New kid on the block. Well, at least in these parts. Bojangles was a staple of my childhood. Fried chicken nights were few and far between but always welcomed. Occurred maybe twice a year. But it was always Bojangles. KFC was out of the question. Popeye's entered fried chicken row on 5th Street Highway a few years back. When it first opened, the lines were wrapped around the corner. In these parts, that sort of fanfare is usually reserved for the grand opening of a Cabela's or a gun store or something. So I waited for the hype to die down before I finally ventured over there. Actually, I waited a bit longer than that. It wasn't until I started seeing sweet deals on the website that I placed my first order. $19.99 for 14 tenders, two large sides, and five biscuits. You might be thinking, "Well wait a minute, I'm paying more than $1 per tender." You'd be right. But a 12-piece tender usually goes for $28. So yeah, this is a pretty steep discount. I got this particular deal on two occasions. Will you feel fat and disgusting the next day? No. You will feel fat and disgusting that night. But that's neither here nor there. You want good fried chicken, you know the consequences. The chicken itself is SO F'ING GOOD. It comes down to the breading. The seasoning in the breading is lightly salty with mild hints of smoked paprika and a peppery undertone. A peppery undertone? What am I even talking about? That's not a thing. Just eat the damn stuff. To be honest, the batter they use is the key here. The fried crispy breading has better texture than Bojangles and KFC. It's so fluffy. It's almost as if you coated a piece of moist, tender chicken with fried pork belly crisps. Is that what the people eat in the south? Those pork crisps? Just Googled it. Pork Rinds. How many of you at home buzzed in before I revealed the answer? Good on you. Here's why Popeye's doesn't get a perfect score. No one is still reading this, by the way. But if you are, don't order the Cajun Rice. I thought it was going to be similar to the Dirty Rice from Bojangles and pretty much every other respectable joint that sells rice. But no, Popeye's Cajun Rice tastes like pure armpits. It's the worst thing I've ever tasted from a fast food fried chicken joint. Where Popeye's makes of for their shortcomings is their sauces. Now holy cow. This sauce selection puts Chick-Fil-A to shame. And I know they are allies in the great chicken war, but Popeye's stands alone when it comes to sauces. First of all, Popeye's has 10 sauces. Their best are Mardi Gras Mustard, Blackened Ranch, Wild Honey Mustard, Bayou Buffalo, and of course their signature Voodoo Sauce. Those family meals come with 3-4 tiny ramekins of sauce. Any additional sauces cost like $0.75 each. My advice is to always have a bottle of ranch or buffalo on hand so you have ample dipping sauce at your disposal. Now, does Popeye's have the best fast food spicy chicken sandwich on the market? Still debatable. The Wendy's offering is still formidable. But if you want straight up fried chicken or chicken tenders, Popeye's is unrivaled. read more

My eldest daughter lives within walking distance of this one. The franchise owner should been more involved and take more pride in what the deliver to their customers. Brand new Popeyes, only a few months old. Finally nice to have a Popeyes in the area, although there are other fried chicken places within walking distance, including KFC and Bonjangles. Miss this place from when we used to go back in San Diego. Love the food here, plenty of different fast food chicken choices, including sides, combo meals and family packs. Located adjacent to a small strip mall with its own parking lot. Plenty of parking in and around the restaurant. Minus a star because the tables and floor were kinda messy. it was around lunch time and there was decent turnover, maybe they just havent worked out the staffing kinks yet. This is the only Popeyes I've ever visited. Since this is Reading, PA, and I wasn't walking into Chick-fil-A, I pretty much knew what to expect from the employees. Management might want to schedule some training for the employees to learn to enunciate. Nothing terrible, nothing great. Not sure why everyone went ballistic over the chicken sandwiches. Sure, they're good, just as Chick-fil-A and Wendy's spicy are good. They are just different. Better? Nope. Worse? Nope. Just different. I read in the news that people were fighting over them. Perhaps, if you fight someone over a piece of fast food, it's not because the food is outstanding, but rather that you're just an idiot. I think the individual chicken pieces are of a better quality than KFC though. This location has one of those Coke Free Style machines. That's always a plus. All in all, this place is fine and I'd go back. Be sure to look at your receipt for a survey. This is very late in writing this, but I am finding time now to do so. I went there back when it just opened. (Have not returned). Granted I know it was new so the lines were crazy long. Now, my thoughts on the food are... well the portions were small. (Compared to KFC) and the taste was really nothing to rave about. The big hitter for me to never go back falls on seeing a customer leave with food and return because something was wrong with the