"Like eating at a delightful Persian friend's house..." This hole-in-the-wall is REALLY tucked away and hard to find. There are some other things to be aware of upfront: not many choices (3 rice variants and 3 stew-like main dishes), only accepts checks & cash, basically no indoor seating, and limited hours (close at 6:30pm, and closed completely on Sundays and Mondays). That said, it's very much like going to your friend's mom's house for dinner. The owner was WONDERFULLY nice to us and really treated us like honored guests for coming. She let us sample all the dishes before buying and gave insightful comments (no meat, no frozen or canned ingredients, nothing fried, everything cooked that day). The place really looked like a slightly larger than home kitchen, and she had the food simmering right there. Sanitation score was a great 99.5. But most of all, we really felt welcomed. We had all the available dishes: basmati rice, a lentil rice mix, a bean & rice mix, pomegranate stew (with walnuts), an eggplant stew, and a beet stew. I have to say- EVERYTHING was great! Everyone in my family loved the food. I especially liked the pomegranate stew and the bean & rice mix, but everything was delightful. The owner even gave us 2 extra dishes (including one off-menu soup) just to say she appreciated our business. Price is $11.95 for a rice dish and a stew (including tax). That may sound high, but the quantity was HUGE. I was absolutely stuffed at the end, and I'm a huge eater. Dishes also came with a small piece of bread and a Hershey's chocolate- some reviewers mocked this, but I thought it was a nice touch. Although there's no indoor seating, there's a decent courtyard right next to it that'd be OK for outdoor picnicking. In terms of just getting there, Oliver's directions were right- drive to the back of New Hope Commons (passing OfficeMax on your right) and then turn left. It's basically right there, but nearly impossible to see from any street. If you want to feel like you're being welcomed to a nice Persian lady's home for dinner (albeit for takeout), this is a place you should try.

I can't rave about this place enough! I'm Iranian and have tried dozens of Iranian restaurants in California and in the States generally, and this is definitely one of the best Iranian restaurants I've tried. Mally's food is delectable, complex, and so well done. You can tell her ingredients are high quality and fresh by the quality and taste of the food, though rich and flavorful, it's not heavy! I feel at home because of her food and her warmth :)

NC doesn't really have much Persian food to offer, so thank Mally for bringing a piece of home to the south. Though the menu's limited to a few items, each item is done well. I'm too American to appreciate the bold flavors of her pomegranate stew, but I recognize its quality from just a few bites. Her eggplant stew is where it's at though! Mally adds the right amount of herbs to make the dishes taste just right. I wish her kitchen was opened all day since it makes it hard to eat in. Anyway, please check it out if you're in the mood for a delicious meal. A few tips/tidbits: * It's cash only, so be prepared to fervently run to Wal-Mart if you're low on cash. * Mally has a stand at the Chapel Hill farmer's market. Grab some stew if you find yourself there on a cold Saturday morning. * She doesn't use butter(!!). * ASK FOR THE BURNT RICE--great little snack. * The kitchen is fresh. * Buy desserts next door at Big Bundts. The sweetest bakers sell some great goods only a few feet away. * Have an awesome conversation with her.

    Compact!

As other yelpers have mentioned, this is more of a kitchen than a restaurant, but gosh the food is wonderful. I came in around 5:50 PM, right before closing time. Had a great time chatting with the friendly and grandmotherly cook about the menu and local farmers markets. She was sold out of most things, but she served me the last portions of some pomegranate soup with basmati rice. The smell was amazing; by the time I got into the car I couldn't wait to dig in. The soup was a tart, sweet, and savory combination that worked perfectly together, with the rice serving as the anchor for all those flavors. As Mohamed N. mentioned, it's a bit hard to find; you have to enter a side road and pull around the the other side of the building. Also, it's cash only. However, the menu changes every day, with soups, rice, vegetable pies, and pastries, and it's all vegetarian. Overall, I wouldn't take this place for "pome"granted.

With the caveat that this is not a true restaurant so much as an open catering kitchen, the cooking here is impressively good and worthy of serious foodie admiration. The owner brings the authentic flavors and techniques of her Iranian heritage to the table, and does so impeccably. I was very impressed with the food. The cuisine is pure vegetarian, with savory flavors built on patient cooking and deft spicing. This said, there are a few things to keep in mind. Plating is decidedly unfussy - the dishes are paper takeout cartons - and seating consists of a few outdoor tables. The location is tucked away in a run-down shopping center that has seen better days. No cards are accepted; bring cash or checks. Probably a good thing as I would have gone home with far too much food including her homemade cardamon or saffron ice cream if tasting everything else hadn't run me out of cash. The owner was charming and gracious and very knowledgeable about the cuisine. Saffron rice with rosewater was amazing and the fesenjan dish the best rendition I have yet tasted despite being vegan. Celery stew had full, rich flavors and was hearty and satisfying. I will be hitting the bank and coming back here soon.

