I have been looking for a contender for best OKC fried chicken since The Drum Room closed. My first visit to any Pollo Campero location left me thinking that I may have found an adequate replacement. I ordered a 2 piece dark meal with sides of coleslaw and corn tortillas. The chicken was served almost too hot to eat, which I very much liked. The breading was a bit too sweet and heavy, but I have worse at other places. There were delicious crispy bits of skin on each piece, and all of the chicken was completely cooked. I didn't expect much out of the coleslaw. When I order coleslaw at most quick-service restaurants, it's usually too sweet, too warm, or both. This was neither. Although it was sweet, it was just below my personal threshold for too sweet. After my first two bites, I was delighted to have the next two bites colder(!). I think that coleslaw tastes better when served cold, and that extra burst of cold told me that they kept this particular batch of coleslaw cold before they served it to me. I had a smaller appetite at lunch, so I saved the corn tortillas for later. They were fine accompaniments to a later meal. The speed of service was fast for me but slow for my dining companion. His meal took twice as long to arrive as mine. Then the server forgot to bring out silverware for him. He had to return to the front cash register to request some. On the other hand, it's nice to visit a quick-service restaurant that provides metal silverware instead of plastic silverware. They also serve their food on colorful ceramic plates. Definitely plan to return to try the white meat fried chicken and the grilled chicken. read more

The empanadas are very delicious. It reminds me of Chilis southwest egg rolls. I just need some delicious avocado ranch! The service was a little slow because they had to reboot the system. I don't usually write reviews for fast food chain so for me to write one could only mean one of two things: I really like the place or I despise it with all my heart. Luckily, for Pollo Campero, I think it's wonderful. For one, it has fried chicken. Any business that offers fried chicken has my support 100 percent of the time as it is one of my favorite food. Secondly, it has fried sweet plantains as a side, my other favorite food. The fried chicken actually taste better than from some Hispanic restaurants. Flavor-wise, it's definitely different than fast food chains like KFC or Church's which is nice. Whether it's flavorful to you is subjective and up for debate. I would go to Pollo Campero over the other mentioned names because of the different available sides items. I feel like I am tired of the same old sides that have been available for eons. The building is nice and clean. The building itself has undergone a few different restaurants before becoming Pollo Campero but I have feeling it's going to last because of this type of food. read more

The food was delicious. I wasn't too hungry then, so I got their salad. It was full of fresh ingredients and was very flavorful. And the price was reasonable. I was excited to try the yucca fries, but they didn't wow me. It was very oily, and there wasn't much meaty flesh. Lastly, ordering from the drive-thru was very slow, so we are probably going in next time. read more

Love this place. Where can you you get sweet fried plantains, horchata, and Jamaica it's free refills? My families favorite chicken joint.

I keep snacking on my menu favorites here, so funny enough I have yet to try their signature grilled or fried pollo. But their chicken empanadas and fried plantains are outstanding! Those alone are enough to drive out of one's way for. And the prices on their snacks and sides are very fair. Especially on Tuesdays when you can add empanadas for $1 instead the usual $2. They have Guatemalan roots, so no tacos or burritos here, but they do have aguas frescas like horchata and mango. I've only done their drive thru so far, which has been very fast with friendly service. Since I'm practically addicted to two of their menu items, I'm doing it, I'm giving them 5 stars for the time being. And it will likely stay that unless trying their chicken eventually changes my mind. I'm so glad we have them in the metro, I just wish they were closer to my house. read more

Pollo Campero is a great family spot (large table seating and mounds of chicken to share) but unfortunately, the flavors are mediocre at best. The chicken is the best thing on the menu but it's not as flavorful or cooked as well as other name-brand places. The process they use for cooking the chicken is amazing to watch, they have it down to a T. The chicken and sandwiches were not amazing, they were just okay. I'd say avoid the empanadas. They are straight from the freezer and kind of soggy when you get them. Not what I was expecting at all. Yes, I'm that girl. That girl who loves her some Pollo Campero. Do NOT do the fried chicken or chicken nuggets or even chicken wings. DO the grilled chicken. ALWAYS. Not sure why folks go to a place that specializes in marinated grilled chicken & order something completely different. For sides, I like the corn salad & beans (has pork which I try to refrain from so....). Trust me on that corn salad. Sounds weird but it is wildly good. Wildly. Plantains are pretty good too and of course rice. Get corn tortillas instead of the roll, bc the roll is just a Hawaiian roll disguised. And corn tortillas are so nice bc you can make mini-tacos with all sorts of random ingredients you have from your meal. Yum!!! Reasonable prices. Really. 3.5 Stars. Since the Colonel came out with extra crispy, the meat has taken a backseat to the breading at most fast food chicken restaurants. Not here. I had eaten at Pollo Campero some years ago in Florida. It was good, and I've been anxious to try the one that just opened here. It's my understanding they had to hire police to direct the long lines of cars waiting to get in. I can't say my opinion has changed. As chain chicken joints go, it's not bad. There are some things they do really well. So well, in fact, that I it nearly pushed me to give a fourth star. I ordered the 12-piece with half grilled, half fried. My sides were French fries, Cole slaw, potatoes and gravy, and plantains. The pieces were nicely sized, except for the three tiny chicken legs. The fried is coated with more of a seasoning than a batter. The grilled is marketed as Citrus Peruvian chicken. There is a lot of lime, and it gave me a bit of a pucker. Both styles were OK, but what's inside was so much better. I loved the meat. It was perfectly moist and tender, and nearly got them a fourth star. The sides were decent. The coleslaw was crisp, but wetly dressed and salty. The fries were fries. The mashed potatoes were good, but I loved the brown gravy. It was thicker and darker with a nice beefy flavor. And if I'm thrilled about anything, it's that I have a place to get good fried plantains. They were plump and slightly sweet as they should be. If you haven't tried them with a bit of sour cream, you should. So please come give it a try. read more

