My wife and I went to Pope recently to apply for a rental. They put our name on a waiting list for a particular property we were interested in (because there's far more people looking to rent on the Central Coast than there are properties available), and they required a $20 application fee. We gave them a check, and filled out the rental application. We didn't hear anything from anyone. In the interim, we found another property through a different property management company and we were accepted. We went back to Pope to cancel our application and get our check back 7 DAYS after we had left it with them. We showed up in the office and there were several applications lying on the desk, and ours was still in the mix, not even processed. Again, this was one week later after submitting it, and no one had contacted us, and the app had not been processed. We're actually glad they didn't process the app or cash the check, so that our credit was not affected by the inquiry. Our disappointment was due to their lack of communication and not processing our information in a timely manner. Every property we looked at in the Five Cities area we found ourselves going up against a number of other prospective tenants. We have been up against the clock because the house we had been renting was put up for sale almost two months prior. There didn't seem to be a sense of urgency with this company and a couple of others. One might think that these property management companies are running a business to collect exaggerated processing fees. It seemed funny to me that the company we finally went through charged us less than any other company in the area. Me having a real estate license in California - I understand what customer service is about...most of my experiences with property management companies and real estate agents in this area leaves me scratching my head. FYI, I am a recipient of the Centurion Award through Century 21, which is reserved for the top 2% of Century 21 agents worldwide. I only mention this because I have a thorough understanding of real estate, customer service, and the urgency in which to process a transaction. I am very shocked at the lack of professionalism on the part of this company and others in the area. I was tempted to give them 3 stars only because we were able to get our check back and save our credit from another inquiry, but the fact that they gave us little to no attention is very disturbing. read more

This is my second positive review with Pope management. I honestly don't understand the negative feedback. These guys, more often than not, go above and beyond to make tenants happy. Service requests are immediately or very quickly responded to with professional vendors. Over Thanksgiving our slider leaked and we came home to no heat. They offered space heaters until it could be fixed and the leak was addressed right away. Space heaters? Who does that? Pope, that's who! They care enough to make sure you have something until the real thing is fixed, and our daughter had an ER visit for high fever to boot. My point is that not all rental companies do this. They could have apologized and suggested wearing layers and using blankets like most agencies would. But they didnt. They are truly the best of the best and the reason why we stay with them! They were proactive when they learned the first property I rented was being sold, and helped me find a new place to live. We found a rental through Pope, submitted an application, and were accepted. Before submitting our rental agreement, we went to look at the place one more time. Upon asking if Pope Management would ask the Landlord to consider painting the interior with a fresh coat of paint, we were blamed as people who clearly "didn't like the place", would "call them every time something broke with this house". I was told more than once by Pope management that "clearly your husband doesn't like the place" citing evidence that we took 40 minutes to look at the place instead of the usual 8 minutes by potential renters. I have previously rented four different places. This has been by far the worst experience to date. read more

I've rented from Pope a few times. They are good people. I never had any problems. At one place we rented, the owner wanted to move back in after we lived there for only 10 months. The Pope manager, Aaron Bournonville, was great during this difficult time and went above and beyond to help us transition. It was easy to tell he felt horrible. He is a great guy, very trustworthy. Pope Management has managed our rental property for a few years without any problems. Fred and his office staff are very helpful and responsive. We've never had to wait more then a couple hours for an answer or call back when he's not available. He's always honest and up front in our conversations. Also because of his skills we've had very little down time or empty time which is a huge plus when you're running on a tight budget. read more

I really had high hopes for this company since my parents used to rent from them and they always had a pleasant experience with them. But now as a renter living independently of my parents they treat me WAY differently. They pushed me around and weren't very cooperative with me. We lived in one of their apartments and it was HORRIBLE! Termites everywhere! They crawled in through the windows into our beds, in our kitchen..it was gross!!! I had a new born baby and I definitely didn't want to live in that type of environment. I talked to the neighbors and they said that they've been asking them to fix it and they never would. My neighbors below me were awful too. They let some old lady and her druggie daughter and grand daughter move in there and they were loud all the time. Yelling and screaming every night. When I called to complain they did nothing about it, all they cared about was if they were getting a check from them it seemed like. So many other problems that I could put up here too, but I think I've said enough. I now rent through Real Property Management and it's a breath of fresh air to be working with them! I now know to be picky when it comes to choosing a property management place to rent through. read more
