Had a great meal on a Friday evening! We were able to get a reservation for 7 for a friend's birthday! We had veg samosas to start and I had Kadai Paneer for my entree. It was quiet, bright, and clean inside, and our server was quite softspoken and kind.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the mixed grill, plain naan, and my friend got the chicken biryani. The food came pretty quickly and I was served with a beautiful platter of chicken tikka, tandoori chicken and shrimp, and other meats that I'm not too sure of. It also came with a side of white rice. Everything was scrumptious! It was packed with flavor so you definitely need some naan or rice to go with bites. The naan was cooked nicely and had butter on it. It's a pre-set menu with fried vegetables (squash blossoms maybe) as an appetizer (these were delicious!), chicken tikka masala or shahi paneer (same spices, one just had chicken and the other didn't, both delicious, chicken came in big chunks), lamb bhuna or mixed vegetables (same spices, one was vegetarian, the vegetarian one was my favorite of all the dishes), a chickpea dish which had a great flavor and was a bit spicy (we ordered mild for everything), naan (fresh and soft), and a gulab jamun for dessert (like a donut hole soaked in syrup). Very good food - always fast and delicious. I've tried several different dishes and all were wonderful.

Ordered something online and wanted to change the time for pickup. Proceeded to call them to ask them to change the time of pickup, and they said they could not find my order. I then called them again two separate times to fully confirm that my order was not placed. I ended up just placing an order on the phone for the right time and picked it up. When I picked up my order, I asked them about my previous online order, and they still said that they couldn't find my order and told me that I must have made a mistake. I, in fact, did not make a mistake because they called me 2 hours later to tell me that my order needed to be picked up. So they essentially called me delusional 4 times and then got mad at me for not picking up an order they FULLY TOLD ME didn't exist. I asked for a refund because I swear these people recognized me enough to know I had inquired about this order before, and they told me that I would not be able to get a refund. Stopped here for a quick lunch because I was in the area for an appointment. I kept it simple and chose the $15 vegetarian lunch thali. I appreciate that the wait staff asked for my spice level when I gave my order. While I'm sure the list of items change, what I received was vegetable pakora for the appetizer, a small "salad" of onions, carrot and cilantro, chana masala, another vegetable dish, a bowl of rice, and 2 pieces of gulab jamun. Oh, and 2 pieces of naan, plus chutneys -- cilantro and tamarind. The food arrived at the table quickly and was piping hot! The taste of every single item was delicious and definitely fresh tasting. The only issue is that the service was not particularly friendly or engaging. I didn't expect for the server to have a conversation with me, but he gave off a vibe as if he wanted me to hurry up, eat and then leave. On the other hand, he wasn't abrupt, just...indifferent? How about just the perfect town with just the perfect strip of restaurants and people. Chimney is in the middle of it all with a great open corner space. The decor is superb, lounge area, bar, table seating and awsome lighting. I loved everything about inside. We were so hungry and Yelp show me all the restaurants nearby however by time I decide I wanted Indian food, it apparently was closed for two hours but the doors were still open so when we walked in unbeknownst, a smiling Parvin meet us saying they are closed but he will take us as his last lunch costumers. Our chicken tikka masala and garlic Nan bread with rice was the most delectable. Without looking on the menu we ordered. Parvin chat us up about Indian beer which we decided to get which was great. Atmosphere: Chimney is a clean, elegant restaurant located on Franklin Street. The restaurant is pretty spacious and has a welcoming bar when you first enter. The parking available in front of Chimney is also a big bonus compared to other restaurants on Franklin. Service: Our server was kind and prompt in taking our order. The food did take a bit longer than expected to come out however, with about a 20 minute gap in between our starter and the main entrees. Food: We started with the Basket of Naans. The plain and garlic naans made for a great starter/side during our meal. We also got the Tandoori Chicken, which was spicy and had a good amount of sauce on it. For our main dishes, we ordered the Chicken Biryani, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Chana Masala. The main courses initially appeared to be small in portion, but they were very filling. The Biryani was one of our favorites and was simple, spicy, and full of flavor. The sauces in the Tikka Masala and Chana Masala were also rich and complex, especially when absorbed by the leftover naan. Overall: Although a bit pricey, Chimney makes some great food. This is a great spot for a date night or an indulging dinner with friends. We would love to come back to try more of their dishes! read more

