I've stopped in at Free Range Cafe regularly since it opened, and I've really appreciated having a spot like this in the area. It can be difficult to find gluten free options and they always deliver good food. However, there definitely seem to have been some changes recently--not sure if it's new management, perhaps multiple factors. I'm excited to see some new additions to the menu, and any period of change is bound to come with some hiccups, but the use of generative AI is a HUGE concern for me. The environmental impact of generative AI is well-known, and that seems to be at odds with the values of Free Range which emphasizes local, fresh food and being more environmentally friendly. However, on my most recent visit, AI-generated merch was available for sale, as well as AI-generated coloring pages for kids. Some of the text on recent social media posts also has hallmarks of AI generation. There are many free coloring pages available online, and it could be really cool to see a collaboration with a local artist for merch designs instead. Free Range Cafe is a place I've always really enjoyed, and their food is still delicious. I want to continue coming here, so I hope that management can take these concerns into consideration as they move in their new direction. read more

Representing 2023, F is for Free Range Cafe. I was here in Hagerstown for work travel in May 2023. It was bittersweet as they had switched to online so it would be the last time having work travel there. Even if I'd be Hagerstown for some reason, I'd either be on the freeway or downtown area at best. This is on the north side of town, so unsure when or if I'd ever be back. On my way to my work travel, the rail was coming which might mean I'd be waiting 10 minutes, so I decided to pop in here for lunch. Staff was very nice. I asked several questions about the menu, and they were helpful. I got a grain chicken bowl with rice, Brussel sprouts, sweet potatoes, & more. It was excellent. The place was clean with plenty of room to seat and enjoy my nice meal. They had a beautiful water jug, which I enjoyed water in my courtesy water cup. Overall, it was an excellent experience with the outstanding bowl. I'd come back if ever back over here. read more

I think I just found my new favorite spot in the area. The moment I walked in I felt the warm and bright atmosphere of the place, everything looked clean modern and very thoughtfully designed. It has that calming vibe that makes you want to sit down with a good coffee and stay longer than you planned. The staff was welcoming and quick which immediately leaves a good impression. My coffee was smooth and perfectly balanced and the whole experience felt very consistent from service to ambiance. I also loved the seasonal touches in the decoration, it adds character and makes the place feel alive. What impressed me most was how peaceful and comfortable it is compared to many other cafes around. The menu features healthy bowls, smoothies, and oats. Also a variety of drinks- hot or cold. This is a very good natural whole food restaurant. That is to say, the ingredients are fresh, the menus eclectic, not traditional. It makes for a healthy, nutritious, alternative to diner food. I really liked The Orchard, All natural curry chicken salad- with grapes, ginger, turmeric and curry with kale and/or chopped romaine. Served with an orange balsamic dressing and walnuts (Not what "massaged kale" is... but that is how they described it...lol). It was nicely seasoned, not heavily curried. I really liked it. This review is from a few weeks ago but better late than never. Free Range is usually on point with their smoothies and bowls. Highly disappointed when I ordered broccoli and cheddar soup to go. Had a migraine so luckily on this day decided to eat a little before I got home...:in the parking lot. Glad I did. First thing I immediately noticed was the bowl size. I had just ordered the soup a few days prior for the first time and was told there was only one size so not sure why this container was no where near the size of the first. Took the lid off and noticed the soup was topped with cheese . This was also different than the first time ordering. So not only was it topped with cheese but the cheese took up almost 3/4 of the container. 1/3 soup and the rest topped with cheese:. Immediately Went back inside and asked about the size of the container and the soup portion itself. I was told they ran out and could not offer add more soup . So instead of just saying they didn't have enough for a full portion, the person fulfilling the order decided to be deceptive and use a smaller container and make it appear fuller by using 3/4 of cheese. This really put a bad taste in my mouth on the cafe. Now I'll just drive a few miles out of the way and visit the other smoothie cafe n town out near HCC. Oh yeah they refunded me half of the purchase price. Though the correct course of action should have been to advise there wasn't an entire serving size remaining and ask from the beginning if I'd like the remaking portion at a discounted price. Where to start my shitty experience. First my order was forgotten about. Then when I got the shit overpriced pretentious burrito it proceeded to leak all over my shirt and pants. Four bites into it, my shirt and pants were covered in burrito jizz and l'd had enough, the meal went in the trash. I tried to get a refill of overpriced tea only to find out no refills. How expensive is it to refill tea? Fantastic, if you are a pretentious hipster who likes an overpriced terrible food. $18 for a disaster burrito combo which included a non refillable tea and chips that are like eating glass shards. read more

