Stepping into Shepherdstown for the farmers market, I expected a charming morning. What I didn't…read moreexpect was discovering Mountaineer Popcorn, a local treasure that instantly earned a spot among the region's must‑visit stops.Coworkers had told me their popcorn was "amazing," but that turned out to be a dramatic understatement. Sampling it for the first time, I ordered a small caramel and a small kettle corn--an error in judgment I regret only because I should have gone straight for the large. Each bite delivered that perfect balance of crunch, sweetness, and freshness that only true popcorn artisans achieve. As someone who is admittedly picky (I'm a devoted Whirley Pop user at home), I was genuinely impressed.Beyond the exceptional popcorn, the experience revealed something even more remarkable: the integrity of the staff. After making my purchase, I unknowingly left my wallet on the counter and drove off. They found my business card, called me immediately, and kept it safe until I returned. When I tried to offer a small reward for their honesty, they declined with sincere humility. That kind of character is rare--and it speaks volumes about the heart of this small-town gem. Mountaineer Popcorn is more than a snack stop; it's a reminder that great food and good people often go hand in hand. A delightful find in a lovely town, and absolutely worth a return visit.

This spot makes an outrageous jalapeno/white cheddar popcorn. All of their cheddar cheese offerings--cheddar, white cheddar, or in combination with buffalo spice, caramel, loaded potato--render me delirious. I also find that dill pickle and theater butter are winning choices. The corn kernel selected for popping is locally sourced from West Virgina, non-GMO and produces a flowery, large puff. It's a thing of beauty. I do know a thing or two about popcorn. My grandpa George was a corn farmer for nearly 50 years. I'd give Mountaineer 5 stars however recently tried to ship some bundles as gifts and encountered problems with the website when ordering. I left a voicemail message requesting a phone call for assistance. That didn't occur.

First we noticed they were understaffed and the person helping us was untrained in how to handle returns. The manager took over and I almost wish we had stayed with the trainee who was polite, even if he didn't have a clue how to process registry returns. The manager spent more time lecturing me about frivolous things (like why the return goes to the original purchaser and then an email is sent with store credit to us and why they don't price match online sellers) than actually helping process the return. In the end, they don't give you immediate store credit to use right then and there. So I pointed out that their advertisement about why you should choose WS for your wedding registry prominently displayed in the store is false advertising. It says "in-store experience" is among the "top reasons to register with us." I pointed out that this was false and the manager became indignant and further lectured me. I have a store credit which we may sell online rather than give any more of our money to WS. If not, we will go to another location to use our credit.
