I don't really know what to say.. it's prices are up there with some of the best steak houses. But the food isn't quite as good. Some of that extra cost is for the environment. *** UPDATE *** I wanted to update this review and change the rating for 1 star to 3. I was contacted by the owner of Pompey's after posting my review. He was very apologetic and said that this issue had not been handled well and he was very sorry for my poor experience, and that he is working with the staff to ensure this doesn't happen again in the future. I felt that he was very sincere. We worked this out, and he made it right from my standpoint. So I will be giving them another chance in the future and will hopefully be able to post a very positive review as the restaurant has tremendous potential. *** END UPDATE *** My in-laws treated my wife and I to dinner here for our anniversary. Things started out OK. We ordered a nice bottle of wine and were enjoying ourselves. Then a part of ~8 was seated next to us in the middle of the dining room. They were a bit loud, but it is a restaurant. So we order and are visiting, then I hear one of the individuals at the other table quite loudly blurt out the f-word. It caught all of our attention, but ok, so this person has a gutter mouth, we will ignore it and move on. A few minutes later, it happens again and the woman next to him says "indoor voice". So we figure that may help and continue. About now our meal shows up and we are enjoying it, and this crude individual says the f-word again, and not quietly. We just determine to ignore it and try to finish our meal, despite hearing him use the f-word loudly ~6 times. We are about 3/4 of the way through and then this rude individual proceeds to joke about how another gentleman at his table appears to be sitting on a sex toy (using much more crude language than I have). At this point, I was done. I told my in-laws & wife I was going to sit on the patio. I was no longer hungry and was quite disgusted. I get that it has become common-place to hear vulgar language like this, but I expect a higher level of decorum when I am spending $75-100/person on dinner. Pompey's website describes itself as having a "sophisticated setting", "A warm, elegant atmosphere", and "the perfect embellishments for a grand Montana dining experience". And they charge commensurately for that. What we received was great food, but a bar atmosphere. At this point, I was done and lost my appetite. We didn't order desert and we left. I sent my in-laws and wife to the car and spoke with the receptionist at the front desk. She acknowledged that the individual was intoxicated. It was his birthday and he had been drinking all day. She also said that she had spoken to him at the table twice during the meal due to complaints by other patrons. She took my business card and sent me an email saying that the manager or executive chef would be in touch the next day. I didn't receive any response for 5 days, so I emailed the front desk again and received an email from Brooke, the general manager. She said that she was just informed of the issues and suggested I "visit us again, perhaps on a weeknight when we are a bit slower" and added "I only wish we would have known about it earlier so we could have tried to accommodate you by moving tables". Based on the tone of the email, it appeared Brooke was under the issue was the noise level. Sure, I didn't care for the noise level, but I wouldn't complain about that. I responded and explained the extremely vulgar & offensive language that was used at the other table. Regarding the suggestion that we should have informed them sooner so they could move us, really?!? So it's my responsibility to inform your staff that this language is offensive? This is effectively saying they accept that kind of behavior in their restaurant. How this should have been handled is for them to ask this party to move downstairs to the bar, or ask them to leave after having been spoken too repeatedly. While I did get an apology, I was expecting at least a partial refund. I am very unhappy with our experience, and extremely frustrated with the back-handed apology and apparent lack of any kind of remorse, despite having multiple opportunities to do so. read more

Over priced sports bar. We were hoping for an elegant place to have dinner but it wasn't. We could hear people swear and they were loud. The dinner was ok. I was so looking forward to the dinner but wasn't impressed. Even with reservations we had to wait for a hostess that looked like she didn't want to be there. Our server was awesome though. Had a great celebration last night for hubby's birthday. They were very accommodating considering all the COVID 19 regulations and gave our party 2 tables in our own room which was nice because at times we had a screaming baby. Pompey's Grill, the main restaurant at the hotel, is simply amazing. The chef undertakes some wonderful flavor combinations that are utterly fabulous. We went to a wine paring last evening and had several courses, small plates, and I am still savoring how good they were. The chocolate torte is divine. We have taken in-town business guests here over the course of the past three years and have never been disappointed. read more

The Christmas buffet brunch is wonderful. The prime rib is tender and all the other dishes are fresh and tasty. The old Hotel is beautiful and the service is amazing. One recommendation I would suggest is serve more hot vegetables and mashed potatoes with gravy along with the breakfast potatoes. read more

Disappointing We went for the Sunday crab special to celebrate a friends birthday. While the food was pretty good, the service was sub par at best. Stacy our waitress seemed disappointed not all of us were ordering the all you could eat crab and couldn't resist making a comment. In addition her brief and I mean drive by checks of how our table was doing and if we needed anything additional was infrequent and unsincere. Our best service came from the young lady refilling the water glasses. I'm not sure if Stacy was distracted by a table of friends or something else; but she forgot requests which made me feel she really forgot our table or didn't care. I even ordered a drink and told her how I wanted it prepared; when it came she set it down quickly and left; so when she finally returned and I explained it wasn't how I ordered it; she didn't offer to bring me what I ordered her only solution was to take it off the bill so she could keep moving along. Pompey's Grill is not a bad restaurant and they do offer well prepared food, a good wine list and a quaint dinning room. What seems to be lacking is their standards for the servers to attend to the clients in a consistent manner with standards at a level congruent with the prices they charge and image they try to project. read more

Fantastic. Not cheap, but not over-the-top and worth every damn cent. The owners are local business magnates and grew up around the historic building. They invested a fortune and have made the town proud of its truly historic existence. Chef Matt's cuisine will thrill you, no matter what you order, and consider it all l since it's world-class food. Even the mundane sounding "mac-n-cheese" will blow you away (a favorite among everyone I know). Stay at the hotel, and you won't be disappointed; the rooms are historically smaller than modern rooms, but are like new and the whole place feels like you're living in style for the era. read more

My boyfriend and I took my mom and step dad here for dinner as we have eaten in the bar part many times and the food is very good. We found the dining room menu to be very limiting and quite expensive for what you receive. I ordered the bison short ribs they were very small and there were only two of them. However, I will say they were very good. My step dad ordered the pad thai which was very small and for the price was not worth it. My mom ordered a seafood special that seemed ok and my boyfriend ordered the pork chop which he really enjoyed. Overall, I think the bar menu has more options and more affordable menu items. You cannot order from the bar menu in the dining room. If you sit in the room with the bar next to the dining room you can order from both the dining room menu and the bar menu that way it gives you more options. When I made my reservation I requested a booth in the bar area because I knew we could order from both menus but when we talked to the hostess upon checking in she sat us in the dining room and did not seem to understand I specifically requested the booth when making my reservation two weeks prior. The food is delicious. My only recommendation if you are really hungry eat from the bar menu. Overall, a great place to dine year round. One of our favorites! read more
