It's a must if you like German food and are on the riverwalk. Trust me...don't waste your time on…read moreother places. So few are good but this has been a staple since 1917. To remain that long in anything, they have to be doing something right. The Reuben is a perfect Reuben as you'd expect. The chicken and dumplings are a good hidden gem, especially if it's cold or you're hung over. The hefeweizen on tap is the bomb. The breaded cutlets...all of them...pork, veal, and chicken are fantastic. The deviled eggs are purely what you'd expect. The atmosphere is pristinely German. The German chocolate cake is delicious. The potato salad is very good and nothing funky. This place is exactly perfectly German and if you know...you know. Don't forget the homemade root beer.

Unfortunately, the food was very disappointing, which is why I'm giving 3 stars. I ordered the veal Schnitzel with mushroom gravy (Jägerschnitzel) and red cabbage. The gravy had a strange gelatin-like consistency and lacked the rich flavor you'd expect from a proper Jäger sauce. The veal was extremely chewy and honestly made me feel ill afterward. The red cabbage was also very undercooked and completely lacked flavor. Overall, I personally did not find the food authentic or representative of true German cooking. What truly saved this experience was the outstanding customer service. Our server, Joseph, was attentive, professional, and genuinely kind throughout the meal. I also greatly appreciated Mr. Adam, the kitchen manager, who personally came out to discuss my concerns. He handled the constructive criticism with professionalism and openness, and I truly respected the fact that he listened carefully and considered my feedback regarding the sauce. Although I wouldn't personally return for the food, Joseph and Mr. Adam turned what could have been a terrible experience into one where I still felt valued as a customer. Their professionalism absolutely deserves recognition.

It's the kind of place folks drift into and, before long, start calling their own. The people there carry themselves with quiet pride--no fuss, no show--just a steady hand at their work and a genuine welcome for whoever steps through the door. The menu ain't thrown together. It's been shaped with care, like a well-tuned string on a guitarra, each choice meant to stand on its own but better still when taken together. The flavors come through bold and honest, with a little flourish here and there--nothing overdone, just enough to remind you somebody back there knows what they're about. It's a small spot, sure, but that only draws folks closer. Feels a bit like gathering under a shaded porch after a long day--easy talk, shared laughter, and the sense you're among friends, whether you've known 'em years or just met 'em. Every greeting carries the warmth of old ties, like you've been welcomed back rather than simply let in. And the food--well, it doesn't hold back. Each bite's got a richness that settles in and makes you slow down, take notice, and then go back for more. It's the kind of meal that stays with you, the way a good story does. Spend a little time there with friends, and you'll come away knowing you've found something true--a place where the spirit of San Antonio, with its charro heart and neighborly ways, lives on in every plate set down and every hand extended in welcome.

Unpopular opinion incoming: I'm not overly impressed. A good sandwich is one of my favorite things,…read moreso this joint's been on my radar for a while. So, when co-workers wanted to go yesterday, I jumped on it. Don't get me wrong. I love the vibe of this place. I LOVE their story. It's very NY/Northeastern deli feel (they're from Pittsburgh, but you get my drift, right!?). No nonsense. Small inside area. No tables inside. Just enough room to look at the menu, order, and go wait outside. I opted for the chicken bacon ranch on hoagie. What came out was a decent size sandwich, but incredibly messy and soggy. There was so much juice/ liquid the sandwich quickly became unmanageable and just disintegrated. Look, if you're going to serve a sandwich that messy, please upgrade your napkins. It was a one bite - two napkin ratio. The sandwich was good, but the mess and difficulty eating it just took away any enjoyment. Additionally, the flies outside rivaled the worst I've experienced. Do you remember the scene in the Lost World, Jurassic Park movie when the hunters found the Rex nest!? Okay, okay, maybe not that bad, but it was a lot. Hang some fly bags or strips or somethin'. Found price to be a little high. By the time I bought chips and a drink, plus tip: $22. Just FYI: my co-worker disagrees. He thought it was the BEST SANDWICH HE'D EVER HAD. So, yes, go give them a try, but bring a beach towel for clean up.
