There are a lot of things to like about this produce market. I visited for the first time today and found all the staff friendly. There's a variety of plants and vegetables. I was able to pickup a few tomato plants for $1.98 each. The heirloom tomatoes are tasty but they're a product of Canada. I noticed the stickers after I'd already purchased. Whenever possible I prefer local grown but I understand that's sometimes a challenge. They have delicious cookies, bread and oatmeal pies from Montana Good Bread Co. read more

This is the best produce stand I've ever been to. Amazing high quality veggies, other fun additions and fruits when in season. I will lead with I am a huge fan of Pole Green Produce. I get a little sad when they close for the season, but I would hardly call it a local stand. Yes, they have a lot of local (Virginia) products but they also sell a host of products branded the same as what you find at a better price in the local grocery store. I say this not as a criticism but to provide an accurate description of the products. I understand that it is impractical to run an operation this size selling only local products: growing seasons are simply too short in Virginia. Pole Green Produce sells both VA and SC peaches. The SC peaches I bought last week we're cold from refrigeration but sitting out in 90-degree temperatures. As a result, they were only good for about a day. I bought them knowing this and prepared to use or freeze them ASAP. It is important to note that Pole Green Produce clearly labels the origins of their products. On the other hand , I think their labeling of their payment policy is deceptive. There is a large-print sign at each register stating that they offer a 3.5% cash discount but when you read the longer, smaller font explanation says that they add a surcharge. These are two very different policies resulting in a seemingly deceptive practice. read more

At the moment, Pole Green Produce has so many pumpkins of all shapes and sizes, mums, apples and other local produce. The prices for the pumpkins and mums are so much cheaper than Lowe's or the big box stores. I grew up in the area (moved away many years ago) and I remember then this was just a tiny farm stand. They've expanded quite a bit, but in a good way. We switched from another produce stand to this much larger one during the pandemic due to this owner's respect for social distancing and the need for masks. We are very glad we did, as this was definitely a "trade up!" Excellent assortment of fresh veggies, clearly labeled as to whether locally obtained or not, if there is any ambiguity (we don't get local bananas in Virginia, but there is a big difference between a local tomato and one trucked in from Florida.) Well stocked. Everything is always top quality and very fresh. Almost everything is select-your-own from bins or crates, not prepackaged. (Some minor exceptions.) Prices are very good. Hidden gem: local oysters (shucked, jarred) at reasonable prices. Open air, room to get past each other. We make this a go-to stop on our food shopping trips. Worth the miles. read more

I love going out to Pole Green for fresh local vegetables, it's not cheap but it's fresh and they have a great variety to choose from. I don't mind paying for local produce, it tastes better and it's important to support local farmers and the community. Is there a little sticker shock initially? Maybe, it's so worth it! They also have plants and flowers, baked goods, and some non-local produce, but the non-local is still from the USA and from what I have observed, procured from the east coast (NC cantaloup, peaches from SC, for example). Another thing I love about Pole Green produce, the people! Year after year the faces stay familiar, and they always offer to carry purchases to the car. Quite possibly any other day, this may have been a really good find, but today, it ummm lacked some sparkle. Not to say this is a bad place, it isn't. It was just a long drive to find a decent sized, but not very large produce stand. The stand mixes some locally grown produce, as well as items that can likely be found in your local grocery store. The reward is if you buy the local items, the quality and pricing is great. If it is produce shipped in, you're likely to be better off going to Kroger's. This is a large produce stand with many options for produce and even eggs, ham, honey and other local goods. We stopped by for the pumpkin harvest and we enjoyed ourselves. They had wagons available for shopping, but our son enjoyed riding and pushing/pulling the wagon as we picked our family pumpkin. They also had a lot of Halloween/Autumn decor, lots of flowers, a hay slide and a hay maze! The service was friendly and quick and parking was ample. We will definitely be back. Bought un shucked corn on Sunday 7/15/2018 came home and shucked it and found the ears were mal shaped with half the kernals missing - an indicator of poor polination I am told. I called Pole Green this morning and was told that they had shucked corn at a higher price that I could have bought and that they would not have packaged corn such a this. The un shucked corn display does not invite you to shuck it or provide trash can like at Tom Leonard's - I guess it's buyer beware at Pole Green. They offered to refund my money if I brought a sales slip-not going to drive 30 miles round trip! read more

I was there this week and it was great as always. Only thing missing was the japanese ( finger) eggplant. I saw the sign but when asked , no one really helped. they should take sign down if they don't have it is my suggestion. rest of veggies was wonderful. They also offer Stuarts Fresh seafood choices. Nice farmers market with fresh flowers, produce, and baked goods. Be careful, not all produce is "local." Read labels and signs carefully. They accept credit cards and cash which is convenient. Most of the jams, sauces and honey are brought in from Maryland. I picked up some cantaloupe, peaches, zucchini bread and peanut butter cookies. All very delicious.
