity in the region). Fresh home made jams........Wow the strawberry when I brought home I wish I bought 4 more of! After perusing around I ended up buying three toutieres and some turkey jerky. This is the kind of place where I could seriously do some decent damage. The toutieres were in many different sizes and I bought some that were $12.49. Sure you may think expensive but these weighed like a brick. We froze them when we arrived home and I ate one tonight and it was fantastic. Big cubes of potato plus pork morsels, beef cubes and ground beef. It was a tad salty but overall a delicious meal. Easily enough for three hungry people or four moderate eaters. I'd consider it more of a cold weather comfort food but today it was delish! The turkey jerky was amazing. Not too salty and smoked turkey chunks very flavourful and meaty. Many other products were available. A full butcher shop plus seafood, jams jellies and other prepared delights like toutiere of salmon and chicken. If you are in the region and like food you must come here! If you don't you are missing out. It's an experience of a lifetime!

They have a wonderful selection of smoked, marinated (in jar), frozen and of course fresh seafood! You can buy smoked herring, fillets of perch or mackerel, shrimps, trout, herring roe, eel, sturgeon, salmon... Or marinated products such as turbot, whelks, mussels... Other products available include dried cod, fresh fish, shellfish and seafood, home made products, salted herbs and capers. Seriously a seafood lover's dream! On my visit I ended up purchasing a nice huge piece of fresh Atlantic Halibut, a nice container of fresh Matane shrimp and a sugar pie. Prices are very reasonable for the area and seafood is freshly brought out of the water!

While some say it stinks (it really does in August) I enjoy the smells of the sea! Something about the cool breeze from the freezing cold water mixing on a warm summer night is so special and peaceful. Being a Coastal community where land meets the ocean you have a wonderful selection of fresh seafood present. There are many seafood shops but Poisonnerie Gagnon is one of the best. Very clean and offering an array of fresh, frozen seafood and prepared meals. It's a great place to come and enjoy the fruits of the sea if this is your game. I myself am a C-food fanatic. I'd much prefer fish, lobster or shrimp to a steak. Some people are people of the land I must come from descendants of the sea! On my visit I scoped the place out the night before for some fresh ocean critters to take home on my journey back to Montreal. My choice was some lobster and I love bringing back cooked bugs of the sea. It's so much easier than having to boil them at home. All you have to do is crack them apart and enjoy the succulent meat. They had cooked lobster for $12.95 a pound. So I picked up a jumbo 2.5 pound one and a 1.5 pounder. no difference in price for large or small. Delicious fresh and from the Gaspé coast. If ocean creatures are your choice this is a fine place to come visit. They even have take home coolers and offer ice. Conveniently located the E end of town right off the autoroute 132 on the way up to Matane.

The fromagerie was a disappointment…read more Number one, don't think you are walking into a traditional cheese shop in France or even Québec City. You are not. The place is big but the selections not so much. It is designed like what it is, a tourist venue. That said, this is a highly popular place for the locals to meet and greet and catch the contagion-of-excitement in a line up to buy the local specialty, Basque cheese curds (like strings) in a sealed bag of various sizes. For me, the cheese was inedible. It is loaded with salt and you cannot taste the fresh natural cheese because it is LOADED with way too much salt. Additionally, if you are an additive conscious individual and try to avoid unnecessary non-natural ingredients then you'll not be pleased to find "calcium chloride" added here also. We tried other cheeses offered for sale, bries. They were OK, not theirs, nothing special - but I noticed calcium chloride present also. Commercially available Brie in supermarches or supermarkets either in France or the U.S. do not have these needless additions normally. Again, for me, the salt issue in their specialty of the house cheese made it inedible for me and I feel this is more about the hype, the "sizzle", and not about quality substance. I cannot recommend personally at all.

First off it is an incredibly popular place, a meeting place, where locals get on a buying 'Conga Line' to snatch the next cheese offerings being replenished energetically by staff. The most talked about was the bags of Basque "cheese curds" a varietal specialty - so I bought plenty of plain and one bag mixed with garlic and green herbs (note this bag was the better choice actuall). The unfortunate thing here is they use the unnecessary additives of "Calcium Chloride" salts (clearly marked on their plastic label) and may also use "Titanium Dioxide" to give it the (super) white color (this latter point I cannot vouchsafe for as a French Label of ingredients and price per Kg was superimposed on the sealed bag but I thought I saw it). In any event given the unbelievable amount they sell additives of any type are simply not necessary at all! Now, about the salt! The cheese strings (curds) are absolutely LOADED with it! Like a hot dog drenched in saline solution! Hey, I like salt too, but there is SO much of it you aren't eating cheese but like a bag of potato chips you aren't eating potatoes either, but salted fried chips more often than not. Same applies here. The natural aspect of farmers cheese is lost in a salt drench. We also bought some brie there not theirs, it was OK no complaints. Except once again't "Calcium Chloride" was added. I mean you can buy "President's" Brie or "ile de France" and have none of this in a local supermarket- here or in France! This place is all "hat no cattle" for this transplanted Texan - and as a cheese lover absolutely not worth you time or your Canadian or American dollars.

The food was sublime and the friendliness of staff was true to form. The place is simply decorated and the kitchen actually resembles the kitchen of your next door neighbor. I marveled at how the Kraken Cru staff was able to balance a humble space with such amazing output. The man who was acting as bartender/server took the time the translate the entirety of their (small) menu for us so that we understood our options fully before starting to think about what we were going to eat. I will return to Kraken Cru every time I'm in Quebec.

I ordered multiple dishes and all of them are delicate finish with great base taste. It is complex and I enjoyed a chef's creativity. The dessert was Pana cotta with dates. Hmm yammy ending the night!! The staffs are very friendly and great place to hang out. They have very unique alcohol list such as Polish Chopin vodka and Japanese Kinuura whiskey. I highly recommend this place!