order. The manager proceeded to take the chicken from the customer and place it back in the bins to be handed out to other customers. I'm pretty sure the rule is if food leaves you can not take it back in. The manager has no way of knowing if the customer did something to it. (Poison) I know it's bad to think this way but it's a crazy world. This location just opened, and like any new spot they are currently getting slammed with customers. Ate here at around 6PM on September 5, 2018. Drive-thru line was long. Wait time inside wasn't bad at all. Interior layout feels a bit small, and is definitely not designed for the current crowds they're getting. Restaurant looked clean and well maintained. Staff is large and just finding their feet and they all seem pretty overwhelmed, but all were friendly and polite. My wife and I each ordered a meal (2-piece chicken, 5-piece tenders), and they forgot an extra biscuit we ordered as well as my dipping sauces. No big deal, but I imagine they are making many small mistakes like that as they get into a rhythm while dealing with large lines of customers. Lots of shouts for "Manager!" while we were there. They have a single Coke Freestyle machine for beverages, and it was already on the fritz. The machine was out of ice, and someone (manager?) had decided to put out two large plastic containers of ice with scoops for customers to self-serve. Not sure that was the most sanitary of solutions. Soda was pretty flat, as well. As far as the chicken: it's good. Blackened ranch dipping sauce is awesome. Sides (red beans and rice, mac and cheese, dirty rice) are just OK. Biscuits are decent. Put it this way: If you like KFC, this will be a huge step up for you. If you're a Bojangles devotee like me, there's nothing here that competes. You'll also get a way larger portion of food for comparable prices at Bojangles. read more

Finally Popeyes opened a restaurant in Reading! The spicy chicken tastes good as usual. I tend to dip mine into their BBQ sauce. I just found out today that you can request specific parts of the chicken for the combos. I asked for two legs and a thigh, but received 2 legs and a breast it seems. Their mash potatoes and gravy tastes OK. I've tried their corn on the cob before and really enjoyed that. The biscuit tasted OK too. read more

Literally the worst Popeyes I've ever been to. I came around when it finally died down. No long lines. The employees are younger and extremely rude and ignorant. The place is disgusting. Floors are dirty, tables are a mess, bathrooms are vile. The food was cold and tasted old. A friend of mine said she found WORMS IN HER CHICKEN. HORRIBLE service. Placed an online order for pick up. Paid extra money for an all white meat meal. Sent my son to pick it up. First, there was no record of the pre paid order when he arrived even though he had a confirmation email. He gets home and there were no two piece white meat meals. There were chicken sandwiches. I just paid nearly twenty dollars for chicken sandwiches. I tried to call the establishment to report this and something is wrong with the phone and you can't even call in. So now, my only course of action is drive from Mohrsville all the way back to Temple because THEY totally screwed up my order. NEVER AGAIN. SO angry. There service is really bad. Not the first time I pick up food here and there is always something missing from my order. My family has had the same issue. There is nothing wrong with young folks working at this place but it seems that management has to step it up. Just this week I stopped by for food and let me not forget to mention how Surprised I was that everyone was wearing a mask. Any way I went thru the drive thru and placed my order when I received my order I specifically asked the girl at the window if she can give me certain condiments. She said there in the bag. I asked her again and she reiterated that they were in the bag. I get to my destination to drop off the food to the employees and there were no condiments not even napkins. I was really bothered at the fact that I asked her not once but twice and she said they were in the bag. I went back and asked to speak to the manager politely. As I am standing there I see the employee who seems higher up then the cashier ignore me. She then had no choice to ask me again what it was I wanted because she saw I was not going to leave. She calls for the manager and a few seconds later I here her say out loud "anger management" as the manger is coming by to meet me. I respectfully explained to the manager the situation and explained that it is not the first time that they get there orders wrong or that his employees disregard customers request. I clearly explained that I was not asking for him to compensate me but that he should be aware if he doesn't knows and cares about the business that he is running because if I was short on cash for my order I would not get my what I have ordered and that he should provide a full service to his customers. Our food was great, the place was clean, the bathroom was clean, and the employees were super friendly and we had great conversation while we waited for our food to come out. As soon as i saw the construction for this location i was excited because i am a college student from new