I am so glad this place opened up on Franklin St! Last week, I got the paneer butter masala delivered to my apartment, and I raved about it for so long that my roommates bought some, too. Now we're all hooked on Chimney's food! I split the malai kofta and the palak paneer with my mom for dinner last night. While I found the palak paneer to be a bit bland--perhaps I need to ask for a higher spice level!--the malai kofta was absolutely AMAZING. I love that they give free rice, and the naan is to die for. Chimney also has far more reasonable prices than the neighboring Cholanad, and Chimney's owners won't tow you for parking in their lot and stepping out to run another errand (unlike Cholanad). I am super interested in coming back here and sampling everything on their menu! I highly recommend this place as along with Vimala's it's one of the best Indian restaurants in Chapel Hill. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant for past 2 years and its disturbing when people write misinformation! Besides being the best Indian food in the area with very good service. From few months the property landlord authorized a private parking for all the business in that area. So if you coming to park and go somewhere else other than the business that are authorized to customers parking the property landlord is responsible for getting your car towed if you are not reading the signs. The other business owners and Chimney is not responsible for it to clarify! Its really selfish for people to put a blame on others for their own mistakes...read the signs before parking there! The business owners are not in charge or authorized to get you out of it if you don't have any proof to show the tow guy you were there and not just a walk off after parking. The towing company is watching you through their camera's. Chimney staff told us your car will not be towed if you are attending their restaurant or other connecting business assigned to that private parking for their customers only! read more

I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and I know how hard it is for restaurants to survive on Franklin Street so I thought I would spread the good news. The menu is divided very nicely into vegetarian and non-vegetarian options, with more than enough variety to satisfy any type of appetite. Prices are fair - 13 to 24 for dinner entrees (with majority of entrees being 13 -16). My friend and I ordered the malai kofta and the Palak Paneer and split a side of Garlic Chili naan. Portion sizes are very generous and the flavors are spot on. They both come with generous servings of rice. The Garlic Chili naan had quite a kick (beware, those with low spice tolerance) - but my friend and I loved it. Can't wait to come back! read more

We also got a side of garlic naan that was flaky and flavorful. The spice levels on the lamb and salmon were both medium (accurate to our order) but the medium heat request for the chicken tasted very mild. Service and are were very nice and clean. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Marsala medium spiced. I was offered mild, medium, and spicy. I was told the spicy would be an 8 out of 10, so I went with the medium and satisfied with the spicy flavor. Had a great meal at Chimney Friday night. It was our first time there, and we couldn't have had a better experience. We started off with their cosmo-like cocktail with exploding fragrances - a must have for the taste and experience. We did takeout from here, and all i can say is that it is excellent food - and I'm very picky about finding good Indian food. Lovely subtle additional flavors that come through, balanced with the flavors you expect for each dish. "Mild" still has a tiny kick which was nice. The samosas are the best I've had in the Raleigh Durham area, and I've eaten at most Indian places in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill / Carrboro areas. We also found the food not oily, and there were options for vegans which were very nice according to our vegan. So this review is for the bar. I only tried the appetizers so can't comment on the food completely. but guys!!! Let me tell you, what a hidden gem in the heart of chapel hill. We had wanted to try a bar next door but was disappointed in the cocktails and walked into this one solely because it wasn't crowded and looked like it was a hole in the wall with clean decor, and boy I'm so glad my brother dragged us in! Bartender made us fantastic cocktails, and definitely has experience in taking Drinks and giving it an Indian twist!
