Seated in upper floor, good location to people watch. Start of Labor Day weekend so Jammed with local Mexican families and tourists. I love my Chile Rellenos and was excited to try real authentic Mexican Rellenos. Big difference from the tex mex dishes I've experienced. Poblano Pepper was large and very soft stuff with melt in your mouth cheese, no cheese pull here. We ordered this with shrimp, glad we did as the shrimp was in large chunks and firm. All covered in the house sauce which was delicious. The Mexican plate is meant to be shared, the mole sauce on the enchilada was chocolatey, an acquired taste for sure, flank steak was over marinated, plain cheese Chile relleno with beans, rice, taco chips and napole (cactus). A nice plate if you're with a group. The shrimp ceviche was excellent and refreshing Staff was excellent and quick to explain how their sauces are made. This was the best dinner we had our whole trip. It's run by the nicest, most friendly family, too. We felt very welcome and you could really relax and enjoy your meal. We absolutely loved sitting upstairs and taking in the atmosphere. One of the best meals I've had in a long time (whole fried red snapper with garlic -- caught that morning!) Beat margarita, too - jamaica margaritas are magical! Also: loved their cat who I coaxed out from hiding and was able to give pets to (if there's a pet to be pet, the place gets extra bonus points!!) The ambiance was a little weird- super dark upstairs and the fans blowing like crazy (which did feel nice, my hair just looked crazy). My wife and I went here for our last dinner. Come here first! The food was great. My wife had the fresh red snapper, fried crispy and very mild not fishy at all. Started out w/ the best waiters , hostess ever . Menus were brought to our table of 3 and the fish ceviche for starters turned me on ... I asked the waiter what type of fish was used in the ceviche and he said fresh mahi -mahi ... Bring it on I said and about 15 mins later fresh mahi-mahi ceviche served w/ fresh corn tortilla chips was served !!! OMG soooooooo good ,,, I swear ,,, so fresh,,, so perfect !!! After we all slammed the ceviche down we decided to order meal plates ... I ordered the carne enchiladas w/mole sauce accompanied w/ the best rice and beans!!! I forget to take a pic of my plate bcuz I was so eager to scarf it down . My partner ordered a Chile Relleno Plate and it was award winning ... I know bcuz I sampled a few scoops of her plate ... I also ordered aguas fresca / passion fruit which was the real authentic deal !!! The ambiance was lovely and very entertaining. There was a lovely young lady standing out singing popular hits . First night in Sayulita and was blown away from the food here! One of the best if not the best meal we've had on our trip so far plus its so much cheaper than Puerto Vallarta, like half the price which makes it even better. I'm a huge foodie and I've been on the hunt for a good fried fish and molcajete, this place had both! Also their homemade lemonade is really good too. Sayulita Cafe is an energizing spot for an open air meal. The molcajete and huachinango (red snapper) are both 5/5. After trying three other versions in Puerto Vallarta, the huachinango at Sayulita Cafe is the best red snapper we've had on our entire trip. Hands down one of the best dinners we had in Sayulita! A party of TWENTY of us walked in without reservations one night at around 8pm, and our servers generously rearranged half of the restaurant to accommodate us, even though we had to sit in separate areas of the restaurant (half of us were indoors, half had street seating). The experience was great from start to finish. The food was amazing - I went with the Carne Asada plate which was delicious and came in a generous portion. The waiter was extremely patient and friendly even when accommodating tough food allergies and dietary restrictions, and helped us navigate through the ingredients in every dish. Our server had the patience of a saint, for sure. The service was not only friendly, but extremely attentive. Sure, it took some time to get our drinks, but when a party of 20 walks into an already packed restaurant, what do you expect? The ambiance was certainly lively and fun. Definitely a good dinner spot for a party. The drinks were 'meh.' Some were extremely strong while others were definitely very watered down. Dividing our bill up was confusing as hell, but again, our server was patient and walked us through all of the items we ordered and made corrections to the bill accordingly when we spotted that we were charged for an extra drink. Service was good, but the food was not. Sayulita Cafe is no longer good. Went there after remembering it to be really good food. That's no longer the case. Margaritas were incredibly sweet and made with artificial sweetener. (We ordered a second with out and it was much better but still not good) Guacamole was generous portion put tasted liked bagged (vs fresh avocados) And their 'famous' Chile Relleno was soggy and fairly bland. Super disappointing experience with too many red flags. We had an inexcusable thing happen- the food was taking a long time to come out and the server brought us chips and salsa. We were excited until we noticed the chips were half empty and the salsa was almost empty on the tri-salsa bowl that came out. We looked at it and all thought the same thing- was this the leftovers of someone else's salsa? We asked the waiter, he laughed, and admitted it was. WHAT?! . The location is great and the food is cheap, but serving a group leftovers from someone else's table is gross- especially during Covid. We didn't leave a great tip because of the reasons above and the waiter confronted us and argued with us about tipping more. The cherry on top was when I walked out of the bathroom at the same time as one of the bussers. I washed my hands in the shared sink and he went straight back to work. The food wasn't very good- there are too many authentic Mexican food restaurants in this plaza to spend your time here. The drinks weren't very good either I wouldn't recommend this. read more

