One of my favorite dishes was the Octopus Chicharron Tacos, made of crispy deep-fried pieces of octopus, served with guacamole, lettuce, and habanero mayonnaise on blue corn tortillas. The tacos had a nice combination of crispy, salty octopus with creamy guacamole and spicy habanero mayo. From the cooked dishes on the menu, we got the Grilled Octopus, a small whole octopus marinated and grilled in Yucatán recado and served with sweet potato chips, salad, and a creamy banana pepper and tomato sauce; as well as the Catch of the Day, a thick filet of mahi mahi topped with ajillo (a non-spicy pepper with a citrus flavor), and served with mashed potatoes, salad, and buttered vegetables on the side. It took about 20 min for the tostadas to come out, the ceviche was heavy on carrot (something unique about ceviche in PV) and was mostly what I could taste, the crab tostada was better and the best thing we had. Then we waited and waited, I saw that others who ordered before us were also still waiting but about 3:30 is when our shrimp tacos finally arrived! There was an elderly white American couple with their grandkids seated near us and you could tell they had been waiting an eternity as well because the kids were literally falling asleep in their chairs. After the shrimp tacos were consumed I was worried how long for the fish, so I asked the girl clearing tables that we were still waiting for 4 fish tacos, she said ok and reminded the cook that we needed the rest of our order. Another 15 minutes and we finally had all our food. By this time everyone we had ordered with has come and gone. Despite the insane wait, I might have been ok with it if the food was great but it was so disappointing. The shrimp taco was mostly batter with hardly any shrimp. The fish taco was better but again nothing special. The best thing was the freshly made tortilla it was served on. Then came time to lay the bill, I went up to pay and the receipt had a charge for 8 fish tacos. When I politely corrected saying we only had 4 the cashier spoke to what appeared to be the manager, and was told to take off $100 pesos... mind you each taco is $50 pesos, so they still upcharged me $100 pesos! I was livid but decided to just pay and take the receipt as proof of my terrible experience. I'm so confused because this has not been typical of my experience at PV restaurants, everyone is usually exceedingly nice and attentive. This is a pretty good street food restaurant in Puerto Vallarta. It's not near the top of the best…read morein town, but it's decent and reasonably priced. We stop here for lunch every time we visit PV, as it's always a solid, reliable choice. As their name would suggest, El Camaron Express specializes in shrimp. If you eat here, get something with shrimp (or at least fish) in it. I love the shrimp quesadilla, which is basically a taco filled with grilled shrimp and melted cheese. The burritos are large and tasty too. They offer free corn chips and a salsa bar (don't be intimidated, just take your plate up there and load up). This time I didn't love my quesadilla because the cook burned the cheese (see photos). They also add avocado slices and I'm more of a purist and would just prefer cheese and shrimp. The portion sizes are large and they do not skimp on the shrimp! There is an assortment of legit hot sauces on every table as well as extra at the salsa bar. Watch out, some are crazy hot and will light your mouth on fire. The dining room is outdoors but they've added a roof for shelter from the harsh sun and PV's frequent rain showers, which is very nice. While tourists are welcome here, the menus are in Spanish (so get out your translation guide). Note that you can order either grilled or fried seafood so if you do not want fried, make sure you let them know. Our entire lunch cost $250.00 pesos ($110 for the burrito, $90 for the quesadilla, and $50 for two Diet Cokes in the bottle -- which taste sooooo good in Mexico). That's about $14 in U.S. dollars. It's cheap, fast, and tasty, and a good stop if you need a break in PV.