york i am used to a plethora of options as compared to a middle of no where town with boring fast food. When it first opened i didn't even play myself to wait in the drive thru line that reach the exit of the strip mall i cant believe how lazy people here are to really sit in a car behind twenty others! The cashier took our order but she was so busy being a goof and getting sidetracked that she put in the wrong items on my receipt but charged me for what I correctly ordered. Thank goodness her employee friend was there being a nosey busybody( i think she just wanted to be in my bf's face) and had to scratch out the receipt so the people making it wouldn't mess up. So im waiting and when they call my number they tell me that since i ordered blackened tenders they could only make some because its not something people buy...what!?!? Immediately i am pissed because they gave me two reg tenders and some measly blackened. I tried to argue and ask what sense does that make never have i been told just because its not ordered a-lot they cant make it ,then why advertise it on the menu?! I just took my food and left and once me and my bf got in the car he ordered the same thing as me and guess what. They gave him a bunch of blackened tenders! I almost went back to really cause a scene but my lovely bf took my two reg tenders i didn't want and gave me some of his. To think I used to get on the turnpike just to get my Popeye's chicken fix. Well I was excited to find a Popeye's in the area. We wanted to try the chicken sandwich that's been in the news and I offered to pick up the order for our family. The girl at the counter got my order wrong 6 ways to Sunday. I had to repeat everything and some other people went over to help her. They were rude-so rude! I asked for the pickles on the side. The cook agreed to do it but the unfriendly guy that was supposed to be helping said, "No we don't do that. We don't have packaging for that." I guess the customer isn't always right and he will be working at Popeye's until he learns that all important rule of customer service. So you can guess they got my order wrong. They charged me for some stuff I didn't order. Yeah, I did ask what are the fries like but I didn't say I wanted to buy them. After the "Who's On First" ordering fiasco, the girl sets a tray in front of me with enough food to feed 4 people (which it was). I asked if this is how they serve the takeout. "Oh you wanted it to go?". C'mon, that's the first things I said to her- it's to go. The guy took the food and literally threw it into boxes and bags. I really didn't want him to touch it anymore with that attitude. I can understand if they're frustrated because of the incompetent girl but don't take it out on the customer or the food! The sales associates were so horrible, they will not get our repeat business for that reason alone. When I got home with the food, the family told me to never go back. They don't have to tell me twice! That chicken sandwich is twice as big as the competition's but it just tastes like grease. Oh and the pickles were on there too. The biscuits tasted like they'd been basted with rancid butter. It's a shame because you could tell the biscuit itself was pretty good. Went through the drive through around 10 PM tonight and I ordered chicken tenders with red beans and rice, Cajun shrimp and fish with coleslaw and an additional side of Cajun fries and Cajun rice. When i got to the next window after already paying the workers tell me they're out of popcorn chicken but they have butterfly, I said that was fine I'll take that instead. When i got home I noticed I was missing the red beans and rice and my Cajun rice and since I bought extra sides that's basically $5 just wasted. I was upset but was not going to drive 20 minutes back there. Stopped at Popeyes for lunch after several weeks of waiting for long lines inside and at the drive thru to diminish. Shouldn't have wasted our time or money. Didn't have to wait long to get waited on, though the start and end points to the line were confusing. Too many people standing around waiting for their orders while others were squeezing in trying to order. Definitely not enough room there. As the girl behind the counter was trying to wait on us, a coworker pushed her aside to get to the register. She said something like "Seriously???" and he responded "I gotta clock out." So... SERIOUSLY??? Soda machine - still only one - still doesn't work properly. Ice lever kept getting jammed, so they still have ice buckets out. I pushed the buttons for the kind of drinks I wanted, got the wrong ones both times. Too many people in line to bother complaining. While the food wasn't bad, the portions are small and over-priced. Bojangles gives you more for less, with better quality. They also give you a plate and actual forks & knives. Popeyes squeezed our eat-in order into a takeout box. I don't want to have to dig through a top layer of fries to get to what's underneath. Could have done without the typical conversation, horseplay and stupidity between teen employees at the tables - this was not the time or place - and the manager just seemed to overlook it. NOT professional. First impressions are lasting impressions. We won't be back. We'll stick with Bojangle's. read more
