As many of you know I am cultured. I'm seasoned. In age and in ethnicity. Lightly seasoned? Sure…read more But seasoning nonetheless? Depends who you ask. Oh Desdemona, how unlucky you were. Oh Yelp, how lucky I am. How lucky I always am. How lucky I was to stumble upon Hawaii Japanese Cuisine on the ever industrious Warburton Ave. Saturday Farmers Market. Meredith's Bakery. Chocolate Chip Cream Cheese Bread. If you know you know. Anyways. Out in Waikiki I learned to appreciate Poke. I once appreciated Pokemon. What's Politoed up to these days. Surprisingly, or unsurprisingly depending on your grasp of history, Poke is actually a Hawaiian dish. Japanese inspired, of course, but that's why the name of this spot is quite unique (although not catchy). Catch of the day. Rack of the day. So how'd I get here? You ask? ASK ME. Fine! I'll answer. Calm down, needy much? I'm an active guy. I participate in activities. Typically solo, I'm riding solo I'm riding solo solooooo. Man, just imagine walking down the city streets with a Walkman in blasting Les Miz. The dream. Anyways. I just got back from the island life and I was craving some fresh fish, at a sizable size with some balance of fruit, veggies, sauce and quantity for a beautiful price. And I just so happened to be running myself into the ground at the track in Irvington. Or was it that low-lying track in Hastings. The bees. The bumblebees. Maybe the hornets. It was Irvington. The bulldogs. Grrrrrr. I just ran myself into the ground. Sprints for about an hour. Bad hammy. Few months later tore the calf while calfmaxxing. Probably related. First muscle injury in a spinning dixie, gotta have muscles to injure them? Not really but that's what I'll tell myself. So I rip the farmers market. Then I rip the soosh spot, ordered online. Walked in, handsomely. Very friendly and respectful and nice staff and have been everytime I've gone since. The weight of the food in hand was ridonk so I was optimistic. I also got a few desserts down the road. Some hardbody that was completely eyeing down my grass-fed grass-finished hog at the track was somehow now across the street drinking a protein smoothie. My aura stinks of grandeur, but I avoid it. I'm taken lady. Did she follow me? Gross. What a joke. Really put things into perspective. I'm a fat slob, a professional self sabotager. But I work hard for this fat and that's what makes me a special boy. Hawaii Japanese Cuisine has the best poke in the area. They never let you down. I never let you down. Benvolio. As your voice of reason, I reason you to give it a go. A humble hero in Hastings.

I've driven by many times and never even knew they existed! I opted for the build your own bowl and what an experience. There are soooo many options for fixins and for the bowl itself. You can get 2 proteins or 3. For my bowl this time I got the 2 proteins with half brown rice half green salad with kani of course. For fixins I added cucumbers, edamame, masago, radishes, seaweed salad, sesame seeds, crispy onions, scallions, ginger and for 1$ extra avocado. I added classic shoyu which is basically just soy sauce. I wish they gave a better description for their sauces. My partner ordered the 2 protein bowl with brown rice, grilled chicken, shrimp, sweet corn and added eel sauce. Everything was so delicious and fresh. Vegetables had a nice crunch which lets me know just how fresh. Was a little disappointed in the amount of kani I got but was delicious nonetheless. Note the kani is shredded very thinly. For 16$ this bowl is a perfect little lunch.

What an unexpected bright spot in my day!…read more I stopped by Pokemoto and ordered the Signature Hawaiian bowl along with mac salad, and everything was fresh, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying. As someone who spent two months in Hawaii, I have a soft spot for Hawaiian-inspired food, and this meal definitely brought back some great memories. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxed. I brought my laptop and spent some time working while I ate, and the vibe was perfect--comfortable, clean, and inviting. The owner was especially kind and made everyone feel welcome. You can tell there's genuine care behind both the food and the customer experience. One of my favorite surprises was the complimentary Dole Whip-style frozen pineapple dessert. I wasn't expecting it, and it instantly transported me back to the Dole Plantation in Hawaii. It was the perfect sweet finish to a delicious meal. The decor was cheerful, the staff was friendly, and the food was fresh, light, and full of flavor. I also appreciate that there are plenty of options for those looking for gluten-friendly choices. I'm not from the area, but this is absolutely a place I'd return to. Great food, great people, and a genuinely positive experience from start to finish. Highly recommend!