Delicious, healthy food - Free Range is our absolute favorite place for a good breakfast or lunch. The BYO toast has become a new favorite - sweet or savory, there are so many combinations to choose from! The coffee is so good, but then it's River Bottom Roasters coffee, so why wouldn't it be? Service is always outstanding - even when they are busy, you just know they are aware of you and working to give you and all their customers the best service possible. As for ambiance? Free Range has a neat, clean and cheerful dining area - not to mention the patio area - so it is just an all-round enjoyable dining experience. read more

Excellent place. The vegetarian options were vast. The customer service from top to bottom was phenomenal. From the time you order to the time you receive your food, you know you're in good hands. Their salads are delicious. No matter which one you pick, you can't go wrong. There mock chicken or whatever they call it is a great meat substitute. Spent 5 days in Maryland/Virginia but didn't find this until the last day...bittersweet. BLUF--we LOVED it. Cold pressed juice, smoothies, and wraps were all AMAZING. Checked out this cute cafe in Hagerstown for the first time! My friend and I split both the Nutella, strawberry and banana bagel and the egg & sausage breakfast sandwich. The sweet sandwich was pretty basic but definitely will satisfy your sweet tooth and the savory option had a very flavorful bagel which I liked. I got an iced latte and my friend got a PB&J smoothie. They have lots of indoor and outdoor seating so that you can definitely find a place to sit and work if looking for a nice WFH spot. My girlfriend and I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately today we had a really strange experience. We ordered our food through their website around 10:30AM with a projected pickup time of 10:50AM. We arrive right on time and our order is no where to be seen. We figured it was still being worked on, so we went to the front counter to order some coffee and to kill some time. Unfortunately for us, we hovered around for probably about 5 minutes for no one to ever greet us or take our order. That was disappointing. We decided no coffee for us today, so we walked back to the pickup area, and our food is still nowhere to be found. After about 15 minutes, we asked one the workers for an update on our order, and then they realized they never made it in the first place. They started working on it right then and there. We understand things like this can happen in a busy restaurant, but it rubbed us the wrong way how nobody bothered acknowledging us. We felt like ghosts in this place! Eventually we received our food, and frankly it was just okay. The outer shell of my breakfast burrito was warm, but the insides were still cold and my girlfriend's açaí bowl was partially frozen and had chunks of ice throughout. I wish the best for this place because Hagerstown needs it, but I think it'll be awhile until we give this place another go. read more

My goodness for a 94.00 bill you would have thought the food would have tasted better. We go there often and have always thought it was good. I got the PBJ smoothie which was good (the PB is on the side of the cup, rather than incorporated into the smoothie... so it is not as noticeable). This small business sources organic, local, and free range (get it?) when possible, making breakfast or lunch here both a nourishing and good-for-the-environment meal you can feel good about. The prices are comparable to fast casual spots in the DC metro area, but the portions are larger and dare I say the quality is better than most of those? So far I've tried the Harvest salad, Korean BBQ rice bowl, Free Range breakfast wrap (eggs, potatoes, onion, chicken sausage, and special sauce), and the kids super smoothie (the dragon fruit smoothie but kids size). Truly enjoyed them all; avocado toast on sourdough is up next for me :) To top it all off the staff is so happy to answer questions and make my meal with a smile. A little disappointed - I previously wrote a glowing 5 star review but now they decided to start charging $3 extra if you modify a bowl. I'm allergic to banana and all of their bowls have banana in them, so I have to pay $3 extra for leaving out something I can't eat? That makes absolutely no sense and I've never seen it done anywhere else. The cashier told me it's because they were "losing money" but if they make the smoothie to order how is that losing money? You're actually saving money by me paying the same price and leaving an ingredient out. That's super not fair to people with allergies. Because of this it was pretty expensive for a bowl and an avocado toast when it could have been reasonable. I paid the extra this time but it will be my last. I will not be buying a smoothie or bowl here again since I have an allergy and that means I have to pay more than someone who isn't allergic. Pretty unfair of a place to do that. I am in love after only one visit. My boyfriend and I kept passing by and thought the hours were really weird for a sit down restaurant but it wasn't what we expected at all. We came from the gym and didn't really want to go inside but I was starving and didn't have the will power to cook dinner. To our luck, we discovered the drive through option as soon as we pulled in. I asked for the lemon pepper shrimp caprese salad and opted for the orange balsamic dressing. The worker at the drive through validated my choice by saying it sounded great for that salad. Bonus points! And it actually was super delicious! My boyfriend got the ranchero salad and was shocked at how much food there was. It was also delicious. Our FAVORITE part of the meal was the salted Carmel granola thing that they had on seasonal special. We only got one and we wished we hadn't. We fought over it!
