The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable, and provided great service. Don't get me wrong, I love their food still, but yesterday I ordered 2 Butter Chickens to go and there was barely any chicken. The flavor is still there, but only a few pieces of chicken. This restaurant has an interesting location, embedded in a criminal justice building with a snazzy corner location. It was not busy on a Sunday and I'm guess it's geared towards people that work in the area on weekdays. Walking to the bathroom and bypassing the vacant security desk for the building was a strange experience. The menu is South Indian; there were some differences in what was online and what I found on the printed menu, but it was a wide and interesting selection with abundant options for special dietary needs. I ordered a dosa and an appetizer, which were splendidly presented on banana leaves. I asked for my Indo-Chinese paneer extra spicy, and they seemed a bit skeptical, but it did deliver a heck of a spice kick and an abundance of leafy tropical flavor (full curry leaves are common in this cuisine). The dosa was large, extra thin, quite salty, and satisfying. A chai was small and unsweetened. I didn't get quite the bustling atmosphere that their other location (in Cary) possessed and the menu for some reason did not have the kottu paratha I wanted to try, but I would definitely recommend anyone seeking some South Indian food to come here. read more

Left an earlier rave review. Grew up in India and was so pleased that Anjappar had spectacular dishes I had never tried, including a dosa made of millet? and a crab curry. All flavors on point. Visited again recently and the cocktail menu was sad, most wines unavailable and the available ones not so good. No more special dosa or crab curry. It was like an efficiency expert came in and said, "86 the dishes that don't sell, and get the cheapest wine list." Felt like the soul of the place had evaporated. I got my order delivered and had their Garlic Naan and Butter Chicken (Medium spice level). The food was still warm when it arrived and the butter chicken had been wrapped up in plastic wrap to prevent spills. The butter chicken had a great savory flavor and was slightly spicy. The next time I order, I'll try to get one dish "spicy" and one "medium" as I think I can tolerate a little more spice than the medium. The garlic naan was delicious both with and without the curry. This is my favorite Indian restaurant in all of Durham. It's not right in the middle of the downtown. If you walk a little down the road, then you find essentially a hidden gem. Out of all the Indian restaurants in Durham, I would say this one is the best one. I have any to emphasize this! I have been to a lot of Indian restaurants and the staff and food here is flavorful and mouthwatering. I sometimes think of this place and my mouth waters. I broke my foot a few months ago, and Anjappar was my go-to delivery spot for all of my recovery. I have enjoyed everything I tried, but the standout for me is the paneer tikka masala (and for my husband, it's the Gongora chicken). Once I recovered, going to the restaurant wasn't a hugely different experience, as it is a fairly typical Indian restaurant (but I could get a cocktail). It is in a weird government building that seems totally deserted, which is strange. To use the restroom, you have to go into the atrium of the building, and I felt like I was bothering the person trying to clean the floors. If you are looking for a good deal, they often send out discount codes by email. And if you use UberEats, they routinely have BOGO specials. Buying 2 restaurant meals equates to 4 at-home meals/leftovers, so it can be very affordable. I have 2 very small critiques: First, the menu is overwhelming. It is huge with so many different options that my first reaction is to order something basic. I continue my quest to try everything on the menu, but the staples are so good that I keep coming back. Second is you get the occasional star anise or bay leaf, which can be unpleasant to bite into, so look out for that. Overall, this is hands down my favorite Indian restaurant in Durham. I will continue to eat my way through the menu and tip my UberEats driver. read more

This has been our go to Indian restaurant since moving to Durham and it never disappoints! We always order it to go so I don't have great photos of take away containers but rest assured the food is phenomenal. We've tried the chicken kotthu paratha, butter chicken, chicken tikka, biryani, idly, mango lassi, naans and methi chicken ( my fave). Like this place is actually good that we keep coming back and we've only been here 2 months! The portion sizes are great, the spice levels are customizable and food is already in good time. Newish Indian cuisine in Downtown durham. The menu so many options but I wanted to try a standard like butter chicken and mango lassi. The butter chicken was flavorful. I got it mild but you can adjust the spice as you like. The mango lassi was nice and refreshing. Definitely more sweet and mango forward which I enjoyed. Always on the hunt for good biryani in RTP, we stopped by Anjappar--tucked in downtown Durham (parking's a bit of a game, but the manager was super helpful). The server was refreshingly honest: "Our biryani isn't Hyderabadi-style--you might not love it." Disappointed? A bit. Grateful for the honesty? Absolutely. Tried the street-style fried chicken noodles and a deconstructed veechu parotta with chicken curry (note: the egg mysteriously vanished from the parotta--but hey, still tasted great). Everything was hot, flavorful, and spiced just right. Paired perfectly with a sweet-salty lime soda. Fast, tasty, and satisfying in under 20 minutes. We'll definitely return--but next time, not for biryani, rather to explore their Chettinad/Kerala fare. Ambience is great, decent vibes. read more

We had dinner there tonight. The menu is expansive and equally delicious. We ordered the mixed veg Pokura as a starter. Super crispy and well seasoned with a pair of tasty sauce compliments. We ordered wine and Kingfishers, cold and tasty. For our entrees we ordered complimenting Malabar Korma's (chicken and lamb). Both dishes were tasty and just the right heat(mild) for my american palate. The only miss here was service which just seemed "confused". There was a "hostess" who just kept looking at a us side eyed waiting for someone to tell her what to do. There were two servers who were in a hurry to take your order and run around but not to return with your drink. There was no check to see how things were or anything. Overall, I would LOVE to eat this food again, maybe takeout. read more

Amazing dishes like tender mutton curry, new-to-us crab curry, yummy dosa, flaky paratha, and delicious sauces. Happy to see the bartender using Indian flavors in the cocktails, though they could be just a bit more balanced. Food and the waiter were both absolutely fantastic... only thing holding back from 5 stars is we arrived at 5pm when they open and tried to order cocktails- the waiter told us the bartender hadn't gotten in yet but should be here shortly, ok no problem. We ordered food-- it arrived and again can't recommend it enough- but no drinks. By 6pm, still no drinks. Waiter asked if we'd like beer or wine since bartender never showed up but meal was over by then. Today we're lucky to be part of grand opening of Anjapar Durham. We are from Charlotte and visited Durham for our other personal visit, the work was done around noon and I was hungry. Thought of visiting Anjapar in carry. Luckily found the grand opening sign on the way back . Just next a block to the government office. We're so pleased to be part of their grant opening festival . After the Nutcracker on Christmas Eve, thankfully Anjappar was open! The two of us are gluten and dairy free, so the website and menu looked promising. We were seated right away then took a while to look through the long menu. Our server Nic was patient and helped us narrow down which items we could eat. As appetizers we had the vegetable rasam and Gobi 65. We ordered their chicken curry special and chicken chettinad. Everything was excellent! The restaurant is in the same building as government offices--these bathrooms are shared. You could wear casual or more formal clothes, go on a date, take the family, or celebrate a birthday here. DONT order takeout on a sat night if youre looking to get your food within a reasonable timeframe. The restaurant is clearly understaffed for a sat night. It took more than an hour to complete my takeout order. The takeout website says it would take 15 mins, so I waited at the restaurant for an hour. Despite the food clearly not going to come out soon, nobody's willing to tell me how long my order really needs to take, and all I got was "it's gonna take 5-10 more minutes".