Thanks to the Yelpers I found this spot which did not disappoint! *AMBIANCE* It's a no frills, minimalistic restaurant but don't be deceived because the food speaks for itself. You can either find street parking or there's a metered lot across the street. We had a late lunch so there were open tables inside, and a few outdoor tables to enjoy your noms. *FOOD* I ordered the roll lunch set ($18), not only because variety is the spice of life, but I love having sushi, soup and some sides. The sushi was very fresh and I loved the gyoza, spinach, egg sides. We also ordered the tempura duo ($14) appetizer which was perfectly crisp. The shrimp and the veggie tempura were probably some of the best tempura I've had. Highly recommend the lunch sets (which are offered until 3:30pm)! *SERVICE* Service was fast, friendly and attentive. Overall, come hungry and leave with a sense of joy and possibly a mild food coma after!

The pro tip here is to get a pound of the candied pecans to take home with you, they are life affirming. Are you disappointed by the dearth of decent cheese in the United States? Well Mint has a panoply of incredible cheeses from Europe and the charcuterie and cheese plate gives you an almost indecent amount of cured meats and stunning cheeses with freshly toasted baguette and a generous portion of Membrillo for a very reasonable (in today's economy) $29. You might be tempted by the Moroccan Chicken, and you should be, it is delicious but for me they do a really amazing Steak Frites that is cooked to perfection. I ordered mine "à point" or medium rare and it was absolutely as advertised. My husband had the Cuban on gluten free bread and was very happy with it. The ambience of the restaurant is really nice, it is very warm and inviting with cool decoration and big vats of marinated olives and other delicious mezze, or Kamio to be nationally accurate. Check out the cheese selection in my photos, it really is S tier.

This place felt a bit gloomy and down but either way I came in for a smoothie as I was in between work and needed a quick pick me upper that wouldn't take too much time and would feel me up. I ordered a Bango Boss with banana, flax seed, peanut butter, chocolate protein and almond milk. Loved that I was able to customize the chocolate protein and milk for a plant based one. They have a program to text when your table was ready, so we went for a walk in the neighborhood while we waited. A surprisingly short time later, we received the text that our table was ready! The menu(s) had a wonderful selection of food and drinks, along with some specials. They do use a QR code for their menus, but noticed they also had paper menus upon request. Our server was friendly and attentive. The other members of staff would also check in as they passed by. My boyfriend enjoyed the PB & J Latte along with the creole shrimp Benedict. He said it was seasoned well, right level of spice, stated the eggs were poached perfectly, and really enjoyed how moist the cornbread was. I indulged with the "Tipsy Palmer" which is an Arnold Palmer with Bourbon in it. To be honest, there wasn't much of a bourbon taste to it, if any at all, but for a summer brunch drink, it was refreshing. For my entree, I chose the chicken Caesar sliders. To be honest, I was a bit disappointed as the brioche buns seemed a little on the stale/stiff side. The homemade caesar dressing was delicious, but they only coated the lettuce in it which resulted in a bit of a dry slider. I believe the sliders would benefit from a bit of the dressing at least on the bottom of the bun. I asked for (and received) a side of the dressing to bring home to dress up my remaining sliders. Lastly, and I know this is extremely minor, but the silverware was placed incorrectly (knife and fork reversed with the knife edge in the wrong direction). Again, I am WELL AWARE this is minor, but for me, sometimes the minor details are the things that stand out. Overall, a wonderful experience and will try them again at a later date.