    Pomegranate stew over rice

I came across their stand at the Duke Farmer's market on Friday and was instantly drawn in by the delicious aromas wafting from the pomegranate stew. Unfortunately, they do not give out samples, but the two ladies working there both highly recommended it so I decided to go for it. Just the stew or just the lentil rice is $8, but you can get both for $10. They poured a spoonful of stew over a bed of rice, topping it off with a piece of crunchy rice crust from the bottom of the pot. The pomegranate stew is walnut based, with the right balance of tangy and sour. It pairs absolutely perfectly with the rice, which has lots of raisins mixed in that add a little sweetness. Do note that they don't take credit/debit cards.

In my memory it's even better in the new location. There's a mix of Turkish and other Mediterranean food on offer, and it was hard to make a choice. I got the falafel/hummus wrap and my companion got a salad. There is a small menu of beer and wine available, and we got a glass of white, and a non-alcoholic beer (Dry January). Both were perfectly fine for lunch. The food was super-fresh and well seasoned. The portions were more than enough for lunch. The only niggle is that the poor woman working as a server was all alone, and one person simply isn't enough to cover the whole place. We weren't in a hurry, but people trying to pack a visit into a short lunch hour might have been cramped. Anyway, we'll be back the next time we're in Durham for lunch.

The menu includes a few options with tempeh but is mostly vegetable based, and is not full of artificial fake meats or weird fusion stuff. Ordering a sprout salad was a good decision. I was worried the nuts would be excessive but it was a reasonable amount, and the dressing and finely shaved vegetables made for a light experience. My vegetable stew came with some aromatic rice, and a satisfying flavor mix. Ordering tea was a good idea as well; almost everything in this cuisine seems to be lime-flavored. The overall portion size for price was not overly favorable. The location is near the hospital system and in an area with dicey parking, it does have its own parking spots outside and in an adjoining garage.

Parking was tight but doable in the lot. The space is charming inside and out; the shaded patio has a nice vibe, though foot traffic to the entrance passes by those tables. Ordering is walk-up, and food is delivered to the table. Menu is broad with clear gluten-free indicators (huge plus). Coffee was dark and delicious, and service throughout was genuinely warm, knowledgeable, and fast -- easily 5 stars for hospitality. Getting to-go boxes was effortless and we were offered refills often. Food was a mixed bag. My wife had the gluten-free smoked salmon toast with avocado. She wished the veggies and tomato were grilled; the GF bread itself was very good, but the greens/tomato ended up pushed aside. I had the smoked salmon Benedict. The salmon portion felt light, and the hollandaise leaned more toward mustard than citrus and was a bit thin. Breakfast potatoes and veggies were nicely cut and well-seasoned but undercooked; same for the bacon, which tasted more tough than crisp. (I reheated the potatoes/veg at home -- flavor was there once cooked through.) Prices felt reasonable, ingredients seemed thoughtfully sourced, and the team's earnestness shines. With a little tighter execution (fully cooked potatoes/veg, crisper bacon, brighter/thicker hollandaise, slightly more salmon, grilled tomatoes), this would be an easy 5. I'll definitely be back -- I gave it a 3.7 but rounded it up to 4 stars for the service, coffee, and GF-friendly menu options.

We sat outside under their covered patio; it was drizzling when we arrived, but the space was still comfortable. When sitting outside you have to go inside to place your order but they bring it out to your table. My kids ordered the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. They're a decent size for little ones, topped with fresh strawberries (tip: if your kiddos aren't into strawberries, just ask to have them on the side like I did). You can also add extras like chocolate chips or blueberries for a small up-charge; both of mine loved theirs. I ordered Huevos Rancheros Brunch, which was good. Crispy tostadas loaded with tender shredded steak, beans, lettuce, and cream, and ask for a fried egg cooked medium so the yolk spills out perfectly. It came with pico de gallo and jalapeños on the side (I skipped those, but if you like a kick, i'm sure they will add great flavor). I tried their seasonal S'mores Latte; sweet, creamy, and topped with whipped cream and drizzle. Their dessert case is worth a peek; cakes, cheesecakes, pies, even vegan-friendly options. Didn't have any but next time. The staff were all so kind and welcoming, smiles all around.

The Fido's Fries were beer battered fries, topped with cheese, bacon (we got the pork option but they have soy), scallions, & sour cream (on the side). The fries were absolutely delicious! I loved my chili cheese dogs as well. It was a very generous portion because it was two dogs and a ton of frickles. As a dog lover, I adored all of the dog art & statues around the place. The menu is even dog themed. I mean they call appetizers kibbles & bits. That could not be any cuter! There is indoor seating (with a bar) and outdoor seating. As you can probably already tell, the restaurant is dog friendly (with their outdoor area). They even have a dog friendly menu (called puppy meals). Service was superb!