This place was an a total surprise! I stopped there by chance one day ready to pass out from hunger after working out. The name had me thinking tacos when I saw fried chicken I was initially disappointed. Then I saw empanadas on the menu and got happy. I ordered a couple and pulled around. Waiting to pay I saw the most glorious looking chicken pop up in the hot window! My tune changed quick. I added a piece to my order and they threw in a grilled piece on the house! They were amazingly delicious! I told me family and the next time I picked up food for me and the kids we ordered a full spread from here! The chicken (fried and grilled), the yuca fries and corn salad are all stupid good! I wasn't super impressed with the beans and the rolls were served cold. Okay so, this place opened up down the street from me less than a year ago and idk why it's taken me so long to try it! I went straight for the chicken sandwich, and goddamn it's one of the best ones I've had. They should definitely be in the conversation of who has the best chicken sandwich. Tender white meat, crispy/crunchy breading that doesn't fall apart or crumble when you bite into it, and the meat is far from dry. The sauce is what sets it off! The signature sauce tastes like a blend of mustard & thousand island, but I'm no expert. I could be completely wrong but that's what it reminds me of. it's tangy and delicious! The fries remind me of a perfect mix if McDonald's and Burger King's fries had a baby. They goooood. Delicious grilled chicken! I love all the sides. I love that the food is served on real plates with real silverware. This restaurant is very popular with a Spanish speaking crowd. But don't let that keep you away, gringos. They do such a good job. The food is always fresh and the staff is always friendly. I ordered their chicken nuggets which they call "camperitos" and I have only one word:DON'T! They were horrid. Essentially cardboard that was over-fried and too hard to eat. Pollo Campero is a family business that started in Guatemala, I find it to be "Muy Bueno", they serve both fried and grilled chicken, however this is not your good ole' southern fry or flamed grilled chicken. My hubby and I ordered the half-chicken special, that comes with 2 sides and your choice of tortillas or dinner rolls; I ordered the breast & wing grilled and leg and thigh fried, my hubby ordered the breast and wing fried and the leg and thigh grilled. The chicken is marinated in a seasoned citrus blend giving a delicious flavor. The fried chicken has a citrus seasoning, lightly floured and fried golden brown - very tasty and tender. The grilled chicken was my favorite, each bite was tender and full of citrus flavor. For my sides I ordered Campero beans, which had pork, green chilies and pinto beans- very good. The corn salad had corn, chopped green chilies, green onion, Pepita's, cotija cheese and a citrus vinaigrette - was very good. Their staff is very friendly and helpful, ample parking. read more

We went for the first time today. The chicken was moist but not greasy. I had the crispy chicken sandwich and it was crispy and moist. The sauce was so flavorful! The bun was toasty and much better than a plain sesame burger bun like at other places. My BF had the grilled chicken. Very moist and clearly made by hand and not mass prepared in some factory somewhere. We tried some crispy chicken and it was so crispy and juicy. The fries are firm and crunchy, very tasty! We both had the corn salad as a side. Absolutely. Delicious. I usually can't stand cilantro but the other ingredients were so flavorful that the cilantro did not overpower the salad. It was my first taste of pepitas and now I see why people roast and eat them. The extra crispy chicken and corn salad alone was so filling. A woman had come out and we spoke briefly with her. She was very friendly and answered our questions with patience. The cashier was very soft spoken but patient as we had her repeat herself. It was a little loud at the time and my bf is hard of hearing so it wasn't her fault. They have very unique sides. Yucca and the corn salad were something I hadn't seen on a menu before, at least not at a fast food establishment. They had mango drink, horchata and Manzana soda too along with Pepsi (coke?) Drinks. Wow. The grilled chicken is incredibly flavorful and moist and the fried chicken was super crispy and crunchy. Ask for extra limes for the grilled chicken. Ordered the yuca fries, crunchy but needs a sauce of some sort to go with it. Ordered through the drive through, pretty quick and easy. Amazing chicken!! Wow I was blown away by how good this place was. Fried chicken and the grilled chicken were both great. Has a neat Hispanic flare. They have interesting sides like fried yucca fries, corn salad (like elotes), beans, rice, mashed potatoes, regular fries. The fried chicken was both juicy and tender with good flavor and the crispy coating was really good. The grilled chicken was also full of flavor with hint of citrus lime and seasoning and very juicy. Got a grilled Chicken sandwich as well but the chicken pieces are the star ( we got the half chicken). They have cool beverages like horchata or mango. They have fried plantains with are like sweet cooked bananas. The service was friendly and helpful as we said we had never been. Inside is really clean, spacious and they serve on actual plates. Pollo Campero is our favorite chicken place in a swarm of chicken places. The selection of sides makes it a lot more interesting than French fries. We love the yucca/cassava fries which are crispy and tender. A second side favorite is the plantain, ripe, sweet, tender and perfectly caramelized.