Stopped by for dinner on a Tuesday mid January. This is a fairly large establishment with patio / street seating and both inside and upper balcony seating. We selected seating on the upper balcony. The service was quite good and our server was very attentive and pleasant. I decided to try the fajita's and this was a much better food experience than the last time I tried them in Sayulita. The onions and peppers were cooked perfectly and it was served on a sizzling skillet. It included rice, beans and guacamole...a nice compliment to the fajita's. The salsa was also quite good. The chicken and beef were very moist and tender, and the sauces and salsas were soo flavorful. Tortillas were delicious but didn't withstand how much I filled them with ;) that's my fault though. My husband's fajitas arrived in flames... lol! Great presentation by the waiter. He said everything tasted delicious. We got tons of entertainment in the street, from a mariachi singer to a machete and flame thrower. It was a fun first evening. This is a great restaurant for traditional Mexican food. Of this 'authentic' Mexican cantinas in Sayulita, Sayulita Cafe stands out. Carefully prepared entrees that are filled with fresh ingredients. We enjoyed the service from Thomas - he was dashing and a bit cheeky, and he made sure that our evening was special. The restaurant is clean and has great ambiance. Entrees are a fairly priced and resemble home cooked food, in a good way. Street performers serenaded us with some classic rock, for which we were happy to tip. Portions range from generous to ridiculous, everything was DELICIOUS, and the waiter was friendly and so attentive he picked up on my son having a hard time with the volume of the music and turned it down without us saying anything. Dare I say it? I think I had some of the best meals of my life here. Wow, wow, wow. So amazing! It's great to sit upstairs on the balcony and look down on the night life. Even if it's raining cats and dogs, you are nice and dry there, being entertained and well-fed. Makes for some of the best evenings for sure! The guys who run this place are genuinely nice and friendly. You know they love their job and their town. It shows in every detail. Is it fine dining? No. But it's authentic dining. With some of the best and freshest ingredients you can imagine. Try the Aztec inspired dishes or just your run-of-the mill comfort food. Everything is amazing. Molcajete for the win! I would avoid this place. The mixed and other alcohol drinks are horrible. The food tastes good and is presented well. Here is the major problem with this place... Be prepared to leave a large tip or the waiter will throw a fit and stick the tip in your face and yell "SALUDE?!, SALUDE?! THATS A SMALL TIP!" Very inappropriate to treat a guest so poorly, even if there was no tip. Remember, Europeans don't generally tip (only confused tourists tip) and Canadas customarily leave smaller tips than Americans. I'm sure his antics work on some and bring in extra money for him. I would just avoid the place. There's a lot of pleasant places in the area. read more

Every evening we walked by this place seemed to be full of happy people enjoying their meals and their lives, so eventually we tried it too. The food was quite good -- another excellent rendition of a chile relleno, and a massive rendition of the mocajete, essentially a giant stone mortar filled with a mixed grill of beef, chicken, sausage, cheese, and vegetables and sitting in a flavorful sauce. It wasn't as good as the mocajete I've been dreaming about for the last five years (from Cheen Huaye, in a strip mall in northern Miami) but it was still very satisfying. I absolutely adore this place. I had dinner here twice and both times, the server welcomed me warmly and provided great + attentive service. He is a super friendly, kind man who genuinely enjoys connecting with his community. His adorable and naturally shy 9-year-old son, Carlos, works here by his side delivering drinks + checks :) I sat upstairs on the balcony, which was a fun way to sip my drink and watch the locals + tourists interact on the streets. With everything I ate there, I felt like I was having proper Mexican foods for the first time, deeming anything I've had previously in the US (mostly, if not all, Cal/Tex-Mex) and my limited concepts of Mexicans cuisine, embarrassingly insignificant. For my first dinner, I had their mojito, tortilla soup + molcajate azteca. A sip of their refreshing mojito gave me an idea of what was to come. Their tortilla soup was divine. I've never had tortilla soup like this. I savored every spoonful. I will definitely be dreaming of this soup time and again. Their molcajate azteca was impressive in its display and so flavorful. It comes with beans, rice, tortillas and an array of salsas. It's a pretty hefty order. You could easily split this, especially if you are having appetizers or other small plates. I surprisingly wasn't able to finish it and I have a pretty huge appetite ;p For my second dinner, I had their mojito, tortilla soup and shrimp chile relleno. Again, I thought, "What the hell kind of chile rellenos have I been eating?!" It was delicious with warm spices and flavors. My friend, who is a local, had one of her favorite dishes -- nopales salad -- which she recommends :) I would highly recommend coming here at least once during your trip. The staff is wonderful and the food, divine. My whole experience both times were some of my favorites during my trip.
